October 11, 2013 - Los Angeles, California - Today we are happy to announce the newest addition to our esports family, Greg "IdrA" Fields. IdrA is easily one of the most popular North American Starcraft 2 players and we are proud to support him as he makes his transition from a player to personality in the esports world. "I'm really excited to be sponsored by Tt eSPORTS." Greg comments, "They make great products and have been working with Artosis, Tasteless, White-Ra and ROOT Gaming for some time so I look forward to seeing what we all can do together." "We are very happy to be working with a eSPORTS personality such as idrA." says Shannon Robb, Marketing Manager for Thermaltake USA. "We really feel his talents and his contributions to the Starcraft community have helped the eSPORTS community become closer and sometimes massively more competitive. I feel like his personality is a perfect addition to our eSPORTS partnerships such as Root Gaming, Tastosis and White-Ra, as his aggressive nature adds a bit of needed attitude to our lineup. I am very excited to see what else he can do to help show the community that Tt eSPORTS is serious about pushing eSPORTS to the next level.” IdrA regularly streams on Twitch and offers coaching lessons for those who are interested. Hopefully as a caster. His casting is quite good, even if his play has fallen behind the times.

for a sec i thought he was coming back as a player. Still, this is pretty cool.

Hopefully he can increase his number of casting gigs. I really enjoy him casting, especially with Khaldor.

Problem is, we have enough casters. Enough that many of them don't get hired for LANS on a regular basis. I would like to see him playing qualifiers for DH, IEM or WCS.

He won't be. He already said he's done playing competitively and I doubt that's going to change (I wish it would though).

Really ? I hope we'll have a showmatch

Fixed.
I sincerely think him returning as a player would be a mistake.

It's possible this is just a sponsorship, or that he'll be helping design products for TTeSPORTS.

Looks like Artosis helped him out there. After all his behaviour i can't help to feel this is undeserved but good luck to him.

only viable reason for him to comeback would be a lucrative contract. otherwise it wouldnt make sense considering the level he was playing at when he ''retired''.
anyways glhf Idra. Your casting is pretty good.
|
Niceeeee Congrats to Idra and TTe
|
It's like an extension of that managing group. "Congratulations, you have now been with us for some time and we are now promoting you to Tt like the others"
|
Idra is such a solid caster but... In the mean time, show match with white ra please! (with race switch)
|
caster pool already saturated....
|
He joins a team? I thought he was retired and stopped playing competetively/moved to being a caster? Serious question.
Or does that mean he is going progamer again?
And what is a "esports personality" and why do you need a clan for this? So confused. :D

Tastosis and White-Ra none of them could be seen as pro-gamer.

I don't think he would succeed. When he quit, he just wasn't playing at the level he used to, in all honesty. I guess that's just my opinion though, I may be wrong.

Hmmm interesting pickup, but I don't see him vaulting to prominence as a caster. He's good, but I feel that this won't help the fact that tournaments haven't been hiring him.

DUDE, THAT IS GREAT NEWS!!! I have been a huge greg fields fan and I'm so pumped up right now. Go greg go go go! Have a blast because I know you will find success!

Okay, thanks. Then maybe the title is misleading and should be "Idra getting sponsored by Thermaltake" or something like that. "Joining" means joining a team or joing a group where in reality he is joining nothing. Too bad, was really hoping he would try it again with esports. We could need more top players with personality in nowadays' SC2. Only Naniwa is not enough. But then again, he probably wouln't even reach the top, even if he wanted.
White-Ra is for sure a progamer, though taking it a bit slower because of family etc. How dare you say something other!
|
Hes gotta do something with Artosis and Tasteless, I feel like those 3 could put together some good stuff
|
He makes a transition to esports personality but the funny thing is that he has no personality besides being a dick.

Yes, back playing I hope!!!

|
Stick 'em with the pointy end, Idra.
|
I never really like Idra as a player with his attitude problems but I think he has a very good take on the game and approaches casting at an intellectual level at times that really helps a person who only watches SC2.
|
oh wow... didn't expect this one
|
On October 15 2013 03:16 Uni1987 wrote: Yes, back playing I hope!!!
Doubt it. He doesn't seem to really enjoy being a pro SC2 player. Being more of a personality/caster/etc will probably make him a lot happier and will be a better role for him overall.

