Haven't seen the thread up for this huge news so:

Axiom ESports

https://twitter.com/axiomesports

Website (coming soon!)
http://www.axiomesports.com/

Relevant reddit article:
http://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/10jeya/axiom_esports_headed_by_tb_and_wife_jenna_will/

So far AxCrank is confirmed. http://twitter.com/AxCranK/status/251129647461462018
TotalBiscuit and Husky are sponsors of the team. http://twitter.com/HuskyStarcraft/status/251134899560542210
Genna, team's owner (TB's wife), tweeted as well:

Quote by TB on what events AxCrank will attend in the near future:
Thanks for the support folks, it's heartening.
You will be seeing CranK at the following events.
MLG vs Proleague (CranK was a former STX and SKT Brood War player so this is the perfect tournament for him)
MLG Dallas - We'll be flying him out for this
IPL 5 - CranK qualified for this event in Vegas so you'll be seeing him there too.
And perhaps a couple of other unannounced events...

Quote by Genna on relevant reddit post on future roster on the team Axiom:
We are currently working on identifying potential sponsorship avenues. There are a lot of people wanting to speak to us on the matter, thus we felt comfortable with making the announcement. As of right now, we are pleased to have CranK as our first member of the team. We will be adding to the roster as things progress. I won't really commit to saying that the team will be 100% Korean but I would like the team to serve both TB and my hopes of bettering the state of eSports in Korea. At present many Korean SC2 players do not actually receive a salary or receive a small salary that does not really support a stable career.

Great news, love seeing more of TB and his initiatives in e-Sports like this. I really want this team to expand so more players like CranK can be revealed.

I'm happy Genna's intiative is coming to life.

Nothing said about that. TB have hinted it will probably be Korean dominated though so I'm not sure how bling fits in that. That doesn't mean they can't continue to sponsor him outside of the team, who knows.

Totalbiscuit and Husky as sponsor's? That is enough potential marketing to rival teamliquid and EG.

Also congrats to Crank.

Does TB and Husky really make enough money to fund a team by themselves?

Wow, had no idea YouTube paid that much.

Wonder who they will pick up, some really good teamless players right now.

AxAxslav and AxAxeltoss would be fun to say, but really doubting that's going to happen. Genna stated that she wants to better the state of Korean eSport teams, so I'm guessing the team will have mostly Korean players.

Fucking amazing. While TB makes money through esports, he gives back a whole lot. You don't need to do it and few people do that, so this is amazing. I remember TB criticizing the work ethic of other foreign teams; so I expect good things to come!!

Ooohh - this is exciting! What an interesting (and in my opinion good) ideal! It really is a shame how many Korean players are limited because they do not have the proper support. If this is successful, I can't imagine what kind of breakout players we will see =)

Great job TB, wife, and Husky. Can't wait to see what follows!

P.S. Congrats to Crank. Very happy for him too. What a nice guy =)

It's more likely they'll add one player at a time at a slow pace. I very much doubt they'll add a bunch of more players right away unless they get a few more sponsors on board. You can make a decent living off youtube with the size of his following but I doubt it's a sustainable in the long run for a bigger team (he's also got a family to support).

TB said it on Twitter: doing an event as a caster is actually less income than working for his youtube channel.

I think Husky owns TheGameStation network which has yogscast, TB, Day9 and hundreds of other channels so I imagine he has more than a decent amount of cash in the bank but TB has said they will be looking to get sponsors.

"My role is to leverage our media network to make the team more visible and attract sponsors. That's about it."

My prediction for a player is Ryung as he and Crank are very close.

TB and crew contributing to the scene yet again. They do an absolutely insane amount of stuff. Casting, sponsoring, making good ideas, making good tournaments and now a team?
Can anyone think of people who've done more that aren't part of the veteran crowd?

Husky's actually the co-founder with another guy, and he hasn't had a full time job for a while I believe (in contrast with some of the less popular channels that have announcements about "quitting" TGS and their day job for a full-time job on youtube).

He probably doesn't own TGS though, it'd be kind of weird "being the boss of your roommate" like a fan had thought before getting a reply that basically laughed the idea off (I think it was Dodger's twitter).

AFAIK TGS is kinda child company to Maker Studios, which is big company.
Husky was at the conception of project - but the means came from Maker Studios.

About funding: YT can make good money for living, but not nearly enough for eSport team, not even if you take TGS in consideration. Therefore they really need sponsors (ideally with US-AND-Korea market) to keep team running.

TB and Genna said they want give salary to players which is something not common in Korea right now.
And IIRC sending ONE player at MLG cost in thousands of dollars... No way they could keep it up with just YT channel. (With consideration, that TB is _loosing money_ by doing SC2 content.)
Broken english FTW.

What exactly is maker studios? Not much info on their webiste since like tgs, it's more of a sign up page. From what I can tell it looks to be a collection of youtube channels as well like machinima, whereas tgs is like that too except it's gaming focused. Is it like jtv/twitch? Maker studios for general youtube channels and tgs for gaming focused ones?

Does TB and Husky really make enough money to fund a team by themselves?

Wow, had no idea YouTube paid that much.

Wonder who they will pick up, some really good teamless players right now.

