The wait is finally over! Seeds have been given out, groups have been set, and players are preparing to claim the first “Heart of the Swarm” Code S Championship.
The 32 players, made up of both new and old faces, seek to be acknowledged as the best and although we might sound like a broken record, this season is shaping up to be the toughest one yet!
The road to victory begins on April 4th, 6:10PM (KST).
The Code S Seeds for this season will go to SK Telecom T1 Rain and STX Soul Last.
EG_Stephano (Ilyes Satouri) has forfeited his Code S spot for this season. To replace him, a Wild Card Group was played made up of the 3rd place finishers in each Up&Down Group. Because of our studio moving to Gangnam from Mok-Dong, official referees went to the team house of each player and the Wild Card Group was held online.
MVP_Keen took first place and secured his position in Code S.

F and G for groups of death this time around, I'd say. No real weak group either, so this is going to be awesome. Just one more week of GSL-abstinence... I can handle it.
omfg finally! A ro32 that has kickass groups all around again. I mean the amount of skill in gsl has been insane for awhile now, but the ro32 doesn't usually have so many sick matchups that get me pumped right out the gate.
A: BomberVacs, a kespa champ, one of the few protoss remaining...and crazy (not too exciting, but he's good though)
B: WTF
C: Not as insane but still pretty pumped
D: Fantasy vs Taeja and the Catzerg!
E: Symbol vs Squirtle...again. Both very intelligent players, I look forward to their HotS play.
F: The group of death? Yeah looks like it I wonder what the next grou--
G: ....The best group period. Also the real group of death. Life vs Leenock for the 83982983 time...maybe they can save hots zvz. Also PartinG in another group with Life o.O. Potential rematch for Last against Life too. Just stories all around
H: Maru vs Flash please. Prodigious terran battle.
And the best part is....for the most part I have no idea wtf to expect so not many predictions. Not many group favorites immediately jump out at me this time. Well...except for maybe Bogus
I kept asking myself Where the heck is MVP?!? Then I remembered.... Code S just looks strange without him. xD Still, those are some really strong groups. Should be epic!
Damn, those groups are all stacked, its looking like one fantastic season of GSL, what a better way to kick off the first HoTS, to bad we don't have Mvp in there... Still, we got Last, who has slowly grown on me and become one of the better terrans, his bio control and splits rival that of MKP at times.
Leeeeeet's go Life! Time to kill Parting for last season, and crush Leenock to make sure that rivalry becomes a beatdown. If Last shows up, well, he died once - why not twice?
Group A - Roro and Creator (unless Bomber magically steamrolls them, making it Roro and Bomber) Group B - Flying and Yoda (unless MC and Dongraegu get their shit together) Group C - Curious and sOs Group D - Taeja and Fantasy or Fantasy and Losira if Taeja's wrists aren't good enough for intense micro Group E - Symbol and Squirtle Group F - Innovation and Rain Group G - Parting and Life (haha, funny that they'd meet each other yet again) Group H - Soulkey and Flash
Once more I will root for Prime. I hope they will show great games and won't disappoint Also gogo Flash, Gumiho and Losira(Kangho)!! I hope Last will also destroy his group just because he is huge underdog
Damn... Groups are amazing, every group is exciting as hell! I just feel sad that we have Gumiho and Innovation in the same group, and Leenock and Life in the same group again... :/

Yeah wow it's so cool and badass to be a flat track bully yo!
Anyway, I shall predict, and I make Artosis look prescient.
Group A: Bomber + Roro Creator's style doesn't work in PvT nearly as well anymore, Polt crushed him recently and Bomber is just as good, if not a better TvP player.
Group B: MC + Yoda MC is MC, Yoda is looking fearsome in HoTS thus far. Apparently Z are having a hard time vs the other races of late in HoTS so I'll go with that
Group C: Curious + MarineKing Could be any of them really, but going with who I know
Group D: Taeja and Fantasy Just a hunch, Taeja was top 5 Terran for the end of WoL, and Fantasy is Fantasy
Group E: KeeN and Squirtle There are no bad players in Code S, but I see Symbol going on a mini-slump after losing the Code S final. Keen's vZ is much better than his vP, Squirtle's vZ is pretty tight too so I can see those two focusing hardcore on the two vZs in the group.
Group F: Innovation and Rain 1. Bogus man. 2. Because Rain doesn't have to practice all three matchups I give him a small edge over Gumi
Group G: Life and Last Parting's vZ is the most overrated in WoL's history, masked by his WonWonWon build and I think we'll see that borne out here. Equally, Life is probably the world's best player atm, and Last is an excellent player.
Group H: Flash and Soulkey Maru may be about to have a breakthrough, but if it wasn't for his youth he wouldn't be given half the slack he is. He's shown great talent at times, but truth be told has never done anything of note bar some amazing micro plays. LiquidHerO has a GSL Ro8 and Ro4 to his name, but has his results called into question, Maru I think has only made the Ro16 once. Flash is no flash in the pan, he looks a beast already and Soulkey is the epitome of boring, decent Zerg and those guys tend to get through

