If you have been hanging around Reddit lately, you've probably realized a brand new bar opened in Paris last week. I am proud to introduce you to MELTDOWN!
It's basically a permanent barcraft: 5 screens and a projector broadcasting constant sc2 streams and full coverage of major tournaments. Other games will also be featured on special occasions: Dota 2, LoL, D3...
Additional cool stuff :
There are 2 free-to-access computers, you can just come and play a game which will be restreamed in the rest of the bar
We also have showmatches, coaching, challenges, bets… the website will soon say it all.
From masters level on, you get a free drink if you come and play a custom game!
VIPs love our bar! Come and if you're lucky enough you'll share a drink with NesTea, aLive, Symbol, MMA, Reis, BiGs, MoMaN, AureS or Stephano
If you just feel like relaxing in a cool place, you can borrow a book from our sci-fi library and read it while sipping on a coffee
Oh, I almost forgot: our cocktails are AWESOME. The most famous one is certainly the Blue Flame Hellion, easily recognizable in the pictures. We also just created the Stephano Shot, his favorite.
UPDATE: free coaching now available every monday at Meltdown!
06/11: PROTOSS coaching with LDLC.Wolf 06/18: ZERG coaching with LDLC.MoMaN 06/25: TERRAN coaching with EC.SarenS
People will be randomly chosen from the crowd to participate in the sessions while the rest can watch and learn! At the end of each session, you'll also be able to challenge the pros to win free drinks!
Also, here is what will happen in the next weeks:
Outstanding decoration will take the place over (who said "life-size alien model"?)
Our webTV will show the matches played in the bar
VODs will be available (i.e. Stephano playing Terran against a player from the bar last night)
A webcam will show you the overheated atmosphere
Partnerships with high-class tournaments will be revealed (there might be some surprises for you during HSC V…)
The address is 32 rue Albert Thomas. We're open from 5PM to 2AM. Can't wait to see you!
Hi, I'm one of the owners of the bar. I'd be delighted to answer your question in PM or here if needed
As for the question : Can we play 2v2 on ladder with the 2 comp ? Yes it is totally possible but it won't be restreamed on the bar since the obs computer can't join ladder

rule i would come there evry single day if i lived near :D
I dunno where you live in Germany, but by train, Paris is at 3 hours from some big cities in the west (Aachen, Köln, Düsseldorft or Essen). It's not so far !
It's like the worst place in all paris for me. No direct bus, tram, metro or anything .
Just kidding that's awesome. FYI, Ashiara, one of the owner is the community manager of Millenium (though I have yet to see him do something on the website ><)
On May 10 2012 22:49 helvete wrote: Very nice, though it would be ten times as nice if it wasn't purely SC2. As it is I think it's confusing to call it a gamer bar.
Agreed. Need to add some DotA, SF4, etc etc etc but apartwise, excellent.
This looks great. Definitely warrants a visit to Paris. Feels that everyday gaming becomes more and more mainstream, hope we will see more bars like this open around the world (preferably somewhere close to home ).
For the love of all things good and sweet please spread this wonderful amazing stupendous idea! Think of the marketing, not only would you get gamers but casual people who liked to try new things, or hipsters. Either way good target audience across the world.
TLDR:
To any and all behind this bar, I love you. AFK finding money to go to France instead of S Korea later this year.
thank god im going on erasmus next year to Paris. Was planning to live in "arrondisements" 1 to 6 so I will be quite near! Im diamond need to practise hard to get to masters and have some free drinks!!

wow need to check this out when i'm in paris again. maybe i can add this bar to my very short list of places in paris where people actually speak/understand english.

Sc2 is our personal favorite and fits best the cyberpunk atmosphere we want to create, but we'll organize events around many other games
Awesome!
Now if only I spoke French.. To me one of the best things about going to other countries is to speak to the people who live there, and the horror stories I've heard about parisians (non-gamers ofc!) in that regard have given me the impression that that's not gonna happen. Am I wrong?