I think Husky owns TheGameStation network which has yogscast, TB and hundreds of other channels so I imagine he has more than a decent amount of cash in the bank but TB has said they will be looking to get sponsors.

"My role is to leverage our media network to make the team more visible and attract sponsors. That's about it."

My prediction for a player is Ryung as he and Crank are very close.

Husky doesn't own TheGameStation. He works there full time as a partner I believe.

Not too much info about Maker Studios online and it's kinda Off Topic here, but something here: Wiki page of Maker Studios

I am slightly skeptic about this. I mean Id o not doubt that they have their heart in the right place.

But TB doesn't understadn how Korean E-sports works, and that could cause some problems in the future if he isn't willing to make some compromises when it comes to his players.

Like I worry a bit about him trying to get players from teams that are in Korean teams already, such as Ryung and others. Doing this would cause some tension as well, as Korean teams are rather paranoid about this, since they don't have the funds foreign teams have. They always fear their players are going to be poached. TB needs to be careful about this.

plus I do wonder how exactly will they build this team, other than taking well established talents from other teams, how will they actually raise new talents up? Do they have a coach or telent scout in Korea actually looking for the teamless amatuers that may very well be the next big things. Thats what Koreans teams do now, and thats why they have been successful.

Like I said before, I don't doubt their intentions, but I do rather doubt that they know the right way to go about it in Korea, and not step on any other Korean teams toes. I know when Fnatic came to Korea, they stepped on a lot of people's toes, and got a number to people to dislike them. I worry TB might end up doing the same, not on purpose, but just out of lack of understanding.

TB has the same kind of esports and street cred that Nazgul does and thus I can see him and husky managing to both pick up great players and have a team beloved by the masses. I've been waiting for TB to get in the team game for a long time, everything he does and says screams to me that this is a guy who should be running a team, I know he sucks at the game but he knows the business. Hopefully he will hire someone as a coach for the players to use, I suppose somewhat like TL use Nazgul, a sounding board, a fresh pair of eyes.

Great work my british brother!

There is actually another company called Axiom Sports too :/ keeping the Esports in the title will probably help with any possible legal problems.

eSports isn't technically in the name. The team name is Axiom and we'd hope that it's announced as such on casts. However, for trademark reasons and distinguishing ourselves from other organizations called Axiom, we put eSports in there (also because you can't get axiom.com)

The team is Axiom, except when we need it to be Axiom eSports for legal reasons

I can't see this ever becoming an issue. Axiom Sports has just over a dozen athletes under its name, some of which don't actually play any more.

I'm super stoked about the momentum they have to start out with. Hopefully this snowballs until this humble beginning is a comical notion looking back.

I'm interested to see if this extends beyond sc2 pros. And even more intriguing, beyond players (casters/hosts/shows/production/team tourney/NA-EU-KR houses...?)

No matter what its a pretty sweet idea. As long as no Korean management gets wind of their intent, I'm looking forward to seeing a new "Korean" powerhouse team.

This is neat. I've always felt that if i was someone within the ESPORTS of any notoriety whatsoever, and some money, one of the things i'd love to do would be to run a small team and have a tight knit group of good players to promote and care for.

Just seems like fun.

GOOD LUCK~!

With TBs fanbase and platform to promote on youtube it will be very interesting to see what can happen and with TBs plans for allowing sponsors more and more exposure in game i can only see good things for sponsors who want to assocaiate with Axiom.

The concern is stepping on the toes of other teams. We have no intention of poaching from other teams. NSH is in trouble right now but it is not dead. We would rather be in friendly competition with Korean teams and attempt to approach the scene diplomatically. The team should be viewed as not only a legitimate organisation but also a gesture that we wish to be part of and enrich the Korean scene rather than scavenge and take away from it.

Also ManZenith would be a good pick-up. Known name in foreign community, good player still, and has the talent to do well in foreign tournaments if given the chance.

good luck Genna and TB. This might make GSL a lot more interesting for many foreigners to watch. I can totally see myself rooting for koreans i am maybe not a fan of yet, just because they play under Ax in the future. Peoply might say it's ignorant to watch esports for names first and not quality, but that's how it is in my opinion.

whatever gogo axiom!

Great news, only if they're Axiom E-sports, it saddens me that they would shorten it to Ax[Name] instead of Axe[Name] or AxE[Name] (the English spelling, which still fits with the team name), but then they're living in the U.S.A so maybe that's why?

Uhh it saddens you that their teams name doesn't have an E in it so they didn't use an E in their tag? o.o

This will bring me out of my posting hiatus. I'm so glad this is happening. I've always thought for a very long time that there were so many Korean players who could walk into any tournament in the world and make an amazing showing, but are instead are stuck as Code-B no-salary players simply because we have a community that focuses more on fancy little story lines than the best possible Starcraft 2 skill. This give me an incredible amount of respect for TB and Genna, Added on top of the already huge amount held.

Love the initiative, I've been waiting to see it happen since the first "maybe" tweets.

Plus I like that it helps the interest for CranK to stay alive after the whole "CynicalCrank" from Raleigh.

Wow this is huge commitments from TB and Genna to the SC2 scene! This, together with the Bling sponsorship and the SCI tourneys show how wrong all those people were about TB being in SC2 for the money.

