NOTE: I looked for a similar thread the first pages of general but couldn't find one, so figured I'd make a thread.
Appearently, Stephano's tweet about getting a knife onto the plane to Korea got more attention than he most likely previously thought it would.
Sweden's biggest newspaper, Aftonbladet, picked up on the "news" and wrote an article about it. They also didn't hesitate to put in more information than just the knife-incident - they pretty much summed up everything questionable that Stephano ever did. You know what they say though - there is no such thing as bad publicity.
You can find the article HERE. The page is in Swedish however.
I don't know if I'm allowed to translate it, but if someone feels like translating, I can always edit the OP.
EDIT:
Translation by iLose4u:
"The French e-sport star Ilyes "Stephano" Satouri, 19, knows how to make headlines. The other day he brought a knife on board an airplane - and tweeted about it.
Ilyes Satouri is one of Europe's most succesful"StarCraft" player, but also one of the most controversial. During last year's DreamHack Summer Satouri visited the nightclub "Silver" in Jönköping where he got so intoxicated that the police had to apprehend him. In October, the Frenchman's club, "Evil Geniuses", suspended him for a month for making a joke about having sex with minors. "I want to sincerely apologize to all my fans, my teammates, Evil Geniuses and their sponsors for my comments. They were insensitive, inappropriate and out-of-bounds. The serious consequences they have had for me are justified. I take full responsibility for my mistake and I will be more careful in the future, stated Satouri.

I could put up a translation, just not sure if that's some copyright whatever issue.

Considering contemporary tabloid culture in some countries, this really shouldn't be a big deal.
|
It should be mentioned that this is in the gaming section of the online paper, not like the front page of it or something. True Aftonbladet journalism though ; )
|
Wow. I think I can speak for the majority of us when I say that was really unexpected.
|
lol i just used the auto translation seemed pretty accurate but wow just wow. Stephano man i love watching you play but how dumb can u be to post a picture on twitter of u in an airplanes bathroom holding a knife u "accidentally" got onto the plane. I don't think its a big deal cause it doesn't bother me but for anyone who doesn't know what starcraft is or who this stephano is will prob be pissed.

Stephano does indeed make some weird decisions from time to time but I don't see how this one can cause much trouble anyway... It's the airline problem after all, he didn't try to do shit with it.
|
just google translate the page, it's good enough. Short summary: Stephano tweeted a pic of him with a knife on a plane. This isn't the first time he has done something retarded. He got arrested/thrown out of a club in sweden and said on live stream that he had sex with minors.
|
I think I missed something here...I can see why some would make it a big deal, but first off, really? Really, Stephano? Why make jokes in public about getting a knife on a plane? The stupidity of some people....

I meant in the paper version, but sure.

Ah, Aftonbladet never fails to "impress" me. Pret-ty slow on the ball, and generelly quite shitty in terms of quality and well... everything.

Oh look journalists blowing things entirely out of proportion, never thought I'd see that in my lifetime

Impressive. - so my Swedish friends informed me it's not the greatest 'newspaper'.

Yes, it is a tabloid, and very shitty one indeed. I'm constantly amazed that people actually read that paper.

Stephano doesn't seem like the brightest person out there... He's good at Starcraft but not very good at the more important game called "life"... and no, money isn't everything in this game called "life"...
|
Well of course, duh... He is flying to South Korea after all. Even if he were to abduct a plane and try crashing it into one of their skyscrapers, he'll realize that Korean SimCity is just too good. But even before that, I expect Airforce Ace to dispatch one of their squads and shoot the plane down. The free falling innocent passengers will then be saved by single microed parachute commandos.
That is, of course, in case Reach doesn't feel like stopping the plane with his bare hands.

Naniwa, Thorzain and SortOf has been featured several times before in this paper, in a very positive manner. I believe they've been on the frontpage aswell. Just wanted to make that clear so people don't think they ONLY bring up bad things about eSports. Having said that, however , their overall quality of journalism is pretty bad.

if airlines/airports don't want people to go on airplanes with knifes, it is their responsibility to make sure nobody gets on an airplane with a fucking knife. the only thing that could be considered shocking here is that airport security at wherever Stephano entered that plane is apparently lax.

Calling Aftonbladet "swedens biggest 'news'paper" is kinda far from the truth. Kvällsposten (Aftonbladet, expressen etc) has always been closer to gossip tabloids rather than news.

Ignorance is bliss..
I could say it doesn't make any sense if people get upset over someone using the N word but people do and i respect that.
I honestly don't think its a big deal but i can understand why it would upset people, you shouldn't have a knife on a plane let alone taking a picture of it.

Even though I don't think he should've done this, I agree that airport security is hypocrite incarnate. Alot of noise, with no effect. There are foolproof ways to smuggle knives onto planes.

This is why we can't have nice things. The french already have a bad reputation abroad. Stephano's behavior isn't helping here (neither is that newspaper article)

What makes you think he took the knife on to the plane in the name of humour? It was an accident. And there's nothing wrong, and certainly nothing for people to get all insulted about, that he draws attention to how ridiculous it is that someone can accidentally walk on to a plane with a knife.

