WTL Winter Power Hexagons
The WTL is back! Many discussions have been had around the changes to the format, from the integration of delegations, the addition new-old maps or the choice to randomize the initial map on which players would play. But there is one crucial feature of the WTL that has been brought back to universal applause (I take your silence for your approbation) I'm talking of course of the Power Hexagon.
The operation is simple, each WTL players get analyzed by a crack team of Chinese Starcraft 2 analysts (probably helped by top of the line computer software) and broke down into six characteristics that get ranked on a 10 points grade:
- Attack - Micro - Strategy - Defense - Mindset - Macro
Now of course, there's some limitations to this model, can a player really be described by a simple 60 points grade? Of course not, and that's why WTL have address the problem by adding a bar graph with 4 new measurements, to bring the whole to more reasonable 100 points grade. The SCboy analysts have revealed the data composing this complex new bar graph:
- Condition - Earning - Stability - Winning percentage
In any cases, this thread will serve as a way to follow the evolution of the Power Hexagons and the struggle of pro against the precisely engineered algorithm of SCBoy.

Nice work not only giving us all the Hexagons but also some nice analysis on it Great take in it as well, thanks

Cham beating both ace zergs of DPG was insane!
|
Cham also beat everyone by having the biggest smile in all of the submitted the profile pics.

Lol mana still perfectly balanced as all things should be.

surprised nobody is a 90+, maru seems like the highest in the league with and 89, but it also feels like trap rogue dark should be closer or above

For the bar graph, condition depends on how many wins they have in recent 10 games, so online monsters like clem cure and zest will have is very high. And each point for earning is $100000, the closest person to a 10 is rogue, if he can win something big again. If you earn less than $100000 but higher than $20000 (I think that's the number) that's also a one, so percival and some other GP and NV's team members could also get a 0 on that.

And stability is now a mistery, all top players got a 8 and only maru get a 9.

Clearly the "earning" measurement isn't something as trivial as prize money earn, it relate to a complex mix of monetary values, but also the spiritual development earn with Starcraft as well as the social and intellectual development. Rogue being a zerg player doing only brain dead op build and as thus having no friends, all the money in the world can't make up for it.
But seriously, ya it seems like a mistake there's probably a couple more like that. While I haven't check, if last season is to be believe about half the point total vs actual point don't balance.

Upsets of the week The SCBoy analysts have been hard at work last week trying to figure out how team GP had managed to dupe the system. Their effort were not entirely successful as both Prince ( at -11) and Ryung (at -14) split maps vs their opponent, although Cham was visibly destabilized by playing someone of the exact same Hexagonal strength in Scarlett. The upset of the week does not goes to them though, but rather to Zoun who split blows with Maru despite being a -23 points underdog.
Changes This season, the WTL teams seems to have become a lot more reactive to adjust their Hexagon, here's are the biggest winner and loser of week 1.
Biggest winner: Classic: +6 Overall points (+1 micro, +1 defense, +2 condition, +2 winning percentage) Biggest loser: SpeCial: -4 Overall points (-3 condition, -2 micro, -1 attack, +1 macro, +1 winning percentage) A special mention to Rogue who would have had a -5 deduction if it wasn't for the readjustment of his earning stats.

Thanks for the data collection and analysis. Also, I would love WTL to add another bar chart for the "matchup-strength" to give players an actual measurement on that, probably to replace one of the "Condition" or "Stability" column as they seems to mean the same thing. Like Clem TvZ would probably be a 9 or 10, but his TvT would only be a 6 or 7 imo.

Upsets of the week The GP coaches clearly expect nothing but the best of their players and not even scoring the biggest upset in WTL history could prevent him for getting benched for failing to win an even match last week. The gods should have punished such a immense display of hubris, but GP challenged the judgment of the divinities as well as the all mighty hexagons of men. Prince had the biggest upset of the week, going 1-1 at -21, and Percival did as much winning the ace at -15 vs Solar (after equalizing vs TIME at -5). Going into week 4, GP now have a differential of +153.
The nonsense of the Korean squad shouldn't hide the display of MaxPax scoring one of the only 2-0 upset vs Trap (-10) and of RagnaroK (beating Clem tvz at -14)
Changes The frantic algorithm of the Power Hexagon kept on churning out many changes this week.
Biggest winner: Zest +6 overall points (+5 condition, +1 stability) Biggest loser: ByuN -7 overall points (-2 condition, -3 macro, -2 defense, -1 strategy, +1 attack) Special mention to Cure who lost two points, and as such suffered a -8 points swing toward Zest, yet another indubitable proof that the protoss got cheat out of his GSL.