I also saw the LO3 episode where Slasher mentions the team's formation, http://www.twitch.tv/onemoregametv/b/333582570 (around 2:05:39). I know if this is diverging from the topic but Slasher also speculates on what seems to be Slayers future a few minutes later.

The team is Axiom, except when we need it to be Axiom eSports for legal reasons

*isclaimer: NOT legal advice! Rely on this at your own risk, as it's meant as background information only. If you have legal issues, contact and contract with an attorney for proper consultation.

Occasionally using "Axiom eSports" won't make much of a difference for trademark matters (other than registration for the simple wordmark; your logos are obviously clearly distinguishable). In the US (and more or less similarly in the EU and Korea), what matters is whether people encountering the name "Axiom" as you'll use it are likely to be confused as to whether that is your Axiom or one of the others. Assuming your closest same-name is Axiom Sports & Entertainment, I don't think there's much of a chance that a court would find consumers likely to be confused. They're a talent management agency (i.e. a PR firm) for professional athletes (primarily soccer players) and sports broadcasters. They hook up their talent with other companies who want to use them in advertising campaigns. You're a sponsor and organizer for a professional Starcraft 2 esports team. You support your talent directly and have your banner flown while they actually perform their profession. Your advertising and product delivery channels are completely different, your target audience is completely different, the products/services you're "selling" are completely different. And if a court were somehow pursuaded that consumers were likely to be confused, the off-hand usage with "esports" really wouldn't do much good--how different from "Sports & Entertainment" is "eSports"? To an old man behind a bench, probably not much.

-Your Friendly Neighborhood IP Lawyer

PS: Good for you guys! I do wonder how you'll be able to maintain your casting impartiality. This is kind of like John Madden (famous football coach/sportscaster) buying a stake in the Oakland Raiders (football team). I would expect that he would just want to talk about the Raiders all the time and only broadcast their games and somehow work talking about them into every other broadcast he did. (Yes, I realize he doesn't broadcast anymore, this is just an example.)

1) Cynical Brit has specific negative connotations that don't have any place being applied to an eSports team. Cynical is a negative adjective. It works for the channel because the channel is about critique, it doesn't work for a team
2) It's not just Cynical Brit, Husky is a sponsor.

Personally I think that it would be better to sponsor an existing team in Korea. At first I though it was strange that FXO bought fOu but it turned out really well because FXO offered better management and financial stability. It’s the same reason I don’t like cherry-picking Korean players by foreigner teams instead of supporting a team as a whole.

Yeah but that's just being nakedly pro-foreigner without any other purpose other than being pro-foreigner. Heck I'm that just because I'm not Korean, and I'd love to see someone else win GSL one day. For TB/Husky there is the potential (not saying it will happen, of course) for the casts to be skewed for self-serving purposes. I think that would turn a lot of people off out of the sliminess of it, and possibly degrade the product by diverting their focus from what makes people tune in now.

Genna/Biscuit/Husky wanna start there own brand and it's admirable. They probably could have just eaten up the HoSeo team if they REALLY wanted, but they would probably have to cut most of the prospects and it would be stepping on a team's toes that is trying to survive.

fOu and FXO was just a perfect storm. FXO had the money, but not a strong team that could compete in Korea, and fOu was a middling team with no money, but could become a very strong team if their financial woes were cured. Choya and Boss came together at the right time and created now a GSTL champion.

I'm interested to see what happens to Axiom. I wouldn't mind seeing a new Korean GSTL team.

I don't really get it because it seems to me that the Korean starcraft 2 scene has more money, players and opportunities compared to every counterpart abroad. There are tons of players or teams who can't afford travel+hotel+other expenses at an MLG that are foreigners. I think that the only team that is serving the foreigners really well are EG as they are willing to spend top dollars to facilitate, train and market the best foreigner talent.

Apollo, tastetosis, rotterdam and many others have been or are connected to teams. I fail to see why this would be a bigger deal than for any other caster.

From what I do understand, Choya and BoSS had met each other while BoSS was in Korea, and BoSS took a liking to Choya, BoSS offered Choya a personal sponsorship to that MLG. Choya then I think approached BoSS about sponsoring/buying fOu and turning it into FXO.

For this to happen again, the only team I would have seen doing that would have been Zenex, I think NSHS couldn't because New star academy in Seoul hosts the team, so a name change could not be possible.

I think that would turn a lot of people off out of the sliminess of it, and possibly degrade the product by diverting their focus from what makes people tune in now.

the way people were turned off from Tastosis because of their hyping of Nestea, and Artosis random kiss of death for on-the-cusp-and-could-be-great-but-then-just-disappears-players?

God dammit, TB. You've been killin' it for e-sports since your first ShoutCraft Invitational and Genna seems to be doing big things too (before this I only knew her as your wife who was super nice in the LR thread for that first tournament).

Apollo, tastetosis, rotterdam and many others have been or are connected to teams. I fail to see why this would be a bigger deal than for any other caster.

Yeah dignitas.apollo, ROOTerdam, RootAxeltoss, Gosu.Gretorp, GosuDoa, x6.Axslav, Quantic.Gwin, EGIncontrol (and a lesser degree Idra) there are lots of Caster/Team relationships.

