Aphrodite and Eve are both players who have been consistently competitive in the SC2 scene since the beginning. They've never been able to get into a GSL or step up on the stage together but they've both established results within female only tournaments and have been raising their skills.
The minute this news was announced that two female gamers would be opening off the GSTL pre season, the community gave quite the excited responses. The fact that two female pro gamers were going to be opening up the first ever HotS GSTL and the fact that a lot of fans have been eagerly anticipating both players performances since they have been known to hold tremendous talent, seen through their streams, all adds up to why this event will be so significant.
So far, neither players have actually ever faced off against each other in Korea before. However, they did play each other during the 2012 Iron Lady Leetgion Tournament back in April, where Aphrodite took down Eve twice and then went on to take second place after losing to Scarlett in the finals.
Are people really gonna watch them play, cause this makes me not want to watch it at all. Not because they're female but even if it was two low skill (comparatively) male players I wouldn't watch

It's the preseason. You're probably going to be seeing a lot of B teamers. except for Prime who is starting Marineking for some reason
my money is on Aphrodite, when she streams she's legitimately good, and has won a few tournaments (female only), Eve, has literally never been seen in a game ever except when she had to play terran instead of toss in the final SlayerS GSTL match.
oh shit, this is going to be good. One of them will be the Unofficial HotS champion for at least one game. Pretty cool that they get first blood, smart pr move by esf.

Prime needs the money. MKP is going to steamroll if this is all-kill format
GOM still has "$ TDB / Available Soon" as price for GSTL - weird. Aphrodite wins easy. This event is categorized as "showmatch", yet there's some monetary award, and yet they pre-arrange team pairs and team first picks like that - I mean, this was obviously pre-arranged with these teams, and didn't occur just randomly. Weird stuff, if you ask me, but I'll tune in! :D
This will probably be fun to watch. I wonder how good Eve is with protoss. I just hope they both actually practice in the teamhouses and the match is on at least a somewhat decent level.

How good is Aphrodite? I've heard things all over the map.
she has lost to scarlett in at least one all female competition pretty decisively as I recall. She didn't look terrible but wores-than-scarlett would be a fair assessment of her skill I'd say.

Aphrodite is actually quite good. Can at least take ladder games off some really good players once in awhile. Even if they are just ladder games.
Ya, saw her win a crazy micro game against Vines once. I'm sure she wins other players regularly, we just don't know about it. Regardless, I have never been so stoked for a GSTL event. For over a year now, I've been really wanting to see them play. Pretty awesome they are getting their chance finally, and what better than a face-off? w00t ^__^

probably more likely that Prime is trying to capitalize on other teams sending B teamers to try and win the money like the other guy said
On February 14 2013 18:07 Mahanaim wrote: Sorry to say this, but Aphrodite should win Eve no problem. The skill difference that has been displayed is not negligible XD
Yeah I'm actually looking forward to see the game after that. It will be interesting to see how good Aphrodite is compared to male pros. Who knows, maybe she can become the tossgirl of sc2.
This will probably get twice as many usual GSTL viewers.
Heart of the Swarm debut with two girls? It's a fun preseason tournament with players getting used to Heart of the Swarm. It'll probably have a lot of introduction to the game, units, and prepare people for the transition. Expect lots of one base games, funny matches and B-teamers getting booth experience.
I'm fine with Aphrodite getting a game in the booth. She's been with Startale for over a year now, and she is pretty damn good. She probably couldn't beat any of the Korean players, but she played Stork in a qualifying match sometime back and didn't look too bad. If Eve isn't a lot better Protoss than she is Terran, Aphrodite should roll.
I'm firmly on the "Aphrodite will destroy Eve" side of this match. I'm highly impressed with the PR move here and the additional recognition of female gamers. Hopefully this engenders (hah) more female viewership.
Hopefully the games are interesting despite the consensus that the match is one-sided.
Although this is a really nice PR move, it's not a as "stupid" as you all think. Eve and Aphrodite are legitimately SC2 pros, whether you want to accept that or not. Neither of them have a single game in the booth, so their booth experience is nothing. This is the preseason. The time when you get your players warming up to get ready to give it their all in the season.
Ever watch the preseason of any pro sport? You have really silly games, and really big blowouts occur for stupid reasons.
This is a good move to give Eve, who stated that she wants to compete at a fully professional level, and not act as a PR representative, as well as Aphrodite, who is the #1 female player behind Scarlett who has never been in a GSL booth.
Although this won't be top GM play (KR server GM...), this will be fun to watch for several reasons. 1) We get to see how far along these players are since the last time we saw them. 2) We get to watch some unique games.
Don't forget this isn't just female vs female. This also means female vs male in the second game. This allows for a potential HUGE upset.
All these little factors are included rather than just looking at it as a PR move. Let's support eSports and all watch the games and give our civilized feedback ^_^