Upsets of the week With the Stay at Home Story cup giving the SCBoy analysts a few more days to work with, one could have though they would have created their best hexagons yet, but looking at the upsets of the week it seemed like they instead joined their German brothers in heavy drinking and debauchery.
RagnaroK (-10), Classic (-13) and Zoun (-16) all punched above their weight with the latter scoring a 2-0 over Dark. It was another disappointing performance by DPG zerg duo, who now led their team to two defeats despite a 125 hexagonal points differential.
But the woes of DPG were not even the biggest oversight of the hexagons as team GP continued their Cinderella story. The Power Hexagons authorities doubled down on their assessment of GP's players and actually decreased the points of both Percival and Cham going into week 4. On the opposite, the highest ranking player Maru had been increased even higher, scoring a near perfect 91 and becoming the first ''S+'' player. The set up was too perfect for Prince, who secured GP win with a -28 points upsets.
Changes The Hexagonal neural network didn't made any sweeping changes this week but gave some well earned reward to a couple of players.
Biggest winners: ByuN +5 overall points (+3 condition, -2 winning percentage, +1 attack, +1 strategy, +1 defense, +1 macro) and Prince + 5 overall points (+1 condition, -1 stability, +1 winning percentage, +1 attack, +1 micro, +1 strategy, +1 macro). Upset of the week
The algorithm got almost everything right this time around, but a lone point of major discrepancy remain when Cyan mange to upset Zest in garbage time to take a 1-1 at -22 point.
Changes There was fairly little change major changes as the SCBoy crew still refused to bump the stats of the GP crew, even lifting 3 points out of Ryung hexagon.
Biggest winner: Bunny +3 points (+3 condition) Biggest loser: Zest -5 points (-1 micro, -1 macro, -2 condition)
The free-fall of GSL champion Cure continued, for the third week in a row he lost some points, two more to be exact, making it 8 since his victory over Zest.

They don't seem to go bellow five, at least for the judgment based stats.

Upsets of the week
After a near perfect week for the algorithm, the humans chaos was reintroduced into the WTL.
Armani got the upset of the week, with a 2-0 at -14 points vs Cure, it was especially telling of the machines since after weeks and weeks of slow decline, this week marked an improvement of Cure power stats just before his biggest blunder of the season. Other upset were Coffee scoring a map at -11, Prince getting the 2-0 at -8 vs SpeCial and YB tying MaNa at -12.
Changes
Biggest winner: Dream +4 overall points (+3 condition, +1 winning percentage)
Biggest loser: Maru -5 overall points (-2 condition, -1 winning percentage, -1 defense, -1 strategy). Once again the hexagon challenged the gods by lowering the stats of both Prince (-3) and Percival (-4) just before yet another clutch performance from the team.

Upsets of the week
The hexagons did pretty good overall, but missed two huge upset.
Has and hero pulled two of the biggest surprise of the season, the first one winning 2-0 at -18 against the usually very reliable Solar and herO splinting 1-1 against the best player in the league Maru. It was however sadly meaningless in both cases.
Changes
Unsurprisingly with the shorten off-week there was little changes outside of the automatic bar stats, but I'll take a second to congratulate YB/ Hush/Vivid/Bong for his first point in earning, almost a decade after the start of his career. Good job and keep on working!
Biggest winners: Maru: +4 overall points (+1 condition, +1 winning percentage, +1 attack, +1 micro), Scarlett: +4 overall points (+1 condition, +1 winning percentage, +1 macro, +1 mindset), Nice: +4 overall points (+4 condition), Ryung: +4 overall points (+1 condition, +1 stability, +1 winning percentage, +1 attack)

I know, I know, I've missed a week. I'm sure you are living in deep despair, robbed of the steady reference points that only an overly precise Starcraft 2 grading system can provide. But fear no more because, like DeGaulle before me; I have heard you.
Anyway here's the main take of the week 8 hexagons, week 9 coming soon (tm)
Biggest upset:
It was almost a perfect week for the SCBoy analyst, neither MaxPax and Harstem getting 1-1 split at -8 nor GuMiho scoring a 2-0 at -6 made them look particularly bad, but that was all blown away in the very last map of the week as Gerald got a map vs Dark at -24, giving his team the win, in maybe the most important result of the season for Psistorm.
Changes
Biggest winner: Two protoss got the nod, Classic +4 (+1 winning percentage, +1 attack, +1 defense, +1 micro) and Harstem +4 (+1 winning percentage, +1 mindset, +1 attack, +1 micro)
Biggest loser: In one of the algorithm moment of brilliance, it flair the possibility of an upset of the usually ultra reliable Kz_ Solar who is even considered to be on an upward potential, they reduced his score by 5 points (-3 condition, -1 stability, -1 defense) saving themselves from a 10 point 0-2 upset, as Solar lost to RagnaroK.

