Also, GSL vs. the World will offer no WCS points

WTF...

Why?

because it will a kind of invitational thing based on previous result, which means giving points for this would just give more point to people who already have plenty?

I don't really know, just trying to guess...

It is finally good to see the point distribution for this year.

Regional Eligibility Changes for 2017

Japan added to Taiwan/Hong Kong/Macau Region

2016 was in the first year Japanese players were eligible to participate in the WCS. While we appreciate their contributions to the ANZ & Southeast Asia region, we’ve examined the player experience and decided that due to server location it makes sense to home Japan in the Taiwan/Hong Kong/Macau region. We hope this will provide a better experience for all players.

That's a pretty curious change. While the Japanese scene is small (basically (T)PSiArc and (Z)Vaisravana), the Taiwanese scene has also been shrinking a lot. Adding a couple more players would not hurt, plus if it gives them better latency I'm all up for it.
EDIT: guess we're gonna call it the Taiwan/Hong Kong/Macau/Japan region now? Talk about long names.

So is this the WCS 2016 Korea but for foreigners in 2017? 4 events total really?
It was 3 last year but with 3 extra DH, the Gold series, IEM shanghai and wcs copa intercontinental, so 9 events total for wcs points.

Are they gonna announce more tournaments or is that it? Even counting global events it's like 70% of last years circuit prize pool.

This is something that I do not know why it was not discussed more when it was initially announced, the non-Korean world got sliced pretty bad there. While the ammout of seeds that WCS Challenger gives has doubled, the ammout of premier tournaments got decreased a lot. And why yes, one can also plays in all the Korean tournaments, the reality is that not very many players got the income neccesary to make it a reality. That is why last year WCS was so good for foreigners, having multiple opportunities to travel to tournaments, giving exposure to your region and teams that otherwise you would not be able to. Now you have 4 chances this year, good luck with that. The only thing is that Blizzard annouces more WCS circuit events during the year, but by the way the initial annoucement was written it was like there were not gonna be anything more that what was announced. If there are more foreign tournaments, I would expect them to not be part of the WCS circuit, which means no regional qualifiers for players to be able to participate in.

That means 4 global events, right? Much nicer than 2016!

The only global events are IEM Katowice and GSL vs the World.

Last year they had 1 global event, this year they said they wanted more. So they went from 1 to 2, while only 1 of them gives points.

It's quite pathetic.

I think it makes more sense to announce wcs points shortly before first wcs tournament of the year begins.

unhandily to announce the points when the first tournament starts 2-3 months afterwards.

But the first tournament that gave WCS points for 2017 was 2 months ago.

Only one more global which is the showmatch that doesn't give any point. Blizzard is outright ridiculing anyone with their communication regarding globals even if to be fair Katowice looks better than last year KeSPA Cup.

wait , where is DreamHack Open Tours (France) on May 6th to 8th ? It is not a WCS Circuit tournament anymore ? No point granted ?

So I guess there will be no StarCraft at DreamHack Tours ?

I'd have to guess at a smaller tournaments. Huge technical problem twice in a row affecting DH Open and WCS means that it's a logical move.

Well, I did raise precisely this concern in the WCS 2017 Announcement thread, but I suppose quite a lot of people around here couldn't care less what happens to WCS. However, if the foreigner scene is down to 4 major tourney per year it clearly has one two major implications: 1. foreigners that want to stay pros simply don't have many reasons to continue playing starcraft anymore; and 2) Cutting the WCS from 10 (as it were in 2016) to 4 tourneys, WCS simply becomes uninteresting to follow. 4 competitions, what kind of circuit is that? Its such a tremendous failure of keeping an interesting circuit going. In 2016 players were fighting so hard throughout the year to be among the top 8, and it wasn't decided until the very last tourney who would make it. Now this is all gone it seems.

Agreed, when I saw it announced for the first time I was kind of disappointed and was thinking about going back to studies but we will see how this year will look like exactly.
