The (Wiki)International e-Culture Festival 2013 crowned its champion last night with (T)Xenocider defeating (P)Welmu 2-0 in the finals. He gets to take home a $10,000 prize for his efforts.

(Z)Ret took third over (P)MadBull to shut out the Koreans from a podium finish in a tournament hosted in Korea.

Xeno seems to just shit on TvP IMO. He knows how to pull the boys and make it happen. Always been a xeno fan. Now he's got 10g in his pocket to prove it.

Just off that link to the brackets, he didn't even drop a game.

Glad his hard work is paying off now. I remember seeing him in a rather down state this one time on his stream, where he was clearly frustrated with his progression. Clearly he's made progress with these results .

He gets to take home a $10,000 prize for his efforts.

Xenocider gets more money for a firstplace in a tournament with C-level players than Life/Naniwa will get for placing second at IEM which was stacked.

Well, he didn't get any WCS points, so there is a difference in the end.

Big congrats to Xeno, well done!

I was just going to say this.

But yes, a huge congrats to Xeno. Hopefully, it won't be long before he starts trading games with the big boys.

I'm also glad that he's playing in these "smaller" tournaments to gain some experience and confidence (and money!). It was clear to him that he was not good enough when he first joined EG to hang with the best of the best. There's no shame in admitting it, and sometimes you need to take one step back before you can take two steps forward. (Hell, even Bisu was sent back to the B-team at one point). While he may not be getting the spotlight from these wins, what he's doing is much more productive than trying to trudge on after taking loss after loss, and I admire him for that.

Bit of a silly tournament...it was like a random assortment of foreign pros/semi-pros, three amateur Koreans and a couple of amateur Chinese players..competing for quite a large prizepool.

Not to take away anything from Xenocider, but Welmu did have to beat three Koreans to get to the finals, whilst Xeno only had to play Ret :X

Yeah Foreigners shouldn't go to Korea and take away their prizemoney, people usually complain about koreans not having enough opportunities in their country. Now we know why.

Madbull got a few nice wins there, glad too see a few bits from him.

And congrats Xeno of course !

Same, I'm not sure where the money comes from for these events.

Obviously Xeno's route to 10k was easier than Life, but you can't blame the guy, since everyone would do the same if given that opportunity. Just look at all the Koreans joining other regions for WCS because its easier competition/cash, people just feel the need to get mad at anything in SC2 scene these days lol

What I see is this - while Koreans were out of the country beating up foreigners and taking their money, Xenocider, Welmu, and Ret made a ninja move into Korea to get some of it back.

Well played.

? yes he "won a touny" Ill give him that but he beat 2 known players Ret and Welmu... u can NOT call xeno the best foreigner on the team just because he won a tourny by playing 2 bo3s against those 2 players when the other plays win against players xeno could not xeno is not even in challenger league i will remind u.

This tournament was weak because of IEM/WCS.
Everyone who has the slightest shot of WCS Finals wants to get CS poitns so they all go to the WCS Points event (IEM). Money is not as important, since the big money is in the WCS Finals.

Pickung lucrative tournaments is part of the job (ask IesF world champion Sjow), attending here was just a good call Xeno made, although I would have rather seen Hasu or Welmu walk away with the 10k.

That said, congratz to Xenocider.

Wow Xenocider gets $10,000 for winning some garbage tournament. If I was a pro gamer I would have said screw IEM I'm getting some easy money. I guess I'm just annoyed that Naniwa only got $4,000 despite being so much better.
FUCK YOU, Starcraft isnt dead cause I'm playing it! :)

That said, congratz to Xenocider.

Yeah definitely a smart move by Xeno. I just dunno why so few good players saw this as a good opportunity with the prizepool. I mean, it was in Korea, and there are so many Korean players who I thought would jump at this chance.

In the bracket that I see Xenocider beat a Korean as well. And that Korean might be unknown but the same goes for the one that Welmu faced in the same round.

My friend (who knows nothing about starcraft) saw xeno randomly at the escapist expo (WCG USA) and asked him if he won the prize he was holding at a raffle. Xeno apparently, was a pompus butt and completely sneered and ridiculed him. Maybe hes a good sc2 player but he doesn't seem like the greatest guy...

he's like 12 isn't he? remember when they had David Kim on Inside the Game? He was an idiot for the first hour or so, then he stopped talking (assuming someone from EG told him to chill out and apologize) then, while everyone was saying goodbye to david kim, he said he was sorry and stuff.

They just need to divert some of their dirty eg money to life-coaching or something so he doesn't turn into an arrogant ungrateful kid.

Xenocider gets more money for a firstplace in a tournament with C-level players than Life/Naniwa will get for placing second at IEM which was stacked.

and this is what is wrong with the world.

Well, he didn't get any WCS points, so there is a difference in the end.

Big congrats to Xeno, well done!

Pretty sure most players at IEM would trade some of their WCS points for money :p

Yeah Foreigners shouldn't go to Korea and take away their prizemoney, people usually complain about koreans not having enough opportunities in their country. Now we know why.

Madbull got a few nice wins there, glad too see a few bits from him.

And congrats Xeno of course !

Yea im sure that is how it went down. All the koreans turned down an opportunity to play in it.

They wouldn't if it meant the difference between qualifying for WCS grand finals or not. If they won't go to blizzcon for sure then yeah you are right.

Yeah because you have to be humble and mature after winning ten thousand dollars playing a video game. For fucks sake, its a fucking game. He's 16, at best. You know how cocky and full of shit EVERY MAN IS AT 16?!

You all are so freaking stupid. Oh he's cocky and immature. He plays a video game for a living, while in high school. It cracks me up all the comments about all these young, or even old, players being 'bad mannered' or 'immature'. Do you not watch professional sports? Shit talking, and being immature is the nature of the beast.

