i'd rather have the entire RO16 of S2 invited to S3 and a more meaningful qualifier, a real code A, for the last 12 spots

Unfortunately I think Korea was ignored for too long for new players to enter the stage. The damage seems irreversible. At this point, old players will return and some of them might do well (I‘d be surprised if ByuN didn‘t do well, tbh) , but I don‘t see young players joining the scene.
Although I would disagree that the state is sad. It‘s just kind of... fixed with little to no change in the field. The players that are there are mostly still good though. Some might get smashed, but that happens in every sport, every league - and even in Finals.

Feel free to disagree. But Code S was already reduced from 32 players to 28 this year, and considering these qualifier brackets it won't be long before 28 is unjustifiable. For every 1 guy coming back from the military several guys leave.

The sky has been falling since 2011. I know someday GSL will be over but it's not this year and I'm going to keep enjoying it as long as it lasts.
