Updated rules/schedule

The 2019 GSL Tour will be held in a near identical format as the 2018 tour, with three Code S competitions, two Super Tournaments, and GSL vs. The World. The planned schedule for the tournaments is as follows:

  • GSL Season 1: Feb 2 - April 13
  • Super Tournament I: April 18-21
  • GSL Season 2: April 29 - June 22
  • GSL Season 3: July 3 - September 21
  • GSL vs. The World: August 1-4
  • Super Tournament II: September 26-29

Prize money for GSL events has been adjusted to be more equitable across all placements. The total prize pool is ₩680,000,000 KRW, a slight increase from 2018's ₩675,000,000 KRW (due to a ₩5,000,000 KRW prize increase for GSL vs. The World). Prize money redistribution is as follows:

Seeds to the WCS Global Finals will be awarded in the same method as 2018. Eight WCS Korea players will compete at the Global Finals, with Code S champions winning direct seeds. The remaining spots will be awarded according to WCS Korea points earned during the season.

Initial AfreecaTV press release (via Inven)

AfreecaTV has announced that the 2019 Global StarCraft II League (GSL) will be held in a near-identical format as the 2018 season. Three GSL Code S seasons will be held alongside two Super Tournaments, while GSL vs. The World will also be held once more.

The total prize money for the 2019 season is "approximately 680,000,000 KRW," close to 2018's 675,000,000 KRW.

AfreecaTV also announced it would continue to support a variety of non-GSL content such as BJ Destruction match, and new online cups for professional and amateur players.

AfreecaTV's Interactive Content Business Director Mr. Chae said "After starting in 2010, GSL is entering its 10th year this year. I'm very grateful to all the viewers who have continuously sent us their love and interest. In order to repay them, we won't spare any support for the GSL, and a greater variety of esports tournaments going forward."

Great to hear!

Though the fact that it's nearly identical to 2018 GSL does make me wonder why it took so long to announce. And did it say anything about the foreigner ban rumor?

Blizz Prez is new. An entire layer of ATVI upper management in charge of financial stuff was replaced. Makes sense it took a long time. Due to how HGC disappeared the paranoia/fear/skepticism of the community is somewhat reasonable.

i think the takeaway from all this is...
if you love SC2 esports and you want to show ATVI that you want continued support of SC2 esports...
then keep buying the Warchests.

That's a load off. I was honestly getting scared this year with how delayed things have been.

2019 is going to be pretty hype with so many returning pros and where Serral will go from here

Kidding. Glad GSL is still going in with it's regular format.

Korea scene is alive for another year! I'm surprised there's no news about foreigners competing in GSL though.

Feels like sc2 has gotten off to an incredibly slow start this year. Dno, just feels like it's been forever since the last big sc2 thing. Has the Serral momentum/hype been deflated by so much lull time?

Nice, finally confirmation that everything is going well!
Maru and Serral are probably top 5.
