2020-21 ESL Pro Tour: Open Cups

Overcoming tough opposition, (Wiki)Armani managed to secure his third victory in the ESL Open Cup KR and also reached the finals in the American edition, though he was stopped from celebrating a double triumph by (Wiki)PartinG. In Europe, (Wiki)HeRoMaRinE locked down his 14th first place, possibly starting another winning streak.

Skill and a bit of luck went hand in hand to enable Armani to win his third gold medal in the Korean edition of the ESL Open Cups. The Afreeca Zerg had to eliminate his team mate (Wiki)DongRaeGu as well as online tournament terror (Wiki)Cure to reach the semi-finals, where PartinG, who had to play a team match that day, didn't show up and offered the Zerg a walk-over. Armani made the best out of the opportunity and narrowly defeated (Wiki)Solar in a close series to claim the overall win.

Weeks since someone else than HeRoMaRinE or (Wiki)ShoWTimE won the ESL Open Cup EU: Six Seven Eight. The field at least looked somewhat different in Cup #32, with ShoWTimE suffering an early loss at the young hands of (Wiki)MaxPax, who managed to find a gap in the German's steadfast defences. With die Mauer eliminated, Big Gabe was left virtually unopposed on his side of the bracket and continued his undefeated streak until he reached the finals. Here, (Wiki)Clem made an appearance after being absent ever since the end of June, but couldn't achieve much more than to ruin his German opponent's streak of remaining without a map loss. If the Terran wants to do his Protoss countryman one better, he'll have to start another streak next week. Notably, (Wiki)Reynor returned to the ESL Open this week, but played the tournament as Protoss.

After a brief respite with two non-Koreans in the finals last week, the American edition of the ESL Open Cups returned to its usual state of affairs in week 32. Armani used the momentum of his victory in his home region to start a run into the finals of the American edition, taking out (Wiki)RagnaroK in a close ZvZ series in the semis, before actually meeting PartinG in the finals, who did not grant him a walk-over win this time. Even so, Armani almost claimed victory despite the Protoss player's best resistance, gaining a 2-1 lead and match point. Ever the cool head, though, the Big Boy managed to climb back into the series and turn things around, bringing up his gold medal count on the American server to eight.

ESL Open Cup winners earn $200 in prize money and 10 ESL Pro Tour points. Players who finish second earn 5 ESL Pro Tour points and $100. A top 4 finish guarantees at least $50. Week #33 of ESL Open Cups is set to take place on August 24th.

Impressive run(s) by Armani. Also, Rex beat soO and was a map off of beating Solar? Feel like that deserved a mention in the write-up.

Both his offraces are pretty decent. 6.5k at Protoss.

He won at least one of them, if the title is to be believed .

Also, what the heck happened to showtime?! He missed his date with big Gabe in the finals this week.

Pretty good actually. He also mentioned often that he has "special builds" prepared for PvZ and PvT, unfortunate that he got a PvP.

Ah, curses! Still, Clem ruined the new streak then, so it's still true.
