Firefox Adblock / Adblock Plus: Click the adblock icon at the top right and press "Disable on teamliquid.net". If you don't see the adblock icon in your toolbar, you can press Ctrl+Shift+O to bring up adblock options, then go Options / View in toolbar. + Show Spoiler [Image] +
Opera: (using the built-in adblock, thanks CrudeClown) Right-Click on an empty area on the TL-page; "Click Edit Site Preferences"; Select the "Content" tab; Uncheck "Enable content blocking". This will only affect the TL website. + Show Spoiler [Image] +
Firefox NoScript: After the page loads, click the NoScript icon and press "Allow teamliquid.net". Unfortunately NoScript does not provide a way to whitelist a site and have the extension stop filtering that site, so after each new page load, if you see the NoScript icon indicate that scripts have been blocked, click the NoScript icon and press "Allow all this page". Note that the NoScript allow list is global so by unblocking ad network scripts on TL they will also be unblocked for other sites. This is unfortunately the only way the extension works. Also NoScript can still block some ads even when it is completely set to allow all scripts. The only way to allow ads is to remove or disable the plugin.
All Browsers: If you have privacy / security software or settings that are set to hide or mask the HTTP Referrer header, then some ads may not display.
If this didn't work you might have other things blocking ads such as script blockers, 3rd party programs, non-adblock ad blocking programs, hosts files, broken / old versions of adblock that don't whitelist properly or any number of possible issues.

For some reason some people say they don't have an Adblock icon under Chrome. To manually whitelist TeamLiquid for Adblock, you go to Options -> Extensions -> Adblock Options -> Manually edit your filters, click edit, and insert this line:
@@http://www.teamliquid.net$document Best to use the icon to do it automatically though, it keeps a small typo from breaking your filter list.

I ended up having to do it this way. Ads only loaded half the time when I used the one click method R1CH has for FF adblock in the OP. I don't have any entries other than my 127.0.0.1 in my hosts file either.

Oki doki, thanks =)
I would love to support TL, but unfortunately I don't know of any other preferential alternative to hosts file adblock; I desire that level of control over what does/doesn't load and display.
I do get ads when I use TL on my phone though (which is quite often), and I'm sure this recent attention to adblocking on TL has caused more than a few people to turn off their adblockers for TL, and for a good cause too. Many thanks to TL for the role they fulfil! Support esports and don't hurt the elephant guys!

Lol that was sneaky. Changed the ad layout and for some reason now my adblock isn't blocking the TL banner and it links to this page now. Hi R1CH I like you

You can use ABE in NoScript to whitelist certain scripts only if they come from teamliquid. I found some examples in this article.
This is what I tried for teamliquid.net:
Site .googlesyndication.com Accept from .teamliquid.net Deny
Now most ads show up, even those from doubleclick.net; adserver01 and so on, although these domains are still blocked by NoScript.

Maybe you could look into this and tell us which sites are necessary for ads and which aren't. Do google-analytics and quantserve have an influence on the ad revenue or are they just for tracking?
|
I did what you suggested and clicked "Disable on team liquid" and from what i understand the icon should turn green on TL and should no longer block adds. However for me the icon has turned gray and the Ad's are still blocked. Does anyone else have a similar problem? Because I would like to disable addblock for one other site aswell

I don't even have adblock, and I still get the Elly banner sometimes... usually when I have multiple tabs open, but sometimes even if I only have 1 tab open. I'm on chrome btw.

This doesn't work for me. Would like more details since this is the exactly the problem I have -- I'd like to enable ads for TL, but if it means enabling them for all of the internet, you can forget it. This seems like a perfect workaround though.

You need to add googlesyndication.com to the global whitelist first, then enable ABE. It will look like you enabled it for all sites but I don't get ads on other sites that use googlesyndication.com.

