Before you do that, try this software: http://www.resplendence.com/whocrashed/
You have to click somewhere and it'll read Windows logs about your latest BSOD and tell you something about which driver was the cause in the report it generates.

The white noise on the audio cable stays constant no matter what you do on the Windows volume control. This means, if you turn the Windows volume up, the white noise does not get louder. The volume control on your speakers or your headphone cable does not behave like that. If you turn the volume adjustment on the headphones down, you will dampen the white noise. So if you currently have 10 % volume in Windows and put that to 100 %, and then use the knob on your speakers to get the same volume as before, you will have reduced the white noise ten-fold and won't be able to hear it anymore.

What would the price difference be on a decent one if I were to make it myself compared to something like those? It's mostly that the configurations don't make sense for what you're wanting to do, so you'd be paying way extra for stuff you don't need. They're only say 10% or so over the cost of parts (for somebody like you or me buying single-unit quantities).

I don't know if I should return my graphics card or downgrade drivers. Still not sure whether it's software or hardware related.

At least in my laptop with similar problems, memtest didn't discover a problem till the second time I ran it, and even then, it was on the second cycle through. I still technically need to run it again with only the "suspected" stick, which was in the 18gb range, so hopefully it's just the ram in slot 3 ![]()

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna have to RMA it (it's 2.5 months old from ASUS).

Downclock your GPU, see if that 'fixes' the issue. If that doesn't, raise the voltage to the max (in the software, of course, which is limited so as to prevent you from raising it to anything substantial), downclock even, see if it reduces the artifacts at all. Basically if downclocking or overvolting reduces the artifacting, that's a sign of the GPU. You first need to see where exactly the issue is, artifacts is just a manifestation of instability, and instability can come from anything. Artifacting is generally the GPU but you can never 100% attach a particular manifestation of instability to a particular cause every time (although artifacting is pretty much always gpu...). If it's within 30 days you'd go with the seller, not manufacturer. Manufacturer is basically last resort (just generally resellers have only a 30 day return policy). Could also be the power supply. But one thing at a time. Belial suggested overvolting but that might not be covered in warranty etc. I can't see somebody voiding warranty because you underclocked a gpu though

You could try a different slot on your motherboard to see if it's perhaps the motherboard and graphics card having problems only in its current slot.

In any event, does ASUS have a convenient way to start an RMA online? It seems like you either fill out a help ticket for 'advice fixing the problem' with every detail about your hardware (down to serials on RAM) or you call them?

Aren't graphics cards always supposed to go in the primary slot first? They're also supposed to work, and you probably have a second slot that would not have significantly lower performance due to pcie bandwidth

I bought a new Mobo and CPU. My windows 7 on my hard drive is still running and functional. Some settings got changed, and the action center has no updates. It now tells me I need to install a "windows update software" in order to enable checking for automatic updates. I had bought an OEM windows 7 license. If I allow my windows to install this "windows update software", will it detect that I have a new machine and then cause problems, like not letting me run windows any longer, or continually have a warning that it's not genuine or start blocking programs? I'm not sure if my windows was "attached" to my mobo, or my hard drive.
