This way you will have the money raised before the event and those who contribute can feel assured that they'll get their money back if the event doesn't take place.

This sounds like an awesome idea, however you might also gave to consider the people in my kind of situation, where I am broke as all hell until Thursday. Im donating at the event.

I think the issue with covers are the agreement with gom , and even if not it's that you don't want to turn anyone away right?
but he can't be left to hang out to dry money wise.

I'm not sure about anyone else, but I'm down for this. If the money seems insufficient, then you can refund the money.
EDIT: In fact, you should probably open it anyway regardless if it happens or not. The community really does owe you and I'm sure they are willing to give back.

Wait, how did you lose $800 with about 80 people there? You only got $400 in donations out of 80 people? A lot of cheap TLers in Toronto if the average donation was $5. That's less than a movie ticket for a heck of a lot more entertainment.
