Won't bother with adding further Fanta GG timing jokes, seems they've all been covered in the Reddit thread.
Man, I'm choking up.
Mod Edit: Rumour - According to what Xiaose (Chinese caster and one of the founders of China Team Championship) said, he is gonna go coaching LOL players.
So sad to see my boy fantasy retiring i want to see him stream bw but whatever his decision is it will be fine. He has a lot of good games these days like beating reynor, inno, dark, rogue etc and it was all exciting. It's so sad but i wish him well in his future endeavors.
We'll have some new blood for Ro32 gsl next year cause there is no pgm left (Gumi, herO, Fantasy, Classic & Keen). The New wave is Chance, Percival, LunaSea and some new rising stars...
Anyway glhf Fantasy, one of my favourite terran. very kind and manner i like this guy. Hope he will be successful in his new way.
Tragic.. Always an interesting player to watch in both iterations of StarCraft, I couldn't wait to see him return to Brood War. Hopefully we at least see him stream it.
Oh well. Good luck to him in his coaching position.
Im really sad. He was by far my favourite player. I feel like he was often very unlucky with some loses... i wish he could have won something in the end. But he is not the youngest and he has to make a decision. I wish him the best of luck in his future life!
Uh Gumi and Fantasy gone. Hmmm, how surprising. One of the last few competitive Terran's in KR (and the world). Blizzard please let us know your T;P;Z lineup next year. This should be fun seeing a two race game.
Fantasy would smash face if he went back to BW. Towards the end of the kespa BW era, Fantasy was a top player. He lost narrowly to Jangbi in 2 OSL finals, but managed to 3-0 Flash.

Yes there are. Sure guys like Classic, GuMiHo, Fantasy and Hero retired, but new players like Chance, Dynamite, Zoun, SpeeD and others came back from the army and might try to qualify (plus some aspiring pros like Rookie, Prince, Soloist, etc).

This, or there will be more space for foreigners attempting to qualify(given they would like to).

So which of these actually retired and who is actually just doing their military service?

Fanta is the only guy who's not going into the army.
I’m sad to see him go. He was a really interesting player who in both sc2 and broodwar asserted his unique approach to rts games and made it work at the highest level of play. One of the most stylistic and stylish players I have ever watched.
I will never forget his game vs ragnoroc back in hots where he nearly won vs a 4 base Zerg after being bane busted and having only 6 workers. When your a micro god it makes sense to fantasy gg timing. I will miss him.
I see a lot of comments about his potential move to a coaching role in League as "easy money". I really feel like that denigrates fantasy's decision to pursue other opportunities, coaching might be a much more fulfilling job for Fantasy at this stage in his life. People's choices aren't all about money, or else Fantasy would have never came back to sc2 in the first place.
Anyways, I wish Fantasy luck in the future, thanks for all the awesome games!

Fantasy to me seems to continually favour new challenges over easy money and I see this as another example of that.
Being real the easy money for him is just streaming BW and he continually does other stuff so it’s grossly unfair for anyone to level that at him.

Shame!
Wish all the best for him.
The long term future of SC2 is very much unknown, so anyone who isn't a premier tournament winning player moving on is not too surprising.
Sad truth to the matter. Unless you're the very best and capable of winning an event or placing Top 4 a majority of the time. It's not worth it, even the likes of Classic who's probably Top 2 Protoss this year is already gone.
More job secuity being a LoL coach, and I wish the best for Fantasy in his endeavors. Though it'd be better if he went to BW at least for the entertainment factor and those who loved his career/run back in the day. He's shown he can even topple Flash in a TvT.

Classic certainly didn't retire because he wanted more money, he had to go to the army. And if Fantasy wanted to be covered in money he would have gone back to Brood War last year or right after retiring from Sc2, as someone already pointed out.

