I think we should have an sc2 lan at the old gooser/guru house. It would be swell, and we'd all be on level terms. (sort of?)

Umm..... UO got several first-places in the Macleans categories last time..... The best Carleton got was a #7. Better than the #42 it was, but still..... Unfortunately, Ottawa and Carleton are not in the same category in the 'official' rankings, Ottawa being classified as a medical school and Carleton as a comprehensive school. This makes it impossible to compare them to each other directly using those rankings. Ottawa placed ninth and Carleton seventh overall in their respective groups, but they're not being compared to each other, only to others in the same category.
Since I wasn't claiming Carleton was a good university, only that Ottawa was worse, those rankings don't really make a point for either side.
The student response polls, on the other hand, allow the two universities to be compared directly, since they are all grouped together. Out of nine main questions, Carleton placed above Ottawa in seven. Ottawa placed in the bottom ten in nearly every single poll. In the additional web-only questions, Ottawa placed last or second last in five out of seven polls, and lower than Carleton in every single poll.
Some particularly noteworthy ones were:
Supportive Campus Environment- Ottawa dead last Satisfaction with the quality of teaching- Ottawa dead last Satisfaction with decision to attend- Ottawa second last Evaluation of overall educational experience (senior years)- Ottawa second last If you could start over, would you go to this university (senior years)- Ottawa dead last
Carleton was somewhere in the middle for most of those polls.
All the information I used is available here: http://oncampus.macleans.ca/education/rankings/

*cracks knuckles*
"best overall", determined by experts, is as follows (note that neither university are actually in the top 10, however, Ottawa is 10 higher than Carleton):
+ Show Spoiler +Waterloo McGill Alberta Toronto UBC McMaster Queens Western Saskatchewan Sherbrooke
For the answers to the questions you've shown, the top 10 schools in the questions are as follows:
Question 1+ Show Spoiler +Redeemer Trinity Western Mount Allison King's St Francis Xavier Nipissing UNB St Thomas UNBC Fraser Valley Question 2+ Show Spoiler + Redeemer King's Mount Allison Trinity Western Nipissing St Francis Xavier UNB UNBC St Thomas UOIT
Question 3+ Show Spoiler + King's Redeemer Mount Allison Trinity Western St Thomas UNB NSAC Nipissing St Francis Xavier Saint Marys
Question 4+ Show Spoiler + Redeemer King's Fraser Valley St Thomas Brock Trinity Western UNB NSAC Saskatchewan Simon Fraser
Question 5+ Show Spoiler + Redeemer Trinity Western King's Mount Allison St Thomas St Francis Xavier UNB Nipissing Fraser Valley McGill
Question 6+ Show Spoiler + Redeemer King's Mount Allison Victoria UOIT UNBC Trent Winnipeg NSAC UBC
Question 7+ Show Spoiler + King's Redeemer Trinity Western Mount Allison St Francis Xavier St Thomas NSAC Nipissing Wilfred Laurier UNBC
Note how many of the universities in the top 10, determined by the experts in Macleans, happen to coincide with those in the top 10 as chosen by the voters of these survey questions..... Not even freaking close..... I only noticed McGill showing up once.....
I'd like to know how you decided that judgemental questions such as those posed in the questions are of any value when people rarely actually attend multiple universities, so they can't even get a proper comparison.....
Carleton is the lower ranked university, thank you very much. Source.

That chart is based on the reputations university's have from business, university, and high school officials, not on hard data. I don't see how the opinions of those people are any more or less relevant than the opinions of the students who go to the school.
Ottawa is perceived as better than Carleton by those people because it has a med school and more graduate programs (ie. it's part of the medical/doctoral group of schools, not the comprehensive). The only non-med school in the top ten is Waterloo. And we all know how insanely hyped-up Waterloo's reputation is.
In the actual data based polls, Waterloo doesn't even come first in it's category. But it's so known for being 'cutting-edge' that it gets #1 on the reputation poll anyway.
The hard data rankings are by far more useful than the reputation or student response polls, but as I mentioned before, Carleton and Ottawa are in different categories for those.
From what I can see, the rankings tell us the following: In terms of actual data Carleton and Ottawa cannot be directly compared, but both are about average in their category. You may find it easier to get a job with a degree from Ottawa, because, as a medical/doctoral school, it has a moderately better reputation than Carleton. However, if your experience as a student is average, you would regret choosing to go to Ottawa and be very unsatisfied with the education you received, as opposed to being fairly ambivalent about the choice to go to Carleton.
Also, if you choose Ottawa, you'll do much better overall in CSL, but you'll be the only team to lose an ace match to Carleton. :D

I'm from Ottawa and live near Carleton. I'd be interested in playing some games, I was a pretty high ranking diamond player during the Beta.

Don't worry, I won't clutter the thread anymore. Me and Rigel have taken it to PMs.
However, I will say this - we NEED to organize something for the end of September, at latest.

While I can't speak for the quality of education since I've only experienced Waterloo, I have met lots of other students who have been from other universities (since I do waterloo engineering, I do alot of co-op).
I'll say this: On average they're about as smart as my friends from Waterloo and perhaps know about as much(this is hard to judge, but there is not a huge gap) but noticeably less professional and the work is more polished (probably because we have so much work experience). Employers like that.
Remember, you're going to university so that you can get a job after. That's your goal. That's why employer rankings are perhaps the most important rankings of all, unless you decide to attend grad school (in which case nobody is going to look at your undergrad anyways).
But there should be an event in Ottawa before the end of the month! After all, when you're back in school alot of people will have less time to devote to Starcraft >_>

so... who wants to give me a guest pass? LOL. omg im so lame, id rather use up all your guest passes on multiple bnet accounts instead of buy the game.

I live in Ottawa. I go to Ottawa U, which is why Carleton sucks. If I went to Carleton, Ottawa U would suck, that's how it works. Anyway I'm a bronze player but I mostly do 2v2s with another friend from here so not really interested in getting my ass kicked constantly by you guys.

Wish, just go for a week without the bud, you'll be able to afford the game.
And I got placed in silver in the last stretch of the beta.....
|
I grew up in Ottawa, but now I live near Belleville, going to Ottawa for some Sens games this winter though :D

Oh man, glad to see this thread is still alive.
I've finally moved into a new place, and finally got internet hooked up (it's a long story), and sc2 finally came out, and servers are finally working.
I've lost everyone's IDs, for obvious reasons, but I guess we only need to re-add everyone one more time.

My id is Rigel.753. Add me, I'm up for a game any time.
