Thank you everyone for coming to the tournament. It was a bit unorganized since we had 20 more people than expected on the brackets and had to finish at around the same time. Still couldn't have done it without everyone's cooperation though. We will probably keep these tournaments separate from the LAN parties since a lot more people show up for the competition. Any comments or suggestions for future tournaments are appreciated. (We might start having a very small buy-in and a sign up deadline next time.)
Each player is responsible for their own time/account at the netcafe ($4/hour or $3/hour with membership). If you run out of time in the middle of a game, it is an automatic loss.
Players must include their Battle.net ID's on their name tag. This helps us find people faster and keep everyone organized. If you don't play in the tournament, you don't need to do this.
People who want to participate in the tournament need to sign up with me (btway) or Certified on-site. Ask around if you can't find us.
Tournament sign-ups will end at 1:45PM. The tournament will start at 2:00PM.
The tournament will be single elimination.
Games before the semi-finals will be BO1 and played on Steppes of War unless the players can agree on another map.
Semi-finals are BO3, starting on Xel'Naga Caverns (unless another map can be agreed on), with the loser picking the next map.
Finals will be BO3 on Metalopolis (unless another map can be agreed on), with the loser picking the next map.
Map options are limited to Scrap Station, Metalopolis, Blistering Sands, Xel'Naga Caverns, Steppes of War, and Lost Temple.
If the players allow, up to 3 extra people may spectate the BO1 games, but the BO3 matches will be broadcasted ONLY on the TV screens.
Super Bad Manners (SBM) will not be tolerated.
There are a lot of new breakable doodads at the netcafe. You break it, you buy it.
And since there was some confusion about who should be attending this tournament, cue Chill:
I am really young / don't want to drive / am underage / don't want to party. Should I come? Yes. I am bad at StarCraft. Should I come? Yes. I don't know many people from the TL community / am really shy. Should I come? Yes. Can I bring a friend? Yes.
I have a really cute asian girlfriend / sister / friend. Should I bring her? Yes. I am free to come, but for the above reasons I will pretend to be busy. Will I be banned from TeamLiquid? Yes.
Hello again, awesome TLers.
Who is going?
That's a silly question. You don't even know what's happening yet. I'll keep the guest list here though.
A Starcraft 2 Tournament! Need motivation to brush up on your skills during the school year? Come kick some butt and show everyone who's boss (hint: you).
Sounds good. When can I start?
On Saturday, September 18th at exactly 1PM EST, sign ups for the tournament begin. Sign ups close at 1:45PM and the tournament will start at exactly 2. Where should I be at exactly 1PM?
For the people who attended NYC LAN 7, it is at the same netcafe. Cybercraft will be advertising this tournament for us, so expect some good competition from people outside of Teamliquid.net as well.
Cybercraft is located at: 141-20 Northern Blvd. Flushing, NY, 11354
Why should I come?
Because you are super cool. Also, depending on the number of attendees, there may or may not be a small cash prize. We'll see TL;DR: SC2 Tournament on Saturday, September 18th at 1PM. Netcafe is at 141-20 Northern Blvd in Flushing, Queens.+ Show Spoiler +

Seems like Friday's a bad day for some people. As of right now, the day has been temporarily moved to Saturday, September 18th. Hopefully that will be better
nope they said mid September. So i'm gonna assume sept 10-20. Now if it doesn't come out by then i will join the hundreds of trolls on the general forums raging at blizzard for lieing to us.

If it patches on the day of the tournament, I will personally sit around at their computers with a trollface mask on all day.

Yeah, it's not really a LAN. I wish it was
more so because of the lag issues we had last time.
We asked them to try and schedule their computer updates for a day when we're not there. They were updating a bunch of new games on the other computers last time, which is why it was lagging.

that explains alot actually. I do believe LoL and HoN are downloaded on a P2P system. So it would eat the bandwidth if you were dling it on 4 comps at the same time.