Rain and Last received the seeds for being the top finishers in the last OSL not currently in Code S, Blizzard is going to announce how OSL and GSL will work together this year next week.

Good for him. Look up 'fanboy' in the dictionary if you're going to call me one.
Excited to see some true code S vs. code S HOTS. But also really disappointed that the best player of WOL doesn't get a seed while Rain and Last do. Also because if MVP got the 2nd seed then group G would have been the craziest group ever.
I'm a huge MVP fan myself, but I just don't see how he deserves a seed. Rain won OSL and Last "won" MLG (only semifinalist who's not in Code S anyway) while MVP didn't do anything to warrant a Code S seed. He'll have to fight his way back through qualifiers and Code A, I don't think that's a bad thing.

Mvp needs no charity seeds. But to say Last somehow deserves it and has had better results is absurd, he only got 1 round further than Mvp in MLG and had an easier route/bracket. After that, he's done nothing since 4rd at OSL. There are many many better players with more results that deserve to be there than Last, who really got there because of the big plans coming.
those groups, multiple ones could become a group of death if the players show their A-game... A, B, F but i think G the most of all. Also, Taeja vs Fantasy!!! tho i have to work that day, fml

And he's also the highest end player of that OSL that wasnt in code S yet - MC, DRG and Rain all are in code S. Tho I'd say MVP also had a shot at it, he was top 8 MLG and semi-finals in IEM, and imo he was the 2nd best player at IEM after Yoda, just wrong side of the bracket. Lot can be said, nothing will be done, so im just looking forward to Last proving he deserves it!

... and Protoss once again are as abundant as xenon compounds, completely absent in two groups.
Choosing between group F and G for Group of Death. Going with group F, it feels like all four are good and evenly matched, unlike group G where Last fits in very well, but not in the competetive way.

If I counted right the Kespa players now account for nearly half (15 [players) of the Code S spots. That number of course counts Parting. Anyways go Parting, MC, Life!!!
Looking forward to group F the most, even though all the other groups seem to be interesting as well (especially group G). Can't for this season anymore...
A: Roro, Bomber B: DRG, MC C: phew, hard one. I'd say Curious and MarineKing (in solidarity to esF) D: ouch, hard one again: Losira and Taeja will make it though E: Symbol, Squirtle (I'd love to see Keen upsetting that group though) F: Inno-fuckin'-vation, Rain (c'mon GuMiHo, prove me false) G: Life, Parting/Leenock (Haha, Last being underdog, great!) H: Flash, Soulkey/B4

They reset the ranking points for 2013.
I don't think it makes a difference in this case but I don't know if they should do this every year to be honest. Everything in Code S has continuity, resetting ranking points doesn't make sense IMO, since there's already point decay.
He is in a group with Zergs he has beaten with that MarineKing flair, going aggressive mech. I am not in the least worried about his vP matchup, he took those with fashion in the up and downs.
On the flipside, some new Code A kespa warriors in code S. Looks we are in for a treat
I'm just a bit worried about my terranbros MaruPrime and GuMiHo, I'll keep cheering !

good groups though
He was 4th in OSL, which made him the second highest finisher who wasn't already in Code S. GSL apparently will now have mutual seeding with OSL, which will be announced in greater detail on April 3.

I don't know if they reset points or not but tier one is always the eight players who made the round of eight, points ranking doesn't come into play until you get to the next three tiers.
After compiling the rating of all the Code S players, congratulations on those who voted Group G as group of death. It is indeed the overall strongest group, followed by Group F.

