Hi guys I am HTOMario and I am leaving starcraft.
I've been playing starcraft since I was 8 years old. I am almost 24 now and I have loved every minute of it. I shared my passion for starcraft with my wife who I have been married to for close to 4 years now. We watch blizzcons together and stay up late to watch WCS we love every piece of it. She's into zerg <.<
On october 2010 I was watching some tournament and I said wow, what I wouldn't do to play on stage and win just once. My wife Melayna told me I was quitting my job and practicing the following morning. So incredibly supportive and really was the only person in my family to believe in what I felt was reaching at straws for me.
Over the years I've played every race to high gm and truly developed a love for mechanical units. Eventually I only played mech and eventually wound up through echo(awesome people) who told me to take LYGF's offer when they approached me. Everything truly was great and they honestly did pay everyone every month, sometimes a little later but it came through. Yesterday was the 5th, normally I get payed every 5th and this would be the second time I wasn't (my salary wasn't being paid anymore). There was some recent drama in the team with some players and overall LYGF was becoming a source of stress for me.
It's my understanding that the "new" sponsor, who also is sponsoring the February 8th tournament wasn't paying us at all. I guess something struck me when I realized that everything is going forward and we're getting more and more people but we have no finances anymore? Running tournaments with no income for the prize? Besides sc2replaystats.com/ these guys to my knowledge paid on time every time and the owner is super fucking awesome. (only sponsor who I 100% know did)
To my knowledge genius has been paid but I don't know the details on that and I've heard that a few other players were in the same boat I was.
This morning I decided to cut the stress from my life and left LYGF. Moments after doing so I qued for another game and I questioned why I even play anymore. To be honest I already felt I accomplished more then I ever could. It may not seem like much in comparison to jeadong but I was happpy even getting GM, making guides, getting pretty far in WCS tournaments but I must say the best day of my entire attempt was day 9 casting me. I was so happy that day9 recognized me. (The part where he said you know this CC is greedy!) My wife and I busted out laughing because as I placed it on his stream I told her, man I think that CC was too greedy this game) All though I loved husky and HD casting me and it was really cool! I've followed day9 for as long as I can remember. He was/is kind of my e sports hero so it meant the world to me.
I have 2 children now. Jaymi who is 2 and Jordan who is almost 7 months. I think I got what I wanted from starcraft and I really feel I gave my best. Some days practicing up to 16 hours a day but very regularly playing 10+ most days of the week. Not many people can say they got to really try to go for their dream or have the support to do so. Now after nearly 4 years I've decided that it's time to move on with my life and dedicate the next years to my family.
I know a lot of people didn't like me, sometimes I could be a huge ass. Luckily I mostly grew out of that and devoted more time to helping and teaching people my passion.
Hope I didn't make anyone fall asleep. I just wanted to share my story before I fade away. Now that I typed this out I think I wanted to type out a good bye to starcraft for myself more then to share the actual story. ^ Maybe you'll see me in a custom game now and then as I'm not 100% done playing starcraft, but it would only be to kill a few minutes now and then.

Just wanted to make sure this was public knowledge. I did a few quick searches here but couldn't see anything about it.
HTO Mario was one of the few that dared to push the boundaries of mech back when everyone else was just going bio every game. It's always sad to see an innovative player leave the game, but it's good to see that he has a positive view of what he is doing.
..... "retire"? From what? He is a casual player... and he never pushed boundries! Ladder on NA and everyone else has been doing mech long before Mario.

Pretty sure Major got in. And I don't know if this is true or not but he boosted the protoss player desrow's? account to gm in kr.

I'm pretty sure Iaguz has made it, but if players like state or snute can make top 25 or whatever, there have got to be foreign terrans who have made it too. I bet Lucifron, Kas, maybe even Qxc, have all made it at some point in their careers.

Don't know if he ever reached KR GM in any way, but he was like top 10-20 of all masters KR last time I checked, so he was really really close, and he didn't stop improving. He was able to get that good while also spending so much time contributing to the community and not just focusing purely on his self-gain, while also playing many styles of mech, meaning he had to figure a lot of things out on his own instead of learning from others or just focusing on standard bio.
He made a lot of guides, videos, even posted on the terrible Bnet forums to help out, and shared a lot of replays and streamed with commentary. He contributed a lot to the community. It's sad that he's quitting SC2 (but it's cool that he's not 100% quitting) but I'm happy that he is thankful for the last few years. Sounds like he has an amazing family. He didn't get to play on the big stage but he qualified for WCS and he's had more than I'd ask for and achieved more than 99.9% of SC2 players.

Best of luck to him in the future. I studied his replay packs quite a bit back when TvP was pissing me off and I started getting interested in Mech. Sure, he wasn't a pro player or anything but he still contributed a lot to the mech threads on the forum and sharing his knowledge of it along with replays, which a mid level player like me found helpful at the time.

Jinro did it in WoL, iirc it was on the Jedi Mind Tricks account or some other alternate acc.

Yeah lol I'd like to see some of these haters play on a professional gaming team and have their own LP page. Sry kids but Mario has accomplished more in this game than you ever will, even though he wasn't a top pro or known figure. =)

If you browse TL regularly (sc2 sub forum) you could very well have no clue who he is unless you go out of your way to look up specifics. Calling people idiotic because they don't devote as much time as he did into making content, to find it is..well, yeah.
I don't know who he is, can't really say I care either, it sounds like some people benefited from his content which is great, it's more than the average or even most people do for the community, but he's not exactly someone people should be familiar with on name alone.