In general french people are really bad at foreign languages (lack of interest, etc). But it would be probably totally different in this kind of place.
For people asking about the 2v2, the player screens are doubled (one screen for the player, one in the direction of the bar), therefore you can see what the player is doing while sitting in your chair, but it won't be restreamed on other screens of the bar. For the restream feature you need either to stream directly from the computer on any streaming platform, or to accept the streaming computer of the bar as an obs.
For Otolia : "FYI, Ashiara, one of the owner is the community manager of Millenium (though I have yet to see him do something on the website ><)" : Ask me next time you come and I'll show you
Would be cool if you could, like, pull ps3 controllers from the ceiling and play Street Fighter on one of the tellies if an argument should break out :p
A little tip, make your Facebook page in English for the rest of us stupid people who can't speak your language. You might get more likes, views, whatever.

Young people are half decent (like from 20 to 30), but out of this range French are awful at English.
That is totally baller, I love it. Hope to see frequent posts/blogs from you guys with stories and photos! If I'm ever in Paris again, I will be there for sure.
I've been having this idea for almost 3 years but I was always to lazy/poor to do anything about it. Great that someone else had the guts to make it happen. Best of luck!
France redeems itself to me! I certainly hope this thing lasts long enough for me to someday afford a trip there! Blue Flame Hellion: best. drink name. ever.

Not that I don't respect the idea, but you're really overstretching with "Europe's first", considering there's been the Kyoto Lounge in Manchester UK for a while now, and I'm sure there are plenty of others across europe.
Dunno about Europe first since there is something similar just a lot less star craft it seems in Manchester Uk, yet asalways great to see things like this popping up!
looks incredible ^_^ I hope more places like this pop up. Would love to see one in London. Barcrafts are cool but watching tournaments isn't as sociable as just hanging out with your fellow nerds. I will defintiely go when I am next in Paris
This looks amazing! the bar looks very nice from the pictures shown and I love the idea! Hope it does great! It's amazing to see things like this take place! I'd be surprised if Blizzard or other companies dont give you guys free swag and what not! If I ever go to Paris I know where I'd be spending my evenings!
Wow, this is so impressive! I'm so glad this came together for you, and I really hope it stays successful. Great atmosphere, great setup and concepts, great drinks, and the VIPs to start the ball rolling.
ive been secretly dreaming about opening almost exactly one of these in gothenburg :p wonder if there is enough people to make it profitable? I truly hope so, I wish you guys all the luck in the world cause doing this is pure awsomeness!
Expect atleast one swede visiting sometime soon! (hopefully :p)
If Brazil had a decent public I would definately convince my mother to do something like that.. She has a good amount of savings and still don`t know what to do, besides me and my brother could help her out about all of these things and he has experience in the field (bar, gaming, etc.)
I see this sort of idea working quite well in Sao Paulo though.. Specially to popular games like League of Legends and Counter Strike
You`re applying such a simple concept, and yet very powerful. That was Steve Jobs philosophy for his products haha

This is really cool, but sadly all my IRL friends are "regular" people, I don't know any geeks or nerds I could go with. Maybe sometime I'll just drop by.
Just thought I would point out that although this is great it is not Europe's first gaming bar, we hold our Barcraft in Kyoto Lounge which is an awesome gaming bar in Manchester (England) http://kyotolounge.com/ good to see more springing up though will have to make a visit next time I am in France!
Wow so sick! I wish i lived in Paris haha. And YOUR games are featured on the big screen? sick, maybe a pro like stephano would recognize a good player on the screen and call them out. sick advancement in e-sports!
are you kidding me!!!!!!!!!!!!!! how awesome is that!!!!!!!!!!!!! so i walk in ther on a regular night and get to chill with alive, stephano, mma ))) seriously, this is the first time i'm pleeding for a big international chain, best of luck i will be checking that out this summer vive le france
Definitely goona be checking this out on my next (and first, and probably only in a long time) trip to Europe. By the way, some folks over here at Buenos Aires, Argentina did more or less the same thing, ut with a shorter budget. The place is called Geek Lounge and they're hosting a really big Starcraft 2 Tournament this Saturday. If you wanna hang around at the stream to help the growth or our community, please do!
i've actually been speaking to a friend about getting one of these up and running in nyc or maybe a bit north of the city. i wonder if we can use kickstarter for funds.
Paris is not far by train, I'm looking forward to visiting your bar this summer. If you could organize some Dota 2 stuff by then aswell, that would be even better. Or how about this: Just some hours ago Valve announced the next International (the 1.6 million $ tournament they already hosted last year). http://blog.dota2.com/ - If you guys would stream that tournament, I would be glad to watch the games in the bar. Now that would be pretty sweet.

