Prepare yourself for worldwide competition, as Global Play will be added to StarCraft II in an upcoming patch in the coming months.

Global Play will give you access to StarCraft II game servers in regions outside your own, expanding the possibilities for eSports, exposing you to maps and games that aren’t yet published everywhere, and making it easy to play with your friends in other parts of the world. Each region will have separate profile data, meaning that characters, profiles, ladder rankings, progress, and friends lists will not carry over from region to region. With Global Play, you’ll have other regions to choose from as you create new characters, take on different ladder opponents, and perhaps try maps that you’ve never seen before.

More about Global Play:
  • Players will be able to freely switch between regions via the StarCraft II login screen.
  • When your region’s game servers are undergoing maintenance, you may be able to play in a different region that is not down for maintenance.
  • Your game language and user interface will not change when you change regions.
  • Players using Global Play will be subject to the in-game policies of their selected play region.

We’ll have more details soon, including answers to your most frequently asked questions about Global Play.

If this is anything like DIII Global Play then it's going to be slightly cumbersome and annoying. At least they are making it possible now.

I like this, however, i somehow have a silly feeling that everyone is just going to play on the korean server?

i mean it kind of depends on the lag you get i guess, but i would think most people would go where the competition is fiercest..

what do you guys think?

So what does this mean for the age restrictions in Korea that prohibit playing past a certain time for those under a certain age? Will it be easier to circumvent those restrictions?

Not to an extreme degree. I have a NA and KOR account and I use the NA account exclusively because (1) since I'm masters I can get just-as-good practice on either server and (2) the latency is notable enough to be annoying to play with regularly.

Nah, you have to realize a lot of people don't want to get rolled alot as it's pretty discouraging. The korean server is just a step above, I imagine a lot of people will try and then go back to NA/EU after getting crushed a few times after their initial 5 games to get placed.

Also latency, some people get bad latency (I am lucky to not have that problem). This will discourage a lot of people from playing on korea as well.

Nice to see blizzard add this before hots though.
When I think of something else, something will go here

Cool, nice addition. SC2 is getting the things Blizzards former games have slowly
Furthermore, I think the Collosi should be removed! (Zorgaz -Terran/AbrA-Random/Zorg-Dota2) Guineapigs <3

Does anyone know exactly how much geography affects ping cross-server? Like, if I'm on the US west coast and have a decent connection (30+ mb/s) will I be able to play on KR without much lag?
omnipotence...got to get me some of that

So who else will be installing the Korean client to play with on the EU/US servers?

Also, what about those of us who already own SC2 of multiple regions will we have 2 "characters" per server?

theoretically you can have a "profile" on all servers for each account.

so if you have a KR, EU and NA account, you could have 3 "profiles" on each server.

Doesn't this also solve the laddering as 3 races problem?

You can ladder P on NA, T on EU and Z on KR.

Or on the bad side, idiots can main on their own server and troll bronzes on the other two.

Am I understanding this correctly?

Bandwidth has nothing to do with latency. West coast US should be playable on KR with minimal extra latency, Central / East US and Europe will likely be laggy.
