midas first is normal since quas wex isnt really viable atm unless u are up against a mid thats you heavily outmatch. i general i would pick invoker if i know im up against a mid whom i can easily last hit against using exort, never leaving the lane and using suntrike to help out with ganks or a set up stun. by 20 minutes if everything went well ill be massively ahead in levels and should have phase aghs and forcestaff and just dominate teh mid game. the midas speeds all of this up both in gold and in level. but i wouldnt get boots of travels unless im getting all the kills from sunstrike.

Yeah, random support into instant repick "we don't have a carry" are the worst, especially since its like a 50% chance for them to go jungle naix.
And I'm hypothetically playing with decent players here. People who should understand that having a carry is not a prerequisite for winning dota, especially pub dota.
I mean, if nothing else I would have played that rubick in a heartbeat and saved us all some gold

"Need the levels".. I don't even know where to.. Midas on Invoker is fairly common, Travels not so much. Maybe he plays on Fnatic or something. Invoker is capable of snowballing hard if he plays good in the midgame. Midas only delays that and pushes you further into the lategame instead. I see very few situations where I would go midas on him unless I was going for pure rightclick carry..which he obviously didn't considering his 2 next items was force staff and BKB. I thought midas only takes like 17 minutes to pay for itself in terms of gold. also invoker needs exp badly. I see a lot of invokers build midas, don't really think its a bad choice

It's situational and often bad in pubs.
I like it better on a safe lane Invoker than on mid.

I'm all for it on safelane invoker. You'll most likely be with someone else and behind on XP, Midas is a must if you're going to attempt to stay competitive in terms of levels (and invoker is one if not the most level dependant hero in the game after all). But in mid, you're already getting levels, and your killing potential will already be there. Why not bolster it by getting items that actually helps you 1. not die and 2. kill others? Phaseboots, forcestaff, Euls and Scepter are absolutely fantastic items to have on Invoker. I don't feel like delaying them for 17 minutes is worth it unless you plan on being super rightclickly in the lategame, in which case Midas into whatever carry build is decent. But failing mid, then going midas seems like an absolute stupid thing to do.
Not to mention the boots of travel is literally retarded. You have no need for them in the midgame whatsoever.
Building into forcestaff and bkb from there might seem like "useful items" at first glance, but what do you have now? You have 1 item which helps attackspeed barely. You have one item which helps positioning, and one item which helps you against spells for a couple of seconds. Those items are only useful if you're actually of any use in the battlefield in the first place. Where is your mana? Where is your damage? Where is your cc? Where is your health?
Absolutely horrendous build in any way whatsoever.. And in my opinion he was the 4th worst player in that match. Yay for random mm!

It really depends on how fast you can get it, and how much teamfighting is going to happen. From my personal experience, if I can get a midas reasonably quick, then I end up stomping the game. Later than that and...well, it aint pretty.
anyhow, my QQ: played two games
first game - my team (5 carries) vs theirs (TI3 lineup), we end up going 15-2 in the first 10 minutes before one of them abandons. Wat.
second game - nyx mid that doesn't gank, support wisp that contests for last hits, omni that goes carry mode. Enemy team has wards, dust, tps, they're even nicer people! oh and their mid Tiny had like midas aghs blink daedelus AC at 30 minutes. For shits and giggles his 6th item was dagon. also all of them spoke english compared to the 0! people on my team that spoke english.
VALVE WHAT IS THIS MATCHMAKING
edit: ^you seriously underestimate how much the levels affect Invoker's value. By your logic, Dendi's "blink and forcestaff first" don't help him do anything, neither does N0tail's Travel's first (yeah he went travels first - and proceed to dominate the game)

Travel first on who? Invoker? Link please!
Blink and fs are decent items to get first (altough I'd skip the blink quite frankly) on Invoker, because your spells do a lot of damage in the midgame, and better position helps you deal more dmg to more enemy heroes (and catch up/run away as a bonus). But they fade off over time (especially after you hit exort roof), and what you need then is items that help you dish out more dmg, cc, and mana (mana first tbh. And Euls is great at covering two of those). BkB I wouldn't get on invoker until after scepter tbh, or unless they had a stupid amount of cc or something else that kept you from doing your job.

Ferrari goes Midas first every single game on pubvoker. Just sayin'.

N0tail going Euls->Travels
my bad, he went Euls first and abused the 'max exort euls' combo which I find kinda cheesy, but the point stands. As long as you get the levels, you should be able to pull your weight.

Anyone getting a lot of South Americans lately? Just lost a game because a dude from Peru (who was mid) had a bad connection and ending up saying in chat that he was leaving because it was unplayable.