We will definitely stream all the big MOBA events in addition to SC2 ones
Hmm, I'll visit you on my next trip to Paris... anytime soon !
Im suprised though to see this poping out in Paris instead of.. I dunno London, Stockholm or any German huge city.. anyway, great job. Hope this is going to work money wise!

You know what would be an awesome idea for you guys? Do a live stream of the people playing at the bar with shots of the bar itself and let us buy players drinks :D
Looks great. Could you set a live stream up for us living far from Paris to experience some of this awesomeness?
After the Iron Squid finals this goes to show that SC2 in France is doing quite good. I feel like the french sc2 community might be bigger than one may thing.
This is AWESOME. The future is here :D I think things like this will become a hell of a lot more available. Social gaming back in the day (Lans) are becoming a thing of the past, i can see these filling that gap cant wait to go see it
Teamliquid, thank you for spotlighting this bar. I've met the people managing it and i wish them the very best. Whenever i'll come back to Paris i'll make sure to spend a ton of cash at their place.
This is really cool! I don't live in Paris but if I happen to visit friends there, I'll sure try to convince them to at least have a drink. Great job setting everything up.

There is already a bar in Berlin. Called CK-99.. http://www.ck-99.com/ Btw. please fix the headline.
For what it's worth, we've had a few of these operating in Australia for the last few years and they're hugely successful. Love what you guys are doing, all the best!
There are "gamers bars" all over Europe for years, i think the headline is a good commercial but stupidly wrong We had a gamers bar here about 12-13 years ago, they unfortunately had to close some years later because of some issues. And yes i m old!
OMG!!... FIRST THORZAIN JOINS EG AND NOW THIS?!?! ...
This is just so awesome it's insane!!! I'm loving the path that e-sports evolution is going right now.. Wish i could see what 10 years into the future will be like in terms of its evolution o.O
This is definitely a priority place to visit next time i happen to be in paris!!.... EXCELLENT SHIT !!!

I am one of the owners. I've been wanting to open a cyberpunk bar for a long time, while I've been trying to organize Barcrafts with Ashiara for the past few months. We realized how much easier it would be to have our own place, and it was the push I needed to start my project. We raised the funds to do so about 2 months ago.
And for those of you who ask for a stream, it will be up and running very soon
I've been to the bar already the Iron Squid final night ^^ and it was awesome. It's a great bar, and the cocktails are quite good as far as I can tel (I tried the stimmpack one).
There was diffusion of a lot of different finals on a big screen, however it was funny cause I asked one of a customer here if she knew what was going on and she told me pointing at one of the Thorzain vs Naniwa match in TSL : "Of course ! This is world of warcraft !" (with a horrible french accent).
Man this idea is amazing, its basically fusing 2 of the greatest things, alcohol and gaming :D the bar itself looks really well designed and layed out...if i lived close i would be there every day :D
Hi there, so I've been reading all the 17 pages of comments and I have to say, as the co-owner of the bar (with Foxy), that your comments are really making our days Seriously you guys are awesome !
Spread the word, let the world know what's comming !
To all of you speaking about other venues across the world (Australia, Germany, UK) we would just like to point out that we are the first one aiming that much at eSports and the scene. We are directly in contact with a few progamers and we are hoping to create a bond between the bar and our future online platform which will feature a lot of cool stuff (TV, real time interactions with the bar, big community etc etc).

