This is an amazing mix of technology that could help Starcraft Players improve their own game by watching others eye movements. I believe Day[9] would love to get this on some pros to use this to help analyze what they are thinking. Do you think this is a benefit to the community?

This is great, why hasn't anyone thought of this earlier? I want to see what this looks like with a top-tier player.

Needs more info. This looks like an awesome kit, but do you need special equipment? How reliable is it? Who made it and where does it come from? How much does it cost? is it free?

edit: "The S2 Eye Tracker costs $5,000 (academic discounts are offered.)" lol, no. Not free xD

Not quite. The eyetracker can be a really expensive piece of gear ($5000 from the makers of this particular eye tracker) but it does look like a webcam type device. You can imagine all the extra costs account for the hardware and software that go into tracking the really subtle eye movements to exact precision.

This would be really cool to see in tournaments when they cut to player FPS.

Holy $5000 dollars batman, but still really cool to see and could let spectators really get into the heads of the pros if ever used in tournies.

Cool beans, it'd be cool if some pros streamed using this. If this uses hardware/software that is readily available to people maybe it can be incorporated into sc2Gears.

This is amazing. Even if it was just a novelty, it would still be amazing to watch how really good players use this. Also, any genre of games would be interesting as well.

I've seen these used in cognitive psychology experiments to analyze how people look through an image, great idea to use them in video games to further our understanding of the pro's mind.

It's definitely more interesting than the heartbeat tracker, I'll give em' that.

Cool!!

Apart from the spectator value, it can probably be used for strategy as well. Like studying what makes people not look at minimap for a long time, to understand how to best distract from drops.

Fun to see how the mouse often clicks in the middle of the eye tracker. And how the eye tracker moves down to look on the wire frames during battles to check health. Red wire frame seems to be an eye magnet for example.

I think it would be extremely cool for play by plays, especially if you see an army get absolutely devestated you can see why and where the player was allocating his time, great for that MLG touch screen display (YOU MUST BE THIS TALL TO CAST! lololol)

i think people over-analyze starcraft. they keep logs, spend countless hours watching day9, pay for coaching, and now track eye movements. Don't get me wrong, theses things are extremely useful for some more than others, but I think if you just spend most of your time playing and having fun with the game while maybe doing some other little things like watching vods and streams a bit (day9, etc.) you will improve more quickly.

eyetrackers measure the movement on your fovea,(the back of your eye) with lasers. The data is transmitted to a computer that calculates the point of vision.

most vision labs use these to discover what objects people find salient (interesting) in images or videos

I guess most pros would be flicking back and forth between resources and minimap more than the main screen.

I know I barely look at whats happening on the screen and mostly look at resources and minimap, and kind of partially look at the screen while being focused on the minimap. Where as when I started I would only look at the main screen.

I could be wrong tho.
