SC2 related part of the article: SeleCT has left his DotA 2 team QPAD Red Pands.
On May 27th (KST), QPAD Red Pandas released a statement with the news that SeleCT and Mini had left the team (Mini is not SC2 Mini but a DotA 2 player named Mini). SeleCT decided to retire from competitive SC2 gaming and attempted to start a new career in DotA 2 back in October of 2012. However, it was released that SeleCT now plans to return to SC2.
Mini will be pursuing to continue his DotA 2 career by finding a new team. SeleCT has stated that he will return to SC2 and attempt to qualify for the World Championship Series.
DotA 2 related part of the article: Seeing as how this is an SC2 forum. I decided not to translate this part of the article. It just basically explains the DotA 2 team SeleCT was formerly affiliated with, their roster, and future plans. However, if there are enough requests from people who want to read what it says, then I will translate it.
Yes! He streamed for about 10 hours yesterday and everyone got super hyped Does anyone know if he made gm that day? I know he went to #1 masters in his league in 2 days! His apm was insane as well
wow! was watching him stream HotS yesterday. didn't know this would happen though. he seemed to be doing decently well, rank 1 masters last i saw and constantly watching replays and learning from mistakes and such. good luck qualifying for wcs
Not a surprise really, he stated he left Qpad yesterday and he hadn't played Dota for three days. I guess the mindset required for MOBAs just doesn't fit the mindset of RTS gamers, as we have seen in CoCa, Puzzle and sC. Glad to see SeleCT return to the scene.
Watched his stream the last 2 days and it was kind of obvious that he's returning, he seemed so happy to be playing sc2 again. Btw, he's really funny and it's interesting to see him go from mid master to gm soon in a couple of 10h sessions, I recommend it!

Watched his stream yesterday, was pretty good considering the break he took. Glad to see him going back to SC2 and looking forward for more streams as well.

He seemed overjoyed with how much better Terran seems in HOTS than in WoL. That maybe a reason too since he also said it is "less stressful" to play terran in HOTS than in WoL from what I saw on his stream.
SeleCT wasn't doing too well with QPAD as of late, and I'm glad he's back. He will probably do much better for himself in SC2. I would've hope QPAD Red Pandas went to SC2 though haha, 2GD could've kept SeleCT on hand for publicity and also send him to DreamHacks, but I guess he doesnt want the lag from EU to NA TT

Yeah because all those retired SC2 pros that transitioned to LoL did SOOOOOO well...
SeleCT was one of the only ones with actual multi-game history and skill and even he couldn't do all that well. SC2 players skill lies in their individual play not their team coordination. Makes little sense to try and transition out of 1v1 games into team-based games and expect to do well.

Welcome back Select, it's good to see one of the big names from the early days return! I hope you'll be as successful as you desire again, looking forward to see you in WCS.
Yayyy SeleCT! <3 <3 I was sad when I read that he left the Pandas, I wanted to see him do well in Dota2... But if he really returns to SC2 then I sure as hell won't complain. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
On May 27 2013 05:51 StarVe wrote: This is just Koreans reading QPAD statement and translating it and you translating it back, no? Or do they have a statement by SeleCT, too?
Cuz the QPAD statement doesn't confirm anything about a return.
I hope he makes a rejuvenated, fresh return to SC2. I used to enjoy watching him playing during early WoL, but he was clearly getting jaded as time went by and watching him proxy 2rax'ing every moving thing he comes across toward the end of his career got old pretty fast.

I saw him streaming and was wondering if this was his big comeback. Nice to see him back and good luck to select! I think hots will suit his drop play style.
Watching SeleCT replays was the beginning of the addiction for me. So cool to see such a legend come back! And his stream is funny as hell, too. Such a cheerful, cool dude. Fuck, I'm so happy! <3
Was waiting for this announcement. I guess QPAnDas not qualifying for TI3 and getting huge viewer numbers streaming SC2 recently, helped this decision on the way. Well, welcome back, SeleCT!

I loved watching him play DotA though! It's a game of decisions and nuances and while he was behind the curve set by people who've been playing dota 1 / dota 2 for the last few years, he still didn't seem horribly out of place / throw every game. I think he did well considering he was a SC2 player kinda jumping in to a new game!
Good to see him going back to SC2 now, rather than just disappearing! Gogo select!