Fix the headline. It's not the first
The place in Berlin, and to a lesser extent the one in Manchester both seem like primarily gaming centers that also have a bar in the same building (Berlin) or serve drinks (Manchester). Neither seems like a place you'd go just for a drink without intending to play. Meltdown is much more like a bar with the option to play a bit if you feel like it.
Looks cool. But I think it would be better for your businessmodel to provide different games. That way you´ll build a broader base for when one of the games fades out and new ones come in. It also might help intermingling the different communities if you can go to a bar and watch some SC2 on one monitor and SF on another.
Also I think it could become a bit boring for (non diehard SC fan) visitors who might decide to visit less often as they would with more games available to watch.
Hello Golden Ghost, thank you for your ideas, but I would like to repeat that we are going to broadcast all sorts of games, even though the main theme is SF.
Its happened a bit but my vision is watching the major eSports events online and during intervals cutting to multiple barcrafts globally.
Yes, Its happened a bit, but too infrequently and having seen how it works in UK for other major events it really adds a sense of excitement and drama even 'specialness' to the occasion. I hope MLG, Dreamhack, GSL, MLG, and NASL are considering this as its one other tool to utilise time between games.
It would be great advertising for the events too so I think all barcaft organisers would help make it effective..maybe even have someone who is hooked up to a mic and chats to likes of Day9 etc.
On May 11 2012 19:46 Ashiara wrote: Hello Golden Ghost, thank you for your ideas, but I would like to repeat that we are going to broadcast all sorts of games, even though the main theme is SF.

Then put that in the OP!
In your first post you only mentioned "It's basically a permanent barcraft: 5 screens and a projector broadcasting constant sc2 streams and full coverage of major tournaments."
So that gave me the impression it would only be Starcraft.

gonna go there on hollydays ! going to take all the way from germany to france just to visite this awesome bar! This is a huuuge step forward for eSports
I moved to Paris recently, and now I have the incredible luck of living just a couple of blocks away from this place. And yes, its absolutely amazing =). The only minor downside is, like most bars in france, they dont have anything to eat... I know thats normal here but, oh, how I miss the sweet south american way of having tacos, chorillanas and a long etc. in the bars...
this is really intriguing from a business perspective.
the most important thing for bars is typically getting girls in them which in turn bring in the guys.
this has the thing that most dudes like 2nd to girls which is video games, and thanks to places like twitch.tv and the global nature of sc2, there is never a time when multiple streams aren't online.
this is a great idea, and i hope it works out well. best of luck!

I've been to the Kyoto lounge multiple times. Its a gaming bar. Thats its primary purpose. It is a bar, with gaming. There is nothing about it that speaks to some sort of dual purpose. The bar, and the gaming at said bar, are the reason the place exists.
Frankly speaking, I'd respect you and your marketing a lot more if you simply admitted the error. You said gaming bar, you said first, and you put the two together.
You were not the first. In fact, the one in Berlin is also not the first, if the previous poster is correct in stating it has been open 6 months. The Kyoto lounge opened two years ago. It is a bar, they serve drinks, host tournaments and host barcrafts, and they market to a gamer crowd, therefore they have games.
I have nothing against you or your establishment. I wish you every success, but frankly speaking, you're trying to redefine what the term "Gaming Bar" means, to suit your own purposes. Its a No True Scotsman argument and it is logically inconsistent. Just please, admit that you were not the first gaming bar in Europe. It will do you far more good to show what reasonable people you are, and concede that point, than it will to continue arguing with me and others, all of whom know of older and more established gaming bars than your own.
Is the Kyoto Lounge the first gaming bar in Europe? I don't know. I have absolutely no idea. But thats fine because they're not claiming to be. They may not even be the first gaming bar in the UK, although to my knowledge they are in fact the first gaming bar in Europe. I state ambiguity only because I can't be certain and don't want to make a false claim.
But what they most certainly ARE, is a gaming bar, and one with a longer history than yours.

I went to the Kyoto lounge, had a drink, with friends, and didn't play, this very afternoon. Even got some decent music recommendations from the barman. Its perfectly suitable for that. Please try and avoid claiming things of places you haven't been to.

they're obviously excited about this new bar, and we should be happy they are part of the TL community and are adding to the thread. do we really need to make an ordeal about who was the first at this point?
now, if you see huge billboards with "first gaming bar," etc next time you're in paris, i think it'll be a better argument at that point.
everyone seems to be pretty pumped about this, and there's no reason to try and **** on it as soon as possible.
edit: lol...just realized the title of the thread contains "first gaming bar," but i'm going to stand behind my statements regardless.
As a french master-racer coming back from the bar, i think it would be awesome to have a stream of the bar (games + bar) for all TLers during thursday to saturday. The world needs to know how good that bar is.
Quite nice to hear! Is there any way you can bring your laptop to play there? I don't have much hope, but I am still hoping for that, cause I am so much used to my laptop keyboard...