Hopefully those two games don't release a patch on the same day as SC2 D:<

What is this. I was under the impression that it will be a 4v4 tourney
complete tourney rules will be posted shortly, for anyone who's been to the lan events the rules will be pretty much the same
biggest change is that we are no longer pooling for the comps, everyone is responsible for their own computer time, however the 8 stations is still reserved in case other guests are using the comps
also there will be a lunch break period rather than food being delivered being that this event will mainly revolve around the tourney
setup will remain the same and ppl will still be expected to wear name tags(which we provide) with their Bnet IDs

If you're a NYC newbie I do not recommend driving over to the net cafe.
hopstop.com use this for directions via public transportation to get there.
Best option if you are coming from the city is taking 7 train to Main Street, Flushing(last stop) and stay on the first car and soon as you walk out, take the left elevator or stairs and as you walk out, you will see a McDonald's on the corner, turn left to the walkway and end of the walkway turn right and you will see people waiting in line for bus. Find Q13 which is right in front of Woori Bank. You can take that and it will be about 2 stops. It's on Northern Blvd between Bowne Street and Parsons Blvd. You can actually walk instead of taking the bus but if you are using a metrocard, you are getting a free transfer anyway.

Depends. It's also a time commitment, as I would be on the bus for 3.5 hours each way. Also, we should go to a restaurant after the LAN for more food.
Meanwhile, we already have 4 players for HoN, we just need one more to complete a TL NYC HoN team. Besides, we know that HoN players are the best at SC, although I think NeVeR has a shot of beating everybody there.

Is there any chance we can keep the tournament moving quickly? Newbies most definitely allowed. We usually have some people who just started playing, some who don't even play but like to spectate, and people who always lose first round (see username at the header of this post).
I was thinking of using iCCup maps sometime, but not very many people are familiar with them. Maybe after they get more popular. Some of them are flawed anyways.

Everybody is allowed! We're no elitists by any stretch of the imagination, and there's always a pretty wide range of skill levels here. We need to put the old NYC LAN FAQ up from the Amnesia lans, which is summarized as "Should I come if--" "YES. COME."

I notice that most newbies/lower ranked players feel uneasy about playing since there's so many diamond players and they have a tough time finding partners for bronze/silver/gold/plat.
So how about we designate certain areas for bronze/silver/gold/plat players? Makes it easier for them to gather and play some friendly matches if they're not in the tournament. All it takes is putting up a few signs.

I like signs! I'm down with having silver/gold and then plat/diamond sections for practice. However, the tournament will be pretty small (approximately half of the people on the actual guest list show up) and some people don't have their own SC2 accounts, so it'll most probably still be one large tournament with favored winners.

The problem is mostly that their computers cant run the game on 1920x1080 (their native resolution) without lagging. I'm pretty sure that's the only reason that I was lagging, I had to switch up the res and mouse stuff on the other computer to play decently.

I see nothing wrong with LT either. Early roach play from Zerg in close positions is strong in ZvT, and cross positions allow Zerg to expand fairly safely. LT and Metalopolis are by far the most balanced Blizz maps out there right now.

Only thing you have to pay for is your own computer time. $4 = 1 hour $8 = 3 hours
Spectators are also welcome. Last time we did it there was a spectator's area with plenty of chairs and a big screen TV. Due to the high number of matches taking place, I think only the semi-finals and finals will be played on the big screen. The rest of the time, I think you can just look over your friend's shoulder as long as you don't give away what they're doing.
We had a good number of people attending (30ish?) the previous LAN, both players and spectators alike. We had enough room and plenty of chairs.
Can we switch Steppes of War with either Metalopolis or Xel Naga for the Bo1s? Steppes of War is tiny and can be conducive to really gimmicky rushes and stuff, OK in series, but not very good for Bo1s imo.

Still not sure whether or not we're banking on patch 1.1 coming out before Saturday. Assuming that it doesn't come out, Steppes for BO1 will make the tournament as fast as possible. You can always discuss a map change with your first few opponents though.
steppes is kinda preferred to keep the matches quick, but it still has potential to turn into a long exciting game as well, the chances of having longer games on the other maps is much higher which could drag out the tournament a lot longer than last time

I guess we have a week to debate over it. I'm not liking ZvP (6 pool) and TvT (after watching Nada and TLO go at it) on the map, but 6pools can be fended off with proper crisis management.
No rules on race changing. Feel free to switch to Terran if you're losing a BO3
I just been to Cybercraft. They have their own sc2 accounts for each machine incase you don't have one(which I assume you already do). Systems seem fine. Steppes of War might be a deal breaker for me. This is just asking terran to win.
ALSO it is highly recommended that everyone bring their own earphones or whatever they use to listen to music on the go there will be headset on site but they are reeeaaally shitty, if u want to be able to hear ur units sounds or watever bring ur own earphones
I don't know about BO1 though... There will be too little lee way to earn yourself out of a bad loss / cheese / most games will be cheese / rush. I think BO3 is in order to have a real solid tournament going.
I think you should implement some custom maps into play. I mean, there are some BW ports that my fare better than the current Map Pool. For example, there are some ports for Destination, Fighting Spirt, etc. Those maps were good for play.

