Let me preface this by saying that I tried the official SC2 tech support forum first. Their policy seems to be to ignore any thread entirely if they don't know how to fix the issue, so no Blizzard person ever responded.

Computer specs:
955 BE (no overclocking whatsoever)
GTX460 768mb
4gb (2x2gb) Mushkin DDR3 RAM
500gb 7200 RPM HDD
500W OCZ PSU
Windows 7 64 bit

I'm having a serious issue with SC2. Occasionally, without warning, the game will crash and bring up the following error:

ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xC0000005)
occurred at 0023:00CB7039. The memory at '0x00000000' could not be read.

Before I go into my own troubleshooting, I should point out that my computer is less than 3 months old and this problem has been happening from the beginning. My old computer, which was much less powerful, never had any crashing issues.

I naturally suspected that there was something wrong with my RAM, since defective RAM sticks aren't uncommon. Memtest86+ ran for 14 hours and found 0 errors. Some people claim that HCI Memtest is better at finding things, so I downloaded it, closed every program, and ran it. After 12 hours, it didn't find anything. I highly doubt the RAM sticks are defective if over 24 combined hours of testing can't find one fault. I took the RAM out and reseated both sticks, but the crashing continued.

After verifying that my RAM is probably good, I thought it might be an issue with the SC2 installation. Using the repair tool did not help, so I uninstalled and reinstalled, but to no avail. The issue isn't heat-related, as I always run CPUID HWMonitor, and the CPU cores and GPU max out at 52C and 45C respectively in SC2. I have the exe set to run as administrator. The Nvidia drivers are up to date, and I have tried reinstalling them. The RAM voltage is at 1.5V.

I really don't know what else to do here. The problem has forced me into an SC2 hiatus, as it ruins my ability to ladder. I tried to ladder last night and crashed in my third game (~20 min after starting the program). I've also had the error pop up in the lobby, with the game minimized, so it's not dependent on actually being in a match. The error usually says that the memory could not be "read" but I've also seen "written" and "executed."

I can provide any further info upon request. Thanks in advance for any assistance with this frustrating matter.

Do you have any other video cards lieing around?

Maybe its the VRAM on your GTX 460 (explaining the cannot read write, ex)

At this point anything seems like it is worth a shot. It s worth trying to narrow down if it is a hardware issue.

last thing id say is reformat =/

Im sorry to hear this, it must be very frustrating for you.

Unfortunately I don't have any other video cards. This is my first desktop since the early 2000s.

Well-written, detailed opening post.

I don't agree that it's GPU related, especially since it crashes at idle and temperatures are not a problem. Even then, i think the nVidia driver would have logged something That said, have you gone through your event viewer logs? See if there are any other error messages near or at the same time as your system crashes.

Is CnQ enabled btw?

CnQ is set to auto in the BIOS.

As for the event viewer, those are uncharted waters for me, but I'll have a look anyway. Note that it's not actually a system crash. SC2 crashes and I just end up on my desktop with the SC2 error log.

Does this happen with any other game or program? Or is it only with SC2?

SC2 is the only PC game I play (I bought the comp to handle D3 in the future, so it's a little overkill for SC2). Firefox's plugin-container.exe crashes sometimes, but I don't really use any other memory-intensive programs.

As much as I appreciate the reply, the guy in the bnet forum thread is talking nonsense. A huge amount of people play SC2 with a multicore processor and 64 bit windows without any issue.

How about you try it without getting angry?

Who's angry? I think I was pretty nice, considering the guy didn't read the OP.

Given what you have done already:

-Make sure you have the latest chipset & video drivers (yes I read the op), use driver cleaning software if you need to install different ones.

-Run windows update.

-Try disabling your anti-virus and see if it still happens.

-Flash your BIOS with the latest version.

-Try a different video card? This is a stretch, but who knows.

If that doesn't do it I would just re-format & use windows backup & recovery to transfer all of your libraries back onto the new installation via removable drive.

I think this has something to do with windows data execution prevention (DEP). It's basically the OS telling SC2 that it isn't supposed to be using that memory.

run some 3dmark benchmarks/other games/Prime95, if it crash again try downclockin the processor then try down clockin the video card. Good start will be to reset bios to default and look for new bios for ur mobo. Something is faulty, and i doubt it's Starcraft

Who said he didnt?

the tone of your post made you come off as dont even want to try to fix the problem.

He showed you that thread because it has the same error.

Did you read what he linked too?

Sounds like you havnt tried that yet. SO TRY IT, OR DONT EVEN BOTHER FIXING THE PROBLEM.

Lol the two posters clearly didn't bother to read city's first post. If they did, they would have realized that city42 has already exhausted the official BNet resources and has already tried repairing/reinstalling.

City42 has every right to be angry - they're wasting his time talking about things he has already tried. The one link just involves changing affinity settings. That is clearly not a solution.

Umm... well he never stated that "i have tried this specific fix"

Its possible he ONLY read the official troubleshooting thread. He also said he posted a thread, but nothing about anything hes tried from the site.