I hope u guys understand that Genna is the one who owns the team... she is the CEO, she also came herself up with the name. TB has very little to do with that, other then being a sponsor.

Where Im going with this is that Genna should get a lot more Credit than TB since its her team!

Ryung is rumoured to of left the SlayerS house - first posted on the LG-IM vs SlayerS preview post last week.

If you're to speculate which Koreans could be recruited Ryung could be a valid rumour, the list isn't huge because there isn't many teamless big name Koreans at all but Freaky could be another name unless he retired for good.

CranK is known only because SlayerS gave him exposure and created conditions to grow and become, what he is today, player with perspectives. He left SlayerS, and that wasn't clean exit, there was some drama. If I remember well he claimed there are some health issues with his neck or something like that. And now TB picks him up. Convenient. No love from me for this new team, but good luck nevertheless.

Teams tried poaching Crank at last MLG but they refused a translator for him which is absurd and just for that I'm not surprised he didn't persue their interests.

Awesome news! I'm glad that TB and Husky are exploring this kind of thing. It does seem like a natural progression for TB after he started sponsoring Bling and helped to get Crank to MLG Summer championship. Best of luck guys I hope to you at many events in the future!

I wouldn't call it absurd. It's a sign of desperation. Imo when BoxeR entered SC2 and created SlayerS he had idea of team, that is more then a team, a family, and SlayerS were known for this family atmosphere. As time went by many players left SlayerS for foreign teams just for money Some exits were clean, some not. I think BoxeR realized that for players family team < money, and he left, back to old school Korean teams.

ROOT is a good example of team being more then just a lineup of people, who still managed to hold on together. I just value different things I guess so...

Really ? Would you hire a player that can't speak english ? Probably not.

It's really beyond me how the scene keeps providing korean players with accommodations just because they are koreans and can't to speak english - which is hilarious when they live in one of the best educational sytem in the world. Did koreans help the foreign BW scene ? Yeah ...

You're kidding, right? You honestly think a single team on this planet would refuse to pick up players from the biggest pool of amazing talent in the world for the sake of not wanting to have a translator on call?

There are valid reasons for foreign teams not picking up Korean players, but I don't think language barrier is a very convincing one.

He showed very little bias during the games he cast of his during |MLG Raleigh when he bankrolled his attendance. You seem to be forgetting other casters associations with teams.

Ironically, I would say the most biased caster is mrbitter and he has zero affiliations with any team. He is a good caster but when he casts foreign players against koreans he is quite clearly sad when they lose, especially zerg players like Idra (mrbitter plays zerg).

It's really beyond me how the scene keeps providing korean players with accommodations just because they are koreans and can't to speak english - which is hilarious when they live in one of the best educational sytem in the world. Did koreans help the foreign BW scene ? Yeah ...

This post and the other guy's post has made me lose faith in humanity, honestly it's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

If a Korean came upto you right now with pen and paper and started pointing at the dotted line, would you sign it? If yes you're an idiot because you could be signing your life away, you could be but you don't know because you don't understand fucking Korean - That's Crank's state of mind when teams approached him without a Translator.

Convenient. No love from me for this new team, but good luck nevertheless.

So you're one of those e-sports fans who think that making money is voodoo? Money is good, Slayers had contracts, all ''exits'' as you call them are clean as long as no contract has been broken.

I wish all the best to Axiom Esports, I always enjoyed TB and Husky!

Maybe this has been asked, but I don't want to read 14 pages. Does this present a conflict of interest for TB's (and to a lesser extent Husky's) casting career? Isn't it a bit awkward to be casting the games of a player who's team you own?

Ironically, I would say the most biased caster is mrbitter and he has zero affiliations with any team. He is a good caster but when he casts foreign players against koreans he is quite clearly sad when they lose, especially zerg players like Idra (mrbitter plays zerg).

Those guys are members of the team, not the owner though. As an owner, you'd have a vested interest in making your own players look superior, as its your own finances directly at risk. Conversely, you run the risk of making your own team look bad if you're critical of your own players.

Dunno, just seems a bit awkward to me.

Given the nature of how eSports is currently operated, a conflict of interest is a pretty common thing. While there are some shady details regarding some things/players/teams that don't need to be talked about, hopefully as we progress as a hobby, we will move away from this type of activity.

You forgot that Tastosis' webshop sponsors TSL. Not as direct of a connection as being part of the team, but clearly a conflict of interest.

I don’t see how that is that different that being on the same team. If you make your team look good or if your teammates do well, you attract more sponsors to your team and you in turn you get a better salary. Also you are more likely to be friends with your teammates than your employees.

Yeh, I just highlighted a few of the most obvious ones, most casters have some team association. For instance, DJwheat's twitch channel hosts the EGMC and his talk shows have a strong EG presence.

A good caster should be able to hide any bias he may have, if not, it is our job to pull them up on it.

That's a weird distinction. Why would someone that's being payed by a team be less interested in making their team look better? I fail to see why TB (who that have proven over and over again that he's not afraid to alienate people) would be less biased than any other caster or host that's involved with different teams and businesses.