From what Certified and I have tried of the iCCup map pool, I can't say that I've liked any of them in particular. Many of the maps have way too much random high ground or empty area around the main that air units can exploit like crazy (think scrap station style). Destination wasn't so bad, but I doubt that people would be happy playing on a map that they aren't familiar with (in SC2 at least).
Of course, this idea shouldn't be forever scrapped. We could have an iCCup map tournament in the future if they fix half of their maps.
In other news, the next tournament will probably have a poll for the maps to be included in the map pool.

This is pretty much the idea behind all non-invite tournaments. While BO3 would be the best idea for round 1, it doesn't fit the time budget. We had 19 people last time and played in the same format; the tournament ran from 2 to 7PM. People aren't really willing to stay 7, especially when they have to travel a good distance to get home (because they are awesome and decided to come anyways :D).

Only recognition for now. Last time, the winner was reimbursed for their netcafe account. I could probably provide that this time around too. So there's technically a cash prize, but it makes you break even.

We did wait for people to finish playing each round and for the ro4 we waited for each player to play. If we are really want to do it fast just let everyone play through till the ro4 or the finals instead of waiting for everyone to finish each round.
still unsure about the food situation at the moment, chances are theres gonna be a lunch break before or after quad-finals so ppl can go out and eat watever they want in the area
It's a challenge usually involving All-You-Can-Eat Korean BBQ with Kibibit and myself. I hope you are prepared this time. However, if they are planning to order pizza, please reserve 12 slices for me. (You don't have to do this, just having refreshments is fine.)
God, just thinking about food might now makes me want to eat.

its freakin stupid, i played several ladders and everyone freakin cheesed, there was only one game that actually made it to mid-game, all the others was cheese and it either worked or didnt work,
and the one that actually made it to late game was against some reeeaaally shitty player who tried to bunker rush me and failed miserably 3 times, and i still freakin lost cuz i was zerg and he had a bioball with two thors and a few tanks

Btw this is kind of a random aside, but I've visited the NetZone in K-town a few times in the past few weeks or so, and their internet connection is simply awful. Download speeds < 10kb/sec, awful ping and sometimes packet loss ... really bad. I stopped by yesterday after dinner 'cuz I wanted to do some work remotely real fast, and they told me the internet was just flat out down. lol what the heck?
So yeah, for future NYC LANs, we probably shouldn't use NetZone in K-town...

Noted. We should find a really good netcafe in Manhattan.

Food challenge anyone?
If you want to try the spiciest food ever, there's a korean bar/restaurant about 10 blocks away from the pc bang. They sell spicy chicken feet which should be one of the hottest food you ever tried. I have yet to see anyone finish the whole thing(except me) lol. It's quite expensive(about 22 bucks with tax) but every time I go there, I must get it cuz I'm hooked on spicy food.

Cheese is fine in tournament play. I mean tournaments usually last a pretty long time and you don't want to play standard long games for all your games or else you will be very tired by the time you get to the finals.
Also it punishes those people who are trying to get ahead with very economical builds.
But since we are doing Bo1 your probably won't see that many cheese.
Certified, It was most likely me. Sorry, but this time I will make it for sure since I am already going to be in the city. I also posted the day of the tourney that I will not be coming.
I swear, I was watching that video while playing you and basically following along (until the spine crawler part). Didn't have time to watch the entire thing before playing

Compensate for their time? Why is their time more valuable than everyone else at the LAN? And why do we have to compensate them for anyone's time?
Because they had to stay the longest to win every one of their matches. Theoretically, second place should get something too but doesn't because it's a relatively small tournament. Everyone else can (and usually do) leave any time after they lose.
Anyways, since this is strictly a tournament first (and mingling second), we're just playing with the idea of a prize. Hopefully in the future we'll have enough active members in the area to have sponsered tournaments.

