US has a lot of problems, but it's a superpower with the best military and greatest gross GDP. So, not calling it a developed country would be more of a subjective claim.

Calling US "3rd world" is an obvious nonsense, but that's mainly because it's a Cold War term that doesn't make a lot of sense today (and when it made sense, US was explicitly 1st world for the purpose of this labeling). The question whether it is "developed" is then more complicated one - it is definitely far ahead when it comes to economy, industry etc.. in general most of "hard measures" - the main areas when it is lacking are much harder to qualify and are akin to the "soft skills" that are now so popular in HR. The current state of society in the US just blatantly ignores all developements in inter-personal relations done in Europe in the last century. For some people, it's a good thing, for other, it isn't.

I went to Paris a couple years ago, and Parisians are rude as fuck on the subways. They would trample on a small child just so they don't miss their train.
Mind you, the Parisians we met elsewhere were polite and very kind. They loved it when we tried to speak French, and were warm and welcoming.
No jokes or cliches, just my experience in France.