Upsets of the week Once again DPG were the biggest victim of upsets this week with TL captain/coach Kelazhur getting the 1-1 split at -17 point against Rogue, although for once it didn't cost the Chinese powerhouse this week. To find meaningful upset, once needed to looked at NV vs SR in their duel atop the ranking. Common knowledge has the Rebellions as the overachievers of the season, but in fact the hexagons had them as a rather big favorite over NV, but that was before two upset, DRG getting the 1-1 split vs ByuN at -8, but most importantly Creator beating Lambo 2-0 despite a 10 point difference.

So maru is the only s plus player rn. Can there only be one s plus player? If not, does anyone know what the cutoff is?

I think it's: 50-60= C 60-70= B 70-80=A 80-90=S 90-100= S+

Upsets of the week With the playoff race tightening every upset threatened to end a teams season, and the SCBoy staff can be critical of almost each of the teams battling for the last spots. On the Psi side, MaxPax could convert on a small but still noticeable +6 advantage, dropping a map to Vanya, but that wouldn't have cost them to much, until Nice managed to score a 2-1 (1-1 + an ace win) against SpeCial at -9, perhaps destroying the American team playoff hope in the process. Psi destined were still somewhat kept alive by an even bigger series of upset in the IG vs TL, Coffee scoring a 2-0 at -12 points vs Harstem and XY getting a map off uThermal at -18. Also notable, Prince getting a 1-1 vs Classic despite being down 10 point, as the GP Protoss, one of the worst ranked player in the league, continued to build his argument for an outside MVP choice were his team to sneak into the playoff next week.
Changes Weeks in weeks out, the hexagonal algorithm continued to make adjustment to the players rating.
Biggest winner: Zest +4 overall points (+4 condition, +1 stability, -1 strategy)
Biggest loser: Bunny: -6 overall points (-1 macro, -5 something else) part of Bunny stats were sadly lost to time (or Twitch archive). Also deserving a mention as the second biggest loser of the week, mister Maru with -4 overall points (-3 condition, -1 defense) dropping at 89 point and out of the S+ category.
All changes: + Show Spoiler + Maru: -4 overall points (-3 condition, -1 defense) Spirit: -1 overall point (-2 condition, +1 defense) Creator: +3 overall points (+1 condition, +1 mindset, +1 defense) TIME: +2 overall points (+2 condition) Bunny: -6 overall points (-1 macro, -5 something else) ByuL: +1 overall point (+1 condition) Has: -1overall point (-1 condition) Zest: +4 overall points (+4 condition, +1 stability, -1 strategy) ByuN: -2 overall points (-2 condition) Scarlett: -3 overall points (-2 condition, -1 strategy) hero: -2 overall points (-2 condition) Cure: -3 overall points (-1 macro, -1 attack, -1 condition) MaxPax: +1 overall points Rattata: +2 overall points (+1 macro, +1 strategy) GuMiho: +1 overall point (+1 condition) Dream: +1 overall point (+1 condition) SpeCial: +1 overall point (+1 condition) RagnaroK: +2 overall points (+2 condition) Zoun: +1 overall point Ryung: -1 overall point (-1 condition) Classic: -3 overall points (-3 condition) Prince: -2 overall points (-2 condition) Harstem: +3 overall points (+1 attack, +2 something else) Coffee: +1 overall point uThermal: +2 overall points XY: -1 overall point (-1 condition) Clem: +1 overall point (+1 condition)

bunny is actually at -4; he was at 68 in the week you missed :c (so basically he lost 2 after nv vs dpg to go from 70 to 68) i dug up the old vod and he lost 1 in macro, 1 in stability, and 2 in condition in the -4. unfortunately, i am too lazy to keep on digging for the nv vs dpg vod to figure out what else he lost, but i am leaving the screenshot of week 8 bunny as a loose end + Show Spoiler +