as of now, everything is good to go for tomorrow!!! gonna be online pretty soon if ppl wanna have another mass bnet meet up again, lol
prize pool will be tiny and will mainly cover the winners cost of using cybercraft's computers these are community events and are mainly for fun
if we ever get a sponsor to support a prize pool then we can have a big time tournament where i will be extremely strict about the rules and rage and stab anyone who disagrees with reticent or me

Funny thing is, I went to see a doctor like 10 days ago and he diagnosed me with Bronchitis and gave me some antibiotics (Clyndamycin). OK after seeing all you guys post I got excited. I blew off my appointment at 4pm (it was a networking session with investment bankers, fuck em!) and am coming now. I will be there at around 2:30. Would it be a waste for me to come? Or will there be people just playing practice games too?
Thank you everyone for coming to the tournament. It was a bit unorganized since we had 20 more people than expected on the brackets and had to finish at around the same time. Still couldn't have done it without everyone's cooperation though. We will probably keep these tournaments separate from the LAN parties since a lot more people show up for the competition. Any comments or suggestions for future tournaments are appreciated. (We might start having a very small buy-in and a sign up deadline next time.)
holy freakin cow that was insane, running a 45+ ppl tourney is a ton of work im probly not gonna have a voice tomorrow
in the future, tournaments like this will likely be a buy-in for a larger prize pool and excuse for stricter rules to keep it even more organized
NOTE: if a larger prize pool is expected chances are it will be run as an official tourney and late comers will NOT be allowed to participate we will have to see how things turn out before we make a final decision on that
I did have to drop out of the tourney to keep this event organized so i will be online and ready to have some fun on bnet tonight if anyone wants to join me

Gonna call bullshit on this.
there wasn't 20 on the table, or we would have seen it
also, the normal reaction would be "hey guys my card got declined, can you help me out" or something like that. I know all of us would have had no problems with it. You don't just get up and leave without saying anything.
Didn't see the 20 at the table and none of the waiters/servers at the place said anything about that :3
But if you do pay us back I guess that's fine, the bill we had to cover came to be about ($88? someone confirm). It would be a hassle to find all 12 people who chipped in and pay them back, but I guess we can work on that eventually. More motivation for people to come to future LANs! xD
Don't really care what happens, if we get the money back it'd be fine. Big thanks to everyone who did help chip in.
Anyways the LAN was really fun, met some awesome people, I'll definitely go again if I'm around for the next one. Cheers.
Yeah the LAN was a lot of fun. We should definitely do it again soon. doesn't have to be a 40 person tournament either lol. Nice tournament though I got to semi finals before Nesh raped me.
Man, I don't give a shit about the money. It's the ethics that's the problem here. I mean, you essentially made us look like dickheads at the place, and we had to spend half an hour sorting out your mess. You didn't even tell us anything about your card getting declined. In fact, we didn't even notice you guys left cause you were apparently trying so hard to sneak out.
Plus, why would you leave money at the table? That's the dumbest thing you could possibly do. Any waiter passing by would just snag it and pocket the cash.
So yeah, I'm with ZoW on calling bullshit.
All that stuff aside, the LAN was really fun. Didn't get to play in it cause I got there so late, but the after party and meeting everyone was well worth the trip. Hope we get to do this again some time!
Of course it's bullshit. I think it's even worse that he bothered to lie lol. I'm actually more annoyed. but I know I will never get that money back, and I know that I and everyone else there got swindled and theres not much we can do about it. So I don't care anymore lol, fuck you Zeratul haha
thanks to the people that arent getting emotional" " zow : goobus : pet[uk] " " first i would like to say my girls card did get declined :2nd I left most of my cash at my house and like all girls they bring there purses everywhere. also, we did leave 20$ on the table, my girl and i figured the least we could do was tip the waitress. thank you everyone else for actually realizing i wasn't intentionally trying to interfere with your bill. i was under the impression that they weren't aware that we even knew each other.i will pay you guys back, moneys not an issue. no hard feelings im sorry again to those who chipped in and aren't being inconsiderate.
Alright. So you did leave money. $20 to pay for an $88 tab. Way to go. Still don't see how that vindicates you in any way whatsoever. Even if none of the other guys were there, that still would've been a massively dick move. Once again, I don't give a shit about the money. It's the fact that people can be so moronic as to think they can pull this shit and get away with it. How old are you, really? You were gonna eat and run on the premise that the restaurant didn't know you were associated with us? C'mon, dude.
I can't believe you're getting so defensive and douchey about this. Stop trying to make yourselves look better...the way I see it, either the restaurant or the rest of us TL guys would've gotten fucked over on this.
Kind of sucks about the money afterword :\ But I ducked out early to meet some friends in manhattan!

