EDIT - IMPORTANT: As pointed out by some people: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=434388 So this is kind of contradictory with what still seems to be an official article from Red Bull Esports (relayed by the official twitter account). Could a mod slightly edit the title to reflect the uncertainty ?
I could've sworn in his WCS interview he talked about 'going to the military in 2014 or 2015', but maybe I'm thinking of someone else? D:
Either way...I really hope he comes back. Maybe not as a player but in some other e-sports related field. Then again, in two years...LotV will be out and it could very well be a new clean slate for guys like Bomber.
Consciption, such a horrible thing (military, social service or jail is mandatory for me too where I live).
However, like someone else already pointed out, he has said that he would still keep playing next year before his military service so this is surprising.
http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=434388 Direct quote from the man himself. I hope that a lot of fans come to Blizzcon and cheer at the games. Now that we're getting to the end of the year, I want to get a good result and return home to Korea triumphant. I'm planning to go to the military in 2015 or 2016, so I don't have much time left as a pro-gamer. Because of that, I think that I'm approaching my tournaments differently to other players. My goal is to finish this year with a win, and then make at least Top 8 at the global finals next year. I think that you'll see me at a lot of foreign tournaments next year.

Conscript armies are an anachronism in an era where cruise missiles, predator drones, and satellite guided munitions dominate the battlefield. And as far as infantry goes, professional career soldiers are likely worth 10 times their number of amatuers. Why does South Korea even bother with a draft?

Because SK fears relying on its professional army might not be enough in case of a conflict ? :/
I would not judge their military policies, as I reaaaaaally wouldn't pretend to know what it is to be in that kind of situation with an openly hostile country right at your door.

That's a nice thing to say for a country with the budget of the US and not the world's largest army (by soldiers) at your borders.
But I guess we have to wait a bit until the dust settles.
btw: wintex are you prepared for your 2 year distant relationship?

I dont share your opinion. I believe it should be reintroduced where I live. Anyway I wish Bomber good luck and hope he will be in shape when he returns.

Let's make the almighty Luxembourgish army
Anyway I don't see why it should be mandatory in our country, considering our surrounding :p.
I really hope it's not true and he won't go to the military before 2015

Taking young, talented people entirely away from the economy and society for two years to do military service is something I view as stupid no matter what the situation with neighbours or whatever, conscription is wrong, but that's a topic for another thread.
I hope this is just a missunderstanding as he's most certainly one of the most entertaining players as he tries to do new stuff all the time unlike some.
Well he'll come back and 27 is not THAT old afterall. I bet a lot of players of his age wish that they did their miltiary service while airforce ace was still around.
@404AlphaSquad: No country should even have an army, making it mandatory to serve in one is even more ridiculous.

Well if your neighbor is North Korea...
If north korea has no army than it doesn't matter that they are your neighbors^^ Though don't get me wrong I understand how unrealistic my views are (though coming from a country thats constitution includes to not wage war abroad while doing so in the middle east doesn't give one much hope anyways) and having a neighboring country like north korea certainly weighs heavily in favor of having an army with mandatory military service it does not change my views as a pacifist and I'm certainly sad for all the progaming careers that are/were ended too early due to this service.

It is more about the discipline and comradeships you learn in a barracks, than the military advantages for a country I care about. Most young people lack these 2 skills. I think it would be good for young people to go through drill, hard physical training with mental pressure... But thats of course my personal opinion and not the point of this thread.

There are much more humane ways of learning discipline and comradery (lol, which not even everyone gets in the barracks) than having to serve mandatory military time. There's a lot of shit that goes on in mandatory military service (heck, just regular military service too) that the public never hears about.
On the other hand, it's understandable if your neighbor is North Korea.
I don't understand. This redbull interview seems done earlier due to Bomber's hair color was still dark at the photoshot. And Bomber says he will go to the military in 2015/16 according to the pre-blizzcon interview.
I would rather believe the later, but still have to get prepared if he really retires after these two tournies.
E: I'm actually not even willing to think the possibilities that Bomber, the player I love so much is gonna leave. But he's going to leave eventually.
Really dont know why you all act so shocked when korean pros go to military service. Its fucktarded conscription they all have to comply to, its going to happen to all of them and we know it already, especially with the older crew.
GL to bomber though, really hate conscription with a passion -_-
Sucks so much but eventually everyone have to do it and with Lotv coming Bomber is making a tactical decision to go now and come back strong soon after release.
Maybe an incorrect translation/embellishment from the author? I don't see a direct quote from bomber saying he will go to them military after redbull battlegrounds. All it says directly is that bomber will try to be a pro gamer after he does his service which if the other article is right will not be for another year or two.
I really hope he will do well in military. I met a S.Korean on my cable car ride in Hong Kong and he told me that he just finished military services, one friend of him killed himself and another got into jail.

so we know that the redbull interview was wrong, because hes not retiring after battlegrounds. so i'm assuming the Team Liquid interview is true and that he will retire between 2015-2016. and, as a true bomber fan, i'm going to hope its closer to 2016.

Meh, continue to value freedom more than the usefulness of mental torture.

he can retire after blizzcon at the beggining of 2014 . he said he will not retire in next 2 months . so redbull interview is not wrong.
This is total bullshit. I mean if he WANTS to retire, fine, but being forced to serve in the army at the height of your programming career is terrible. He could make another 200k easy in the next 2 years...
It's so stupid how in the modern world we're still using foot soldiers. Just bomb the shit out of N Korea and get it over with.

He's old man. A lot of these players have held off for long enough and there is nothing wrong with going out on top (if it does end that way), also Korea isn't the only nation with mandatory military service.
Bomber knows what to do with his life better than all of us , so all I can say is good luck
and why are people here bitching about him being older ? 27 ?? did you all forget Nestea ?? he dispelled that myth a long time ago , old doesn't mean he can't kick ass , period.

Well they did have the luxury of delaying their military service in BW, so it really should come as no surprise. Bomber's doing his service kind of late.

That was back when the game was still getting worked out. He really doesn't have the mechanics to compete in modern sc2.

For a pro gamer whose dedicated his entire life to sc2, there is no logical transition. He won't be able to make as much money in any other field. So, unless he's independently wealthy, that would suck.
I'm Cypriot and we have mandatory military service too (Cyprus was invaded in 1974 by Turkey and they took half our island). Mandatory service is the biggest waste of life.

First, he doesn't want to retire, as he said, he wants to give a shot when he comes back, and if it proves impossible to come back as a player, he wants to do something related to SC2 anyway.
Second, this is not bullshit. I don't believe you can really judge while not leaving in a country permanently under the threat of a neighbour country that has nuclear missile (which really don't make up for the lack of a conventional army).

Not necessarily man. Some people actually get a lot out of it. I've had friends who came back and they said it helped make them a Man. They viewed it as an initiation so to speak. I can see both sides to the coin and there is still plenty of opportunity out there for them if they are willing to go back and finish their studies. Not many people can say they were pro gamers.

Sorry, but the previous poster is right. Mandatory is the biggest waste of life.
And what were your friends before if it helped them make a Man? a woman? o.O

So you would be ok with giving up your life for 2+ years to move to a military camp and be ordered around all day while eating whatever food they give you. You realize they don't allow alcohol or weed right? :D