I think it's fine, they can't really influence the performance of their players or change the tournament. If anything, stuff like TSL or EGMC look a bit more fishy on the surface because there's a chance brackets could be influenced, but given trigger-happy attitude of the community, I doubt anyone is really doing that, even though TL had to learn not to invite its players

Great to see TB, Genna and Husky helping to grow eSports and doing it right, thanks for your dedication. Can't wait to see the new team jerseys at big tournaments. Hopefully you grow solid roster with happy players who will have good environment to show off their skills and won't have to rely just on streaming to fund their income.

At present many Korean SC2 players do not actually receive a salary or receive a small salary that does not really support a stable career.

still, there needs to be one marketable foreign face in the lineup.

Its close to impossible to sell such a package without at least 1 foreign storyline to identify with.

Its a sad thing so many hard and professional working Korean players do not get any exposure/salary but lets face it:

You can have 10 A/S class Koris in the lineup and still people tune in the streams of the IdrAs and Stephanos out there.

And that is nothing anyone can cover, not even a TB and not a Husky.

anyways, best of luck to you guys -

E: btw I would be totally in for the job XD. I am cute on camera and shit too lol

Mh.. naaaa. I dont like that idea. Mostly because Husky is involved. I really started to dislike his work over the last year. So annoying, souch an incredibly pushy person.

but I would like the team to serve both TB and my hopes of bettering the state of eSports in Korea.

I dont give a shit about improving the state of eSports in Korea. I would try to improve the state of eSports in my own country instead. A mixed team is a good choice if you are able to overcome the language barriere you can really draw out a good amount of potential. But why wouldnt you want to see your country being able to compete with the top level Koreans?

What exactly do you want? Except for easy money?

Its close to impossible to sell such a package without at least 1 foreign storyline to identify with.

Its a sad thing so many hard and professional working Korean players do not get any exposure/salary but lets face it:

You can have 10 A/S class Koris in the lineup and still people tune in the streams of the IdrAs and Stephanos out there.

And that is nothing anyone can cover, not even a TB and not a Husky.

anyways, best of luck to you guys -

E: btw I would be totally in for the job XD. I am cute on camera and shit too lol

I don't know. As far as I have understood things that is exactly the stigma they are trying to fight, and hiring a foreigner for that reason would undermine much of what their long term goals are. And I am not so sure having 100 % support from one of the most prominent figures in the gaming community, the casual as well as the competitive segment, is as weak of a selling point as you make it out to be. I am pretty sure Genna and TB have put a lot thought and effort into this.

That being said, I'm sure their first and foremost goal is to be a viable competitive team and I wish them all luck and hope they find a roster they are happy with.

but I would like the team to serve both TB and my hopes of bettering the state of eSports in Korea.

This effort isn't about giving undiscovered players a chance to grow, its about player who have proven themselves to be skilled but still do not have the support they deserve. If you are able to find a player on the same calibre as Crank or other Koreans but still don't have a team/sponsor/salary backing them then go ahead and point to that direction.

Also, TB has stated multiple times that he loses money when he does SC2 events and I would think that an SC2 team would be even more expensive than losing potential revenue from not making videos on his channel, so it is definitely not "easy money".

Quite frankly I find it hard to care about investing in the American SC2 scene when there are Koreans who have a higher skill level and are willing to work harder while not even getting paid a salary. Those guys deserve a salary.

You can be a middling foreigner and get paid a salary, you can be a fantastic Korean and not get paid a salary. How is that fair? There is plenty of money in the foreign scene, not to mention the money you can make streaming if you have a decent amount of skill and more personality than a plank of wood.

Him having a brand(his yt channel plus his casting) is what is able to make this happen, content producing is important.

Sure, but I would wager the majority of his fans and support come from non-SC2 casting (could be wrong but that's my guess from YT). It's like JP, he wasn't a good caster but he's doing an awesome job with content like Real Talk which you can't get anywhere else. TB's casting is ok but I think his other activities are much more productive and unique to him that are far more important than just filling in a caster seat.

So because some kids in Korea are raised in pathetic conditions sharing rooms with 4 other people and training all day long, the rest of the world should do the same ?

I don't have any problem with you sponsoring who you want but your reasoning is the principal reason there is thousands unemployed citizens all over europe. Yes there is ALWAYS people willing to accept worse conditions in other part of the world but that's no reason to accept that in our countries ...

I am very shocked by that rhetoric.

Personally I've always been somewhat surprised that you can somehow can be a full time progamer with a salary and when asked about training in an interview they can reply something along the lines of "Well, I have been kind of bored with Starcraft lately, so I haven't really played much."
If I told my boss I was kind of bored with my work so I haven't really bothered to do much lately he'd probably ask me if I shouldn't try to find another job.
Now to be fair I suppose a lot of it could be just talk and whatnot, but personally I would quit my job if I didn't like it.

It will be interesting to see where this goes, good luck to all involved.

I am shocked by your strawman argument (or I would be if I hadn't seen this attitude on a daily basis on the internet) because that isn't what I said at all. Perhaps you should re-read my post and properly comprehend it.

Why should we "support" American eSports just because we happen to live there? That's not a good reason at all.