The best part about Greg Fields is that he's too damn human! Nobody's perfect yet everyone in eSports management & casting have to be politically correct, racially/genderly hyper-sensitive, and to walk on eggshells making sure to put out a bland product that doesn't offend anyone.
I know Greg will be the center of at least 1-2 controversies next year (2014) and I predict he will get a huge amount of fans just for the sake of his unpredictable and awesome meltdowns!
(best moment of my SC2 life was when he rage quit due to hallucinated collosi...)
|
I knew IdrA and White-rA were brothers because their names both ended with ra XD
|
brilliant move, they can come out with a new line of rage-resistant peripherals for games. "Idra rage tested, White-ra approved"
|
Whitera and Idra in the same team xD The two extremes of mannerism ! (Don't think it is english btw xD)
|
Is this the rise of 2v2 legends Whidra?
|
|
I thought he went back to college when he was kicked from EG.
He's made enough money to pay for any ivy league education he wants, why would he stick around in this industry?
|

What is he exactly? A player? A caster? (who rarely casts tournaments). I don't really understand that...
|
This is awesome, idra is such a great caster would love to see more of him

I really REALLY like idra casting....
|
On October 15 2013 03:39 Akaann wrote: What is he exactly? A player? A caster? (who rarely casts tournaments). I don't really understand that...
He's a very talented personality, caster and non-competive player
|
Aside from a random TTe mouse box with White-Ra on it, I haven't seen too much from them. Do they do much of anything in North America or primarily EU?
Congrats to Idra, can't help but feel Artosis threw him a bone here, but I'm glad he's moving forward professionally.

Idra is a lightning rod of controversy. Love him or hate him, he's like a "shock jock" of startcraft e-news media focus.

Going back to college, getting an ivy league education while having a blast without any monetary worries?
Seems like the best option one could ever have.

I don't think a person like IdrA, who has made it through the hell of a KESPA team house, would be deterred by a bit of work.

It may be a better, more economical use of his time and energy currently than any of his other options.

... as his aggressive nature adds a bit of needed attitude to our lineup.
Was I the only one who lost it here? I mean I know Idra bring the name and the rage but let's not kid ourselves. Hardware companies aren't doing poorly because of a lack of attitude in the personalities they sponsor. Pitching this as them balancing themselves out is a bit silly.
Regardless, glad he's got someone backing him as I really like his casting and personality outside of the game.

Congrats Idra! Glad to see that TTeSPORTS grab another good caster like him!

hope he casts some stuffs

The more people with actual deep technical understanding of the game we get over youtube play by play guys whose main objective seems to be seeing how many words they can manage to disgorge at extremely shrill octaves in 30 seconds, the better.
If Idra replaces a caster who is not nearly as good as him, it will make the event better, and so everyone wins.

Well, I hope he will "feel like home" there along side TTeSports. Good luck!

For a second there I thought that IdrA was fading when I watched his streams and saw he had less than the usual amount of viewers. I was concerned in fact. I'm very glad that TTeSports made this pickup.
|
To me it seems like Idra's fame is fading fast. Congrats on the TTeSports sponsorship, but I bet he was hoping for better partners. Unfortunately for him, MLG, WCS etc. already have a complete set of casters.
|
|
The article even says it will help him in his "transition" to becoming an esports personality.
As much as I would like him to casually play in qualifiers, I doubt he will.
|
There is absolutely no way in hell idra goes back to playing competitively, sorry to disappoint idra fans, it's just not going to happen.
|
Congrats on getting this IdrA, hopefully will see more of you instead of just streams
|
yay....I guess. Never liked his attitude but as an eSports personality he ranks with the likes of Destiny...seems fitting.
|
ATC still has shows without English casters. I don't know if that's "beneath" his level or just on at the wrong time, but IdrA is quite welcome as a caster.
|
YESSSS so awesome. gratz to idra!!!!
|
Watching the way that IdrA still acts on his stream I feel that TteSports is pretty brave doing this. EG had valid reasons for sacking IdrA and I am not really seeing anything that indicates that IdrA has learned any lessons from that incident. It should be an interesting one to watch. Compared to others out there I don't think he has the engaging personality to make it as a caster but he does seem to have a fairly good following of those keen to see his stream antics, so maybe this is a good match if he can promote their products.

EG had sponsorships from Intel, Monster, Kingston Hyper X, etc. When people got pissed at Idra they went straight to the sponsors who then contacted EG trying to find out what was going on with him and stuff. I'm curious as to how many times people really did contact sponsors to call out IdrA's behavior haha. I guess people have too much time on their hands...

I like how "too much time on their hands", "no life", etc. is only applied to actions that are disapproved of, I'm always incredibly amused.

Grats for idra...I really don't understand what he does now lol. I don't really care for his stream much because I am not a zerg player. I always cheered for him when he played and it was him vs koreans like it is scarlett and naniwa vs koreans.

Really cool to see Tt esports supporting more than just players.

Dude he is far from the absolute worst in esports. You can argue starcraft but no where near a sadly huge amount of people in general.

