A series of tweets from Mousesports management have confirmed that (T)LucifroN is no longer an active player and will be returning to his studies. As of now, the length of his break is indefinite, and may effectively be retirement.

damn, there goes another good terran player... though he hasn't been as active on the scene lately (active/sucessful), pains me to see another terran go

Heard it yesterday on Propcasten which Wake was a part of. Made me a bit sad, but it probably ain't easy to play well when you're not motivated and want to do something else. Gl Luci!

No surprise, he declined the invitation in Nation Wars because he had some finals and he needs to study them. He was a good Terran in Europe.

I'm sad, he was my favorite Terran in EU, but the few times I had the chance to watch him play fpr the last few months, he really did look lackluster. I hope Heromarine fills the spot now

hmm I think maybe it was for the best tbh. He had a good period of time where he was hyped and had ok results but I doubt they matched the hype or his expectations(assuming he's aiming for the top). Considering the career of a progamer is short, taking a break, getting or continuing an education then coming back afterwards(if he wants) is a wise idea. Best of luck LucifroN!

Hype from foreigner fans and casters, notably, Mr. Bitter just crushed him. The weight of hype and expectations seemed too much for him and just crushed him to the point where he would just utterly fail at every offline event.

Casters never let the lucifron hype train grow naturally from results like say a scarlett, instead the casters just hyped him as a favourite at every event he went to. All those failures probably took a toll on his mindset causing his leave of absence you see today.

I will never forget the first time I took notice of the lucifron hype train as before this match I never really paid much attention to it. It was during one of those small 8 player dh invitationals. Can't remember which one, but I think it was dh valencia. Lucifron was facing DRG at his beastly peak when DRG was wrecking gstl and stuff. The casters were hyping lucifron so much this tourney and were predicting him to win it all and that he would beat DRG. DRG proceeded to 2-0 lucifron in 2 very one sided bops. From that point on I knew the lucifron hype was mainly a caster manifestation and totally undeserved. Kept waiting for him to prove me wrong, but he never did.

Man, and 2014's only 11 days long. That was a quick falling apart

That aside, I'm sure we'll see him again. I think we'll see him again.

It's also b/c he had massive potential dating back to WC3. Hard to go under-the-radar when even fellow programers peg you as the person to watch out for.

I guess foreigners that want to take a year off going fulltime need to spend the first months of that in Korea. They can't funnel the additional time to get significantly better by playing on EU ladder to give them better tournament results, work ethic or no.

i was a county award winning athlete in high school - and got multiple scholarships to play in division 1 level college programs. My mom made sure that I made straight a's and even after college pursued a higher level of education. always have something to fall back on, because sports (including esports) can take a sudden change in direction (for example you might get injured), and at least you have a secondary plan to support yourself

I always support taking a break to resume studies and accomplish an important milestone in life like your education. I really hope more and more pro gamers continue to value education, while still owning everyone in their perspective games

as a former war3 player myself, i must say i'm very proud of Lucifron and the effect he has had on Starcraft 2. It's great to see war3 players transition successfully

good luck and hope to see you back!

I don't know much about him but the subject does come up often and it does make me wonder how well you could juggle both. Are there any top tier gamers who win cash tournies in any game, SCII, Dota 2 or whatever, who are also full time students on campus and not just taking some online classes?

Farewell Lucifron, you were the best terran EU and we'll miss you.

So, who will be the new foreign Terran hope EU?
Thorzain doesn't seem to be at his top form right now. Dayshi has switched to random. Maybe Uthermal will show some good games? Oh let's not forget about Happy who was so good lately

Polt I guess?

I always thought Lucifron was good but maybe a bit too overhyped. Also never forget the Thor drop.

It's less about skill and more about whether there is any money they can significantly earn. Non-koreans barely earn enough to make it a full time job.

I think lots of young Korean pros go to some kind of school which is just incredibly throwaway that they only do for the sake of doing it and to have at least some form of back up.

Nerchio has from the beginning been studying and playing "professional" on the side, and he has for a long time been a top tier player, but then again he is one of few exceptions (some already mentioned above). But it is rare that it works out

i can really understand hi decision and Motivation. For quite some time he was one of the best of his Kind (terran) in the foreign world. Still not enough to make enough Money out of the game. Very sad imo. Starcraft community is too small. dang.