It's one thing to leave the restaurant without paying and then forcing 12 other people to pay your 88$ tab, and then it's another to call people who cleaned up the mess, paid for the rest of the tab, explained how sorry we were to the waitress about the situation, inconsiderate. Seriously, what is going through your mind? Not only did you screw everybody there over, but it probably wasn't going to be the last time we are going to eat there after the LAN center, so what do you think the staff is going to think when they see us walk in, and trust me, they WILL remember because of what happened.
I still don't understand why any of this is justifiable, you left 20$ on the table? Awesome, if you did, which I'm also going to call you didn't, still would have left us with a 68$ dollar bill. Please, do yourself a favor, never show up to any TL meetup again, these are the type of things nobody wants to happen during a LAN party, there were a bunch of faces I have never seen before, what does that say to them? You're just giving everybody a bad name. Then to call US inconsiderate, you should seriously check your mental state.
Hey I was at the LAN but didn't go to the dinner but give this guy some break. I think he got enough bashing. I don't think he called anyone inconsiderate. He left the tip because that was the best he could do at the time. Not that it will make a big difference but he did apologize and said he will pay back next time he comes. Give him the benefit of the doubt. Who knows he might actually show up to the next LAN, pay his money and everything goes well. After all, everyone had fun there except the last incident.

yeah i agree, BO1's were probably the only viable option though seeing as it was 40+ people, but BO1's are way too short. With that said we didn't finish until 7 pm lol. but you can attribute that to people not being around for their matches. I'm not really sure if that can be helped though...

The funny part is, I don't think we could ever do that, everyone literally kept throwing money into the pool until the bill was paid in full, including the 15% tip. Everyone handled that situation quite awesomely, and I thank you guys again for it.

Can't be taken in any other way BUT calling the people who called him out inconsiderate, which is, coincidentally, inconsiderate. I'm definitely one to give the benefit of a doubt, but It takes a lot of reaching to do. It ends up boiling down to either what you guys did was really fucked up, or really stupid, depending on whether or not you take the excuse at face value.
If we have a real tournament with BO3's up to BO5's, it might even have to be split into two days. You always gotta account for the REALLY long macro games that happen every so often.
We should probably hold off on a bigger tournament until winter break, anytime before that you are making people pretty much commit to an ENTIRE weekend which is a lot of time + money.

I'd be all for splitting the tourney into two days, with one being a group stage day and the other being a final tourney day. The only real problem would be getting people to clear TWO days on their schedule, though.

Yea we could have like a big tourney (5$ buyin or something for a pretty damn large prizepool) over a couple days on winter break (hopefully not while I'm in minnesota :D). I'd be up for a 1-2$ buyin for a 1 day tour though.