It's not like FXO sent out a B teamer too. It's more of a unique thing between ST and AZUBU. Expect those teams to put up the real guns too, after the girls've been eliminated.

This is awesome news! Really cool to see them give them a chance! I'm a huge fan of both players. I feel Aphrodite has got this, but I'd love to see a close match.
PR stunt or not, gender aside, I'm happy to see B teamers sent out. HotS is a clean break. It's a perfect time to give lesser known players some booth and screen time and see how they grow with the challenge.

I agree. And HotS is a young enough game where any player can pull off some interesting plays; they don't have to be #1 in the world to impress the crowd or even pull an upset.
Isn't Aphrodite infinitely better than Eve though? I haven't actually seen either of them play, but Liquipedia makes it sound like Aphrodite is genuinely able to compete with foreigners and other Code B caliber Koreans, whereas Eve was something of a publicity stunt (not trying to flame, that's just genuinely what it sounds like from what I've read).
I don't want to be rude but... wasn't Eve a gold player ? Why so much attention on her ? I really don't understand.
If women want to be considered equal to men in eSports, they should commit as much as men. I prefer watching Maddelisk or Flo who are players who works hard to improve themself.
The Starcraft 2 community doesn't need drama queens like KellyMILKIES.

It's one single game in a fun tournament on an unstable beta server in a game that's not figured out and has loads of new stuff to catch anyone and everyone off guard.
The drama queens we don't need are people like you who'll blow up over stupid shit. And who's to say these two haven't been working hard to improve themselves anyway?
hey cool! i missed slayer's final gstl matches so i didn't get to see eve play her game. she must have a lot of confidence to do this against aphrodite (she's pretty good you know!). i think it'll be a fun, if not good-looking, way to kick the new season off in hots.

In the Iron Lady Leetgion tournament (pretty much the only tourney that Eve played in that I know of) she beat both Maddelisk and Flo. Granted that was a while ago and she lost twice to Aphrodite, but she's certainly not awful.

Can't wait to see EVE play ! Missed the previous GSTL match she played, but im sure as hell not going to this time! No alcohol this weekend! ALARMCLOCK ON!
Aphrodite needs more exposure. Sure her and Eve don't play at the level normally seen in gstl but shes a very solid player (mid-high KR master?) and girls deserve more starcraft heroes to identify with.
I just clicked into Eve's TLPD out of curiosity and the first thing I read is, "Started his career for Cascade."
I guess that whole use the same template for every progamer only works if they're all guys haha.
Either way, great PR move by both teams, or by GOMTV, and it should be fun to watch. I imagine though that Aphrodite is probably going to smash Eve, she's actually quite good. But either way I don't see them combining for more than one win.

I am simply stating information that was provided by Artosis. I guess if you want to call it a PR stunt, you can. The teams are entertainers as well as groups of competitive players. Every sport does this sort of stuff and doesn't have to be anything more that teams putting on a show for the fans.

Ya, saw her win a crazy micro game against Vines once. I'm sure she wins other players regularly, we just don't know about it. Regardless, I have never been so stoked for a GSTL event. For over a year now, I've been really wanting to see them play. Pretty awesome they are getting their chance finally, and what better than a face-off? w00t ^__^
well, now that i have found out she wins ladder games....against Vines of all people....i will ignore the fact that they both have done nothing of note in their entire sc2 careers. its a joke, pr stunt.

not really. i'll watch and enjoy (hopefully). but im just calling it like it is and am amazed at people who actually think this is serious.
People are just excited about it, why rain on their parade from your ivory tower?
i stated my opinion, and people chose to respond with bullshit ("oh, they are really good, its not a pr stunt"). i decided to call out their bullshit. i, for one, am excited to see aphrodite play on the big stage, but it still is what it is: a pr stunt to showcase the females. people can say i am negative all they want, but i choose to be honest about it.
There was a movie with a rabbit and a deer has something about saying something nice or not talking, but I can't remember exactly...I think it applies. Does it really matter if the players are top teir and can qualify for code S? As long as the game is fun and people enjoy it, it does not matter.