Oh man. New here. This is exactly the sort of thread I needed.
I'm a mid-level player. Most players that I am matched with know how to play pretty well. You get decent team compositions, knowledgeable players, that sort of stuff. When you sort my replays, a few of them have started to show up under "high".
In any case, I played a game of RD the other day where I picked a CM support. I got wards, flying courier, etc. Stacked camps, pulled, denied, harassed. Ward vision never went down, and it protected us from several attempted ganks. Set up first blood for my laning partner, an Alchemist. Y'know, being a good little support. Made a few positioning mistakes, got killed a few times. Totally my bad, but it's pretty damn hard to not die every engagement as a CM. I'm like 0-5-12 or something.
So we're like 35 minutes into the game and doing pretty well. Alchemist is balling out of control. We've got all their T1s and one of their T2s. We lose a huge teamfight in their jungle. I don't know why we were there, but Alch didn't show up and we decided to fight anyway. I do my little CM thing and we wipe except for Alch. The team begins asking me where my shadow blade is. They say that if I had my "core" we wouldn't have lost that teamfight. I explain to them that I have had very little money since I've been buying wards, support items, mek, etc, while not stealing farm from Alchemist and that I likely wouldn't finish a shadow blade (I also explained that I thought a BKB would probably be a better idea since they'd likely have dust to counter the shadow blade on Alch) before the end of the game. They say that I'm full of bullshit and I should go find some fucking farm so that I can get my core so I don't throw this game.
This happened like two weeks ago, and my rage has only just begun to subside.
|
well, to start with, welcome to Dota&TL! enjoy, even though we all rage way too much over this game
secondly, ungrateful teammates are a dime a dozen, learn to not give a shit about them. Shit happens, it's a shame you didn't win, don't take it too hard.
thirdly, I might be wrong on this part but isn't a Ghost Scepter better for CM?

So I play a game as random Sven. I'm laning with a Leshrac vs a Dark Seer. We can't really get a kill because Lesh is stacking and pulling and Dark Seer is playing super save. Life is hard vs Ion Shell but I have decent farm. Teamfights keep going back and forth. I keep dying quickly but have a ton of assists because my team can clean up. In the end we take a rax when they push a t2 tower without tp's. A teamfight later we manage to kill 3 of them and take second rax. It was close but they call 'gg' and we win it in the end. Or did we?

Nope! Server dies with the Ancient at 26hp...
Next game I random Void and my team picks Pudge, Meepo, Medusa and Clinkz. I get a 30 minute Battlefury, can't farm because they are pushing rax, and either get raped in my Chrono or can't get it of because I die in chainstuns. Next game I random Huskar, lane with a Sven who auto attacks the creepwave so we can't kill PL or Lich. Bottom feeds to a solo Lone Druid, our mid Luna does nothing but complain and in other news, Lifestealer is still a stupidly powerfull hero.
Sigh, I didn't really mind losing those last 2 games if only that Sven game counted. But nope, wasn't meant to be...

Something that is awfully annoying is selecting English only in the language filter and still getting tons of non-English speaking players. :/

I love it when their mid leaves, walks back to base, and then walks into a side lane to hopefully gank back the lost xp. I call missing, 3 minutes later he shows up and kills someone.
"fukn noob no mis"
Bro we stopped laning a while ago, if you're gonna play music to drown out my mic that's dandy, but don't try and act surprised.

I've started to ping mid and then use the chatwheel "Missing" about once every 30 seconds when mid is ss. It's amazing how much more often people react when you get their attention with a ping first.
Of course, if you actually ping them when they're overextended, you get "stfu noob." Pinging my own lane seems to be a convenient in-between that gets their attention but doesn't cause them to rage-feed to prove me wrong.

When I look for a game it takes like 10 or more mins... and on the games someone always quits... FUCK SOLO MM.

AP game, I pick Invoker but clinkz calls mid so I go top with Pugna. We shut down Rhasta and Naix, denying everything forcing them to buy more regen or go back to base. Our bottom lane - safe lane mind you since we're sentinel - is rubick and skeleton king, up against SB and Veno. Should be a breeze, right?
Bottom feeds the first three kills to SB, before skele gets to level 6. SB proceeds to steamroll down to middle and pick up clinkz which boosts nyx assassin. By the time we get a couple kills on top, the Nyx and SB ganking crew rolls through and wipes us out. The next 30 minutes are spent playing as defensive as possible but never being able to stop SB and Nyx from going where they want.
The worst part about losing was seeing naix and rhasta get freefarm for the next 25 minutes before coming in and dominating me again. You know you have them beat but they don't even need to contribute for their team to win. UGH

My friend did a new meta last night. He randomed KotL. After like 20 seconds he hit repick, wait until last second and choose.. wait for it.. mother fucking KotL and proceed to suck with it.
|
Picked tide, supporting void at bottom who doesn't want to last hit under tower, watch top lane axe and centaur went 3-10 combined to slark and windrunner, and a mid od who was struggling with astronomical ping...yeah.