Anyways, gl.

I like how you find it appropriate to argue about arguing. Stay classy, Marcus.

When attempting to reinstall, you might try deleting your temp files. Something in there might be fucking up with your error, which, I think, is normally caused by corrupted files. Could be wrong.

edit: actually apparently i have no idea what i'm talking about. herp derp nevermind

Here's what you do. (...And no, you don't need to update bios, it's not your video card, it's not the anti-virus, it has nothing to do with temporary files)
1. Install latest video drivers, or, better yet, first remove older ones and then install the latest version
2. Remove one of the RAM sticks, run SC2 with one, see if it crashes, if it does/doesn't, use another one.

If #1-#2 prove ineffective, go into Control Panel - Administrative - Event viewer, (System and Software sections), copy the ones that are registered to the time of BSOD (kernel error) and the ones just prior to that.

You can also try running "BIOS Safe Mode" (do not confuse with Windows Safe Mode).

A good way to solve many of those problems is getting a tool called "game booster". basicly its a freeware program that kills unessesary memory eating aplications and frees it for games.

The reason i sugest this is becouse many nowday normally used programs (skype, messenger, etc) can create conflicts with other aplications, especially games.

I used it normally to keep diablo2 from crashing with same "access violation" error.

Another thing i suggest is, in case you have your Ram in more than 1 module, to swamp their places.
Its the typical "why should this work" thingy, but considering u get 0x00000000, it might help.

How often does this occur?
Around what time after launch does this occur (only after 20 minutes or so)?
Post full crash .txt please :3

Did you try running with admin or compatibility mode? (somehow, this works for me).

Let me know!

Correction, no, it's your ram or bios settings (CPU/Ram Voltage, OC etc), run Bios Safe Mode.

This is what kills you.

I had a similar situation (but long before sc2 came out). Although, this error can really be anything, in my case it was the following:
1) first, it were bad memory sticks, but you tryed it.
2) then, it was bad processor socket - after i popped out my CPU i saw, that some socket legs were folded too much. This was confirmed by techsupport and they replaced my MB.

Hope it helps.

[edit]
It'll be good, if you state in the OP, whether the same error happens in other resource-heavy programs. Try some other modern 3-d game. If it does, it's 100% a hardware problem, and you shouldn't be mad at blizzard

That's weird because I'm not OCing. In fact, my Gigabyte motherboard raised the voltage of the 955 BE to 1.4V out of the box, and I moved it down to the stock 1.35V. The RAM is still at its default 1.5V.

Around what time after launch does this occur (only after 20 minutes or so)?
Post full crash .txt please :3

Did you try running with admin or compatibility mode? (somehow, this works for me).

Let me know!

It varies. Sometimes it goes hours without anything, and sometimes my first game of the day gets ruined by the crash.

If your MB has Safe Mode setting, run it, if not - reset it to default and try again. Also, you haven't replied whether you tried running the game on one RAM stick.

I just took out one stick, and I'll give it a try now.

Try each individual stick until you run into the shitty one.
That's my guess. Might be tedious, but will be worth it.

Use to have the same trouble and the cause was overclocking my video card. I was suspecting a damaged ram but yeah...

dont think im a fool for asking this, but what anti virus have you got loaded?

I got the same error message when avasts exeptions list didnt include sc2.

Giving sc2 permissions fixed it right up

I'm testing the individual sticks of RAM now. Whenever I get it resolved, I'll write an update here.

I've played a good 25 games since Monday with no crashing, so I think this RAM stick is fine. I'm now swapping it out for the other stick and I'll let you know how it goes.

Just to let you know I also have this problem and it is definitively a RAM based problem, as I only got this crash after I upgraded my RAM. Annoyingly, this RAM is totally compatible with my motherboard so I'm tinkering around with BIOS settings to try and get it working. Will let you know if I get it working with the upgraded memory in (it works perfectly fine if I just use my old memory)

That does it than, it was the ram stick.

Maybe not. If the other stick works too, it could be an issue with the RAM slot or some sort of driver problem with 4gb RAM.

Please do tell how the testing goes.

I have the same issue, but two 100% working Kingston RAMs.
Will post my error message the next time I get it.

city42 can we assume that your RAM was indeed the problem?

My friend has the same error on his Win7 x64, he tried loads of stuff and nothing really worked.
I am posting it as strange thing happened to me yesterday. Mind u, I played SC2 somewhat around 6 months without a SINGLE incident/crash. Now, after latest patch, I had already two crashes...

I have win7 x64 as well, never any problems in any other games (eg. Civ V).

Below, my error report if someone is interested.

Try performing a clean boot of Windows and see if it corrects the problem:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

If this does make the problem go away, the problem is that you have a compatibility issue with StarCraft 2 and some other program running on your computer.
It takes an idiot to do cool things.

I know you stated you haven't overclocked, but this error is usually associated with CPU/memory instability. Make sure your 955BE doesn't have unlocked cores or increased multiplier. Also make sure your RAM is running at correct timings. You could try underclocking your cpu and memory. You could also try increasing the voltage for both, that's solved the problem for people before.

