The first day of IEM Cologne saw MC, mYi.StarDust, Ai.Patience, and ROCCAT.HyuN make it through the open bracket and qualify for the Ro16 group stage of the tournament. While other notable players like San, Leenock, viOlet, TLO, and Grubby also competed in the open bracket, they were unable to make it to the next round.

Patience was really impressive today
|
Such a stacked tournament, Group A is insanely scary!
|
Looking forward to some great games!
Group B should be very interesting to see how jjakji fares. Qxc took a really hard draw on that one though :o
Hoping for HerO, ForGG, Jjakji, Dear, Polt, Jaedong, Inno and MC!
|
Group A GoD IMO.
Other groups you can say with almost 100% certainty QXC Mana and Heromarine will not advance. Group A is a total toss up, all super good players.
|
Sucks it's sold out. But yeah, looks good apart from a bit too many protoss. Will be a good tourney though!
|
3 protoss. ....
Patience seemed to have quite the run. Who is he

Ex-Prime, Ex-Azubu Protoss who had a really good run through the online DH:W qualifiers. He finished in the offline event as well.
for future reference, Liquipedia is your friend.

Every group looks pretty stacked; Mana and HeroMarine will have quite the tough time as well.
Would love to see some foreigner(s) in Ro8 though!

Well, one of them is MC.
Patience is a Korean Protoss player.. he's been showing up more and more lately, had a few good runs in last couple of tourneys he played in too.

3 foreigners...
Go qxc! American Hope!
|
Wow the round of 16 is super stacked, like every group has at least 3 really good players in it. and props to hasuobs for some nice results 2-0 san?! sick. to bad he didn't advance would have been a great storyline.

I don't see heromarine having a realistic shot; I might just not know enough about the player though. I feel like inno and MC are just full out locks there.
Mana and stardust are both fully capable of winning Bo3's against Jaedong or Polt IMO.
As stated above, foreigner hope = Polt :D

Patience and Stardust played phenomenally today.
|
Have a feeling Classic will do really well.

Nooo Miniraser

Hmm. jjakji's group just got a lot harder, but I still believe 2014 to be the year of jjakji. come on and get the momentum rolling for you by winning IEM!

disappointed that San wasn't able to make it out of the open bracket. Hopefully he plays better for WCS EU

There are just enough protoss players to make round of 8 4 x (PvP)

JockG is going to win Cologne and Katowice. His mech play is SOLID.

Inno to win it would be amazing Polt or Jjakji would be cool aswell

If InNoVation fails to advance from groupstage, i won't be surprised if he switches to WCS EU next season.
Rain, HerO Dear and Patience StarDust and Jaedong InNoVation and Classic
Rain > JD Dear > Classic StarDust > HerO InNoVation > Patience
Rain < Dear StarDust < InNoVation
And then spirit of old Bogus comes back, brings STX SouL flag with him and 4-0'd Dear to settle up new era of domination.
|
As much as I would love one of the foreigners advance I dont see it happening with the tournament being that stacked.
Group A is my group of Death whereas after seeing Patience play so well today I am rooting for him in this tournament and will watch group B closely.
I predict: Rain Hyun Patience Dear Jaedong Polt MC Innovation
with MC winning the whole thing.
|
rofl, watching the event today I actually thought that it was the event itself.. you know - the lower brackets or sth.. Then I heard the casters say that these were the "open bracket" qualifiers.. I was like - OK, if these are qualifiers, then who is in the finals already ??
Then they showed the groups, and I was like - O.M.G.
And so was Hyun
Awesome event, awesome players though.. Groups are more stacked than CodeS perhaps..
===================================================================
EDIT: I have one more question: which HerO ??
EDIT again: Though I like this guy a lot and his play.. For this particular event - kinda wish it was the other..

The lesser hero: HerO

These are really good groups.I just hope for a non PvP finals!

Yeah, I know, later when I saw the OP
At the live event every player was typed in all-caps.. Didn't read the OP cause I thought there wasn't the need Didn't see HerO there either cause I was mainly watching the other group instead and near the end..

LOL. Innovation's TvP right now is just horrible. Can't hold off early pressure at all. This is very wishful thinking.
Jjakji is by far the best Terran in the world right now. No way he doesn't advance out of his group. And the way Patience is playing he just might beat out Dear for that final spot.

Yes the lesser HERO unfortunately. It would've been awesome to see herO go for the 3-peat but oh well, I'll just have to wait to root him on for the 100k championship!
gogogo CJ_herO !

What's that weird dark red squiggly symbol next to the names of those two players? Is it some kind of glitch?

It's a new race. I think it's a balanced version of Protoss.
|
Don't really expect StarDust and Jjakji to have much trouble getting out of their groups. Jjakji in 1st, Stardust could go down to JD and come out in 2nd. Everyone tends to underestimate StarDust still I think. But then again, that could just be my bias talking :D
|
Surprised to see that Patience made it he looked really off in the WCS EU Qualifier.
|
"power of protoss" this , "power of protoss" that... all i hear is "power of protoss" ! FFS people...
are we not watching the same games? i've bearly see any protoss to win a game straight up , without him to make a crazy / risky /unbelievable moove !

3 foreigners remaining, I predict none of them will make it out of the group stage... MaNa has the best chance if he's still playing good, but still...
Koreans and Protoss so strong! Koreans rightfully so, Protoss is up for debate! :D

How can someone who recently 4:0'ed Dear can get 2:0'ed by HasuObs? How is this game so volatile?

HeroMarine is 16. I will be cheering him on hardcore. He is so talented. I think he and MC will advance.

I predict 8 protoss in quarters

Group A is a group of death. Group B QXC is a gimme. Hope Mana and Heromarine can pull off some games.

Bold prediction.

Hopefully Heromarine has been practicing mega hard, I could see him taking some games in his group. Mana doesn't have a chance unfortunately.
Patience looked god damn brilliant today, I'll be rooting him on to advance. Surprised everyone is off the Jaedong bandwagon already, his fan boys are nowhere to be found these days.
|
Oh wow, more than 2 Terrans, and one of them is Polt! I was thinking realistically the only foreigner who had a chance at making the RO8 was Mana and initially thought it sucked that he got such a stacked group. I then looked at the other groups and realised just how stacked this whole tournament is, looking forward to some great games.

It could just be me but StarDust looks to be in awesome form lately, I can't really not seem him making out of his group based on form

StarDust is really onfire lately. Top4 ASUSROG, winning the IEM Finals qualifier... I think he's a strong contender here.

I think Group B is going to be the group of death, more so than group A..