Technically he would have been tier 2 without a point reset because Tier 1 is just top 8 of the previous GSL and Life was eliminated in the Ro16
How the hell did froup G even happen??? Doesn't GOM have a player ranking/seeding system? How can 3 of the top 10 be in one group? This is ridiculous. Meanwhile Group D happens, where True and Fantasy have never even been in Code S and Losira is the worst player this season. How??? Also, groups B and E are amazing.

The ranking system is listed Tier 1: PartinG - Top 8 previous GSL Tier 2: Life - Top 8 in points that didn't finish in top 8 of the last GSL Tier 3: Leenock - rank 9-16 in points that didn't finish in the top 8 of last GSL Tier 4: Last - bottom 8 in points that didnt finish in top 8 of last GSL
Since the point system was reset for 2013 it basically goes like this for the current season Tier 1: Season 1 top 8 Tier 2: Season 1 Ro16 Tier 3: Season 1 Ro32 eliminated players and people who advanced through the last round of Code A to round it out Tier 4: People from Code A, Up and Downs, and seeds

Still ridiculous. Any other sports tournament takes several seasons of results into consideration. Even when there are drastic rule changes, like in HotS. I wouldn't normally mind so much, but I don't have the time to watch all the good players in the Ro32, but I would in Ro16, because it's far fewer games. Therefore I'd like to see good players advance. Instead, in half of these groups at least one scrub will advance in favor of great players in other groups.
Seeing how the qualification group went, Effort should have lost on purpose against Noblesse to increase his teammates BByong's chances of advancing. If BByong won his last match, he would still advance as #1 but in case of a loss it would have become a 3-way tie instead of Keen advancing directly.

I'm pumped, HOTS Code S will be insanely good, I can't wait to see what they have in store for us. The groups are rather balanced, at this stage it's impossible to pick a group of death in my opinion, the game is too new and the player still have a lot of possible BO and strats to play that we don't know about.
On a side note, imagine that not so long ago we thought a foreigner could do well in Code S. Naniwa, Huk, Stephano, at some point we pretty much all thought they had a slim chance to be competitive at that level.
Now we have only 2 players from foreign teams, no foreigners at all, and no one who showed a play convincing enough to even enter code S. I hope our guys will catch up soon, I must admit I have more fun when everyone is playing the same game, for now we are spectators.

Wouldn't that be match-fixing of some kind...
Yeah, but nothing you can ever remotely prove. If my team mate was in that situation, I'd let my macro and micro slip here and there just a bit, play a bit more safe than necessary and that is all it takes to lose a game on this level.

And of course this is what sportsmanship is all about. I think everyone in korea is well aware that they need everything but another match fixing scandal.

That just goes to show that those guys actually are professionals.
At this point GSL should get a different classification on Liquipedia then the other premier tournaments, the combined skill of all participants is just insane. IMO every group could become a death group, if the players bring their A-game and a few prepared strats. Getting the GSL year pass is unavoidable.
Should have given Noblesse the seed. His U&D were the only ones worth watching, despite how depressing it may have been... Also, G is not the group of death simply because Leenock will be 4th in group and the other 3 are a toss up! Though, F is close to the same with Gumiho, I do believe they are all better at HotS than Leenock. @below Yes... I know, but he seriously outclassed BOTH the zergs and ended up losing in a tie-breaker to them in some of the worst matches I had ever seen in SC2. (In the Up and Downs).

Flying is in the tournament too. I'd say he's probably playing like a tier 2 player lately doing much better than he was before. I might even say that sOs is borderline tier 1 with his performance in proleague. He's 18-8 just 1 win behind Flash
There are two things i am sure of about this code S. First, sOs will be at least in the ro8, anyone thinking otherwise is a fool. Second, the amount of underestimating of Last here is silly. He is favored against leenock, and i am confident he would beat parting. The only question of group g is who will come first, life or last?

