WCS Champion sOs - "I was shocked by the passion of the crowd"

Source: thisisgame

Woongjin_sOs defeated EG_Jaedong 4:1 in the WCS 2013 finals on the 10th of November, held at the Anaheim Convention Center in California.

sOs was successful in winning this tournament, 4 months after he was victorious over Flash to claim the 2013 Asian Indoor-Martial Arts Games championship.

Q. Congratulations on your victory. What are your thoughts?

I heard that once you win, you have a lot to say but I'm so tired that I don't think I can get it all out. Just before, I shook my head and silver powder kept falling out. I keep thinking of that and feeling happy.

Q. How did you feel when you lifted the trophy?

I just wanted to go and lift it as soon as possible. Originally, I wanted to high-five the crowd once I left the booth, but instead I just walked directly toward the trophy and lifted it straight away.

Q. Did you anticipate this result at the global finals?

I think for the average person this result must have been a complete surprise. But I worked really hard to prepare for this tournament, and some of the people around me thought that I would win. Because of those people, I was confident. I think I was just confident overall.

Q. Had you ever faced Jaedong in BW?

We were on the same team, but we never faced each other in tournament. I've played him a few times in SC2. In all match-ups, I don't adapt my play for the opponent. I play my game, trying to enjoy it as much as possible, so I play without much pressure on my shoulders. Jaedong has really gotten a lot better at ZvP compared with before. After watching him beat Dear, who was truly confident and self-assured, I thought to myself that playing him was really going to be a lot of fun.

Q. There were a lot of Jaedong fans at Blizzcon. What did you think about that?

I didn't think anything in particular about it. Something like "Oh. He has a lot of fans"? I loved playing in a place where there were so many fans. I really enjoyed it.

Q. It felt like the crowd was united behind Jaedong. Do you have a secret that let you overcome that?

When you're in the booth, all you can hear is "WOOOOHHHH~". The sound-proof is good, so it didn't bother me. They've all come to see SC2 right? I just thought of them all as fans, and enjoyed playing the game.

Q. You say that you weren't intimidated, but you cannon-rushed on every two-player map. Why did you do that?

Even though it was the final, I didn't feel nervous at all. I felt like I wanted to enjoy it in the moment, and that led to me doing that.

Q. Did you prepare any strategies specifically for the finals?

Because the Global Finals are a tournament that are held over a short period of time, instead of preparing specialised strategies, I just played a huge number of games over the last month, concentrating on the refining the basic strategies and reactions.

Q. What are you going to do with your winnings?

I'm going to save it in the hopes of becoming wealthy quickly. The prize money is great, but it was more important to me that I was the champion. I watched other players lift the trophy when they won and I thought that they looked really great. So I wanted to do it too. I'll have to think more later on how I'm going to use the prize money.

Before the tournament, you said that PvZ was your strongest match-up. Was it easy?

Jaedong is different from other Zergs, he's good at constantly irritating the opponent and a very good player. But today was different, I didn't feel any pressure and I was able to enjoy the games. I think that's why I won.

On the path to winning the championship, who was your toughest opponent?

Everybody was a gruelling opponent, but in every series I made a lot of mistakes in the first map. I felt a bit sad about that.

How did the atmosphere differ between the fans at Blizzcon and the fans back at home?

When I saw the fans at Anaheim, I got a shock. They weren't messing around. In Korea, they only cheer for the player that they're a fan of, but here even if they support one player, if that player loses they still chant the name of the player that one. Personally, I'd like it if Korean fans could learn from the foreign fans (laughter).

Q. As a player in the tournament, do you have anything you want to say?

The schedule gave us a generous amount of time, and they took care of all the food so the whole experience was comfortable. Also, because I won. If you're talking about WCS in general, I'd prefer it if the finals for each region had a higher prize pool relative to the season finals. I don't know about the other regions, but if there's an individual competition people people are despairing. The prize money has almost halved, all the winners seem to be talking about it. That's a little sad.

Q. Was it uncomfortable having the region finals, then the season finals straight afterward?

In Season Two and Three, I got knocked out so incredibly quickly that I didn't really have time to feel uncomfortable (laughter).

Q. Now that you're the global champion, do you have any thoughts about switching regions and playing in NA or EU?

I did nothing but prepare for the global finals, so I don't have any thoughts about that. I'm going to enjoy this atmosphere for a while, and then think about it. I think that I could switch if the situation is right.

Q. When were you certain that you were going to be the champion?

From the first map, I felt completely comfortable but I lost on Whirlwind. Weirdly, I didn't feel bad at all. Soulkey came and gave me advice even though I didn't ask him to, and he said "I think you're going to win". I was feeling confident even before he said that, but after I heard him say it I felt even better. So I think that's why I won so easily.

Q. There aren't many players who have shown consistently good results in WCS. How do you think you'll go in the future?

Before the finals, my goal was to win. Now that I've been given the title of champion, I think it'll be shameful when I lose. I think I'm going to have to work hard to maintain this position.

Who would you pick as your biggest rival for next season?

This is something I've thought for a long time, but I personally think that INnoVation and Soulkey are very good. I think they'll continue to be good in the future.

Before I read this, I didn't really like him at all.
Now, though.... I'm starting to warm up to him. We need more people like him actually. Think how much better our community would be if everybody wasn't so concerned with winning all the time.

That answer about the fans...man, and we thought the crowd was not supportive enough of sOs, but he says it's better than in Korea? That sucks

Wish we have more interviews for players, I feel like if we got to know him better earlier, more people would have cheered for him

He seems like a swell guy. I really like that the fact the whole crowd was basically cheering for JD didn't faze him at all.

Just plays for fun. He is the "casual" player on Woongjin after all ^^ Congrats sOs! Great performance at Blizzcon. Glad it didn't affect him at all that everyone was cheering for Jaedong. Hope to see him continue the great play in 2014. I hope he stays in WCS KR though

Great interview!
To all the haters: you deserve to witness many, many more Serral victories, worthy of the godlike player he is.

Thanks for the translation! I actually felt bad for him at Blizzcon because as someone in the crowd, I felt like almost everyone was cheering for Jaedong, and was worried that it would affect him, but looks like he's just too positive and levelheaded for that to have mattered.

Confused what he meant by that he and Jaedong were on the same team in bw. Isn't sOs on Woongjin not Oz/team 8?

He was on Hwaseung OZ for a time prior to Woongjin according to liquipedia.
