Logitech Z-640 speakers not working

I found them in an old box of random hardware and I'm trying to use them now because my headphones broke. I have the center, front left, front right, and center sub speakers all connected, but not the rear speakers because those are missing. Regardless of whether I plug in the rear speaker audio cable or not, they refuse to work. I'm using windows seven and I think I've set them to default speakers. They're not muting. Both the volume knob on the center and center sub speakers are not set to lowest, and the light is on on the center speaker and the power button is depressed.

For all intents and purposes they appear to be working, but they're not. No sound emanates from these things.

I'm using windows seven, and I'm using integrated sound on my processor. The processor is the AMD phenom II x6 1090t

The audio cables are all in the correct positions and I've tried it with the rear speaker cable both plugged in and unplugged.

can anyone help? I'm seriously baffled.

EDIT: I can plug in earbuds to the center speaker but they don't make any sound but static.

EDIT 2: The system registers when the jacks are plugged and unplugged. God this is confusing. It's like I'm deaf to any noise these speakers make.

I would venture to say that they are just broken. Try them on another machine. When problem solving hardware it is a good rule to follow that you move the hardware to another computer and see if the problem follows. If it does, then it the issue should be with the speakers, not a settings issue.

^ Yup sounds like they could be messed up. It's a shame, Logitech's Z series were really nice budget speakers, I still have my 2.1 set that I've been using for like 8 years.

Only thing I can suggest is make sure the main speaker is plugged into the amp/subwoofer tightly, and make sure you're plugging them into the right port on the PC.

Well, when I plug them and unplug them from the computer Realtek HD audio recognizes that I unplugged a device, but when I go to device manager there's no "Logitech Z-640." Selection.

I don't know. I might just suck it up with some cheap earbuds until after I'm back from vacation. Maybe then I'd go on a razer binge and get a new mousepad, a 7.1 soundcard and the Tiamat 7.1

Well, device manager wouldn't be able to detect the type and model of speakers....

The Realtek utility is basically just detecting that "something" is plugged into the audio port, it can't actually tell what is. Either way, in this case I would think there's an issue with the speakers. Obviously check the dumb stuff, make sure their plugged into the power outlett, make sure they are turned on, make sure the volume knob is turned up. Beyond that, there may not be much you can do.

Shame, really nice speakers for the price.
