Kespa Chairman announced at the G-Star Festival that Prime, MVP, IM and Najin joined Kespa.
He also talked about the Next Generation E-Sports Action plan with two stages.
1. Stage: Is to open the door for every party who wants to join in E-Sports activities 2. Stage: Improvement of System and different System plans are the key factor. The Korean Sports Council will hold a meeting in January 2014 and Kespa will apply to become a formal member. (Something with the Iesf and Kespa to face better issues and strengthen esports interests)
On December 28th the SC2 Proleague will start with eight teams Prime, IM, MVP Hotsix, SKT, KT, Samsung, CJ Entus and Green Wings.
Together with Proleague and LoL World Cup participating Teams and Players we will open a "Kespa Shop" as a matching and different Revenue Model. (Details about financing the costs of the shop, the initial costs will be paid by Kespa)
Kespa Chairman said Busan is besides the Movie and Baseball festvial city will also be the Game Festival City. The recent Game regulations policys is because of stagnating Korean games companies. In this Situation the large game companies should be a supportive elder brother.
(The korean companies should try to react reasonably) in the wake of G-Star this should be a restoration period for the korean game companies.
dont see a thread on this yet, so might as well. hopefully we can see those teams play in proleague

yay for another sc2 proleague, pl is one of the few sc2 tournaments I watch, also I think this confirms that there will def be a LoL proleague soon since I don't see why Najin would join kespa unless they want to get into sc2
not surprising. We knew this or rather heard lots of rumours about it from a while back. I believe the prime coach mentioned it in an interview as well. Still, maybe they'll have more success with sponsors
I have a feeling that MVP will pick up one of the new small LoL teams like NB or Dark, and then they will make some Hybrid Proleague with LoL and SC2 in the future, I know a lot of people would not be happy with that since they dislike LoL but I think it would be good for SC2 to try and get some of LoLs viewers, I also enjoy watching both games and would be cool since it wouldn't have the problems of the BW/SC2 league with players practicing 2 games

I don't think it will be a real hybrid league but they will probably have the 2 leagues played on the same day. First sc2 and then lol at the prime time slot. Maybe some league fans will be in the audience for sc2, cause they wanna have seats for lol (lol). Whatever, i am looking forward to proleague, even without JD
Expected this since the moment those teams left ESF and I couldn't be happier. I miss seeing IM and MVP in the team leagues, super hyped to see them in proleague!
I thought WJS players would still find a way to join the proleague...
btw, i really hope(i knew it's quite impossible) that they could just merge GSTL and SPL together into one team league, that would be the greatest starcraft 2 team league ever...

I want this too. The other option I would like is if KeSPA/ESF teams all play in proleague and they also play in GSTL; with both leagues not coinciding with each other..

Not "some" LoL team. It's the team that Reach founded and coaches. It got top 4 at Worlds and was the only team that came even close to beating SK Telecom. A very big name in Korean League.

Well, you cannot really participate in team league when your team is pretty much personal sponsorship for couple of players with paid coach and rented team house (do they still have it btw ?). SouL got screwed hard though, but even they apparently look for foreign teams/personal sponsorships too.

Still Prime will participate somehow..
They have more than 2 players. Notably more. It's just Gerrard never sending out anyone but Creator, Maru, MKP (RIP) and ByuN :D
not sure what to think of that... I guess I could finally see MVP and IM again, but it's going to be the proleague production hell with casters I don't know at times I can't watch... Not to mention that hardly any of the best players will play there. It's like Maru... and that's it for the very top players, right?
All I was saying is that KeSPA should've helped to establish some form of collaboration between different teams to keep its star players.
Something like Acer + SouL for PL, or have Soulkey/sOs play as mercenaries for Prime. Still hope to see something like this announced till the start of the season.
Man people really laying on Prime. They deserve it after their terrible performance last GSTL but I wouldn't be surprised if the new players and an ACE in the form of Maru makes them of one of the best teams this proleague season.
Creator has been streaming a lot so I'm hopeful he got over the HOTS transition. Byun might just be a lost cause at this point when he was doing so well all killing Azubu last GSTL right off the bat.

