Korean media outlet MoneyToday reports that Nexon has won the competition among Korean publishers to develop new content with Blizzard's StarCraft IP. Nexon is also reported to have won the rights to distribute a new Overwatch mobile game—which is said to be a MOBA genre game—in Korea and Japan.
NCSoft and Netmarble are reported to have also actively bid for the package of StarCraft IP + Overwatch mobile distribution rights. There are said to be no restrictions on genre or type of content to be created with the StarCraft IP.
The Korean publishers are said to have submitted various pitches regarding StarCraft IP such as a spinoff game, mods, and user generated content, but Nexon's specific pitches are unknown.

not related to esports but imagine if they make an RTS with the campaign being mengsk as a regressed character and becomes a good guy like a true korean webtoon.

I'm of two minds on this.
I don't mind the StarCraft IP being licensed if the game quality is good. But it's Nexon, and their track record for gacha elements in games isn't great. I'm very cautiously optimistic.
But if they do a StarCraft/Blue Archive crossover I might just have to barf up a lung....

I know this is the complete opposite of what Nexon does but it would be nice to have some SC themed board games, like a Betrayal game or Risk.

I've been thinking for a while that RTS devs have to spend thousands of hours building a game engine when the sc2 game engine really is all you need...
This IP licensing -- How likely is it that the SC2 game engine could be licensed out to other companies to make very high quality RTS games? Also, is this a possibility with Nexon?

Oof, thanks for posting this. Nexon is bad, bad news. Super janky, greedy history with maplestory, and a bad history of gacha games. Ugh. I'm honestly hesitant to believe this is even happening given the lack of suppor too sc2, but if it does, then godspeed.

If they can NOT make a gacha game I will be reasonable lukewarm on this news. If they make gold, maybe its a redemption arc no one sees coming.

I don’t think it’s that important or impactful really, least for what I want.
If it’s super successful I’m still not sure it moves the needle on an SC3. Equally if it bombs I don’t think it inhibits it either.

Kind of bummed out that King isnt making the mobile game they are already a part of the company. A Starcraft candycrush would have been lit

Honestly they should treat StarCraft like any of the big franchises such as Star Wars or Marvel. But keep the budgets mid, and just crank out a couple or three fantastic games completely separate in genre, tone or whatever they want.
- First person SCV offworld mining game, Mass Effect style romance on a remote outpost. Farther the player goes the more dangerous but better minerals and abandoned Refineries. Maybe no actual Zerg or Protoss but remnants, local dangerous wildlife and magma or even ice volcanoes as danger as well.
- Star Fox style single player game using an assortment of Wraith's, Ravens, Vikings
- Traditional RTS StarCraft but only multiplayer or only campaigns. Keep it robust but not too much feature creep.

ive been thinking. so we know nexon has licensing rights to develop starcraft, but it would still technically be produced by Blizzard right? I am picturing a scenario where whatever they are developing will get teased at Blizzcon 2026. I think it is incredibly likely. Blizz is returning to blizzcon after years they will wanna make a big impression and not leave anyone out to win back the hearts of their community. this is like microsofts first real blizzcon after having some time with the acquisition and they have a chance to show the company is in good hands now. They already spoke highly of starcraft in the past, saying they want to revitalize it, they wear starcraft shirts on stage, i think next blizzcon will have starcraft in it! the starcraft 3 copium train is alive and i will be its conductor. youre in good hands.

this is horrible news... I hope Jaeyun Cho doesn't take over this because just 2 days ago the whole Kartrider Drift title has been scrapped... Nexon has a long list of mistakes in their credits.

They probably started ditching other projects when they got overwatch and StarCraft rights. This is a big loot situation. This could change their life.

I love the optimism but I honestly don't think they have the talent anymore. I think thats why Blizzard bled ALL their RTS talent they had acquired through the late 2010s. There wasn't a new RTS in production so they all left.