I didn't allow doubleclick, since after I whitelisted googlesyndication ads from doubleclick showed up on teamliquid. As for the "tutorial":
1. reset NoScript (optional if the thought of re-enabling all you favourite sites pisses you off) 2. go to teamliquid.net & whitelist it 3. now googlesyndication.com shows up (among others); whitelist that too. 4. go to NoScript options / Advanced / ABE 5. choose USER under rulesets 6. add the following lines
Site .googlesyndication.com Accept from .teamliquid.net Deny
That should be it. Like I said I'm not sure what the other scripts do and which ones are necessary for the ads on TL so I'm waiting for someone to explain what they do. If its necessary to unblock other sites just whitelist them and add them in ABE behind ".googlesyndication.com".
edit: I saw the sad elephant again and another site showed up in noscript called criteo.com. I whitelisted it, added it to ABE and the ads showed up again?!

Honestly it comes down to what feels good to you. Pro SC2BW players used Ball mouses for along overdue time cause they liked how they felt.

Hello fellow TLers! Anyone else on MAC here that could help figure this out. I THINK I have some sort of addblock running because I don't see any adds on TL When we see the little elephant crying it tells you that you have some addblock running, right? :S

I have turned off ad block to support you, but the ads are so horrible that I have turned it on again.
I get the the following ads:
Russian Girls, Asia Girls, Dating... Sorry I'm to old for such ads. I would like to support you, but only when I get ads that don't look like a porn page...
I will try it again in two weeks, hopefuly you will change something

Don't really wanna see that elephant at all so I unblocked it, we all win now.

For Chrome, i don't have adblock or anything, but it is still showing the Elephant where the Ads should be..

For some reason on Chrome I don't have an icon for adblock plus, but I whitelisted the teamliquid.net domain from within the options. Elly still shows up every time though.

As far as I know. there is no way to make an exception or "whitelist" a website with the adblock extensions for Opera. I've tried various things with both AdBlock Opera and NoAds Advanced and nothing seem to work properly. Shit sucks, I have to manually turn off AdBlock for TL.net and streams.
The guide in OP does work if you aren't using any extensions though.

Ok I disabled my AdBlock for TL because I love the site, however right when I did my load times almost doubled.
Anyone think of anything else that I can do to have AdBlock disabled as well as have decent load times?
Using FireFox (latest version) w/ AdBlock (latest version)

Wow, what kind of computer do you got? You have to have some other issue (or very slow internet) if the loading times doubled. Does this happen on other sites if you disable adblock? What if you try another browser?

I have a pretty fast computer, I can run sc2 at high at a resolution of 1680x1050 and I have extremely fast internet. I think that it is just my web browser... I use Fire Fox at the moment and when I tried it with IE it seemed to work fine (as fine as IE can work )
The browser has been acting funny for awhile now, I think that it is probably the cause of the problem. Reformat time I guess.

Disabling add-ons, making sure you have latest flash, reinstall the program and such could help if it's only firefox. Reformat might be a bit of an overreaction but I reformat my old laptop several times a year so who am I to talk.

@Rich/OP
I saw this article a bit ago about using ABE to allow NoScript to keep it's default deny all behavior while allowing exceptions of a user's choice. I've used this to great effect for Arstechnica and a few other sites, but it's a bit technical. Perhaps it merits a write up customized to TL's ad serving host on the OP?
http://arstechnica.com/business/guides/2010/03/safely-whitelist-your-favorite-sites-and-opt-out-of-tracking.ars
Edit: This will also cause a notification box to pop up when ABE when ABE's filters block something, such as Doubleclick ads on non-Arstechnica domains using the above link as an example. You can disable this by going to NoScript > Options > Notifications > Uncheck the ABE box.
Hopefully this helps :D

I really don't like advertisments (they are some of the worst things of our modern times in my opionion and the world would be way better without them. they are essentially manipulating peoples brains through methods of psychology convincing them of reacting against what logic would dictate.). I've disabled mine for TL but still it's just the elephant showing up for me. Is there a way to solve that? I'm using ABP for firefox 8.0.
Also, can I disable ABP for streams somehow?