When will ESF and KESPA realize that the only way to bring stability to the Korean scene is through a big combined proleague where players are able to play every week. I mean it's great that proleague is starting again, but in order for there to be a "best player" in the world there needs to be other than the over-stacked GSL/WCS, where the few who make it to the higher rounds can be easily knocked out by the next guy, because the tournaments so hard everyone is too good. In a proleague all the players play every week, so we can really see who can show us consistency week after week in proleague rather than who gets knocked out last in the GSL rat race. If you look at Flash's tournament results you will just see a low tier code S player, so we just see another low-tier code S player, but he showed consistency week after week in Proleague, earning himself the number one in wins, so we can still he is the same flash from BW.
Now imagine a proleague with all ESF and Kespa teams and all the small teams paired up Prime MVP IM CJ_Entus KT_Rolster SKT_T1 Samsung_Khan Jin Air fou+WJS Azubu+Soul Startale Team Epic EG-TL
That looks pretty good doesn't it, now imagine if that were reality

However, playing with a 6-man roster isn't great for a team. They'll need one or two more players with at least a minimal chance to beat mediocre to good PL players. I don't doubt that they have a few rookies accessible, but can those win games? If not, all their players are essentially locked in Korea for the PL season.

I think they can win some games vs rookies, especially when for example Jin Air do not have a roster better then Prime's one (Only 6 players up to now!!).

Maybe it is because there is NOTHING in Korea and I see only KeSPA rookie players owning weekly events. There were some online prelims for DH and IEM but nobody counts these results.
And Top 1 player is the player who has managed to overcome insane Code B and Code A to be here. There are about dozens of korean players who can do the same they just have no chance and luck.
KeSPA shop? Does this mean we finally have a consistent, official way to obtain team merchandise, or am I mistaking what they mean by "shop?" I'd really like some KT Rolster gear.
You guys means ST/fou should stop being amateur and join KeSPA. 3 teams have realized where the future lies. Its not an issue of merging or not merging lol

Noone doubts that the korean players not on the list are also exeptionally strong and that there are too less tournements most of KeSPA players can go to, which makes that "ELO List" more a experience*skill list. But its a point for the fans. Those 10 Players have lots of Fans. And without them PL must fight for viewer counts. I hope many people which watch it regularly. I love watching Proleague for many many year, I hope it will exist many years longer.

Good to hear that Proleague is back, but I just hope they manage to bring back some of the star players (Jaedong back to JinAri, maybe some sort of partnership with SouL / Stars / Acer..)
There are more good players than the ones he listed joining
Innovation/Trap/Dear/Soulkey/sOs/Jaedong are all easily in top10 best players right now.

I am so looking forward to the next season of PL. Last season was, simply put, the greatest sc2 event for me yet (though it's almost unfair to call it a single event due to the length, I guess that's the power). I love the team format, and getting a chance to see new maps, new players and so many prepared strategies.

Seeing as CJ-players tried to qualify for Dreamhack Winter online, I don't think they're as steadfast on keeping their pros from travelling.

Why would that be relevant? It's not like Dota 2 is popular in Korea or anything.

That basically just happened, except for Startale. eSF is just 4 teams now, of which 3 don't really have any sponsors. SouL just left PL - if they had an opportunity to participate, they would've stayed.
And Axion-Acer (not eSF) apparently don't want to commit to Proleague, as their players are participating a lot in foreign tournaments and WCS AM/EU

They were pretty much the only non-KeSPA team that was able to compete with the KeSPA organizations after MVP sold both their teams and coaches to Samsung, but that's obviously not the case anymore now that they're KeSPA, too. Short summary for you, hope it helps out a bit.
Something should probably be put in the OP since a lot of people keep wondering about that.

It has more to do with the fact that KeSPA weren't ready to switch/support the game in the early stages because of the legal battle with Blizzard et la. You didn't really have a choice as a Korean if you wanted to play SC2.

I don't think they're gonna drop it, but it's certainly more beneficial to get a LoL team than a Dota2 team. If they cannot afford all 3 games, it's possible that they will drop dota2 team, considering their dota2 team is not a top team and only get picked up one month ago anyway.

Ah, it was more of a question of KeSPA not wanting to associate with DotA 2 because they have a relationship with RIOT. I have some misconception that KeSPA is some nazi org that likes to control all the teams and what they play. Just want to verify if it was true or not.

Unlike other countries Korea does not have a contract with riot making it so no other moba can be played in the same tournament. Don't quote me on this but I don't think any DoTA teams will be dropped unless DoTA is unable to gain popularity in Korea.