Flying is in the tournament too. I'd say he's probably playing like a tier 2 player lately doing much better than he was before. I might even say that sOs is borderline tier 1 with his performance in proleague. He's 18-8 just 1 win behind Flash
Oops, I knew I forgot someone. I'd put him tier 3 so there are 4 in each tier and because he can play abysmal from time to time. I also think he had a pretty sick streak of getting buildorder advantages but maybe I am unfair there.
Group A - Bomber Creator Group B - MC YoDa/DRG Group C - MKP Soo Group D - Fantasy KangHo Group E - Squirtle Symbol Group F - Innovation Rain Group G - Life Last Group H - Flash Maru

Those are my predictions
Looks reasonable. Imagine: All these players on the SAME team with 20 decent training partners, competent coaches and enough funding.
Group A: RorO, Creator Group B: MC, YoDa Group C: Curious, sOs Group D: FanTaSy, TRUE Group E: KeeN, Squirtle Group F: INnoVation, GuMiho Group G: Life, last Group H: flash, Soulkey
this is what my first instincts are telling me, but I guess it's subject to change if I look at their records a bit more.
I wonder what shape Fantasy will be in when he plays. He had an awful streak for quite some time, but managed to break it just in time to get to Code S. Will be interesting to see where he is now.

Medivac speed is like an upgrade specifically designed for Fanta so maybe he gets something going.

That's true. For him and Gumiho. Will be fun to see how much they can abuse it.

hes probably spending this off-season at his hometown and regain some strength
Symbol and Keen both in the group with Squirtle. I don't think the group is very tough at all for Squirtle but its just interesting since Squirtle has some history with both of them.

Mvp should have done better in the osl.
Well to be fair that was when both the GSL (which he won) and the OSL were going at the same. Combine this with his broken wrists its hardly surprising.
Such power in Group G. I hope people don't count out Last, though, he's pretty good. Group B, two favorites MC and DRG but the best-player-in-the-world-according-to-IM.MVP "Yoda" is in there. I think I really should watch Code S and follow closely this time. However, I've said that for awhile and never actually done anything.

Im worrying for the health of these players, i dont even play in korea or korean level, but still notice the tempo of the game has increased in the current meta, no safe zones. this will be pure madness.
All of these groups are stacked honestly, but in my eyes, F and G are the most stacked in terms of sheer talent.
A: RorO, Bomber B: DRG, YoDa C: Curious, sOs D: TaeJa, KangHo E: Squirtle, Symbol F: INoVation, HyuN (I'm not particularly impressed by Rain recently, and HyuN can always dominate at his best) G: Life, PartinG H: Soulkey, Flash
I want to give my predictions, but I feel like I'll fail miserably because I dont think we've seen enough of anyone to judge especially because theres only been foreign events.

TommyP's predictions: DRG 2-0 his group. everything else irrelevant. Maybe some MVP player wins
edit: i just realized MVP only has 2 players in Code S O_o I thought it was more

yea, it was only DRG until Keen won that wild card group. There are like 4-5 MVP players in Code A though and I think Noblesse will get back to Code S soon too
and I think DRG's group will be tough for him, im scared ;(

Why do people bother to predict matches when they just pick all the favourites? :p
Not really a matter of favorites about HyuN, but just that HyuN has been impressive in HotS so far compared to Rain.

I didn't say you picked your favourites. You picked THE favourites.
Ah, I see, thanks for the clarification. Well, they are the favorites for a reason :p

My super epic awesome predictions: Group A: 1st - Roro & 2nd - Crazy Group B: 1st - Flying & 2nd - DongRaeGu Group C: 1st - soO & 2nd - sOs Group D: 1st - Fantasy & 2nd - Taeja Group E: 1st - Squirtle & 2nd - Symbol Group F: 1st - Innovation & 2nd - Rain Group G: 1st - Life & 2nd - Last Group H: 1st - Flash & 2nd - Soulkey
From there I think the Ro8 will boil down to: Innovation, Life, Flash, Fantasy, sOs, Rain, Soulkey, and Roro
From there I think the Ro4 will boil down to: Innovation, Life, Flash, and sOs
I believe the finals will be between Life & Innovation where Innovation wins in an epic 7 game series :D

I will allow this. Though I rather it be Flash in the finals.

Mvp needs to qualify again, unless a seed appears for some reason. He lost his Code S group, then fell out of Code A. I feel sorry for all the good players who are trying for Code A, only to see Mvp in their bracket.

I know that many of the Kespa players are phenomenal but I think there is a very small chance only 1 out of ro8 will be an ESF player. I have a feeling players like Gumiho, Yoda and Leenock are going to excel this season and make ro8.

Stephano decided to relinquish his code S spot and return home.