I completely agree with you, they are in the booth because they are female, it is not because they almost qualified for code S. Why does it matter? There are no female pro gamers in the scene at all beyond Scarlett and none in Korea that I am aware of. There is no women's only league either, like many professional other professional sports. If both teams want to feature what they feel are highly skilled female players, there is nothing incorrect or bad about that. It is a preseason league and if they are going to feature a couple of the few female pro gamers in Korea, more power to them.

Would have have the same issue if it was Scarlett vs one of them? I do agree it is a PR stunt, but then again it is just pre-season.
I understand where some people are coming from, but all I see is teams giving them a chance to play in a tournament that they don't really get a chance to play in. I think it's a great opportunity for both players. Really looking forward to it.

Give me a break. Aphrodite and Eve are arguably two of the best female pro gamers in the world. It'll be good to see how well they do on live GSL.

Actually I guess I missed making my point more-so than who is in the booth this is the pre-season. In most every pre-season and even during old BW team leagues, some lower level pros were put out in matches to test how they would fair when the pressure was on. This is the time to test your supposedly less talented players and let them make a name for themselves. If you don't do it now, then there isn't a reason to have them on your team.

Have other girls done anything of note in their sc2 careers? Are there other girl pros who have won tournaments and made headway in the scene besides 'Scarlett'? Hmm so this is kind of a first isn't it? You should be encouraging it not demoralizing pro females in Starcraft. This community doesn't need naysayers like you guys. Since these two teams are the only teams with high level girl players...Its sort of fitting that they can open with each of them. Adds hype and it's pretty badass for me and other girls part of the GOSC.
P.S. Either of these girls would stomp any of you 1v1
This is blatantly just a PR move by GomTV and the teams to try to get people to watch GSTL more. Honestly having this kick off the match feels more like mud wrestling then professional gaming.
Not a knock against women in gaming, just that they clearly didn't earn the right to be showcased in this way by beating anyone. I can't imagine a world in which either team would consciously make this decision thinking, 'this is our best chance to win'. If anything a match like this feels counter productive to women in gaming, as they are being used as more of a novelty then serious competitors.

if you think its demoralizing to realize that they are only putting them on the stand because they are females then you're going to have a tough time in this world. thats absolutely what they are doing.
p.s. too bad they cant stomp anyone who plays the game professionally.
edit: i just remember where i have seen your name. you were the one who disapproved of scarlett joining the girl's group. maybe you should be more supportive of transgender with legitimate talent, and get off your high horse.
Good luck to the girls, eSports needs more females, and I don't mean females bringing out trophies or handing out awards and just doing interviews. Good on the teams and gsl for setting this up.
If eSports really wants the big time sponsorship and to grow in the west, reaching the female audience would be the fastest way to grow.

P.S. Either of these girls would stomp any of you 1v1
if you think its demoralizing to realize that they are only putting them on the stand because they are females then you're going to have a tough time in this world. thats absolutely what they are doing.
p.s. too bad they cant stomp anyone who plays the game professionally.
Dude you do know that they are masters or higher on korea ladder right... That means taking games off professionals. The way you are categorizing this as a PR stunt and a joke throughout this thread IS demoralizing, son.. and Vines used to play professionally right? sorry i may be confused but its probably you just being stupid.

Get off my high horse? before i go along with you derailing this thread, id like to say that i 'did' have a problem with her joining the group and getting so much attention for the Ironlady cup. Since then i have come to respect scarlet as a person and highly skilled player. Then seeing her take a game off DRG just affirmed my newfound respect for her. Not to mention that none of this has anything to do with the issue at hand. Isn't it lovely that people can grow and change there minds about things. Maybe you should do the same about this situation

She is a female fan of SC2 who is a big fan of EG, because they retweet her quite often. And I am with her on the subject that players should encourage women to join teams and play. If the two players were male, but totally unknown, we would not be having this discussion at all. The only reason you object to them being put out there is because they are women and that is the only reason they are playing the booth. It may be a factor, but you are wrong to assume it is the only reason. The community needs to get over it as a whole.