We've yet to see Kal play and there are a few players on Prime that have been performing okay in online qualifiers and the like. Unless a miracle happens they won't win the season, but if they take it more seriously and don't send players overseas for tournaments I could see them performing at least as well (haha) as EGTL.

It would be rough for Prime indeed, but they could use this season to develop new talent. Traditional sports teams have "rebuilding seasons" all the time. Better late than never, right?

I wonder where Soulkarp and sOs will end up. With their success, the sky is the limit, really, as long as they don´t get too greedy. Prime surely could use some help, if only they had the money for it.
I´m afraid though, my excitement has to wait for the casters to be announced.
Great to see a proleague coming up again. Even after the merging lots of talent left out of it though but i guess you'll always have this. Still I would have liked to see a EGTL. Soul, WJS and Startale are unfortunately missing too leaving out quite some top players. I wouldn't be surprised if the PL players just become the top though, such regular high level matches is the best training scheme there is, though a funky mappool plus knowing your opponents so well could lead to some weird PL only metagaming.

Yes, it is an accomplishment, but the fact that he couldn´t make a splash in boX series so far also speaks volumes. That said, I am absolutely sure Flash has it in him to become an absolute top terran as he has already shown many excellent games. Lets see what the mech buff does for him.

Um.... Maru, Bunny, Keen, Byun, Yoda, TY, maybe Fantasy all roughly as good or better than Flash...
maybe flash form as we have seen .. but people seem to disregard the fact the he has the most kills in proleague .. that is no joke TBH .. if you are just a korean terran you cant just score that many kills without real talent
Yes, it is an accomplishment, but the fact that he couldn´t make a splash in boX series so far also speaks volumes. That said, I am absolutely sure Flash has it in him to become an absolute top terran as he has already shown many excellent games. Lets see what the mech buff does for him.
He doesn't have to prove himself in BoX series yet if he's to become the Sea of SC2 first ^^. Wait until he wins like 2 PL seasons.

So more uniformity in structure should probably help SC2 get popular in Korea, right? I mean, like BW was. I'm sure it's 51/49 Blizzard, but still. It WILL help -- even if its not as big as BW.
AGAIN, to reiterate, having uniformity over there will help some, not a lot because it's up to Blizzard to make good changes, etc.

Blizzard needs to make Sc2 free to play if they want to make it even come close to brood war or even league of legends levels.
So Proleague finally found a way how to continue being irrelevant in SC2! In the last season, they played mainly with the old BW pool, leaving half of the (then) top players out. Now, as their players started to really shine, it seems that they got rid of enough of them to still keep half of the (current) top players out ...

To be fair, SC2 is going f2p soon in patch 2.1, with the exception of campaign and 1v1 matchmaking. All custom game maps and arcade maps will be free to Starter Edition users, and team game and FFA matchmaking will be easily available with spawning. And all races will be unlocked.
However, I've been hearing that SC2 has been f2p in Korean PC Bangs for a while now.

Blizzard needs to make a game that people actually want to play.

If a tournament is irrelevant because it doesn't have every top player in it then I don't think there's ever been a relevant tournament.
Excellent and fully expected news. Finally we can have a more cohesive and less confusing scene in Korea. I guess it could be considered a little sad that GSTL had to die to make this happen, but it's certainly for the best in the long run.

So why are they joining KeSPA, I thought KeSPA was only starcraft.
because kespa is gonna create LoL Proleague soon.
I thought KeSPA was a non-Profit organisation.
You think KeSPA cam do stuff like open a shop for the teams, support their marketing, run their own broadcasting, etcetc without getting money?? If KeSPA wants to spend $50,000, they first need $50,000.
Not only that, but KeSPA is designed to support eSports, which idk if some people forgot, but eSports is the business of competitive gaming. Why would you go into business AND go for least popular and least profitable games?

They totally did that with BW/SC2, yep.
But to get it right: I do think it is good if they are expanding to LoL. Not only is it one of the better candidates in korea in terms of interest, MOBAS probably fit well into the proleague format and its always good if you get major tournaments outside of Riots dictatorship.