Competition gets the worst of people.

And for the retard with the 'you didn't read that outloud before posting it, did you' comment... Why would I? He knows when to pull the boys and go for the win...or as some people would say SCV train? I call em the boys. He pulls the boys out vs protoss and wins.

And now I'm ready for the flaming from all the butt hurt people who rabble rabble rabble when someone isn't their image of a professional GAMEr....

Wowowowowow I did not expect this. He came off that way but I did say I reserved judgement and didn't bad talk Xeno. I don't expect a ton out of 16 year olds so I didn't intend to hate on him.

But I will disagree in some aspects. Not all 16 year olds are like that. Also not all competitors in sports/games/etc. are like that. I don't even really know if Xeno is like that.

But I won't flame you or get butt hurt Sorry for misunderstanding.

I had no idea this tournament even existed. Kind of bummed I didn't get to see it if it was streamed since I was too preoccupied focusing on IEM.

For such a big prize pool how come the field was kind of soft for a tournament in south korea?

..please name a non korean EG member that doesn't get smashed by top players. Or well, even no name players.

Thorzain, demuslim, suppy, huk...

So of those four, obvious machine and incontrol left out, that doesn't get routinely smashed by top players.

I think he's right in line with the rest of the non korean members of the team. They still show up to majors, or open brackets and most times (not hating) flop.

That's because IEF is a big event hosted once a year.
IEM is simply more famous, even though IEF always does a great job trying to support eSports.

Also, tournaments like IEF try to support eSports in general. To celebrate eSports, it's important to give not only to the best in the world, but those aspiring to be the best as well.

I hope these tournaments get more support in the future!

Yeah I would've thought that there would be a bunch of Koreans that just signed up for the chance at EZ money. Plenty could have made it I'm sure.

Well, he didn't get any WCS points, so there is a difference in the end.

Big congrats to Xeno, well done!

Pretty sure most players at IEM would trade some of their WCS points for money :p

They could have done that buy going to this event. But they went to IEM and Libo won the money.

I mean, people are aware that they normally set the prize money before the players sign up? Its not like they gauge the level cash to hand out based on who is attending.

Really happy for him, I enjoy watching him stream and he has a lot of potential. Plus saying he's won 10k playing SC2 will give him a lot more validation with school/family -- always nice to have.

you win the thread, I agree.

Good job getting that money, guys!!

It's not the first time in sc2 history there's been a fairly unknown tournament with a good prize pool and seemingly random selection of players, I can think of quite a few off the top of my head, just get over it!!

not the fact that IEF had same / similiar price money then IEM is the problem.

Your ignorant asses are the problem... who cares man? Xeno won and thats cool.
who cares about the price money for some other guys that got second in another tournament, the news is : xeno won IEF. Period.

damn thats annoying... something comes up and the only thing that is relevant is complaining about other stuff.. TAHT is killing e-sports

GJ Xeno

He had been so depressed (showing this via status updates on twitter/Facebook) about his previous results and I hope that this will give him the foresight not to became demotivated when results aren't as expected. You can't always do well in this evern-changing world of eSports.

I think if a Code S player attended this would have been a rofl-stomp though.

So the question now is, just when will the EG curse strike down this rising star?
I root for Euro Zergs, NA Protoss* and Korean Terrans. (Any North American who has beat a Korean Pro as Protoss counts as NA Toss)

I think that all "ifs" are stupid here. Doesn't matter that there were no Code S Koreans.
I am happy that there are still from time to time big, less known tournaments with money. This one was with big money. That is good. We all know that SC2 is not doing well nowadays. One of the ways to keep players in this e-sport game is to organize such tournaments. To give more players chances of winning big money.

Congratulations to Xeno, awesome win!

Yeah I don't know I've seen him on twitter and he seems kind of immature and cocky. But I reserve judgement I guess.

Doubt he cares that much about 10k, being in EG and all. Still, sick sum of money to have when you're fifteen. Hell, I'm twenty five and I don't have nearly that much in my bank account.

Doubt his contract is that good. He was picked up as a talent, doesn't really have a strong fanbase/following, and prior to his recent results no achievements.

Haha, no ofc, SaSe did this last year in IEF 2012 while there were ESWC and other big tournaments the same weekend.

I also heard rumours that NaNiwa could have been able to attend this tournament if it wasn't for IEM having WCS point

This could be usefull in OP.

Some of you seems not to know about this tournament. This tournament was played in Korean esport festival.

Why only semipro or amateur koreans? There was preliminary for koreans and only semipro/amateurs were allowed to play.

There were invites for foreign players but some of them cancelled. This is reason for some BYE. Naniwa most likely was one of these.

Tournament was casted by Wolf and Whiplash. Reason why you didnt know about this tournament might be that you dont follow Ret, Welmu, Xenocider, Wolf, HasuObs, Whiplash or EG on Twitter. Or you don't follow TeamLiquid forums :D (http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=431959)

You find pictures from IEF 2013 from here: http://www.ief.kr/bbs/board.php?bo_table=gallery&wr_id=55 (pictures are VERY BIG)

Hahaha. I'm of Finnish heritage so I could totally see this. Although the only real experience I have of this is the other way around, which I don't see much of in this thread (i.e., Finns gloating over Swedes because of Welmu's cash money). Faniwas. A well coined phrase, man.

Welmu does look like he's crying behind his glasses in this picture. So funny to see next to the elated smile of Libo.

I just realized that the biggest and most prestigious foreign RTS tournament besides WCG in 2006 (WC3L Season 9) had 10K pricemoney as well. And that was a team-league (at least 5 players) with months of online matches plus offline playoffs.

times are changing :D
