EGJD, SKMC. I'm starting to see parallels, and that sucks. I'd really love EG if they'd become competitive again. Currently, they simply aren't (I'm not willing to insult any of the EG hired players - but it's no 2012 level of EG).

the SC2 division was here just because of Naniwa, maybe if another swedish player rise and get very popular they could hire him but anyways he would probably go to EG.

Wow we got a regular Aristotle over here. No shit EG is a business. They are much more a business than an esports organization. Just throwing that out there to those who value loyalty to a scene over $$$$$$$. Alex Garfield doesn't give a shit about the fans, he is just lining his pockets driven by nothing but his thirst for more money. EG has gone from being the ultimate underdog cs team to being the mcdonalds of esports and Alliance is the new Chipotle. Wouldn't be surprised if they even kick Jaedong before he wises up and leaves on his own accord. It was especially annoying when EG was rubbing off on TL for a while. SortOf is the iconic patch zerg to me. The peak of his career was during the BL/infestor heydey and he never came close to recovering after that disappeared. Other players certainly benefited from the patch (Snute was one of the only players who didn't really take full advantage) but SortOf lived and died by it.

Sounds like a player whose organization failed to properly support him in his pursuits as a professional gamer. Not only did he not have any teammates, he was basically sitting in his bedroom without any real direction it sounds like :/. EG curse is real - but its not a curse - its a result of bad business where drama, hype, and big sponsors take the place of practicing hard and unlocking a player's true potential. Thankfully we have a good number of teams that put the game first still. I expect this dude to come back big once he finds a team that believes in him. Sortof fighting!

EG is all in on Dota and LoL. and outside of their NA LCS team they are doing really well in those games, and that NA LoL team will likely be getting some more korean dollars in the future.

In eSports, most teams don't have the funds to "value scene loyalty over $$$." You acknowledge EG is a business, then proceed to get mad at EG for being a business. That's kind of how it works. They didn't give him the best set up, which is not a good business practice. But scene hopping and being smart with its money is why EG has been around for ages.

but it's kind of important to try to help and build the scenes you are a part of rather than come off as a mercenary entity, and that's something EG has always had problems with. once the best times are over--and this happens with every game--it takes the devotion of people who actually feel invested to keep the game going. what would happen to SC in Korea right now if the kespa teams completely left SC2 to focus on LoL? could you ever see TSM pulling out of League? and so forth. there's a happy medium here.

Exactly. EG is deserving of ridicule for the way they conduct business. I assume that everyone is here because they love starcraft and want to see it thrive, maybe even grow. EG doesn't want to be a part of that anymore. I hope Jaedong realizes this sometime soon. I hate seeing his results suffer. He would be much better off on a real starcraft team.

Regardless of how you feel about a team, shrinkage for the gaming community is not good. An example of this is the Destiny tournament: Personally, I think the guy needs a HEPA filter over his mouth but I respect the fact he took the initiative to contribute 4k to a game I want to see grow. I think there needs to be more personalities in this game than players (this is an unfortunate fact, imo). North Americans love shock value; this sometimes supersedes skill level (i.e. Idra in his older years). If you can ever find both, then you are gold. MC is getting there with his funny antics - this is my closest example.

Makes me feel good about my CM QuickFire purchase over Razer Blackwidow.
I probably will be getting a CM Spawn instead of repurchasing Razer Abyssus as well.
Also switching to redbull instead of monster when I want to upset my stomach.

Seriously though, this EG feels completely different from the one that kept Machine around forever because he was "like family". Picking up NA talents like Suppy to boost NA talent pool. Now after dumping their Proleague roster unceremoniously they decide to close down Alliance Sc2?

^SirPinky, I agree with everything about being grateful for any monetary support for sc2 eSport. But I strongly think that for eSports to become legitimate in the public's eye, it needs to reform into something that demands professionalism and is driven by talent/skill.

I just want to friendly reminder: EG placed third at TI4, won I believe 2 of the games at EVO2014, have a very good LoL team and also brand recognition. They may not be invested into SC2 but they do care about winning.

I think Its just that they don't want to dump too much into a contracting game. Also its damn hard to have a successful SC2 team anyway, almost discouraging to even put money into this scene. Axiom still struggles to go very far with their players and arguably they are overall a better team then EG.

You almost have to have connections deep in the Korean underground and pick up 16 year old talent to have a chance at serious success. Whereas you can get a bunch of talented NA and EU players in DOTA2 and get some serious dosh even with 3rd place it was a million bucks IIRC.

If EG wanted too they could probably be the #2 foreign team if they were willing to blow up and go Axiom type buying spree on team less talent but that would be a lot of work and the people who watch EG would be sad all their personalities left so...

Sc2 has a barrier of entry that is hard to overcome. Most people don't know what a 2-base; 7-gate blink all-in is versus Terran, but they do understand when the losing opponent says, "Eat shit, you fuckin' noobie". Most new players would be inquisitive about how a game could make someone so upset. Even when, to the naked eye, it looks like a normal RTS engagement. I think that kind of gameplay helps draw in a new crowd (whether it be positive or negative).

Just remember (if you were around), the biggest boom in tennis was when Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras were around throwing their tennis rackets at each other and cursing at the Refs.

I think Alex Garfield just wants results. And to be the best team in any esports game. Idk why you make that statement. EG does a lot as a team for sc2. It's just the game is not that good anymore to watch.

This just isn't realistic unless you can convince the sponsors that supporting a long time investment into a niche scene is likely to yield future profit. Alex has people he answers to, he's not the king of EG, unless he can justify his investments, he will be get replaced by someone who can.

What would happen in Korea if the teams left Sc2? That seems rather obvious, the Korean scene would disappear.

Less drama please. Closing Alliance SC2 devision? Are you serious? There were never an Alliance SC2 devision to start things off. It was a personal Naniwa sponsoriship. SorOf fell of the scene years ago. In fact, in the times he was signed he already didn't have any results for ages. so him leaving (or being kicked) doesnt mean anything. It all ("Alliance SC2 devision") lost any sense when Nani retired.
Less is more.
