If PL gets decent farm while your team is losing their lanes, of course it will be hard to stop him. That being said, there are also good hero counters against PL. He is far from being OP or poorly designed. Sadly, people just don't know how or don't want to deal with him in public games.

know what I need to do in a lot of fights, and while my knowledge isn't perfect I feel like I know how to build most of the heroes I play properly. However, every fucking time we get in a big engagement its like my goddam fingers stop working. I know what I want done, but instead of forcing my ally out of the smoke and lifting riki I manage to do something like force a creep out of the smoke and then drop a ward in it. I don't understand why my fingers don't work. So frustrating

Learn from each fight. In the lull between team fights, think about your skills, their skills, and how you'd use what when (don't worry about minor skills; just the major ones).