To my bewilderment, the problem appears to be one of the RAM sticks. Apparently the memory tests need to be run for days on end to be truly accurate. I have some more testing to do, and I'll post again when I'm 100% certain.

Is CnQ enabled btw?

disagree. this game can operate at full blast in MENUS. Does it have the error in other games would be my question.
Do it, and let the Anglish see ya do it.

You might want to read his first post again.
He minimized the game. When you do that, the GPU load goes back to 0. Try it - CPU and GPU loads will drop back to desktop-level activity (which is basically 0-5%). The GPU vcore will drop appropriately from 3D back to 2D.

I'm actually getting this problem as well, but with an ATI card.

sooo heres my story:
i bought a pc so icould play sc2 hardcore,a good pc.so installed sc2 and got these same errors constantly (around 200 of them).they will come in different patterns so i tried a couple of things - ran memtest and it told me i have a faulty ram,so i contacted the manufacturer and they fixed it.i came back home with my repaired pc and the first thing that happened was that sc2 crashed again.soooo i tried looking for other solutions.blizzard forums didnt help me a bit,i tried a lot of things, reinstalled windows a couple of times, tried different windows 7 versions and so on and so on.nothing worked.so i went to the manifacturer and told them there was still a problem, but they couldnt find any.they gave me the advice to reinstall windows once again and install only drivers and sc2 in the start.i did it and for some time it gave results i didnt have any crashes, but two days ago i got 2 consequtive crashes and im pretty much left without a hope :S

Sorry for the late response.

The problem was indeed one of the RAM sticks. I've been running with just the good stick and haven't experienced any crash/error (SC2 or otherwise). The other stick gave me SC2 crashes and a windows BSOD when put in by itself. I hope Mushkin's RMA service is better than their product.

To anyone else experiencing this issue: Do not trust any memtest results unless you've run it for several days. If you have multiple RAM sticks I definitely recommend trying them one at a time. SC2 runs great on low settings with 2GB so it doesn't hinder my game at all.

Hang on - so how long exactly did it take for memtest86+ to read errors from your single bad stick?

Or maybe memtest just doesn't work sometimes?
I once had a similar problem to yours... memtest showed no problems but in hindsight, memory was most likely the problem.

I never ran memtest again on it, but I came to the conclusion after:

-The first stick has been completely stable for over a week and ~100 ladder games without a single crash or error.
-The second stick gave me 3 SC2 ACCESS_VIOLATION crashes and a windows BSOD in a single day.

They were both using the same memory slot so that isn't the issue. My point was that contrary to the info I found on most sites through googling, 14 hours of memtest86+ really isn't sufficient for finding some problems. Who knows, maybe it never would have found whatever issue this RAM stick has.

Well those 14 hours were with both sticks inserted correct? So that's why I'm curious to see if Memtest86+ would have still missed if it was tested individually - and how long it would take (days even) to detect errors on the bad stick.

That said, the real-world test (just play on it) saves time since you aren't just watching the test run. But yeah, I'm curious to see the result if it were tested individually and if it really is a duration issue and if it was complicated by testing it together with the good stick of RAM.

Yeah that's three if's lol.

I'll put in the bad stick tonight and run memtest overnight to see if it finds something.

I had the same problem for a while. Specific maps, like Lost Temple, Shakuras Plateau, and anything campaign blue screened me. I fixed it by going from windows XP to Vista
In theory, practice and theory are the same. In practice, they are not

Hello all! I just had the same problem with my new system. I know it was GPU issue. I have ASUS GTX 570 card. This is what saved the day for me
1. go to "NVIDIA Control Panel"
2. under "3D settings" go to "Manage 3D Settings"
3. use the one called: "Let the 3D application decide"

after all this steps the game is working just fine.
Thank you and good luck

Maybe this will help.
Had the same problem with my specs:

I was having the same issue. A week or so after continuously having the problem, I noticed a graphics patch in Windows Update. However, I do keep my drivers up to date from Geforce.com but this patch I guess brought it up to speed even more? I used to be at a January 2011 update and it took me to February. Keeping in mind that the latest patch I had installed was from March 2011 from Geforce. After that, so far, no more ACCESS_VIOLATIONs. Also, new patch came out this week from geforce for Nvidia Updates, which may help as well! I didn't bother checking to see if RAM was in issue but if I come across the error again, I'll look into it!

I had this problem with my first install of SC2. The game would just crash every time just before the 3D cut-scene.

None of the advice I found online solved the issue.

After a lot of trial and error, one thing finally worked for me.
I simply used the NVidia Control Panel -> Manage 3D Settings to customize "starcraft ii.exe" to minimum (safest) settings. The game launched the mission successfully! Then I ramped up the settings for "starcraft ii.exe" in the Nvidia Control Panel back to my custom values (pretty much maxed out) and the game continued working without a hitch!
Hope this helps someone.