Lol. Yeah no, it's not about the fact that Axiom is taking in the progamers who are "willing to accept worse conditions" than others, but rather about supporting the better players. Korean players on average practice more as well as more efficiently than their foreigner (and NA in particular) counterparts, which is why they are more skilled at the game. And by the looks of it, Axiom looks like it intends to be a team willing to cultivate and grow these lesser known talents from the korean scene and develop them into potential champion material.

Quite frankly I could not agree more with such a view. I mean if you enjoy watching a high diamond / low masters player who calls people faggots on his stream but is bad at the game, that is completely fine and it's your right to support him if you so desire. But I personally don't. I care about the more skilled player. At the moment, most of these players are korean, therefore I am more interested in them and I will support them and follow them.

More on-topic, I think this is a terrific idea and more or less a logical progression of things considering CranK's pre-existing personal sponsorship. TotalBiscuit, you are an amazing, amazing person and I have a tremendous amount of respect for you and gratitude for what you have done for the scene and just gaming in general. I wish you and Axiom the best of luck in your future endeavours and look forward to additional news (as well as seeing more of CranK's play hehe).

I just mentioned the easy money because with your connections(Yours, Huskys, Gennas,) your degree of publicity in the (Starcraft) Esports scene and the success you had in your latest projects, it makes it much easier to communicate and negotiate with possible sponsors. And as Genna stated in her reddit Q&A there have been lots of players that approached you.
And there is still a chance that the publicity you will gain may be enough to even out the financial problems in the long run. Even if it doesnt work out as you expected. You are having a huge loss in money in the beginning? Well, of course. Nearly every business faces this problem. No surprise at all.

It is the retarded way to think of people you would call "makers" or bankers if you want to go financial. People that see a chance, use a huge amount of resources they accumulated through hard work and try to get fun/profit/whatever out of their new discovered business. Is it envy from my side? Sure, this counts in too.
Why should i work for it. With my connections, and my possibilites i would never be able to start an esports team.

This is really cool, I really like the idea of trying to promote some of the unknown but really hard working korean pros. It makes a fair bit of sense as a follow up to the Bling sponsorship and sponsoring Crank to go to MLG. It's nice that you aren't ditching Bling's sponsorship as well. Best of luck to you and Crank.

Nice move, interested to see how this goes, and if others big in the community follow this kind of lead.

Also TB's putdowns of some of the more asinine comments in this thread made my day.

just provocative and honest
In the end it is just for the money, or publicity, and a little bit for fun and challnge, or whatever you want to call it. Even TB and friends cant afford such an expensive hobby as to own and manage an esports team.

The biggest problem will be the language barriere in my eyes.

Hah it really does. I think even a color change would do the trick, though I'm not the biggest fan of the logo. Now would be a good time to change it, and perhaps even let the SC2 community decide what the logo is with a competition. :D

Please, get the fuck out of this community, we do not need you here (though judging by your post count, I'm guessing you already got banned from TL at least once). This is 100% good news, there is absolutely nothing negative to draw from this. You are accusing TB of going for easy money? LOL what makes you think you have any clue of the likelihood of getting sponsors in esports and the amount of money sponsors are willing to commit? And what in God's name possessed you to come in here with unnecessary negativity? Are you sitting at work with nothing to do or something? Or you just like to bring down others for the satisfaction it gives you? What a child. Sorry to break it to you but just because you can say whatever you want on the internet doesn't make you powerful .

If we could just stop fighting for a second..

MLG vs Proleague

CranK is 4-2, that puts him second highest of ANY of the non-KESPA players. Only MC is doing better.

He went 2-0 against Light, 1-1 against Crazyhydra and 1-1 against Stats. How fucking sick is that? Already tearing it up against KESPA players.

Holy Hell, this is amazing! Whether this will work out in the long run or not, it is awesome to see what TB and his wife are doing for E-Sports, and the way Husky tackles his projects, this is somewhat of a dream-team when it comes to pulling in fans for a new team.

Of course they will want to get big-name sponsers to jump on as well, but I find the setup right now very intriguing, as it is almost self-sustaining. TB and Husky give to the community, and through that acquire resources to also set the stage for players? Sounds like full circle to me, which is kind of amazing.
You must defense your base.

She is probably better at SC2 than TB. She watches a lot of games and streams.
She knew about crank from watching his stream regularily before they sponsored his trip to MLG.
Yes, she has a clue about SC2.

From her reddit AMA:
RotterdaM is a genuine person and I really admire that. So many public figures let their own personalities hinder their greatness, but he just goes in, does his job and nothing changes. It's refreshing. He also talks to me about the games and players instead of trying to teach me about Starcraft, which I've had happen before. "Oh you're a girl, and you're watching Starcraft. That's so cute. Here let me explain what's happening so you can understand." At events, I spend 99% of it watching Starcraft and the rest doing the caster's makeup and arranging fan signings. I'm pretty sure I know something about the game by now.

Please, get the fuck out of this community,

As i already wrote, this was a fast and brainless provocation. Nothing more, nothing less. And it fulfilled its purpose.
Dude, stop with your "Leave Britney alone" comments, calm down.