Awwwww Yeah
IdrA the caster, coming soon.
|
You guys should watch some CoD tournaments at MLG if you think idrA is bad. Now THOSE people are bad. And all respects are lost to CoD players afterward.
|
this was out of the blue, but I'm pretty excited to see what Tt and Idra have in store for the future.
|
I was wondering what Idra had been up to. Glad to hear we'll be seeing more of him soon.
|
Congrats Greg, hope to see you cast more!
|
IdrA is a great caster and a decent player. I just wish he would grow up and stop acting like a child. I am actually pretty shocked that Tt would sponsor him.
|
A good move right there, hope we see him cast some more tournaments now.

Sometimes I post just to see my own post count because I'm too dumb/lazy to figure out the situation at the top left.

Oh that's awesome to read! Really happy iDra didn't go into a 4ever alone dark corner of a room. Can't wait to see him back in action! altho i hope he learned some lessons from the past.
Gz to the player and the team, i am sure everything will turn out alright for both of them

oh hell yeah TTe you have my love
|
transition from a player to personality in the esports world.
Sounds weird
|
congratz! his casting is great.
|
Congrats and all the best Idra. ...push like you've never pushed before till this 'next level' has been reached...

IdrA is a brilliant analytical caster. Very enjoyable whenever he casts and very knowledgeable. Every tournament that has him, increases its value in my opinion.

Who on this forum has ever contacted sponsors because IdrA insulted some guy on a stream or Stephano got drunk or whatever? I wouldn't even know where to begin or whom contact, and I would have to feel way more motivated to do that than to post on TL (for the "you yourself have so much time you have 10000 posts" response).
Watching SC2 streams during all your free time is pretty much a hobby, but emailing sponsors pushes it into the realm of professional commitment, that's what I meant.

hmm Idra and White-Ra in the same boat. i gues we can expand White-Ra's "Firste we make Expansion than we denfese it" into "First we make Expansion than we RAGEQUIT!!!! " to include Idra into the TTE.
But im curious how he will do in this team, hope he get some good support there.

Grandpa.TT.WhiteRa and Grandpa.TT.IdrA. They only need a terran now to complete an epic trifecta.

Congratulations Idra! Now when are you going back to Korea? :D

Dude is better off going back to school imo

I have a TT-Esports mechandise hammer from Cebit, signed by IdrA and Whitera ( and Mc and nerchio and many others..)

It's an Idra thread posted in community news and barely reached 9 pages in over 24 hours. MKP switches to LoL and reaches over 47 in that period.
It's neat that he is back. I just thought he would have pursued the college life after EG. While continuing to stream.

This would apply to his casting/being on shows being relevant, but his fan base regardless is way down from what I remember.

Wasn't my question. You are right he is as good if not better than when he quit playing pro, but I feel like his relevance is down and TTESPORTS will raise it. Maybe he will show up more now. It is hard to demand popularity if you're not playing very few can do it.

Therlmaltake products it is. Brb.

I think it's a nice precedent for pros to retire into the casting life. Love him or hate him he makes everyone's blood boil in a good way. I'm glad he hasn't left the scene and looking forward to what's next.

good, this is good for greg
im not worried about him anymore, all shadow of doubt has left my mind, he'll be fine ^_^

But his twitch numbers are the highest on twitch right now. Idra always draws a crowd. Fact is, everyone's numbers are down.

2 years ago this shit wouldve sold like crazy.
I just hope he can still stay around and make a living out of it. Thing is, I wish he stopped shitting on the game as it is what made him. No SC2 = IdrA what?
on the other hand, he seems to be very intelligent and passionate. Never too late to get back to school I guess.

He could easily return to school. Would take a semester to get back into the swing of things (I've talked to folks who return for graduate school after years in industry and they confirm it's a difficult switch), but not at all impossible given his work ethic.
So long as StarCraft provides him with enough to live off of, like private lessons, commentating, or designing products for TteSPORTS, he'll be present in the community. His knowledge, experience, candor, and the simple fact that English is his native language (I mean, most Koreans have to use a translator, which limits their opportunities as a public personality) all mean he's extremely valuable to the community worldwide. He ain't goin' nowhere, lol.

meh, hope this doesnt help him too cast big events, he shits on the game and insults anyone and everyone he plays against (even fans) why should he get too cast when he hates sc and just complains non stop about it and there are so many other casters that enjoy the game much more and have equal game knowledge as him

I think many people appreciate Idra's commentary because of the low/no-fluff casting with good technical info, as well as the fact that he's realistic and provides true criticism rather than compliments-only.
That said, I'm not someone who follows or watches Idra much, but as far as I understand your generalizations of him are exactly that, and also seem quite biased and ignorant. He maybe shines some players in a somewhat negative light (perhaps for good reason though), but it's certainly not all players he's played, and when casting I've heard him make many compliments and positive statements about all sorts of things.