I wont disable AdBlock for streams until they fix the issues like resetting the ads' volume everytime, which means my ears get fucked everytime an ad comes up. As for the homepage, I got it disabled already.
|
sad, all the best to everyone involved bad time of year for this stuff...
edit... lol wrong thread.

Can TL provide a JS/Flash free whitelist, or does that defeat the revenue?
I work with several screen and simultaneously with tens of active windows. NoScript is not a way to block advertising for me, but I block off-site scripting and play only whitelisted flash to reduce lag coming from the browser.
|
Updated with some extra notes. Based on testing, it seems NoScript is pretty terrible and even when set to allow all scripts it still causes ads to be blocked. Also if you have privacy settings set to block the HTTP Referrer header, some ads may not work also.
|
I noticed just today (since i woke up 4 hours ago as of this posting) all TL adds are blocked even with my regular temporary noscript allowing i do every time i go to TL. Not sure what the go is here.
edit: to clarify, this is brand new behaviour, ads were showing up fine up until today
That stream volume thing is really annoying too. It's only Own3d, and if its adds that makes even less sense since i never see adds on own3d streams anyway (i'm assuming its region based).

Im using FF, but theres no adblock option i can see and ctrl-shift-O just sends me to users/public/public videos/sample videos
EDIT: what region are ads generally for? i am from NZ, so could it be there arent many ads for NZ?

Not getting ads on stream is normal for some regions where no ads are sold, or if you watch a lot of streams you may reach the cap on ads shown per day.
|
I barely ever watch streams, come to think of it i do get some ads on owned.tv
maybe just twitch.tv doesnt have NZ ads.

Both don't work really well, because Google Chrome does not let them block adds in videos, because youtube is a google company. Besides that, Adblock plus works relatively well. If you want a fully working addblock get adblock plus for firefox. You can then disable it, for sites you still want to support by getting adds.

You should be at least a tiny little bit selective about the adds you allow. I am getting some stupid P2Win game commercial (Germany) that will fucking deafen me when I'm watching a stream.

We don't have any control over what ads appear on streams as they are not our ads.

So I've noticed that sometimes, intermittently, I'll see elly instead of ads, despite having adblock turned off for TL. All I've done to turn adblock off is click "disable for this site" and up until recently it was working fine. Is there another step I should be taking here? I've noticed this usually happens during slow internet times for me, so it might be related to that:

Meh, you guys are the only website I would do this for
|
I turned off adblock and get tons of commercials on streams. I don't mind one or two in between games, happy to sit through them and support the players, but the pure amount of ads... Whenever I open or refresh a stream, I get an ad, even when it's during a game. Sometimes, for no particular reason, I get 2-3 ads instead of one when opening/refreshing a stream. As I said I have no problem with the ads/banners/whatever on TL or streams, but when I open them on own3d or twitch I don't get this many ads, none when opening a stream...
|
Also, if you are using Ghostery extension for firefox, then you need to whitelist this domain regardles of whether adblock is disabled for the domain.
|
I've tried to whitelist TL.net many times but with no success... Today I disabled adblock completely and I still get the "Don't hurt the elephant" banner. Any ideas why?
Edit: got a banner on the main page today but not it's the elephant again.

I have the exact same thing. I'm using Chrome and the AdBlock extension. I have www.teamliquid.net whitelisted and the icon is green with a thumbs-up instead of red with the universal / western handsign for stop. Yet I'm still confronted with the crying elephant. Disabling Adblock and then restarting pc has the same result.
I'm having haunting nightmares because of this. It starts with a long, dimly lighted hallway. Then, the crying elephant appears out of nowhere, just sitting there - alone, crying, while staring me straight in the eye. After that, one programer after another appears at the end of hallway, walking towards me while saying what a terrible person I am. The image of White-Ra telling me 'that you kills esports by blocksing the ads' has completely destroyed my self-image. The nightmare ends with Sheth and InControl walking towards me, hand in hand, both wearing a light blue child's dresses while singing a lullaby with spine chilling lyrics. They stop right in front of me, after which Sheth pulls out a pair of pliers and InControl threateningly reveals a blowtorch. They then state their intention to torture me to death. At this moment I wake up, covered in sweat, tears and tomato soup.
I have stopped eating, washing - caring about life in general - because of these nightmares. Can anybody save me?!

