Damn, he already beat Hurricane. Not bad for a first quali after military. If he beats Dream that would be super hype. No way he gets past Cure though.

Fuck yeah ByuN finally back!! The 2nd god of Terran stronger as ever with an epic comeback. Hopefully he saves Terran while Maru heals (if that’s even possible) his injury...
ByuN basically hit the jackpot in terms of career planning. Went to military a few years before he absolutely needed to instead of trying to stall things out until the last possible moment. Now he's coming back and can focus 100% on the game without having to worry about military. He can go to any event outside of Korea without issue as well once those are finally possible again.
And all the while he always intended to come back to the game, so when he had time to play he did. Meaning his level didn't take a hard drop like for other military returnees.

Yeah, Dream for example got to the millitary early as well, but he didn t practise while serving. I took him like a year to come back into Ro8 contender form
And his wrists are probably in a better shape right now, plus he will have to face players with less qualities than the ones actually playing due to this military thing.

ByuN was in the 7k MMR range basically during his entire military service. And with the qualifiers played online because of Covid he's probably feeling comfortable as well. I think overall not too surprising especially since I don't think those 3 are the best vT players.

I'd still consider 2-0'ing Cure a huge upset for a guy who hasn't played a professional match in almost 2 years. And Byun had fallen off quite a bit when he quit; relatively I'd say he was at the same level as Cure is now, maybe even lower

Would be a different thing if they weren't playing from home I think. With this it's probably more comfortable for ByuN to play to his ladder level. I wouldn't necessarily expect him to immediately go deep in GSL though.
Yeah even I thought he could upset Dream but no way get past Cure... he was not in superb shape before leaving and ladder ain’t the same as playing professional matches as said before.
Very impressive return. Playing from home definitely helps though indeed. But that’s supposed to help Cure as well...
looking at the Standings, I think he d need a Top 4 finish in GSL to put him into Katowice contention, or realy realy good results in the other major tournaments, that award points: ESL Pro Tour/2020/21/Korea/Standings

With a top 8 finish he could also have a chance at the dreamhack finals, then the alpha x tournament but he would need a miracle in the qualifier, then super tournament 2?
Is there other announced stuff that grants EPT points before katowice?
Wowow Oo Quite some intriguing results today. Byun winning his group is just a part of that. Inno and Dark not making it (yet), and i thought they said soO will go to the military after season 2? But now he qualified for the third... i guess he still has a shot at winning

soO doesn't know the exact date when he joins the military yet, only that it's October/November. So I guess Afreeca was completely fine with him playing anyway.

forgg is streaming atm like every day. highly recommend if you want to witness someone go 0-30 to parting on NA ladder and not tilt, hes a machine. KESPA training for years I guess..
I heard GSLBaldGuy is casting these from replays, the Byun matches and sOs beating Dark will be hype as fuck to watch. I also really hope ByuN still has his puppy and were gonna see it at GSL :D

Yeah, insane mental fortitude on dealing with loss. I just got a bad day with 0-10 losing streak and I am about to slam my desk lol

I don't understand what ForGG is doing: he quit SC2, cameback to BW, qualified for KSL kinda got smashed, then trained hard and got better results, I really started feeling he's back for good but then he left BW for SC2 again. Dude needs to consider one game if he wants to be good on it.

Pretty stoked for ByuN !
Better money in streaming sc2 probably.

Few months ago it was. He was even playing under "ByuN" months ago too but now switched to a barcode.

he made top 8 in gsl twice in 2017 where he lost to inno and maru...and in 2018 he made it to top 8 once..this was also the year where his wrists were super fucked up and swollen. im confident that if his wrists are better he will be able to make top 8 - 4 next gsl

I believe he said in some interview that he likes SC2 more, not sure and won't search for it, it's a possibility.

Nah this is Maru, at least according to sc2revealed. But ByuN was at the top recently, seems like he left league and is not ranked now.

Making top 8 three times over two years and getting stomped in all of them isn't exactly deserving of the hype that's associated with him. Wrist issues or not he was basically invisible in 2018

Well obviously, the reason for the hype has nothing to do with 2017-2018.
It goes far beyond his GSL and Blizzcon wins as well. Even as far back as 2011 (2012?), we all knew MVP was the king. Then MVP tells everyone that he isn't even the best terran, Byun is. Byun made a couple of Code S semis, but didn't live up to the hype in tourneys. However, MVP wouldn't say that unless he thought Byun was a championship caliber player.
After that, Byun went MIA and only played online. There, he had like a 90% winrate in every matchup and won like every online tourney. His criticism was that a lot of the top players weren't participating. After a while, top Koreans started entering these tourneys as well. Byun still did just as well. It was like 3 years of play at 80-90% winrate and a long time at the top of Aligulac. After this, he went on to his infamous tournament wins and got reapers nerfed as the only player without a team. To my knowledge, he started having wrist issues after that. He still did solidly, but not up to his previous standard, as mentioned. It's unfair to say his hype isn't deserved based off only 2017-2018, especially when even if he doesn't win anything a lot of people are hyped to see him back because his games are entertaining as hell.
As I already mentioned, in his last match before military he'd 8-3d Dark, the best ZvT player at the time. Considering he's been sitting at the top of KR GM recently while in the military and took out Dream and Cure in his first matches back, that's exciting.

It’s very exciting indeed. He’s a curious cat is ByuN. In a glorious way.
I just hope his wrists can hold up. I can’t think of a single player with a worse regime for wrist longevity, equally not everyone is as susceptible to wrist problems as others.
His practice regime is very grind heavy, and his style is very micro intensive even for a Terran.

To add: this was a time when the rigour of kespa teamhouses was still relevant - the players that had been built in this environment were dominating. Byun breaking this trend whilst being so solitary is an unrivalled feat in SC2.
I read that Creighton was supposed to cast ByuN's qualifier games from replay but can't find any VOD, can someone share it if it's been casted already?