I'm not trying to be an ass. But think about it. You'd be pissed too if you were in our situation. I can get over the money, but the fact is you made us all look like a bunch of douchebags in front of everyone in the restaurant. Its exactly as goobus and blixy said, the fact you didn't say ANYTHING to the rest of us and just left is the problem, which is the reason I have a hard time believing you.
This also adds in the problem of people being weary during future meetups. We've had 8+ meetups so far, and nothing like this has happened before yesterday. Like it or not your group has indirectly ruined many of the future meetups. There's always going to be that lingering bitterness about this one time, even for people who weren't there. To quote chill on the whole DC issue:
Team Liquid prides itself on having a strong, mature community. As we continue to grow in numbers, this tight-knit community is something we will fight to preserve. Believe it or not, saying you are a Team Liquid member carries weight in the RTS community across the world. I've witnessed it first hand.
There's a certain level of trust we give to people who show up to these, based solely on the fact that you are a TL member. People are expected to be mature and honest, and that's why meeting up with a bunch of nerds from the internet you don't even know can work out so well. Everyone trusts each other not to be an asshole.
I'm not saying you 100% intentionally walked out without paying and leaving it to the rest of us, but again, the normal reaction would be to actually SAY SOMETHING instead of just leaving. It just looks really shady the way you did it. Either way, I hope this all gets sorted out and that you weren't lying, for the sake of future meetups.
i wasnt there, i dont kno how this all went down but i think itd be best if zeratul/james just pays everyone back
as for whats been said and the implications made about ppl's character is for u guys to deal with
he seemed like a perfectly nice guy at the event cola was matched up against both james and phil, and states they were both cool james was extremely cooperative the whole time
he was NOT mia for any of his matches, i gave him permission to leave and get lunch at one point because his first round match was super long and he was behind in matches so i had to have him play his second round match during everyones lunch break meaning he didnt have a lunch break so to not let him go would be effed up
LOL he left without saying anything about it? That throws the whole honesty thing out the window imo. I would just avoid doing anything with this person instead of taking it out as image on TL.
When i attend blizzcon 09 I went to the meet-up at the convention center..Let me put it like this there was alot of money spent by some people there, for people they did not even know. Such great place to attend with a bunch of people who care about other people and having the same hobby.
I must say that was the first time I ever went to a meet-up dealing with TL. It was fun with a lot of boos also :D
next event will likely be a LAN PARTY revolving around mingling and just hanging out, and then a separate event will be another tourney, whether or not thats how its gonna turn out is still unknown
time wise it will be during winter break when ppl generally have off
the tourney was a Bo1 because it was expected to be 20ish ppl and a one day event, we had absolutely no idea 50 ppl were gonna show up thats partially why the next events should be split between a lan party and a tournament, one small event and then a large tournament
as for a larger tournament with a large prize pool we are looking at a two or more day event given the current venue with a prize pool at stake, single elim would not be fair more details will be provided when the time comes
as for this past event, it was run the way it was for the sake of organization
we played it out round by round because there simply arent enough computers to support all the matches there were other customers playing other games since we did not reserve the whole place, only a small section i am sure most of u heard me calling out for open computers so tournament matches could be played
i tried to have as many matches played at a time to keep things moving the fact that it ended at roughly the same time as lan7, despite there being over twice as many ppl this time, shows it wasnt too poorly played out
i have been to dozens of tournaments and i do the best with the information i have
This is why it is freakin important to have a guest list and that ppl actually sign up on it chances are, for next tournament, if there is a prize pool, all participants will have to sign up and anyone who doesnt sign up on the designated list will not be allow to participate
btway (NOT ME) let a ton of ppl slide with sign ups for the tournament, if a large prize is at stake, the rules will be extremely strict and enforced at all times because it would be unfair to everyone who bothered to show up on time to have to wait for you
there was a 30min grace period this time, dont expect more than maybe 10 if we run it like an official tournament
Look guys... I was pissed the food was bad and I was paying 30 dollars for me my girlfriend, and my brother. Her card did get declined and I did leave money on the table. Inconsiderate was the wrong word, I just hoped people would be more understanding. I had no idea that you guys were gonna get stuck with my tab. We were sitting at a seperate table entirely, had I known you would get screwed I obviously would've said something to you, and worked something out. That being said, I apologize to everyone that had to deal with my shit, and thank you for doing so. i'll chip in extra for the next after tourney dinner. Maybe I'll take it easier on you guys in our next match . Anyway I hope this situation is deaded... finally
Had a blast. Big turnout. Thanks to btway+certified for the organization and keeping it all together.
I'm glad we had a ZvT finals, though it would've likely been TvT if Pokebunny stayed. I rooted for the underdog Zeroes, but Nesh pulled out some fancy (mind) tricks and all around awesome play. I had the chance to personally get crushed by Nesh after the buffet too, which was fun. Good stuff. GL to Nesh in MLG!
Regarding the whole unpaid dinner bill:
Honestly as I left the LAN last night I felt like I had been done. I watched scenarios like this go down on The Real Hustle but I wouldn't even consider it with the TL crowd. I did not expect to see or hear from James, his brother and girlfriend again.
However, because you responded here, I'm giving you some benefit of the doubt. From your first response, I gathered you were trying to save face from not having money and assuming the restaurant regarded your table as a separate party (a careless assumption if so). There was no $20, and if there was, we didn't see any of it. I think the general consensus is that if you had actually told us of your situation instead of swindling the restaurant and leaving without a word, there would be no misunderstanding - and as a conglomerate I'm certain we would have figured out a way to spot you guys.
You seemed to be a good person at the tournament. At this point, I think it would be best if you took the responsibility of returning the money that you owe to the people who voluntarily or involuntarily footed the bill for you.
edit: tldr: No hard feelings, make it up next time.
just throwing the idea out there and if its not making any sense please just ignore.
but what about an online tourney in the near future with only people from NY. Still a lot to organize with an online tourney but at least we wouldn't run out of space and computers.
Just a thought... since a lot of you guys are hanging out and playing together on bnet anyway.

