Code S group selections took place on Wednesday and it was the usual hectic fun! StatssoOherOaLive had the task of picking first with these the number one seeds! Stats picked himself Trap to join him in Group A soO gave himself a mirror match up with Losira for Group D herO decided to follow suit and gave himself Dear for Group C aLive however, decided to mix things up and picked Classic to join him in Group B
Round 2 picks next, starting with Losira in Group D. He went for a wild swing and picked out Maru ! The earliest he has been picked up in these selections for a very long time! Next Group C and Dear's turn to pick. He went for a Zerg in Rogue to join him. Then came Chintoss' pick for Group B and he went for GuMiho Group A to complete round 2 picks and that was Trap's decision. He picked ByuL!
Final pick round now! It was back to starting with Group A, so before he had chance to get settled in, ByuL was back up picking. He also wasted no time in raising eyebrows as he picked TY! Gumiho's turn for the limelight now as he was picking the last played for Group B, he also decided to go big...picking the robot himself INnoVation Group C and Rogue came up next. He also completed the big 3 terran picks by taking ByuN with him Finally Maru had just Dark left to chose and join him over in a packed Group D
It wasn't over yet though! As Stats with his group currently at Stats-Trap-ByuL-TY, was going to swap any two people. He decided after much deliberation to take TY out of his group and swap him with GuMiho in Group B!
Meaning after a few hours, we had our full Round of 16 set for Season 2 of the GSL!

I think aLive has a strong possibility to get out of his group, if he can TvT his heart out like it's IEM Katowice and WoL. And, don't think he would've picked Classic unless he felt confident in TvP. Then, I haven't been watching many VODs and tournament streams as of late so I'm out of the loop on where these players are currently.
Way too early prediction: Final is going to be ByuL vs soO. soO is going to get there by advancing in first then beating herO and INnoVation. ByuL is making the finals by advancing in first and beating TY and Dark. soO wins in the battle of Kongs.
As much as I'm quite fine with this scenario, I'm not optimistic with it :/
I'm afraid Maru might be able to take a spot (maybe even the first place?) from the tried-to-be Zerg group, his play is very inconsistent, but not as if he were bad anyway. This would only leave one place for soO, Dark, or Losira
By the way, who was the English caster/translator for the group selection? It was very nice to follow, very fluent and dynamic!

The world needs this to happen
It won't, TY/Inno and soO/Dark have to be separated in the bracket.

Group A: Stats/GuMiho
Group B: Classic/aLive
Group C: ByuN/Dear
Group D: Maru/soO
Dang those are some bold predictions. Guessing Dear will be first eliminated from his group, and I have a hard time imagining anyone other than Stats and ByuL getting out of GuMiho's group. I would love to see some upsets though! Good luck!
1. innovation won't survive this group 2. maru won't survive this group 3. if losira wins his first match against soo and maru falls to Dark (very possible), its very likely he can get by on his zvz and zvp until the semis or finals. losira has the easiest path to the finals possible right now 4. stats vs trap should be very competitive. lets also remember that Trap has not lost a televised pvp series since february 5. this is probably one of the most competitive seasons ever in code S and i could be very wrong about predictions. tbh anything can happen in these groups
the hype is so fucking unfathomable and its all totally deserved make sure u guys are liking and su bscribing to all that GSL shit

I'm curious as to why a ton players chose to go with mirror match ups though.
its how u get deep in tournaments like this
tvt he can only build the same shit as you, so thats already a huge sigh of relief. if youre the better player, 9/10 times ur confident in the mirror and will beat a lesser player (esp zvz and tvt)

That's not why at all. Stats picked Trap because Trap was considered the weakest player. Same goes for soO with Losira (ZvZ being soO's strongest matchup doesn't hurt either). Dear is very bad at PvP and now you start to understand the real reasons so many of the early picks resulted in mirror matchups. As for group B, it is favorable for Classic to pick a Terran since there was already a Terran in the group (and GuMiho was one of the weakest players remaining (this also means his practice is more efficient)). Once you get to the last four players it's really a matter of personal preference. Everyone is really good at that point.
why do u think Maru won't survive his group? he got only single matchup to practise, that's much more easier preparations in comparison to zerg foes in this group

Maru might have to play Dark twice. Dark is by far his most difficult opponent in that group.

Whomever you like, sOs will get at least to the semifinal. Well, OK, maybe not. But how will he win BlizzCon in this odd year when he does not win GSL?
I am suprised, how are the relationships in Splyce. When Stats intentionally puts his teammate against Innovation.
Easy road for Maru, very entertaining group for Rogue and group of Death for those three terrans. Poor Classic.
Whatever gaps there might be in skill or current form, Classic & Maru only have to prepare 1 match-up for this round. Should certainly help them. Although Classic is in a group of absolute killers. Losira might be the weakest player of the 8 in question, but he is a wily veteran.

From my understanding it's Abyssal - Ascension to Aiur - Frost - Newkirk - Odyssey - Proxima - Whirlwind, though I may have misunderstood what it says on their site.

Cool, thanks. I just saw on their post and basically said they added 2 new maps AtoA and Odyssey. The rest I have no idea as I can't read Korean. I was hoping they would replace Whirlwind with something else but oh well it is fine I guess.
Again a Group of death for Innovation...will his bad Luck ever end?????? Nevertheless he is used to win, especially when it gets really tough. I rember clearly how he won his last GSL title beating some of his nemesis and surviving the group of death once again. It might seem forlorn this time once more, but I hope for the best. Till the next group nomination the Robot should get some good advice from HerO to turn his fate :-).

Stats is the first seed? And are they doing a roundrobin of 4? As in stats will vs all of the 3 people or at least the winners?
And stats or the first seeds would pick worse players to be in his group or pool?
Can someone give me a grandma explanation of how the pool system works for the B.net tournaments as well as these world gsl hot 6 tournaments?
GSL style groups aren't round robin, it's dual tournament format instead. So each group is basically this tree:
In general you get points for doing well in GSL and the players with the most points are the highest seeded. So yeah in theory you want to pick weak players because it obviously increases your chances of advancing.
savage soo just went for the weakest person and picked losira. i can't believe losira even made it into the RO16 he's still relevant???? or did losira get tons better

He's actually quite good. He beat impact and sOs to get ro16 (not that thats saying much)

Creator, zest, ryung, solar, patience, sOs, keen, major, scarlett, bunny, and trust all went out in ro32. I wouldn't call that weak. You can argue none of them are ro8 material or anything but they're still very strong. I reckon most of them could win a foreigner cup if they transferred over.
I think the issue for Maru with this group is who will help him practice tvz who is as good as the zergs he is facing? Honestly ByuL and Solar are possibly the only ones good enough to give him adequate practice who aren't in his group. Maybe laddering is enough but who knows.

Laddering doesn't ever seem to be enough... or we'd see more foreigners qualified. He's got his work cut out for him.
