I got a pretty good Corsair PSU so I'll be overclocking quite a bit, anyone know what clock speeds I could expect with air cooling for the 3770K? Getting a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus for ~200 yen, any other CPU cooler recommendations in the same price range would be appreciate as well.

I am assuming you mean rmb not yen, because there's no way in hell you can get a hyper 212 for 200 yen: Hyper 212 is probably the go-to one for that price range. You should be able to get it for ~180 on tb (212+ not 212evo).

It's not hard to overclock any chip, intel or amd, and any overclock can be difficult by some random, totally irrelevant setting preventing stability. I don't think most people care about power consumption on a CPU for a desktop. Your talking about less than an extra lightbulb on between a power efficient and extremely inefficient CPU. Especially if your overclocking (granted, higher power cpus clock less than comparable architecture on lower power, but we're comparing fx to intel here). the FX woudl really only be considerable if you were doing specialized, professional work of some kind.

It depends on the exact software the OP is going to use. Professional, something I've generalised in the past, doesn't mean that much. I've already explained what the OP should get in a post a while ago. People seem to forget about Quicksync but it exists and if his software can use it, it will demolish any AMD system without too much effort. Unlike AMD processors, Intel processors have a huge iGPU chunk that is extremely powerful if it can be harnessed.

We have real numbers for things. Also overclockability is a valid argument for CPU purchases. However, the topic is extremely advanced as their is a random element called the chip lottery involved.

Hey man, I keep 280 watt incandescent bulbs in my bedroom, don't you? (Not to mention the fact that you're probably getting an inane amount of extra performance out of a 5Ghz 3570K versus a 4.8Ghz FX) Also: this thread has been answered already, hasn't it? Well to be fair Microcenter CPUs cost like 2/3 of what they normally cost because you pick them up in store ![]()

The 5ghz 3570k would probably win in pretty much every benchmark. It's 3.4ghz at stock, the 8350 is 4ghz at stock, so you have a 47% frequency increase on the ivy CPU and 20% on FX. Its enough to completely take over in multithreaded performance while sustaining insane lead in single threaded Well to be fair Microcenter CPUs cost like 2/3 of what they normally cost because you pick them up in store He quoted 3770k @ $210, it costs literally double that, almost exactly, in the UK and i believe there are worse prices in other places.

Well, yeah, you know I agree with that, right? Hard to read into internetz tone. And also /sarcasm on the lightbulb bit, >:OWell, it IS an FX-8150 not 8350, but that doesn't mean that doesn't mean that FX will really fair any better. I don't remember if Piledriver brought any power saving to the desktop. Yeah, I know electronics are more expensive in the UK/Europe, I definitely won't argue that. Microcenter just is unrepresentative (to a small degree) of prices in the US for CPUs though, a better comparison would be the Newegg 3770K to CPUs in Europe (Newegg being still cheaper). Not saying we aren't lucky, just that Newegg is a better comparison than Microcenter since everybody can shop from Newegg, but not everyone has a Microcenter.

We use low powered CPUs to run micro-servers, Microsoft standardized their hardware for their cellphones. Intel and AMD have a mid-range line. If it was all about pursuit of performance, these things wouldn't happen. So yeah, there is a "good enough" standard in the PC industry. We have real numbers for things. Would you also like to tell me that we have benchmarking tools? Also overclockability is a valid argument for CPU purchases. In most cases it is, In this this argument though it isn't. We haven't even established what the average overclock is on the new piledriver chips. However, the topic is extremely advanced Advanced? Is that a joke? Anyone can read a few pages from a guide. as their is a random element called the chip lottery involved. Agreed. You can get an awful chip, or a golden chip. Never know.

Your first statement is the same as mine as minimizing power consumption is also performance, it is performance per watt.

Generally we look at power scaling with clock speeds to look at its overclockability.