I'm sorry I let people participate in the tournament?
Nah nobody's blaming you for anything... it was not a serious tournament with a big prize pool so being nice was the right thing... although for future tournaments if they are more serious then we'll have to do it how Certified has laid out.

Okay. I want us to figure out exactly who helped cover you rather than ('a bunch of us'). Someone pm me with that information if you can...
For those who owe money: I think it's very important to settle this as best we can before the next dinner/etc. Otherwise it will be too confusing (if people who lent money want to agree to exchange cash at the next meetup or whatever then that's up to them... but it should be planned ahead of time). Once this is taken care of there will be no hard feelings.
Most of all, it goes without saying that there will be no attempts to screw over restaurants! If you have some kind of a problem the best thing is always to just let us know. We will all try to help each other out. This would have been a non-issue if there was proper communication.
Had a really good time, don't really care to much about being paid back, I figured they were just to embarrassed about finding out they didnt have cash after the people who didnt eat left. But in the future, don't be quiet about some problem your having, being at a TL meetup implies you could be homeless or drunk and we would take care of you, I know firsthand
lol 30$ for 3 people. Oh man.. It's practically 30$ per person there on the weekend. Bad food? No way! Don't say the food was bad when you don't have the cash. Also what kind of guy relies on the woman to pay the bill? So bad...
Anyway, I hope you guys get this sorted out. One of you guys should just meet up with him some time in the near future to get the money he owes+tip. Then just split it back to whoever chipped in =P
It was my first time there as a spectator. My friend ended up being late so he couldn't even play but I stuck around to get a feel for things. I felt we could have used the LCD a bit more. Specifically to spectate more of the games being played instead of another tourney elsewhere =P
Next time you guys should just get separate bills per table there to reduce the confusion + math at the end.
Why hello there, just finally made my account after being severely hung over all day yesterday. To whomever challenged me to a drinking contest and then left, I couldn't let that go. So, I challenged myself to a drinking contest, AND I WON.
Anyway, my SC2 handle is DrunkMetroid 715, reddit handle is ehrlics, hit me up if you want to play a bad protoss player.
And thanks again to everyone organizing the event, really was a blast and I'm really looking forward to the next one. I like the idea of a 1 to 5$ buy in, would make things more interesting and intense. Looking forward to seeing you guys again, and getting crushed in the tourney.

Welcome to Teamliquid! I hope to see you at the next TL-NYC gathering.
So... Who has their girlfriend pay for their dinner with her card in the first place? Character fault imo.
Anyways, it would be nice to have just LANs and tourneys separate. Of course it is selfish of me to say this, but when everyone is just playing sc2/watching sc2, it's kinda lame. Just make it official: don't make it NYC LAN like every other one has been, even adding the numbers to make it seem like its the same shit. It's not. This was NYC SC2 tourney 1. Has nothing to do with a group of 10-20 people who would play 4v4 BGH (SC1) and eat KBBQ together. The way I see it there was no point for anyone who didn't play SC2 to go there, only interactions I had with SC2 people was 1. asking btway a few questions, 2. smoking with ZoW, 3. talking to SC1 old timers and earlier NYC LAN members (Phelix, Clazz, Nesh, etc.).
Either way, congrats on a great turn-out and hopefully things will run more smoothly with the food/tourney next time.