I'm confused as to what other factors you think are putting these girls in the booth. They clearly aren't the best players on their respective teams, and there is certainly at least one player on both teams who would make a better starter than either of them.
I don't actually care that they put girls out there; it doesn't bother me. But let's not pretend there are "other factors" behind this beyond their femininity.

No, electronic-sports does not NEED more of females. Females NEEDS to get better at gaming. We shouldn't put pressure on them to compete, this process should be spontaneous.

I think they are playing because they are girls but what i believe is that there is nothing wrong with it. In fact, i wholly support it because we want more girls in the scene right? I mean do we really want a sausage fest? They may not be the best players on their teams.. but i think they are maybe the best girl players in Korea. I don't even think there are other girls on pro teams besides maybe Maddelisk and Flo. There may be more that i don't know of, but that's the point. We need to get them playing more.
For me at the end of the day; It isn't a 'PR stunt' or a 'Joke'. Its more of a good idea and a way to hype the tournament and bring more girls into the fold.

people. pr stunts arent bad. they are smart. as someone mentioned earlier in this thread, this will get a lot of views because people want to see some girl on girl action. there is nothing wrong with it, or the teams playing their females. but call a spade a spade for christ's sake.

A PR stunt is having the star of your TV show jump over a shark to boost ratings, getting married only to sell DVDs of the wedding and TV coverage then getting divorced the next day, having two people geting in a fist fight outside your store to get newspaper coverage. All of these are PR stunts that really happened.
Having two masters level players play SC2 on stage is not a stunt. Having them get in a cat fight on stage would be.
I agree with SotG in that this shouldn't even be drama or news in the first place. Posting a thread is nothing but baiting.
Yes it's likely a publicity stunt, but so what? It's in a fun pre-season tourney for a beta of a game for a fairly meager amount of money, during which some of the teams' top players will be off playing in the IPL ESF seeding tourney anyway. It's not even part of the proper GSTL season. Find more important things to complain about, please.

Becasue this is TL and we fight about stupid shit and love drama. If anyone is on stage at the GSL, I demend they be a professional SC2 player. This includes translators and other memebers of the production crew. No one who isn't a least masters level should be on that stage. If there are going to be female gamers playing, they need to have beaten at least 15 Code A players in best of sevens to even be in the booth. The replays from those games need to be provided to the public as well, to make sure that its true and that the code A players didn't throw the games because the girls are pretty.

Pretty awesome they are getting their chance finally, and what better than a face-off? w00t ^__^
well, now that i have found out she wins ladder games....against Vines of all people....i will ignore the fact that they both have done nothing of note in their entire sc2 careers. its a joke, pr stunt.
P.S. Either of these girls would stomp any of you 1v1
if you think its demoralizing to realize that they are only putting them on the stand because they are females then you're going to have a tough time in this world. thats absolutely what they are doing.
p.s. too bad they cant stomp anyone who plays the game professionally.
edit: i just remember where i have seen your name. you were the one who disapproved of scarlett joining the girl's group. maybe you should be more supportive of transgender with legitimate talent, and get off your high horse.
For me at the end of the day; It isn't a 'PR stunt' or a 'Joke'. Its more of a good idea and a way to hype the tournament and bring more girls into the fold.
Isn't that the exact definition of a PR stunt?
A PR stunt is having the star of your TV show jump over a shark to boost ratings, getting married only to sell DVDs of the wedding and TV coverage then getting divorced the next day, having two people geting in a fist fight outside your store to get newspaper coverage. All of these are PR stunts that really happened.
Having two masters level players play SC2 on stage is not a stunt. Having them get in a cat fight on stage would be.
its sad that it has come to this:
"A publicity stunt is a planned event designed to attract the public's attention to the event's organizers or their cause."
if you want to quibble over words though, i originally called it a PR move if that will quell the outrage at calling a spade a spade.
And besides, to the point complain about them using the girls as publicity tools and the immorality of it...
Lets be honest. It's very unlikely that Eve and Aphrodite were ever going to play normally. They aren't close to A-team GSTL material, and will probably never qualify for the GSL. But it's a fact that they are trying to make it as professional players, and that means they want to play. I mean heck, they wouldn't be on a damn team in the first place if they didn't want to play. So now that they are given the chance to play, the only chance they may have ever in fact, in the GSL booth, regardless of the "circumstances", you want to decry it and deny them that exposure?
Any chance is better than no chance, and I can only see this as a good thing for them. I would be shocked if they weren't really excited for this chance to represent their team.