Star armed with knife on airplane - tweeted picture proof
The French e-sport superstar Stephano, 19, knows how to make headlines. The other day he brought a knife on an airplane - and tweeted about it.
Ilyes Satouri is one of Europe's most successful StarCraft players, but also one of the most controversial. During last year's Dreamhack Summer Satouri visited the night club Sliver in Jönköping where he got so intoxicated he had to be taken care of by police. This October the French's team, Evil Geniuses, decided to suspend him for a month. The reason to this was that he had, on air, been joking about sex with minors. -- I honestly want to apologize to all of my fans, my teammates, Evil Geniuses and their sponsors for my comments. They were unsensitive, inappropriate and way over the line. The serious consequences these have had for me is justified. I take full responsibility for my mistakes and I will be more careful in the future, said Satouri.
Tweeted picture of knife That carefulness lasted barely three months. The other day Stephano left France for StarCraft-blessed South Korea. On the airplane Satouri visited the toilet and took a picture of the knife he had brought with his hand luggage. The frenchman posted the picture on Twitter and wrote: "I managed to fly armed with a knife. I didn't even try to do it, so I can just imagine how easy it would be for a Bad Guy to do it." The tweet has since then been deleted but in a later post the frenchman explains that it was never his intention to carry a weapon on board. "I have to point out that the knife was in my hand luggage by mistake, haha".
Not a smart move Ilyes Satouris venture made the CEO of Dreamhack, Robert Ohlén, tweet a greeting to Stephano: "Not a smart move young padawan, to photo yourself with a weapon on an airplane and post it on Twitter."
"It shows", Satouri replied, "how innocent and harmless I am (and also what an idiot I can be from time to time)".

Because there's not other means of mass transportation that are much more easily taken control of and do the same amount of damage? Sorry, this shit is hilarious. And shows how little airport security matters. The picture doesn't hurt him in any way. It might do something to the airline though. All in all it's something miniscule that everyone is making a big deal about because of shit in the past. We will be attacked again, it's only a matter of time. You're delusional if you think otherwise. Might as well laugh at small shit like this instead of correlate it to other things that have happened.

Funny or stupid, he should have some interesting trips through airport security going forward.

Yeah, I don't think people here realize how anal the TSA can be (even through social media) or they're too young to realize that proving "rightness" to an authority doesn't mean anything.
Forgetting about a knife and taking it on board is fine. Tweeting a picture of it pulled out inside the airplane is problematic (it's a weapon and doing it with any weapon would be problematic.) Doing it in the mirror so your frizzy hair and iPhone are in the shot, instead of just taking a picture of the knife, kind of makes you an idiot. I'm sure someone from /vg/, reddit and the like have already tried reporting it.
The whole thing is simply not worth the risk (which is why he deleted the tweets.)

Thats incredibly stupid. Not so much accidently taking the knife (realy accidently and not some sort of bet?) But even more so advertising it to the whole world. No clue what he could gain from that,he could easily have ended up in jail.

I don't care if Stephano gets drunk on a swedish club, stabs a minor with his 'knife' and then really stabs a minor with his knife which he may or may not have brought on a plane, I just wanna see him smash nerd face in the GSL

So dumb. What is the point of tweeting a pic of a knife on a plane? What a rebel. -_-
Just a stupid decision. I know he's young but he should act older than a 14 year old kid. (shrug)

in4 cnn making a video about sc2 players are "murders"

RLY STEPHANO!?>!?!

SC2 doesn't need bad publicity like this. It's a shame that they go above and beyond to correlate violence in video games/movies and try to say it has an impact on the behavior in the kinds of atrocities like in the elementary school tragedy over in Newtown. Quite a stretch of the imagination to think that the correlation not only puts the blame on FPS games (or any game for that matter), but to throw SC2 under that bus also doesn't follow logically. Apparently he played some SC2 (that Newtown murderer did that is), because playing an RTS in space somehow inspires people to do stupid things. Sad stuff. Even if a correlation existed which would be a stretch, correlation isn't equal to causation. I would hope that there isn't a big enough sample size of atrocities to get a statistically significant read on this, but if there were I wouldn't be surprised if this whole kind of argument was thrown out the window.
Anyhow sorry if I side-stepped the direct issue at hand a bit, but I think these issues deserved to be mentioned as an aside in relation to this situation here with Stephano. Hopefully people don't begin to draw a negative image of SC2 and/or e-sports from overblown trivial matters like this. Professional gamers need to step up their game in defending the image of gaming, and improving their mannerism to continue to promote/grow e-sports. I think overall a job has been well done, and I am not trying to imply that Stephano failed in this regard in absolute terms. I think poor judgment was demonstrated and it was a foolish error on Stephanos' to post the picture on Twitter. I also think it is unfair to butcher him for a relatively trivial mistake in the grand scheme, but there's no need to overstate it and aim to put a negative perception/connotation to the game that he plays as well. (By overstating, I mean I think the media may have done this but I did not read the article so I cannot be sure. I just assume some of the stuff mentioned in this thread was accurate.) I am thinking people that encounter the article will not assume negatively of Stephano or SC2 overall if/when they do some of their own research on what he and e-sports in a greater sense truly entail. Hopefully the questionable situation can turn into a trigger for spreading the exposure of e-sports by making people curious to examine it (even by a flawed pretense) rather than give it a negative perception by default without further examination (I know I am a bit optimistic. heh.)
Please note: I made a few assumptions of what the article contained based on the context ITT, I didn't actually read the article since it wasn't available in English. Figured it was worth mentioning in case the tone of my post was somehow out of line, it seems to be accurate though.

lol thats not being a rebel thats just being stupid especially with the terrorism that has happened via planes in the past decade. People are mega sensitive to this kind of thing assuming that airplanes are weapons free of any kind. They won't read his tweet and say "thank god hes showing the air lines that they need to step up their security!". Most people are going to say wtf is someone bragging about having gotten a knife on the plane whether its accidental or on purpose. If its accidental keep it to yourself, no need to tell thousands of people.