I still get Elly showing up on mine at that top 1/5 times with adblock disabled; I doubt it's something we can help. I always always always get an ad in the bottom right though. I also get Elly periodically on other computers running IE without any form of adblock. Elly making me sad for something I can't help

The elephant is so cute!!!!

I would rather pay a fixed amount each month like 1/3/5/10 bucks voluntarily, than watch effing disgusting, distracting poker/casino/whatever else imagery
Please introduce a donate button instead of playing with my feelings and displaying sad elephants

If you want to support TL, in addition to viewing ads as normal, you can buy stuff from the store. (link)
|
:O I dint even realise there were ads on TL till I saw this thread ! And yes I dont have ad block.
|
Just a fyi to anyone, the disconnect.me chrome extension also blocks ads on TL. Edit: Firefox has a "do not track" feature as well built into it that has to be enabled manually. I'll confirm that this doesn't block ads on TL.
|
I already bought some stuff from the store, and it's cool, and I'm happy I supported that way. But really, please consider a subscription option to TL.net, I'd be happy to pay instead of having something shoved down my throat. Probably more than you'd get from me watching those ads.
Did you ever do a poll too see how many people would like to see it that way? Rhetorical question, suggestion even.

To manually whitelist TeamLiquid for Adblock, you go to Options -> Extensions -> Adblock Options -> Manually edit your filters, click edit, and insert this line: Best to use the icon to do it automatically though, it keeps a small typo from breaking your filter list.
It didn't work for me in Chrome, but thanks to you I finally did it :D Thanks for the advice!
TL is the only site I happily disable my abp for

Pff I just blocked the elephant, too. Trollface
...Nah, I'm kidding, I disabled it. <3 TL

I disabled adblocker on TL. <3<3 Also gonna buy D3 from TL store!

oh, why didn't I think of that! I've blocked the elephant and I've got what I needed I'll check in 6 month or so if anyone should come to the conclusion that a minimal effort like subscriptions is worthwhile cheers!

Team liquid can make some thing that block the access to the site if add block is on.
|
Your elephant need not be tortured... however I shall not whitelist sites with: audible-, flashing-, or moving ads. Additionally I block ALL third party tracking, and block all google ads. Consider hosting your ads locally and using static images and I'll whitelist this site.
Otherwise your elephant will be dancing on the hot plate of AdBlock Lite (a fork of AdBlock Plus as Wladimir destroyed credibility of AdBlock Plus with "allow ads" by default. If he set the "feature" to DISABLED by default and prompted for informed user consent to manually enable he could begin restoring that credibility), and/or Karma Blocker

I get ads on streams, but occasionally I will see the streamer hit the "run add" button and I won't get one. I also see the Disneyland ad on my right as I type this, but I want to make sure I don't have ad blocker for TL and streams linked through TL. I'm using chrome and can't seem to find that red ad-blocker sign next to the wrench -__- here's screenshot: + Show Spoiler + Making sure ^_^
|
seriously, why do i have to take the long way to donate to TL with buying stuff i maybe dont need or watching ads (brainwash). no. just gimme an option to donate directly without wasting half of the money to useless shit (mostly ads).
|
Since there seems to be a demand for supporting TL without watching adds, why not use flattr?

I've installed disconnect.me on firefox, it appears to be doing its job without blocking ads here. So to everyone, firefox is probably a better choice over chrome considering googles privacy concerns lately.