The zeal for select had my expectations up. his maganus play was promising but after the western quals, he basically threw that game with a really passive magnus. He was unreliable and rarely effective at #3 so they tried switching him to #1 and #2 which was more devastating. In the end, he just didnt have what it takes to play at the top tier.
Hell, its about time, and honestly terran didn't really change much from wol to hots, I doubt he'd have trouble getting back to as good as he was before quitting.
This really is the perfect time for him to try his hands back in Sc2 with ignite afterburners making his drop heavy multitasking style of WoL that much stronger!
Select is a very mannered player. Would love for TL to pick him up and have fresh, and hungry players on the team. Actually any team that would pick him up would be a great move. Watching him on stream I can tell he still has some passion in him .

Best Terran in NA? Even if you consider him a ladder superstar - which I find funny you're using the term in a derogatory sense - any NA talent is welcome.

+1 on that one. Saw really nice games between Select and CatZ this weekend. CatZ said something like "Select is one of my best SC2 friends..." during replay analysis after a game CatZ lost against Select. I have to check that VOD for the correct quote, but it was something similar.

Welcome back SeleCT. Met him at MLG Anaheim, he's a nice dude. I don't think the pro tier that SeleCT is at makes him (or anyone at that level) a threat to win anything; but if he's enjoying himself, more power to him. GL HF.
I saw SeleCTs Stream the first 2 days of his return to SC2-projekt. While he's still lacking knowledge of some hots changes, it's really entertainig to watch his stream.
Even if he doesn't get back to being one of the better foreigners, he could always turn into a more skilled/less trolly version of Dragon his stream is extremely entertaining. He has a great personality, very funny and is pulling in a large number of viewers.
Definitely a good decision by Select considering he was always a good player at SC2. WCS definitely helps and is a good incentive for him to return (now that he has more chances to win).

The best part of 1v1 game is that you can show your skills better and not be blamed by everything from keyboard warriors on the internet as much. I remember reading a few posts in the Dota 2 forums and seen a decent amount of insults and negativity towards him for some reason (of course it may be a minority I only read a few posts of a thread).

See, these types of comments is what I don't get and is what is not giving me a good impression of the MOBA community. SC2 may have its haters but outside a few exceptions (and some situations, like foreigners getting seeds into GSL), the SC2 community treats its players well. Even players that gained a bit of infamy (like the Terran Rain) all were respected, especially when they left the scene (I remember reading the Rain retiring thread and nearly every single comment gave him respect and wished him fair well with almost no one hating on him).

Yes, he played WC3 DotA before SC2 (when he retired from SC2, he also mentioned that he played Dota before SC2, and just wanted to return to the scene). He did decently in Dota before, so it's not like he wasn't used to it before.
I say it's not the case of mindset for MOBAs but the fact that being good at 1v1 games is more rewarding than being good at team games.
No matter how good you are, you are still limited because it's a team game (team coordination impacts the game way more than what individual skill can make up for in most cases).
And again, if you are a decent player in a game (enough to make it far in tournaments consistently) than you might as well stay playing the same game unless you don't enjoy it as much as another. Coca and Puzzle and sC all returned to SC2 (despite the huge break) as good players still (Coca and Puzzle owning the group stages and making it to the play offs at Dreamhack, despite only returning to HotS for like a month or 2) and sC owning it up in the GSTL a decent amount of times. Seems like Select is doing just as well too making it to

Again, he played Dota professionally before SC2, probably even before most are playing Dota right now. Finally, didn't like his switch to dota...I think the actual SeleCT is better in a game where the results only depend on his own skill. Plus that the moba-communities are allways full of haters (looks like)... reminds me of football/soccer in Germany, the sport is nice. But most of the fans suck .
PS: Funny ppl in here that are actually kinda implying a moba is (skill/mechanical wise for each player) more difficult to play than an RTS. Funny, really!

