As part of the revamped EPT circuit, every season features Season Finals during which the top finishers of each region compete in a global online tournament for additional EPT points and prize money. While the qualification process for these tournaments had already been laid out by ESL and DreamHack for almost all regions, South Korea was still undecided. It has now been announced that the GSL will hold decider matches to determine the final two slots of its lineup. (Wiki)TY, (Wiki)Cure, (Wiki)PartinG and (Wiki)INnoVation, the top 4 finishers of last season, have already accepted their invites to the Season 1 Finals.

The two decider matches will be held on 18 June, between (Wiki)Dark vs (Wiki)Maru and (Wiki)Dear vs (Wiki)Trap, who finished in 5th-8th.

So are these bo5s? And is it on the new map pool or the old GSL one (with Obsidian)?

Make a 2v2 out of it instead. Dark & Maru vs Dear and Trap. Winning team takes the two slots.

I wished it was Maru vs. Dear and Trap vs. Dark, so that Maru and Dark would go to represent Korea in that tournament. But hey as someone above said, it's always good to see a Maru vs Dark.

Korea should have 2 more spots and been top 8 of season 1. Would’ve been weird but this is even weirder

On one hand I really want Maru to play in this but it would be sad not to have a single Korean Zerg. They should have just done it based on GSL points rather than placement in the last season.

Omg now GSL top 4 gets another free entry for another Premier tourney...
I already hate the GSL seed into top 16. Rich gets richer.

How is qualifying through a full GSL season "free entry"? It's how every other regional EPT division also works.

Most recent GSL season's performance makes more sense than points given that there's several Masters, but points carry throughout the year. Doing well in the first GSL of the year shouldn't be relevant to qualifying for the second or third Masters.

Yeah this complaint - if at all - would apply to every region, not just Korea. But really the season finals are showdowns of the top finishing players of every division - aka a "rich get richer" invitational. That is very much the point.

Starcraft equity is a fun topic. If you smoothed out prize curves even further, would selective players like Dark and Maru participate in MORE events, or would they just retire? What's the breaking point for equity where that happens?

It's not different to any other such tournament that people qualify for. Top performers of a year qualified for BlizzCon, now Katowice. Top performers of one season get the extra opportunity to compete against top performers of other regions for additional money and points. They don't have those thrown at them, they have to perform to earn the opportunity. Really not correct to call it an invitational given that it's based on performance in a season that serves as a qualifier.

So yes, the rich get richer, but they have to earn the extra chance. Nothing wrong with that in my eyes.

As shocking as I also find it, I believe this will not be broadcasted. First of all, the announcement is insanely late, secondly, there is no mention of it being broadcasted anywhere, and thirdly, youtube already set up the reminder for the first GSL group on Saturday but NOT the one for these games, which are tomorrow...

ESL admins have chosen broadcasters, but it's not public who they are yet. They said in Discord that they just sent out the invitations to folks a few hours ago. This will be broadcast, but we don't know by whom or where yet.

Hey everyone, I will be broadcasting this in English on Twitch tomorrow. I'm not sure if I'm the only English broadcaster chosen, but there are limited lobby spaces so it depends how many other languages there were that applied for it.

Surprising to see that it's not the points ranking which determines the invitees, but this is actually much better. Now at the season finals we get the in-form players instead of the year-round good players. (the latter is what Katowice is for)

Having a couple of playoff matches like this feels a bit akward, maybe a better system can be made in the future (eight players from Korea?). But it definitely seems the best way to do it for now - much better to have actual matches decide rather than have some inevitably-arbitrary administrative decision decide.

(Wiki)ESL Pro Tour/2020/21/Masters/Summer/KR

I would've preferred a 4 player group instead of a single elimination bracket, kinda crazy that Maru and Dark can't both qualify together

Really cool to have more global events though (Wiki)ESL Pro Tour/2020/21

Yeah this format definitely leaves something to be desired haha, I think if it were a group stage format or round robin there's a pretty good chance Dark & Maru are the two who go through.

Wasn't there a huge lag issue (for broadcaster) if a caster is from EU and it's being played on KR?