Granted I was out of town for all the NYC LANs but that's not my fault! D:
Oh, jindesu, could you ask zeroes where I can buy those noise proof earmuff things? might as well buy two pairs for future tourneys so we can continuously cast games as they're being played.
Also, for the next tourney I attend, I'll bring a camera and a few SD cards to take decently high quality videos of the next one, so there isn't only replays. Also, all for getting my ass handed to me at some BW too

He has the older ones I think, I'll check with him whenever he's available. Also - if you are getting ear muffs for group use, make sure to bring some sorta disposable wipes lol
Vids and pictures of the actual players playing sounds awesome.
One more big problem to solve is how to make the brackets easily accessible. We might end up writing the brackets by hand on a huge piece of paper and sticking it to the wall. Brackets will be pregenerated next time anyways.
Yeah that sounds good. I think it would probably be best to separate the casual LANS and the tourney's, it was just that there wasn't a lot of computers open due to the sheer amount of people. So the computers were really used strictly for the tournament. So basically if it's a smaller number of people, it can be both, and if it's a large number, you have to do either or. I would enjoy both though... strictly SC2 or the casual BGH's from BW.

There's a BGH map made somewhere, Zeroes showed it to me. I'd LOVE to play casuals in either BW or SC2... tourneys are fun and all, but being knocked out early by the champ in both LANs is sorta discouraging lol...

Are you pretty close with the owners for Cybercraft? If they could get a whiteboard up or something, that'd be great for bracket making.

There is but it's not half as fun as BGH for sc1. There's something about being able to easily control HUGE amounts of your army at once that just kills the fun of having a giant army
Also, the one time I played BGH during beta, freaking Blink Stalkers came right into my base thanks to crappy mapping. I'm sure they've fixed it by now, but still.
Edit: We had a whiteboard for the first meetup, but their stand was ridiculously unstable so we just did it all electronically. Maybe they can afford a new stand now
That's where i got the ear muffs from. You need ear bud headphones tho because you still can hear a little bit if people are too loud.
They come in handy if you want to listen to music in the subway too.

I think if even with the ear muffs and earplug headphones, if you want to show their games on the TV, better to move the players waaay in the back. And hire someone to watch Pokebunny put on his earmuffs too =p

Yeah, even if I had an overlord over said 4gate, hearing everyone yell "4 gate!" out loud definitely sucked. XD
ALSO: We need to set up some sub-coordinators so that it's not just Certified screaming at the top of his lungs to get ahold of people, like assigning groups of players together to help keep track of where everyone else in their group is.

I talked to one of the guys at the netcafe today, and we agreed to meet up next weekend to discuss future tournaments and possible sponserships. If there's anything you'd like me to bring up (ideas, suggestions for improvements, etc.) about the tournaments, just shoot me a PM or respond to this thread.
We should try a round robin grouping one of these days, will give people a chance to play a few more games in tournament, and all that, it might take a bit longer, though.

Cybercraft will sponsor us? If so that would be awesome.
I think people want more games instead of bo1 maybe group that way people don't get matched up and knocked by very good people beginning of the tourney.
More commentated games with the big screen and maybe get someone to commentate I want to see if Cholera feels like coming out of retirement.

Well, there are no bigger internet cafés around, so unless someone has a huge house that can accommodate 50+ people, I think this is the best solution we got.
Time could be a problem because a 40+ people tournament already took ~5 hours, imagine if we had to do round robin or Bo3s with not enough computers...it could take all day!
Sheep and Smix will never meet since one of them will always be away from New York City. Maybe next time, we should go to a karaoke bar and drink for those who are legal age of course.

We could easily shave off an hour or two of time simply by having more than two people doing the actual coordination. Now, if we increase the number of people with administrative duties from 2 to 6, I can almost guarantee we'd be able to do a Bo1 until semis tourney in 3 1/2 hours, especially due to how one sided and quick many of the games were.

I'll give a huge heap of appreciation to the two administrators we had (/give), who did a great job and hosted a great event, but it does seem like larger, more aggressive organization is the only way the event could grow. We will not find a bigger cyber-cafe in New York City and none of us has a house. (Fucking no one has a house here.)
BTW I am definitely not volunteering myself, because that shit is hard.
Also, the event will grow, whether you plan for it or not. NYC Lan 7.5 was awesome enough that the next one will definitely have more people.