My theory for people who game hop different competitive games all the time are the type of players who learn fast and get good quick. So with new games there is the largest skill gap and opportunity for them to win money or just be a top player, and when they stick around in a scene too long other people catch up and surpass them so they move along to a new game. Is this the cast with Select? (or even partly?)
Haha I saw it at the streams and went all "you cannot fool me, you play dota2 lolo" and while I am typing this I already paused in the mid and opened the stream

More rewarding? It really depends on the person. I really enjoy the team aspect of Dota 2, playing with friends, executing cool stuff and strats as a team, and so on.
You need a different skillset for both games, and I like them both, but playing Dota can be really rewarding in a different way than starcraft.
Awesome news. He was a player that I would always root for in tournaments before he quit. I've been following his stream the past few days and he's looking solid already, not to mention I find him very entertaining.
I must say that this fills a much needed hole that us Terran stream fans were feeling. This man is ungodly in his talent, and I am happy to see him playing. A cut above.

he made me lol last night when he was playing a protoss who used the recall ability, select flipped out haha cuz he had never seen it before.

To be fair, your statement DID make you sound really arrogant and condescending. SeleCT is a great player. No reason to rub his nose in the fact that his DotA 2 career never took off. And I don't understand why you disregard the team play vs individual skill argument. It's perfectly valid, even if you don't believe it applies to SeleCT specifically. I also speak as a Moba/SC2 player. That doesn't say a whole lot man. The truth of the matter is as much as we like the guy (because I do like the guy- proud supporter since his Dignitas days and showed plenty of support) he was easy to write off in Dota2. I saw him play countless times and he really did have a weak pool to chose from. I don't like stupid generalizations or oversimplifying matters but there is a lot missing when you guys try to sell that can of worms time and time again. I've picked it apart on more than one occasion and I don't intend on doing it again. There's a big gap & it's not going to get any easier.
It's not select's fault he didn't succeed in dota. Hard to find a good team that fits. Singsing was the downfall of that team. Just doesn't seem like a good team player that dude.
After fail in TI3 qualifiers Selects leaving qpads was just matter of time. He played badly (because he almost instantly was picked in pro team, with only a month-two of practice). And i think he switched to dota2 because : 1) he saw TI2 "wow easy money", 2) his sc2 was "not in best condition", and i think in isn't last of his transfers (LoL next maybe).
That is fantastic, I wonder who might pick him up or if he'll fly it solo for a while.
I don't think he is going to play pro level play for a little bit, I'm gonna guess he'll fly solo, or get picked up but not play any big tourneys for a bit. I do think that he will fly solo for now though, but I'm not on the inside :/.
Maybe some team would want to pick him up before he gets good again, could be cheaper. I mean it's freaking Select, he'll be good again before too long.
I remember watching Select playing Dawn of War back in the day, and he has the honour of being the first gamer I saw play an SC2 match in person vs Socke at IEM Cologne a few years ago. Good to see him back.
Select has been a blast to watch since his return. He seems to have a lot of fun which makes it enjoyable for me as a viewer. His playstyle and reactions just make for a very entertaining stream. Best SC2 stream out there at the moment.

Yes, if you try to quit for a few months and ythen comeback, i am almost certain that you will get same league or better in less than 1 week. Starcraft is all about brain muscles.

SeleCT is a great guy so it's hard to talk bad about him, but it was pretty evident he wasn't at a professional level in DOTA. I totally agree with this. I think if the team itself had more practice and more time then they could have shown some results. Honestly I don't think SeleCT was having as much fun in Dota as he was in SC2.

I subscribed cuz he was very adamant about practicing and streaming but barely see him online anymore.. this will be the fourth subscription I have to cancel now because of the lack of sc2 streamers with subscription options....actually streaming.
He just attended the Redbull training battlegrounds. He'll be back with streaming soon I think, or at least after MLG.
looks like you're quite wrong, he hasn't been streaming any of his games. he ladders all day but hasn't streamed a single game.

Hes not wrong at all. Select will be in the LA area for about 2 weeks to compete in the RedBull training grounds then MLG Anaheim the following weekend. Hes nowhere he feels comfortable to stream his games during the downtime. Once hes back he'll continue to stream.

in all honesty he didnt play anywhere near long enough to be good at DOTA. you wouldnt expect most dota pros to learn starcraft in 8 months, so why would you expect someone to learn dota with it's 1 hour games and a billion heros in that time frame? Select was pretty good considering the little practice he had.

Because Dota players like to take on superior airs.