Quite so!
He could have streamed BW after returning from military service, but he explicitly chose to play SC2 because he wanted to be an active competitor. Being in LCK/LoL lets him continue that.
I guess I am just too dumb to comprehend how a RTS progamer could be a coach for a game that is entirely different from his experience. Even SC1 and SC2 required completely different understanding of mechanics and mindset. I do not assume that Fantasy doesnt know the LoL itself, I wouldn't be, however, surprised that players he is supposed to "train" would know the game infinitely better than him. Unless the "coach" isn't just a jargon for "menager" here.

I assume he played LoL for years already, so guess he has acquired quite some game knowledge. Also he can coach the winner's mentality and do some work / life balance coaching or sth along those lines
Fantasy isnt the first to switch from StarCraft player to LoL coaching. Several others have done it previously such as FruitDealer, StarDust, Violet & iloveoov just to name a few.

And yet, after all this years of oov "transformation", I still cannot understand this. I tried to rationalized that as a form of a retirement for accomplished players that e-sport industry encourage for preventing a stereotype that "professional e-sport will ruin your later life", but even that had so much logic holes that doesn't fit as an explanation.
towards the end of his career, he was one of those players who was always in the top 15-20 players in the world (it felt; be free to correct me). and pretty much has nothing to show for it. sad that he never had that breakthrough moment. gl

He finished BW in the Number 1 ELO spot
i'm not talking about his bw career!! nooo. im talking recent fantasy not fantasy prime.

Yeah that makes a lot more sense. More of a mentor/management role for guys like Fantasy makes a lot more sense than recruiting SC players to strategise.

It’s a shame, I felt he was consistently getting better and would have had some deep runs this year. Was excited both to see a legend conquer another game plus stylistically I enjoyed his approach to the game.
Oh well, with Fantasy and Gumigod gone we need a resurgent Taeja or Dream to hopefully bring the pain this year.

theres more to coaching than just gameplay strategy. i highly doubt fantasy would be involved in much in-game related things like analysis, feedback, drafting etc. there are a lot of things players need outside of the game which fantasy would have much experience and knowledge with, not as a coach but as a player himself. coming from skt would be especially valuable i assume, given the teams' success in not just lol but starcraft as well
Such a shame, one of my favourite players. He was looking pretty good lately too, and with all the other retirements I thought he'd do well in 2020. Unless he knows something we don't about GSL.
His decision to return to SC2 after the military was actually a bit surprising in terms of his own personal prospects (given his bigger fanbase in BW - or he could have left esports altogether). However, the decision to leave SC2 now to coach a totally different game, when several of his competitors in Korea are leaving for military service, his form is good and his race will hopefully have better prospects in 2020, also seems a strange one to me.
I guess the SC2 community members who haven't followed other esports may be surprised by it, but it's very common for ex-pros from other games to coach new games in LoL (at least in Korea). I can't speak to whether or not this is actually effective, but all I can say is that it's a very common practice. Just among the SC2 players we know, Stardust has been coaching lol for a few years now, while MMA has been coaching Overwatch for a year.
I struggle understanding him, there is no way he'll make more money or have a bigger fan base anywhere else than in BW. Curious what is his long term plan..
whats so hard to understand about a guy who wants to make an honest living instead of "selling" himself on stream in the hopes that people throw money at him?

I'm just surprised he turned down the Afreeca money, seems easier (maybe more lucrative too?) than coaching another game, i have no doubts he would be among the top streamers. All i heard about Fantasy's work ethic in BW is phenomenal, guys at T1 said he was the first to wake up and play and the last one to go to sleep.
Maybe Fantasy is burnt out on Brood War or wants to conquer something new? Think that was his given rationale for going back to SC2 after he did his military service

sc fans are weirdos who feel like they "own" the players, so whenever players make a decision there's some dude posting on here about "well what he should have done to make more money is blah blah blah blah" like their opinion actually matters to an adult person who has their own goals and interests

So sad to see my all time favorite BW player leave the Starcraft scene completely, even though he wasn't playing BW the last few years I still had some hope that he would come back.
