World Electronic Sports Games 2017: Main Event

The unusual player lodging situation at WESG's $400,000 main event may have raised some eyebrows, but the actual competition proceeded without much incident. The first group stage concluded on Wednesday with sixteen familiar names advancing from the Ro32 group stage.

A handful of results did stand out, as (Z)Sioras made his presence felt on the international scene for the first time after his controversial disqualification from GPL 2016. The Mongolian Zerg player advanced in second place from Group A, beating out Romania's (P)NightEnD and China's (Z)XiGua.

Fifteen-year-old Italian Zerg (Z)Reynor also returned to top-flight international competition scene after being locked out of WCS due to Blizzard's age restrictions. Reynor advanced from Group F alongside IEM Katowice runner-up Classic.

The Ro16 group stage is set to be played over the course of the next two days, with eight players advancing to a single-elimination playoff bracket.

I would probably call it the group of death as well, but I am guessing that Sioras would strongly disagree with us at this point. Good god did he ever draw some short straws!

Group C is strong but still relatively predictable while in group D any player can win or end up 4th.

The only favourate in C is Maru. Nerchio and Showtime have close records against eachother (I think), and scarlett's results are very random.
Zest, sOs, PartinG, Dark, and Maru are the real champs. ROOT_herO is overrated. Snute, Serral, and Scarlett are the foreigner GOATs

I was going to say poor ShoWTimE can´t get a break, with 2 two Zergs and Maru, but with 10/16 Zergs it was always going to be like this...

Maru is clear favorite. Nerchio will most likely lose to Showtime, Scarlett will most likely win with Showtime and Scarlett vs Nerchio will decide wheather its Maru+Scarlett or Maru+random based on map scores.

Special should have troubles beating Reynor but we will see.

I feel like uThermal will upset Neeb...

Maru and ShoWTimE for group C!

Group D I think that Bly will upset Elazer and qualify along Serral.

Most surprising result is Namshar going 0-6 in an all zergs group.

Is there somewhere I can watch the games?

Scarlett in the outstanding form played in Katowice too?
I imagine France should be able to take this unless Lilbow is busy practicing for Starcraft III. | KadaverBB is my fairy ban mother.

Scarlett vs soO was outstanding form?

It's hard to make judgments based on matches played vs soO in a GSL Ro8 or above. The universe has already decided what is going to happen when that occurs, nothing could have prevented the inevitable.

Scarlett played pretty well at IEM in the lower bracket, True played really impressive ZvZ series there and knocked her out, but she didn't play bad at all. Losing to soO is bad, but we all know soO is 2nd place again this year. I think Scarllet has a really good chance to RO8. Anyhow, that group is sick and I can even see Maru loosing 1 series to somebody from there since it is BO3.

No, losing to soO was expected and somehow normal.
vs Guru was at the start of the torunament, she was tired and all, she said on the stream, and versus True, well, True played really well those series. But yes, normally she should have won agaisnt Guru and True, but seeing the overall form of her at IEM, I wouldn't say she is off form.

The groups are all bo5 I believe.

yeah, in that case maru and scarlett for sure, don`t see either of them losing a bo5.