Upsets of the week
There was only one real upset this week, and it's one that was a long time coming, after spectacular implosion times and times from ByuL, he finally carried through all game long and manage to 2-0 ByuN at -16 point.
Changes
Biggest winner: XY: +6 overall points (+1 macro, +1 strategy, +1 defense, +1 micro, +2 form point) did the cold metallic circuit of the SCboy mega-computer developed some kind of feeling? Hard to know for sure, but XY getting bumped after his first win after 18 straight loses feels like an well earned reward and a good indication that his 10 score in mentality was right all along
Biggest loser: Not many loser this week, but the facto Dark: -4 overall points (-4 condition) get the biggest reduction of this week.
All changes: + Show Spoiler + Prince: +1 overall point (+1 condition) Harstem: +2 overall points (+1 defense, +1 something else) Percival: -1 overall point (-1 condition) uThermal: -3 overall points (-2 condition, -1 micro) Classic: +3 overall points (+3 condition) Cyan: -1 overall point (-1 condition) RagnaroK: +1 overall point (+1 condition) Nice: +3 overall points (+1 condition, +1 condition, +1 attack) Maru: +2 overall points Gerald: -2 overall points Bunny: +3 overall points (+3 condition) MaxPax: +2 overall points DRG: +4 overall points (+4 condition) GuMiho: +2 overall points (+2 condition) ByuL: -2 overall points (-2 condition) ByuN: +1 overall points (+1 condition) Scarlett: -2 overall points (-2 condition) Lambo: -1 overall point Has: -1 overall point Coffee: +3 overall points (+1 strategy, +2 something else) Armani: +1 overall point KeeN: -1 overall point (-1 condition) Trap: +1 overall point (+1 condition) XY: +6 overall points (+1 macro, +1 strategy, +1 defense, +1 micro, +2 form point) Dark: -4 overall points (-4 condition) Solar: +3 overall points (+3 condition) Zest: -2 overall points (-2 condition) Spirit: +2 overall points (+2 condition) TIME: +1 overall point (+1 condition)
End of the year Hexagons recap
Least valuable player: Rogue -93 points
We will never know who Rogue really is. We’ll never quite know what we’re supposed to call him.
The least reliable person in the room?
The worst player in the world?
A con-artist that fake his way on the DPG roaster?
There is one option that fits better than the rest.
It’s "Cham's bitch".
Jokes aside the players with the worst differential are obviously the most high ranking player, behind Rogue come Dark at -91, still particularly bad and explaining the (relative) disappointment of DPG, Maru at -71 and Clem at -65. But the Hexagons also reveal some very disappointing results from players that would be hard to see at first sight.
SpeCial 7-13 record could be seen as perfectly reasonable, from the algorithm judgement make it one of the worst under performance in the league, with a -52 ratio and not a single win against adversaries with more points. In a season where PSI missed the playoff by the skins of their teeth it's a bad look for the generally quite solid Mexican terran.
Trap had back to back loses against MaxPax and Lambo that could lead people to see him as having a disappointing season, but in fact his -35 ratio compared quite well with player from his range point having a good number of upset himself and on the opposite ByuN (-45) and especially Solar (-64) didn't actually lived close to their potential.
Most valuable player: The entire GP team +199 points ( Cham +87; Prince +80, Percival +31; Ryung +11)
GP has broken the hexagons algorithm and left it in shamble, Cham and Prince are the two player with the best differential, the biggest upset Ryung has allowed was -1. It was an immense team effort all season long and one of the best underdog performance from a ragtag group of players forgotten to everyone. But, you want to know the most depressing stats of all time? At the end of the day, GP would have need exactly +200 points to make the playoffs, Ryung losing to Harstem with a +1 advantage, so close yet so far.
There were other great performances, Has (+67) and Coffee (+53) did great work for their teams despite an utter lack of help from the rest of their team. However if there was a single player that overperformed under the radar, it would be Afreeca Freecs Armani (+50), even if the last map of the season broke his streak with a small -2 upset to Coffee, he has done amazing work weeks in and weeks out, he only has 1 big upset (2-0 vs Cure), but all the rest come from stealing a maps he shouldn't win here and there and was an integral part of AF making it to the playoff.
Other honorable mention are: ByuL (+43), Nice (+30) and Zoun (+29).
Alright, that's it for me, see you all in 2022 for the next season of the WTL!