What i see is: 2 guys with a huge popularity, suddenly start an interesting program. Of course they are feeding of their popularity and make good use of it, why shouldnt they. With Genna in the background who may have the knowledge to run an internet businesses (I dont know her at all so i cant judge her at all) this can work.
My doubts lie in the language barriere. You have a managing team of very popular foreign individuals which dont seem to have so many ties into the Korean scene (except for their commentating and casting point of view). It wil be very hard to get a good team together with a good amount of trust between the players and the managers especially when there is a langauge barriere.
Several translators may help, But this doesnt guarantee that the trust between players that (maybe) barely speak your language and the managers that probably cant speak barely korean at all, will grow to a good amount.

To put it frankly, (and you will probably hate me again for it lol) it has some sort of a sour taste me. Something like:
"Oh hey those koreans are good, they live in poor conditions. Lets help them and make good use of them"
"Oh hey, some popular foreigners with much money want us on our team to play sc2. Whatever, as long as they have money i dont give a shit"

Blablabla, you may find this insulting again, but not everybody has a healthy ethical correct attitude towards work.
With this trio this may not be the case, which means they actually do care. And i am glad if i am proven wrong on this matter.

From Gennas Reddit AMA (seriously, guys, read it. Most of the questions are answered there):
http://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/10kdhu/by_request_i_am_genna_bain_owner_of_axiom_ama/c6e7ujh

CranK's English is actually very good, even though he does not feel 100% confident in himself. I am in the process of engaging a tutor for him so that he can express himself with more ease at future events. I have also begun to learn a bit of Korean.

Looks like Genna is not the stupid person some people seem to assume her to be and has plans to alleviate the language problem.

If we have understood this correctly, and we have, it won't remain a single player team forever. They simply started with Crank, with whom they have had dealings with before (specifically, MLG Raleigh)

Well, it's not like it's the first.
To name a few precedents:
- SK (MC)
- Duckload (WhiteRa)
- Grubby (Grubby)

'Grubby' was never a team, it's the brand he uses to attract sponsors. Duckload was a personal sponsor, not a team.

Axiom has plans to recruit at least 3 players by the end of the year, and SK Gaming had and still has other players and teams playing under its name.

I may have misunderstood the subtlety of your post, nonetheless that wasn't a strawman argument.

Let's see it with your actual player Crank. He made his first professional game in November 2011. I don't know how much time he was on SlayerS before but probably at least 3 months. He left SlayerS in July 26th for medical reasons - reasons which you didn't said were resolved, a fact that some of us actually care about. So that's around 10 months were he was training 10 hours a day, leaving in a room with 4 other people for almost no salary. My standards may be higher than his but that's not how I envision a decent life. Let's fast forward to Crank's retirement. Let's say he had a great career filled with success lasting 6 years. He now has a reputation and can try to be involved with esports. His future is partly covered. You gave him a once in a lifetime opportunity. Now let's say he didn't have the same success, that he was good but didn't make enough fame or money to be able to transition safely towards another job. What's his future ? How he is going to live after that ?

On the other side of the world, foreigners are almost all students or in school. Those don't train as much for obvious reasons - and in this regards koreans train more. But those who take leave from uni to play the game are devoting as much time as the Koreans and it is unfair of you to describe them as lazy and undeserving when compared to Koreans - not what you said per se but clearly what you meant. As for the other, the one that train less than Koreans, they have reasons to do so, and it's mostly related to their studies. Let's not kid ourselves here, the future of foreign players looks bleak right now. Reconverting oneself into a caster is hard and is only a possibility for a few people and besides that there isn't much. So yes, some foreign players are training less than Koreans but I think it's a reasonable choice.

My worry is that if people like you aren't willing to invest money now so that we may have a future foreign scene, we are doomed because Koreans are willing to accept much worse living conditions than the vast majority of our talent pool in order to succeed - as shown by the main topic of this time OSL the dishwashers against the pros. And don't get me wrong, it's not a us versus them war. In fact it's about the future of our scene. You were vocal about the future of the foreign scene and yet you seem to have given up on our players.

Do CranK deserves a salary ? Hell yes ! He had a good MLG run and it's a good thing. But that doesn't mean other foreigners deserve it less. I firmly believe that it is possible to find a model in which we can train our players while still allowing them to continue their studies but there is none right now ... Koreans have a bigger and more talented player pool but that's because gaming is more accepted in Korea - insert a parallel with Sweden here - and they have the infrastructure to nurture those players. If nobody is willing to step up and look for a solution then we may as well give up everything now.

PS : I really appreciate the time you take to answer and react in the thread. And I regret and apologize to you if my answer was not complete enough to convey properly my opinion.

Good job it isn't my project then, which you'd know if you'd paid any attention to anything before posting.

What a mess your comment is, no proof, no reasoning, an underhanded, spiteful little accusation.

I was skeptical at first, but Genna's AMA made me optimistic about this new venture.

The road to success of a new SC2 team is long and full of hardships, but Genna and TB seem to be up for it.