Yeah I'm sure BW was neither popular nor profitable! KeSPA has gotten so weird nowadays.
It wasn't really popular when they started of. They took a very high risk there in the beginning. That is why many shit on blizzard when they came after over ten years of doing nothing to put licence fees on bw, while KeSPA made the starcraft franchise to what it is now - by themselves. They basically built up a name for blizzard resulting in millions of copies bought and blizzard came in the end was telling them they were doing blizzard harm.
Don't get me wrong, I think KeSPA has many flaws, but the point that they started from nowhere and built up something really big cannot be argued.

It's not like they hopped on to LoL super late, either. OGN Champions has been sponsored by KeSPA for quite some time now and the RO8 of that tournament has been 7/8 KeSPA teams for this and last season. CJ, for example, has had a team for over 1 1/2 years now. I'm not very big on Special Forces, did they build that from the ground aswell?
Organizations with actual employees need money, because employees need money, because employees will probably have to eat at some point. Even if Kespa were non-profit, they would still need a source of revenue for basic upkeep. Going into LoL, which is dominating the Korean market like game has ever come close to before, isn't even a choice. They need that money.
Besides, Kespa is the Korean Esports Association, not the Korean Starcraft Association, because then it would Kstaa, which looks and sounds really stupid. It could eventually become KLoLa, which if anything sounds even more stupid.
Re-translation, errors and mis-interprets guaranteed but you should get the point.
Seven months after Jun Byung Hun took the chair as Chief Executive of Korea e-Sports Association (KeSPA), he announced the "NEXT eSports" project, with the vision of unifying the eSports scene in mind.
This project will included four major steps, the first of which will be drastic changes to the structure of the association and its operating commitee.
First, changes to the participating companies will be discussed. Currently all teams are belong to their corresponding sponsor companies, which are also members of the association or members of the Council, cost of running the association are provided by those members, thus all decisions of the association are determined by them.
But since the National Assembly of South Korea voted and passed the eSports Promotion Bill, KeSPA is no longer a professional association, it is now serving the entire citizenship.
For pushing the Korean eSports scene, Chief Jun Byung Hun announced the "NEXT eSports" project, determined to make changes to the association itself.
1. KeSPA will open its doors to all organizations currently active in the South Korean eSports industry;
2. The teams will no longer need to pay the membership fee, a membership agreement is all it's needed to join KeSPA, receiving rights to participate the operating of corresponding games and association activities like player protection protocols, thus receiving long-time support from KeSPA;
3. TV stations can also join KeSPA via media agreements, grant rights to broadcast KeSPA tournaments and government-run tournaments. KeSPA will provide active support for its media partners;
4. If game developers pay their share of membership fee, the money will be used to promote eSports, organzing amateur tournaments like the Presidential Cup, and supporting eSports teams and players. The Association will actively support the domestic amateur scene, later IeSF will join the Sports Accord, to further provide support for the globalization of eSports.
5. Members and membership companies will be able to discuss events relating to leagues separately, they can also submit proposals to the Operating Commitee for discussion, the Commitee will be able to make decisions on minor subjects. Major subjects will be submitted to the Association under agreement of the general consensus. At the annual Korean eSports Award Ceremony, there will be a meeting for all members and membership companies.
6. The companies acting as Vice Chief Executive will be able to discuss the major subjects decided by the Operating Commitee with the Chief.
7. Financial operations will go under supervision by the Association Council, which will also be able to discuss and finalize major subjects submitted by the Chief.
8. KeSPA will operate under the Chief as the governing body of Korean eSports, with financial support from the membership fee and Council membership fee, to develop the Korean eSports scene. KeSPA will be working on their best to protect the players and help them retire into society if necessary, and provided support for the continuous running of teams. The Association will further maintain peace relationships among all members, and help communicate between members, to fans and media.
There was also a interview by fomos stating KeSPA is negotiating with GomTV and SPOTV (Proleague broadcaster) for accepting them as official broadcasting partners, and KeSPA is looking good being accepted as an official sports organzation.
TL;DR: KeSPA no longer requires membership fee to join, all Korean teams and organization will be able to join; broadcasting companies will be free to broadcast KeSPA events as long as they join KeSPA.

Went to liquipedia, I knew they did more than just sc2, but was surprised to find out they oversee about 20 different esports. Also to my knowledge it's governmentally run since a politician is the head right now.

At that time, coming out of a huge financial crisis, Korean government is eager to create new industry. The government supported esports relentlessly, otherwise KeSPA would never happen, and BW won't be a sports at that internet stage. KeSPA doesn't have huge risk back then, Korean government does.