Foreigners can be so inconsistent with their performance. Naniwa and Stephano while he was playing were the only foreigners you could really count on. Can't blame the guy for prioritizing school.

Very expected. He has far since fallen from grace and hasn't done anything lately, so good on him not to prong the inevitable since he has been doing not very good lately.

GL to him though.

Shame, guy had some talent. Strange that he looked better at the end of WoL and not playing fulltime.

Good luck with whatever he chooses to do

There is no hope.

Shame about Lucifron though. Everyone kept on over-hyping him, and set the bar too high for him. From then on, he could rarely meet that expectation. Good luck Lucifron

This also is an interesting change for Mouz. They've finally picked up their first Korean in Dear, and now Mana and hOpe are released, and Lucifron is likely retiring. Changes upcoming for this team

I think what broke him was his result against Tlo where losing meant not going the global final of wcs. Tlo said he basicly had no chance against him and cheesed every game.

He did not cheese every game. He played a six pool once and his other wins were fast mutas against hellbat drops and roach nydus vs mass hellions. So game 3 was just good decision making and solid play, while game 4 was a build order win mostly.
On topic, sad to see Luci go. I guess his best timing window for a comeback might be in Lotv Beta but I wouldn`t be surprised if he just reamains a hobby player for now.

The reason why he was hyped is because for a long time he was one of the very very few really good Terrans in the foreign scene. It is also the reason why HeroMarine gets so much support nowadays (even though the real foreign Terran hero is Happy).

Also, in 2013 alone (despite his horrible post-hellbat performances), he was still the 6th highest earning foreigner.

@Mikkmagro: yep, if anything the hype was justified for the first few months of Hots. During that period he looked like the total package: solid mechanics, very good engagements and the ability to play a variety of builds, from cheese to turtle mech. Later on, his skill slowly declined. I guess his inability to break out of the ro8s hit him mentally.

How unfortunate is this I hope he comes back soon without the pressure of pursuing it fulltime. I strongly believe he really showed championship form at times, but he was a little bit unlucky when it mattered the most, facing in most of the big tournaments the final winners and being defeated by small margins. I don't think he was that overhyped, it's true that he didn't win any big tournament this year (any foreigner did that after all), but the sample is quite small though. He instead crushed the Ladder constantly, most of the big names feared him for a long time, wanting to avoid him. He played really well in all the team leagues and online tournaments (winning some), and did some decent results overall speaking, constantly being in the top 10-15 in Aligulac rankings and reaching and holding the 1800+ rating along months which is IMPRESSIVE compared to the whole foreigner scene.

It's true that I also expected him to shine by winning a big tournament this year. That didn't happen, but it's not a real dissapointment, I've always believed that he can fight with the koreans face to face, but he needed more time... 1 year has been insuficient. Anyways, I wish him good luck with studies, and after all the effort, some time off is always good. I'm sure he will come back even stronger when he recover his eager to compete, and he will shine again as one of the best foreigners.

Keep fighting Pedro!

I think that Lucifron's hype was actualized, at least in WoL. He was so good, especially if you remember back to his games in WCS EU (that match vs. Stephano, what a great game). I think that foreigner Terrans in general are struggling and that he must have hit a mental block or something after hellbats were nerfed. He played really well in 2012 and early 2013, but it's unfortunate that he never got to end at the same level he started the year at.

Gl to you in school, Lucifron. It's best to stop when you're ahead and go back to school to get a more stable career.

He played like a Korean Terran when he was not hyped. He played like a full foreigner when he was hyped. He is still the most succesfull Terran foreigner.

Smart play from an excellent Terran. Similar to how Stephano left after he admitted that Zerg was OP as shit and no longer is so, I'm sure Lucifron understands that Terran is going to be ignored by Blizzard for the foreseeable future.

I really enjoyed his games, he was one of the only foreign Terrans that I ever got a feeling might gain some traction. Sad to see him go. To those that call him all hype, you didn't watch his games, only his results (which just like all foreign Terrans, were not Terribly impressive). His games however, from a Terran perspective, were quite excellent.

I think his timing on leaving the game further shows how smart he is in tactics. Good luck bra!

Luci was probably a better player than ThorZaIN in his prime compared to ThorZaIN's prime, but ThorZaIN won 2 premier's so I don't think Luci is the most successful. I do think he and Happy's had the most solid play though.
