I had switched to Terran for a while in 2012, but that finals and Squirtle's performance immediately made me switch back to Toss, the race i still play to this date. I would always root for him, and each of his victories felt deserved and like he outplayed the competition, and his losses seemed unfair, unlucky, or balance issued - thought patterns like these really only emerge once you're a hardcore fan of someone, i suppose :D That time of SC2 was the peak for me, the era before BL/INF took over, and Squirtle played a huge part in it. Somewhere in my heart, he will forever be my GOAT, even if his reign lasted for a month and a half.

Not always perfectly, which was part of his charm but he’s probably the guy who did the most to really lay the blueprints on how to play a more straight-up macro style with Protoss. When Rain was starting to make a few waves I recall him being asked who he was watching and taking from, and it was one name and it was HerO, and I think it shows. There’s a lot of HerO there just without the fragility. Sadly Rain didn’t stick around or I’d be pretty confident he’d be at the very least the Protoss GOAT. But hey it’s a ball the likes of Stats took and ran with. In the spirit of this new thread, who are the most overrated/underrated players we’ve seen?

1. Serral - I don't even know why, I just can't root against the guy 2. TY - The only player who consistently made TvT fun for me to watch! 3. herO - Fun as hell to watch, plus he's a real class act 4. Maxpax - Also fun to watch, love his distinct styles and brutal 1-gate fast expand defenses 5. Astrea - What can I say, he's sexy 6. Time/Oliveira - Loved watching him make runs in WCS, his style was just so aggro and relentless and the last year and a half since he came up a tier has been brilliant 7. Boss Toss - What isn't there to love? 8. Stats - Shield of Aiur, love how he and Showtime carried the defensive Toss flag for years 9. Die Mauer - I'm realizing I enjoy watching reactive Z and P and aggressive T 10. Bunny/Skillous/Trigger - It's a tie for 10th, I can't choose between them. I'll watch anything these guys play in

This is Oz slander! The WOAT is clearly BBoongBBoong. First, all-time terrible name, a name so clearly destined for mediocrity I can't even believe anyone allowed him to sign up to a tournament. Second, can you imagine someone paid BBoongBBoong to lose a match of professional Starcraft? I almost feel bad for the match-fixers, that's basically extortion. Then I remembered they were stupid enough to put their future in the hands of a guy who named himself ''Fart Sound''. Third, I mean just read those Liquipedia trivia: - Wore black tape over his nipples and ate pizza between games - Also displayed his enjoyment of eating during his appearance on GSL Off the Record, when challenged to eat a bowl of instant noodles during a match and win, he upped the ante and challenged himself (though unsuccessfully) to also eat another bowl of instant noodles and two rice seaweed rolls and drink a carton of chocolate milk and a glass of water.

I think Serral was stronger than Maru in 2018, but it's true that Maru's achievements were stronger, especially if we include the 4th GSL. It's kind of unfair because serral couldn't have done it better than he did, but GSLs are more impressive, especially when you don't have to face Serral in WCS because your name is serral. This is assuming the game is balanced, if it weren't then Maru was also stronger. The reason World championships are worth more than gsl is because it represents having beaten all the world has to offer. It's true that 1 qualifier from 5 different regions lead to a weaker lineup than 5 korean qualifiers. But im one of these tournaments you're the best in the world, and in the other you're the best in korea.

Oz was incredible. A build genius You know how pretentious, annoying people will stick on the worst record you’ve ever heard and say ‘well, they’re more of a musician’s musician you know?’ Oz is basically like that but with StarCraft. Yeah Zest may have basically set the standard meta for years, but did he come up with a FFE build versus Terran that was actually good? I think not!

TL is releasing a new official Clem shirt. It's initial design concept is top secret and I am breaking NDA to give you guys an advanced look at it. Clem > Serral

Which isn’t taking away from his talent at all. He may be the best player mechanically the game has ever seen. A game whose top players are so good mechanically that, outside of BW, even mid-tier players can swap to basically any RTS and be (purely mechanically) better than veterans of that game. So, a hell of an accolade. For me anyway he’s surpassed guys like Byun, Oliveira, Cure, Gumiho. Speaking of my underrated/overrated list, there’s two of each from that pool! But unless something crazy happens, SC2 ends up with a bunch of new money, new players and we start to see new talent flourishing, I honestly can’t think of what Clem could ever do in the current SOTG to push above Maru, Inno or Mvp. Serral for me did it, despite the gradual decline in scene depth. 6 years of basically unparalleled consistency, a winning H2H versus basically everyone, not having a weak matchup (relatively speaking), maybe having the strongest matchup we’ve ever seen in his ZvP. Clem hasn’t done most of those things, and if he eventually does it’s from the base of a 2024 scene. Aside from the absolute lunatics who make out that Serral’s accomplishments count for jack, because people apparently forgot how to play the second Kespa pulled out, I think most would concede that Serral doing his thing way back in 2018 was within a scene that still had rather a lot of depth. I love Clem, but even if he absolutely exploded I don’t think one can really argue the same in 2024

Be interested to have my memory refreshed! Innovation I dunno if I’d have him as most abusive, because he was so bloody good anyway. A player like Roro perhaps who did jack shit outside of a particular meta. Parting was a quality player but if there’s a player who abused the most annoying aspects of Protoss it was him.