I never blocked adds before, but lately twitch commercials................................ are annoying me to death!!
I usually watch streams muted while playing games myself or watch multiple streams while only listening to one. However, every time a commercial comes it overrides the muted sound and you'll still hear it. Its also impossible to mute if after..... so yeh good job twitch... i'll just block them from now on.
I want to whitelist TL, but if i do, it'll still run the commercials if i watch a stream through TL. Is there a way around this? Or should i just watch the streams directly on twitch and not through TL?

I'm done with russian brides, thai brides and all the other kinds of fucking brides that I'm supposed to have. AdBlock reluctantly enabled only because of this. Figured I'd let you guys know if it's something you'd consider changing.
|
I have no idea why you can't just ignore the ads. Nobody is forcing you to get married.
|
I'm not sure how I got to this thread actually, but yes definitely learn to make adblock exceptions for your favorite sites and favorite streams. Or baby "insert God name here" will spawn maggots in your scrotum.

What if i had a traumatic experience with elephants and I wanted to hurt them? do I turn ON the adblocker then?

If you did that then you'd constantly be seeing an elephant. If I were you I'd turn the adblocker OFF so you don't have to see elephant all the time.

woah, totally posted in the wrong thread. How do I delete this.
|
I don't care about making the goddam elephant cry.
jokes.

Alright, I've recently started to use Chrome more regularly. With Firefox I was able to go through a list of filters and found the one that was for the banner on top of Team Liquid and disabled just that one.
Wonder if there's any way to do it with Chrome, because currently, I'm just adblocking everything on TL.
Let me be clear here though, don't even try and get me to whitelist Team Liquid. Not gonna happen, especially with streams. But I will try and disable the one banner on top.
|
I've disabled adblock on TL but when I installed the "collusion" addon that shows sites that are tracking you I was unpleasantly surprised to find out that there is a really big number of various sites that are tracking me through TL (I even disabled adblock completely and visited other sites and TL is still the worst in that regard) so I am thinking of enabling adblock for TL again. My privacy is worth more to me than your ad revenue.
|
Almost every website tracks you. Your privacy is never safe on the internet, it's not a huge deal as long as you don't key in your credit card number into an insecure website.
|
Hmm... I have NoScript and AdBlock disabled and I still get the "Don't hurt the elephant" thingie
|
Great documentary so far, cant wait for the posters and everything, want that poster so bad T_T

I don't even use adblock whatsoever and also got it. That was weird.
|
edit:derp posted in wrong thread
|
I realized that Noscript has been acting up for some ads. Solution: refresh page twice to get 2 ads instead. i actually try to get ads, that's how much i'm esport

dear TL
i just turned off my adblock for this site to help it out a bit. however, the first ad i got, was an ad for a german neo nazi clothing company named Thor Steinar http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thor_Steinar.
now i dont think tl is using this on purpose but i ask tl to do everything, that there are no more thor steinar ads for anyone in the future. when i wanna help out tl, i certainly dont want to help out the german neo-nazi scene indirectly.

They need the add information to do anything about it.

i just tried everything to deactivate that damn addblock the Tl website but it still blames me for hurting the elephant :'(
i'm using opera in addition with the AdBlock Plugin (that does for unknown reason tell me i can not disable it for selected sites even though it has a menuepoint that says it can) and Opera's buil-in contentblocker is disabled. any suggestions anyone? (no i can not disable the adblockplugin entirely)
|
Already did it since a long time, however, I've still sometimes the elephant banner appearing even if it's off, straaaaange :D
|
|
Chrome and Safari block it for me all the time. Safari on phone. . . sometimes the phone will show ads. The top ad for Chrome never shows but side ads do.
|
Disabled Adblock, but still seeing the elephant.
|
Thanks for the quick and easy guide to disable Adblock for Google Chrome. Happy to do this for any site with non-intrusive ads.
|
Just wondering for those of us who use hosts files to block ad sites at work or at home but wouldn't mind editing the file to let the tl.net ads through, what service do you guys use so i know which ip's to unblock, is it just google ads?
