Will this heatsink work?

I have an I5 2500k and I want to overclock it to 4.0 ghz. Will the Cosair H40 work? It's on sale for 34 dollars. Thanks.

Yes it'd work but anything below an H80 is not worth it.

It's pretty bad for 34 dollars AFAIK. 4ghz on sandy bridge is hardly an overclock too

You probably want a Hyper 212+ for ~$20

You can get it to 4 on stock cooler. If you plan on going to 4.3-4.5, that's when I'd look to a 3rd party cooler.

Thanks for the quick reply. Cyro, the hyper 212 is the same price as the Cosair 34 at NCIX and newegg. What's better between the two. I'd love tp get a good one for 20 $

i run my 2500k at 4.5 with a hyper 212 and have no cooling issues. take that for what it's worth.

$25 but you might find it for $20 on some random site if $5 matters to you. The "newer version" is the evo, which is more expensive but not really better performance

I'd take the 212 over a h40

Purchased the 212 EVO for 29 dollars. Overclocked the cpu to 4.8ghz. Ran prime95 for 30 minutes and averaged 75c. Iam impressed.

Average max temp was 75. At first one core hit 81 then they cooled Dow n. Voltage 1.32. Was stable all night.

That's really sweet. How did you get to the 1.32 value? I'm suprised by how easily you took this =P

I watched a YouTube video for my mobo and cpu. He did 1.35 but I wanted to try less and it was stable. Thanks for the compliment I guess my first attempt at installing a heatsink with thermal paste went well.

You should probably try lowering further for basic testing, if you can go 1.32 4.8 then you have a better than normal CPU, you might be able to do 1.3 or 1.28 etc. See how low you can make pass 5 mins IBT, if it's not much lower then just stay with that you have, but if it is then you can lower it and get better temps, or go up 100mhz etc. If you were not crashing, you have no idea how good the CPU is