I think part of the problem that people have was that you felt the need to point it out in the first place, including myself. People are not so dumb that they don't understand that these two players are not top teir, but we all want to encourage women to feel comfortable in the scene. We all want to be encouraging and just enjoy the preseason, which doesn't truely matter. Yet for some reason, people felt the need to point out "You know, those girls arn't the best there is. They are put up their for PR and media reason", like people did not know that already. Then comes the debate that has happened 100 times before and we all been part of. It is old, it has happened before and we all want it to stop, because its a dumb argument.

Well then, don't whine or talk down to people when they respond very negatively to that opinion, because that is what is going to happen. If you are set on stirring up useless drama, don't expect people to respect your decision to do so. And if people call that opinion flat out stupid or borderline sexist, you shouldn't be surprised.

It is as dumb as when people complained why some girl was on SotG when she wasn't an SC2 pro, or why some girl on the floor is interviewing people when she doesn't know build orders. It is old, it has happened before and we all want it to stop, because its a dumb argument.
then dont respond.
I think you missing the point of my post, which was: You first. Please restrain you need to educate the community as to the "truth" of these matches and why the players are playing.
nope. i will continue to post my opinion. it is a discussion board after all. if you dont like the opinion, you can either ignore it or respond to it. choose your poison.
Nicely worded, because my choice of poison will be ricin rather than go through this trite argument again. You're not contributing anything worthwhile, but i guess it's your time to waste.
i continue it for as long as it amuses me. the faux outrage is quite amusing if i do say so myself. i'll leave now though. its been fun.
Dream Forge Mapmaking is excited to see these players battle it out on one of ours and another western community made maps. GL and HF to both Aphrodite and Eve! GL and HF to Lucky and MKP!

Or for added irony he ignores their hair completely but then talks about it extensively for the first male player they send in.
its funny how people talk about eve and aph skill lvl......they are all above the GM skill cap on NA/EURO Aphrodite has been GM on WOL in Korea serveral for years, and practices with star tale players.....She is one of the "real" females that has a shot @ gsl code a ect, All Both of these players are top notch players, Eve prob a bit less but they sure can play good games.
Dumb people in this thread have no clue how skilled Aphrodite is.I bet if they sent Aphrodite to USA @ some tourney she clean house vs all the foreign pros. So dumb kids think the two teams are doing this for views, Both are very skilled players, Bet 95% of people in this thread has never even seen them play real games.

we'll see. The little I've seen from her wasn't too impressing, but it also was a long time ago, so she might've improved a lot despite the lack of results.
Eve is probably going to be coming out with some crazy cheese against Aphrodite, though given how Terran is in HotS it may be Aphrodite who really lays on the early aggression. Either way, if Aphrodite loses she won't be crying in the booth, she's way more of a stone cold killer than Eve.
Seeing that it's HOTS I actually doubt that Aphrodite can take the game if Eve cheeses but then again she might actually want to play it out in a macro game.
Hopefully Aphrodite will kick her ass, shes the best female SC2 gamer out there. + Show Spoiler +
Yes I know Scarlett and Puck/Leiya but yeah you know.. nothing against them.
ST hwiting!
Psyched to see what kind of crazy cheeses we'll see.

yay go aphrodite really looking forward to that. i'm desperate for builds to steal, still build a wooping amount of zero hots units so far. here's to hoping that gstl will change that

She actually switched some time ago, it's just that GSL doesn't let you race-pick and Slayers never changed her registration. And this is HoTS, I don't think Terrans are automatically underdogs anymore...

jk tossgirl was gud. just not gud enough
wonder if the girls would actually get to be as good as the guys? would like that. i know scarlett is already a monster player.
My guess is that if / when as many females dedicated to become progamer, their skill would be on par.
Unfortunately I don't see an increase in the number of female gamers happening. Gaming communities including this one are pretty hostile to females, likely because of the prevalence of males who are very inexperienced with them irl.
I remember a rumor that it took Eve 7months after joining the team slayers to reach master league. Aphrodite was a mid masters (rank ~30) player for as long as I followed her.