I am very excited hearing about this team and will support it for sure. I rarely give a crap about foreign teams, but this one is definitely interesting because of the korean talent. Before someone mentions Fnatic or FXO(improving), I should mention they just don`t market their players very well to the foreign scene, and I think Axiom will be different.

lol at this argument. If Grubby decided to recruit players, he could. They would be Grubby.name. Just because he is his own brand doesn't mean all of a sudden it's not a team anymore.
If you join a tournament, many times it is considered team 1 vs team 2, (even though it's 1v1). Besides, Brands pick up players and sponsor them as teams too, your entire argument is one big hole. Duckload was a personal sponsor, but could have sponsored other players if they wanted to. But decided to stick with a team of 1.
Regardless of anything, MC recieves money from SK's sponsors, just like if Grubby picked up players, they would recieve money from Grubby's sponsors.

Grubby explicitly said a number of times, and I believe on Real Talk most recently, that "Grubby" is not a team, and that he would prefer to be officially referred to in tournaments as an "independent player", rather than "Team Grubby Grubby" (which was ridiculous in the first place and I think many tournaments have dropped it since).

Duckload is a company that has nothing to do with Starcraft. They pay one person to promote their company, similarly to the deal Mionix has with Naniwa, Ericsson had with TLO (while he was ON an actual team), and so on. In no universe does the act of sponsoring a player constitute the formation of a team.

Your argument that if these people and companies wanted to run teams, they could, is silly in and of itself. Of course they COULD run an actual team if they wanted to, but they choose not to, so they don't.

SK is a separate case, because they are an organization with an actual structure and management, and a number of players contracted to it over a multitude of games. Even so, calling it a Starcraft 2 team is not really correct either.

Yeah she prob knows more about starcraft than the average TL poster. I spoke with her a lot at PAX and she is a really awesome person. She is very involved in the community in so many ways and loves what she does. She sat there on a computer at pax and waited for this video to be rendered for 2 hours so that the content for TB's show could be put up for all the fans. They understand the industry well together as team which is what makes them awesome.

TB just a note your wife is definitely an amazing person. Very nice and friendly and really loves the community. Just thought I'd let you know.

Really looking forward to the results of this! Giving opportunity for more good players is awesome, Crank was already a great find.

I can't help but to think why are people arguing over this topic. Can't we all just agree that this helps the growth of e-sports and is good for EVERYONE involved? If TB and Husky want to invest in an e-sports team managed by Genna (if I understood correctly), what's wrong with it?

I can see only good things coming out of this and wish success for the future of Axiom Gaming.

edit: I'd just like to say that it's absurd to say that investing in a Korean players based team is going to hurt the foreign scene.

Nice to see that you probably didnt read anything i wrote at all except that one sentence. Troll? Nah.. just a tiny attention whore. And quite sceptical about all of this.
But people tend to forget to mention the negative sides of a coin. In this case it are the huge expectations which are nearly not proven to the community, Except for Crank maybe.. This team have potential if they get good sponsors.

Is it confirmed? I didn't hear anything from axiom yet.

AxRyung and potential AxMMA. This is like a reunion party for former SlayerS players or something?

The only thing we poach here at Axiom is our eggs. SlayerS closed on November 6th and everyone left the house. You cannot poach from a team that does not exist anymore.

poached eggs are quite delicious o: some sea salt on top of them and the yolk slightly runny...

I'm not going to lie total biscuit, until recently I was never a big fan of yours and I'll admit I couldn't stand watching any of your videos. In Starcraft I always assumed you had no idea what you were talking about, but just recently you've completely changed my impressions of you (your casting, especially with Apollo is awesome!) and what you're doing for some of the ex SlayerS players (like Ryung, one of my favourites) really shows how much you actually care about the commmunity. So thanks and keep up the good work <3

Best of luck with the team, but I do have a question. is it only me, or is Husky way less invested in this team than you are? He doesn't post about it, I haven't heard him talk about it. If you don't want to answer it's fine, but I'm curious. (BTW you should sign Curious if you get the chance ^^)

I wonder if Axiom would ever consider picking up a League of Legends team, if their ventures into professional gaming ends up working and sponsors are good.

I think TB said somewhere that moba teams are too expensive because you need a full lineup of 5 players all the time and that there are no plans on picking one up right now.

I'm not really involved in the Korean scene. Could someone please explain what happened to Ryung when he was picked up? :p Never heard of him before Axiom and now he's tearing up GSL... Was he this good before and I just happened to miss him all the time?

He was the least prominent terran on the terran powerhouse team Slayers. Then lots of drama happened with almost all the top players leaving. Ryung stayed and fought on as kind of the new top player, but has been unhappy for quite some time on the team. He´s always been good, but the focus was on other players. Now that he can play freely, he´s tearing shit up, not only in TvT, which always was his forté.

I will never forget Ryung's game versus Nestea on Whirlwind. If that is how you have to play terran versus zerg on that map I dunno who anyone can, yet somehow Ryung micros on 3 fronts and macros so hard. He's always been a great player and its awesome to see him make to a GSL semi! Hopefully a finals too! AxRyung Fighting!

TB and Genna: After seeing the kickass teamshirt that Ryung is sporting, I realize i have become an Axiom fan.
I am long tired of endless and pointless esports discussions, and I value any actual effort to create something a billion times higher. I wish you guys the best of luck!

Gotta say that Ax t-shirt Ryung is wearing right now in the Code S semis is one of the best looking progamer shirts at the moment. Lots of ugly ones going around.....other teams take note
