But it's also pretty sad that it has resulted in all the exciting changes to Protoss seemingly being scrapped. The news of the first PTR patch and the changes to Protoss was about as exciting as a new expansion. I hope after these reverts go live we can have a PTR that is actually Blizzard playing around with how Protoss works in sc2 and trying to figure out a way to make that viable and fun... and maybe then looking at Terran and Zerg too...

Hard to hear all the people wishing that the game stays the same forever and complaining about having new things. Sorry y'all had to learn new builds for no reason, sounds agonizing (am I crazy for thinking that coming up with new strategies and builds is fun?) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. I'm firmly convinced that there is a pretty sizeable population of StarCraft players who want to just be told what to do and click buttons as much as possible and make things die and explode. Not that this is bad by any means, or somehow inferior (there are pros who get builds from other pros). It's just that they enjoy a different aspect of the game, that loud clickety-clackety on their keyboard, the feeling of pulling off micro tricks or dominating their opponent in an engagement, etc.

I would estimate most of the player base is millennials, with more kids than kidney stones. Blame Blizzard more than the players, they clearly did not have the skills nor recources to see through such massive changes landed safely. Even if they did, it would take 1-2 years, and most players would have left to never return.

the 12 worker start and lotv design over the years created a very very stale game. the builds are one-dimensional, and the overall game is extremely low skill expression by comparison to a low-eco environment. my thoughts are: I don't really care, i'll always adapt and overcome without whining about balance or the state of the game, but if you want my take; it's bad. instead of reverting back to LoTV they should have reverted the game balanced back to when the game actually had a massively high player count, and to my knowledge that was shortly before they released the worker changes from 6 to 12. the obvious issue with this, is that the vast majority of starcrafts low-eco playerbase left the game when they changed the worker count from 6 to 12, and then left it in that state for over a decade, combined w/ the F2P model most of your dedicated player base started their career in a high eco setting, so radically changing the game back to a low eco environment probably isn't going to work, even though it is technically way better for the game.

I'm far from boomer and I'm doing ok with the new patch, I just don't like it. The game feels stale. In fact, I'd say the opposite is true - slow players would like the 8 workers patch as it makes the game SLOWER. You don't make sense. The 5.0.15 patch benefits high APM players more than 5.0.17 in my opinion and that suits me fine. I've also played protoss since BW, when I get used to its mechanics (gates in BW and warp-in in SC2), I don't want that to change randomly just because. If you like gateway protoss style, you can go back to Brood War.

The players aren't opposed to change, they are opposed to shit changes.

Well, it's not surprising if you look at the Patches changelog. Almost every Zerg combat unit got a direct power buff, either out of the box, or via an upgrade, whereas Protoss and Terran got a lot more niche stuff. But at even if the balance isn't great right now, Patches does iterate on a regular basis, whereas Blizzard just fucks off for months at a time with no communication, so...

Really, the part that feels wild is that they could have skipped the economy changes and this would have been a genuinely interesting patch. I definitely disagree with some aspects (e.g. Ghosts), but it was the economy changes that ruined it completely. Setting aside the discussions of what might be ultimately better, the fact that (1) a flurry of changes had to be made to balance the cost of expanding and (2) the pro scene was thinning out like a tree in autumn shows that it was just a poorly thought out change. I'm happy they listened. I'm sad it had to come to this, and we weren't allowed to explore any of the other aspects of the patch independent of the economy stuff.

(I say this as a Protoss who initially thought they were insanely dumb.) I've been busy the last couple of weeks, so perhaps I missed the point where the meta decided it was inherently imbalanced, but it was interesting to see the development. I'm also a bit sad about the Muta reverts; those felt genuinely good and just bringing the units up to date. I feel sure they will explore most of these ideas in a more careful way in the future. SC2 was very close to perfectly balanced already, so every nerf needs a small buff somewhere else to not break a matchup. As for the reverts, Terrans very very unhappy with TvP last patch, lacking agressive options, and being forced to turtle. I hope they can fix that somehow.

some reverts make sense if they’re fixing stuff that clearly wasn’t working but too many changes at once can get messy fast)))
