With 32 players, Korean and foreigner, divided into four brackets, three days of qualifiers came to an end with a double (triple?) elimination tournament to determine who would claim the final 10 spots at IEM Shanghai.

Bracket one featured foreigners (P)Neeb and (Z)Snute, but it was (Z)Rogue and (T)ByuN respectively who charged past them. Facing off in a best of five, Rogue swept the Team Expert Terran, holding three rax reaper builds with ease before closing things out with some distinctive ling/bane/hydra play accented with vipers and ultralisks.

(T)Ryung logged the first major upset of the day by beating (P)herO to set up the second consecutive ZvT win and in against (Z)Dark. The result was the same as the first matchup, as the Zerg prevailed without dropping a game. With that Dark became the second player to move on.

Zergs were entirely absent from the third bracket, ensuring that another race would get their day in the sun. (T)Bunny took out (P)sOs, but fell to another Jin Air Green Wing, (T)Maru. (P)Trust didn't drop a game as he moved past (T)aLive and (P)Dear. His undefeated run came to an end at Maru’s hand, though. Maru leapt out to a 2-0 lead and, while Trust became the first player to muster a victory in defeat, he was only able to win one game and fell 3-1.

The final bracket contained an even split of foreigners and Koreans. (T)Kelazhur squeezed past (Z)Elazer, while (Z)Serral comfortably dealt with (P)Patience. Both of them were unable to defeat Koreans in the next round, however. Having posted 4-0 marks, (T)GuMiho and (Z)Solar prepared for a best of five. The first two games were knock down, drag out brawls which Solar managed to come out on top of. Having jumped out to a 2-0 lead, Solar dealt the finishing blow with a proxy hatch ravager rush on Blood Boil.

Down in the loser's bracket, (Z)PenguiN got off to a fast start against ByuN, but the reigning Blizzcon champ pulled it together and qualified by a 3-1 score.

Meanwhile, Ryung and Bunny locked horns in their first TvT of the day. Up 2-1, Bunny set up a siege on Abyssal Reef that shut down Ryung’s fourth while pressuring his third. The move opened up a 50 supply lead that could not be overcome.

Neeb’s torrid week in Korea did not improve as he soundly beaten by the most recent GSL champion, GuMiho, who didn’t drop a game while taking the best of 5 and moving on to the main event.

The series between Trust and herO went the distance, but it was the lesser heralded ex-CJ player who came out on top. This meant that herO moved down to face off against Neeb, while PenguiN and Ryung faced off in the other tie-breaker match.

Ryung favored mech against PenguiN, but while he took the first two games on Odyssey and Proxima Station, he failed to close the deal in the next two. With the series tied 2-2, Ryung turned to bio while PenguiN opted for an unconventional roach/hydra/viper composition that gave him a wide lead. Ryung turtled into ghosts while slowly expanding. He managed to hold firm against waves of ultralisks and brood lords, but the PenguiN’s superior economy allowed him to keep remaxing and eventually complete the reverse all-kill.

In the second tie-breaker match, Neeb, one time slayer of Korean Protoss, went up against herO. Whether it was crisply executed timing attacks or a quicker transition into carriers in game four, The ROOT Protoss proved to be a step ahead of the North American player. After a long day which included six matches, the 3-1 victory made herO the final qualifier for IEM Shanghai.

This gives us the following roster at IEM Shanghai:

The PenguiN? Cobblepot Zerg confirmed?

I would recommend to find the VODs for GuMIho vs Solar game 2 (Sequencer) and PenguiN vs Ryung game 5. One for the sheer scrappy, down and dirty action and one to see a great almost-throw turned underdog victory.

Yah the last game between PenquiN and Ryung was so ridiculous. Talking about throw, herO vs Trus is another one. herO threw the series so hard.

I think it should come as no surprise who was to blame for the PenguiN liquipedia fiasco.

3 Protoss players, 7 Terrans, and 6 Zergs.

I hope the draw will avoid TvTs and ZvZs as much as possible.

0 foreigners made it out of the qualifier???
Boring ...
I liked the old systems before welfare ... e.g. 2 people from China, 4 EU, 2 NA, 8 global qualifier (= Koreans)

Goddammit Group D, the Group of Death.

Though Inno/Maru do have significantly better TvT than ByuN.