I realize the goal of your post was to point out that everyone should play nice and such, but when you add that stuff into it...You're not really following your own intentions. What he accomplished was great on a personal level, but he spent 4 years doing it. There were plenty of gamers attending university that accomplished what he did without investing 4 years.
Will refrain from derailing thread any further (or looking at it all together), but might want to look into being polite and respectful, if that's what you want others to do.
Sad to see him retire, but as far as retirement posts go, this one was almost uplifting. He's reached his goals, had a lot of fun, and is ready to move on. That's pretty cool.

As for the people in this thread, the behaviour of some people is disgraceful. I'm sure you'd go to a funeral and start shouting at the speaker for saying good things about the deceased. You can clearly see from Reddit and TL posts that the person was well known and appreciated in the community, so your rude disparaging posts are only a sign of your own ignorance.

The only thing u can say is that he has not been in KR GM with this account, but players tend to have multiple... He only has ~200 games on this. If u are clever enough to find out what league he was in, u should also look how many games have been played so far.
The one stream I would watch just to see mech work when I failed. Sad to see you go, best of luck dedicating your life to your family.
(also sad to see so many negative posts, I really love HTOMario for choosing to play mech only even when he reached GM with bio before. His passion for the game and his love for mech would keep me interested in SCII especially his mech vs korean GM protoss which tbh didn't work out most times but it was VERY entertaining non the less.)
I never really followed you a huge amount especially after I stopped playing SC2. Infact I somehow almost got you mixed up with avilo for but good luck to you and your family for your future and I hope you find a career you can be passionate about and enjoy as much as you enjoyed gaming!
He might have not been super known but, he was an amazing player and a Pioneer of mech. It breaks my heart to see him go you will be sorely missed Mario!

You can't say "some super cool Terran guy who does mech is retiring!" And expect the whole world of people not particularly following him to not say "who?" At least put some added info into the OP (he was a content creator, this is a link to his work, these are his accomplishments/contributions, etc)
Anyone who is angry about people asking "who is this Mario guy?" Needs to get off their high horse and either explain who Mario is or don't say anything at all, because those people are trying to find out who Mario is and why there is a thread about him retiring!
I honestly don't care that he's retiring, and I know that Mario would know that a lot of people won't notice his retirement, but now that I know who he is, (no thx to the people crying) I can finally make my response which is "sad to see another community contributor go, best of luck to you sir". Not that he helped me at all, since I didn't know who he was, but he helped some people, and helping the community is essential in the expansion of eSports.

Actually, this is something everyone who read the LYGF news noticed. It was explained that their "head sponsor" was a private source that did not want to be named. Everyone was suspicious of it. Everyone said "welp, I hope this doesn't fuck over a lot of surviving Koreans!", or "hope this actually works out!"
LYGF hasn't screwed anyone over yet though. In this case, a casual player didn't want to be overly committed to a financial source that was unreliable, so he quit ahead of time. That doesn't mean LYGF has fallen apart and their world is crumbling. It's possible that that might happen (and I'm a skeptic, so I've always thought that was going to happen), but one should not openly assume and start spreading rumors across the internet quite yet.
Some of you guys are assholes. He's retiring from a game he lived and breathed since he was 8. Now has a family and wants to devote his free time to them, and being a father of a 9 month baby boy, i completely understand. GL Mario, <('.')>

Well, your question implies that Mario was the best mech player, not the case, it's subjective , some will question this affirmation, anyway, right now, the only known remaining foreign mech players are Avilo and Goody, that many they are. As for koreans, no names comes up in my mind, they are slowly pushing into mech at least in TvZ.
Mario played some funky mech, was good some of the stuff he could pull off. Mechanically not particularly strong for a GM player but had some smart plays. GL dude, hopefully you will still be gaming when the next big RTS comes out.

I´d say Strelok is the best foreign mech player, that plays mech relatively consitently. Ofc top terrans like Happy, Heromarine, MajOr, Dayshi or Kas are possibly better, but there are not as linked to the style as others are. That being said, both Strelok and GoOdy are still a lot better than avilo is and than Mario was.
But back to topic, it´s always sad to see a community member leave, especially given the circumstances. I personally did´nt know Mario that well, but I knew of his existence and that he was quite important for a lot of people. Best of luck to you and your family Mario!

i think he meant casual in that mario doesn't (well, didn't) compete in a whole lot of tournaments as opposed to being more of a streaming presence.

They attached it now, it is in german, but I think you get the basics out of it anyway. Bails was payed via paypal, but really late on both of the listed months (24.11, 18.10) When did Bails leave? Anybody have a source maybe?
HTOMarios last payment dates from the 03.01., the other payments, as you can see on the pics are much later into the month. They payer is Anton Pascal, the CEO of LYGF. There is an interview with him and Mori, a german caster: (it is only in german though) The stuff he says about LYGF is rather weird, espcially the part about their Investor, aswell as his opinion about most of the players in EU and NA GM. He claims that he isnt interested in most of them, even if they reach top 30 constantly in GM, but rather goes for koreans directly. I wonder why they contracted players like HTOMario in the first place?
Anyways, the proof LYGF provided here seems legit so far, but it is still rather worrysome, that all bot one payments were serverly delayed and we don't even know if they were payed in full, as the exact amount of money is blacked out.

He might have been better than avilo, but I´m fairly sure, that he was not the best mech player out there. I mean accodring to Aligulac, GoOdy for example has 250 points more and roughly 1000 times his earnings.
