(this isnt so much a problem just an annoyance) Why when I try and pay on card does it insist I make a paypal account? I can pay on card when my region is set to US but when I change it to UK (my location) it won't allow me to pay without an account. I just want to buy 2 shirts and pay on card.. why is it so hard? Thanks, as far as I know z87 its the only 1150 chipset that can be set up to work with OSX without much fuss. Not to mention the fantastic value for the price .

I'll be getting an 500Gb Samsung 840 EVO (not pro) for my laptop as an upgrade. Question: I want to dual boot Linux and Windows, if I partition the drive something like 50Gb -Windows system 400Gb - shared data drive (this is where all downloads, programs, etc go) 50Gb - Linux system will it deteriorate faster? I torrent a lot of sh*t. If so, I'm thinking of running my Linux from Windows on a virtual machine, or the other way around if performacne would allow it. I'm interested in any other solution, I only need windows for Starcraft and CS:GO. (I never really tried getting them running in wine though, maybe that would be the simplest solution of all )

I don't know if your laptop has space for more hdd-s but if you torrent or move a lot of data constantly it is going to deteroirate faster anyways, no matter how you partition it. Why not get a 256 or 128gb ssd for the os-s and the games/ apps and have an external hdd for the downloads? You'd be off a lot cheaper too.

On this topic... can someone recommend a quieter (than stock) hs/fan for the 1150? (I'd wouldn't mind something that cools better too, and price is a factor.) Thanks.
EDIT: preferably low(er) profile (under 140mm tall)

Only 1 slot for SSD/HDD, so I need a big one. I currently use 200Gb of space, and that's after a major cleanup.... I dislike the idea of using a separate drive for all my data.
I know that the common internet gossip is that torrenting is a bad idea on an SSD in general, but every evidence and test result simply points to the direction that with domestic usage (so no webserver stuff) you just won't be able to ware out your drives for tens of years. Especially bigger ones, 200Gb and over. Am I wrong in believing that a 500Gb SSD with max 400Gb of stuff on it would last me at least 20 years with 10Gb/day of writing? And that's like only 1/4 of what Samsung claims.
Any info on the partitioning?

Oh, I thought the partitioning was just for your own convenience. You know on an SSD, the actual blocks used are mapped all over the place, right? No matter how you partition, all the data is getting mixed together in terms of locations, especially as data needs to be erased and rewritten.
That's fine, anyhow. I wouldn't worry about the writes unless you're somehow burning through hundreds of writes a day of data and probably a lot more with the write amplification to the actual flash. If you're more paranoid, get something with normal 2-bits-per-cell MLC flash (read: not Samsung 840 or 840 EVO; pretty much anything else) and/or a longer warranty.
Actually, this isn't even cheaper really and may not have enough flash for you, but do you know about WD's Black^2 drive? 120 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD sharing a single 2.5" form factor. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236642
Also, you sure you don't have an open mSATA slot in the laptop?

Thank you! No, I wasn't sure about that, exactly the info I needed. I thought that maybe if you partition it somehow permanently allocates which cells are being used by which partition or something. Well that basically answers my questions regarding longevity.
I haven't heard of the WD Black drive. Cool, but it's not for me. I like the idea of lower power consumption ( = longer battery life) and zero moving components in a laptop. Since 500Gb is more than enough for me, it's really a no brainer to choose the Samsung. Plus I already have an extra 1TB drive, the one that I will take out, which will go in a case and I'll plug that into my router to have some network storage.
Sadly no mSATA, I'm 100% sure.
Do you know if this info is still relevant regarding partitioning?

From everything I've seen posted in various forums, that alignment stuff should still be relevant. The start offset of a partition should be a multiple of 1024. (EDIT: or 4096?)
EDIT: I just checked for my SSD. I have a 250GB SSD and I have Windows and Linux installed and another large partition. On Windows, the tool "msinfo32" can show the start offsets of the partitions on a disk. Everything just happened to be partitioned with the start offset divisible by 4096 without me doing anything special. I always simply used the Windows and Ubuntu installer's graphical tools and dragged on the graphical representations of the partitions with the mouse to resize stuff.

You still want the partitions aligned to the erase block size, though I wonder if people would be able to notice the difference in practice. Should be that up-to-date versions of the typical Linux partitioning utilities are aware of this and automatically do it correctly. I think. You might want to check more yourself or see if someone else knows.
edit: Samsung 840 it's 1536 KB. TLC NAND so multiple of 3. 840 EVO is probably the same.

So my internet keeps stuttering like every 1.5 minutes for like 10 seconds... happens with both wireless and wired connection, how fix/what's the problem?
Total noob with tech problems :D

Whenever I try to plug a 500GB USB 3.0 HDD into my Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro's USB3 slot, it doesn't work right -- Windows will stop reading and immediately read the HDD after any video or music file has been playing for less than a minute, or so. It's impossible to watch any media as a result.
However, when I connect it to the USB2 slot, it works fine in perpetuity. Also, oddly enough, it doesn't stop reading it at all when I'm transferring files; I transferred 24 gbs from the USB3.0 HDD to the SSD on the Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro without any problems. The only problem is playing a media file while it's connected to the USB3 port.
I've tried different cables but to no avail. Ive also tried it with 2 different USB3 flash drives and those didn't have any problem. So I'm thinking it's something about the port and using certain types of USb3 hdds maybe.
Edit: I'll look into doing that, thank you. Also, I just tried my friends much newer WD My Passport 1TB USB3 HDD and there haven't been any errors or drops. The USB3 HDD i have is a Toshiba one from like 1 and a half years ago
Edit Again: I tried looking for drivers but the only ones I could find were outdated or the official Lenovo ones but there weren't any updates: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/default.page?selector=expand I also asked in the Lenovo forums but I dont know if they'll reply.

I'm in the market for a new laptop for work. I'm using a tablet for just about all browsing / video / media work these days, so the laptop would be just for documents (wp / spreadsheets / powerpoint), light photo editing, and the odd email or flash enabled website requirement. Any suggestions? I was thinking a chromebook, but finding trustworthy reviews online are few and far between. A point in the right direction would be most welcome. Thanks.

Hey guys, big budget build for 780ti/4770k.
Any crazy overkill airflow cases out there? We're looking for a 240/280mm CLC or even a H320 (3*120mm) on the CPU (maybe in push/pull with something like sp120's) and for the GPU airflow to levitate the case.
Xigmatek Elysium which was a random case i could name would allow for 360mm rad top with 3x fans (6 supported?? unsure) and then something could be sorted out for GPU - between two front 120mm's, two bottom 140mm's (with psu at bottom), 200mm side and 140mm rear.
Any other suggestions? He is more concerned for awesomeness than cost effectiveness

Alright guys random problem. So i built a PC a while ago (thanks to TL) and finally installed the reccomended monitor app (Hwinfo) And my ram says its only 800mhz despite it being agskill capable of 1600mhz. Does anyone know how I can clock it to 1600mhz? Heres a screenshot of Gwinfo for my memory http://i.imgur.com/S5jA6df.jpg
Thanks

DDR = double data rate.
The effective data rate is advertised (1600, 800*2) but the actual clock speed is 800mhz