Anyway, can't wait to see you all in the bar !

So you realized you were wrong.. but you're standing behind it regardless? GuitarBizarre wasn't trying to **** on it at all as far as I can see. This is the meat of it: "I wish you every success, but frankly speaking, you're trying to redefine what the term "Gaming Bar" means, to suit your own purposes. Its a No True Scotsman argument and it is logically inconsistent.", and it's 100% correct. By your logic I could open up a gamer bar, claim it's the first one, and if someone linked this thread I'd just say "boohoo stop killing ESPORTS".
Regarding the fight about the use of the word "first", sorry if we offended anyone. We researched about similar bars before opening ours, and didn't find anything like it in Europe: a regular bar mainly dedicated to sc2. We had only found gaming centers or cybercafe-like places. I'm all willing to change the title if the community feels we're stealing someone.
On the bright side of things, the bar was fuller than ever yesterday, and we had a wonderful evening! Thanks guys, you're making eSports a better place, and that makes me HAPPY.
Very nice i hope it will have success but it is not the first Gaming Bar in Europe. I dont know all but CK-99 in Germany is already open for like a year or more now and organized events like Battle in Berlin. Anyways it will help eSport to grow.
Definitely not the first gamer bar, as i was sat in kyoto a year ago drinking beers while playing sc2 but looks fun so good luck. Just a shame so few women follow sc2 otherwise I'd be tempted to go to these places more often =)

The community shouldn't matter at all, it's just a case of bad information. Aiming at SC2 (not eSports) doesn't make your bar the first gaming bar in Europe,

I personally don't care but it's strange the thread name wasn't changed to "France's first gaming bar"
I just hope that this is making money in the long run as well, seems like its doing awesome right now. When people find out that this actually a stable business in the long term, these kind of bars will be opening up everywhere. Haven't heard of a bar for SC2 in my area, Toronto, not that i go out much to know anyways lol

Wow Nice! I didn't expect this to be possible... Thanks, hope to see you soon!
I came after work on Friday evening. At 7 pm is was already completely packed, pretty impressive. Sipping a beer while watching Polt streaming is pretty awesome, I will definitely come back there .
I was going to paris for a wedding, i saw this thread before so i decided to go there to check it out.
The owners seems very very nice. Beers 25cl 3€ 50cl 6€ at any time (i went there at 9pm where it's usually happy hours and pints for 3-4 € in others bars) but it's totally worth it for the atmosphere :D I didn't look for the other drinks since i always drink beers. Took two beers, offered one for my sister and one for my father too and i'm so glad i did it to show them some support.
I saw MoMaN, which was, as always, so nice and friendly ! I took a picture with him while he was talking with 3 girls : (i shamely forgot to put my teamliquid t-shirt)
Stephano was supposed to come later but i had to leave so i didn't see him :'( But maybe next time !
Only one thing is it's a bit small, there are like 8 tables for 4 people + some chairs at the bar and there are a lot of people there ! But you can always find a place and they're still at the beginning.
I guess this concept will fill the spot were arcades used to be. I don't know about the rest of Europe but I haven't found a single proper arcade in Sweden in years. I would love it if they expanded beyond Starcraft and MOBAs, because as far as I understand this is an esports bar, not a gamer bar. A combination between barcraft and arcade would be perfect. Still an awesome initiative and I seriously doubt you'll have trouble filling the place on tournament nights.

Do you mean an actual arcade with arcade machines? If so, Liseberg has a pretty big one. That's the only one I know of sadly.

As far as I concern, this is the first barcraft bar.
Really damn cool, would love to visit Paris with this being another great reason.
It says it closes at 2am, GSL starts at 5am EST here, could anyone tell me what time the GSL would start in France? because 2am still sounds a bit short of the GSL, only downside I can come up with, if true. :D
or am I mistaken completely? Do they stay open in the AM for tournaments/GSL?
On May 15 2012 05:34 Volcker wrote: Will this place be open early Saturday for the finals ?
The bar will open at 3PM on saturday, and will be showing a VOD of the GSL finals, and then live MLG until 2AM. A day by day program will be available soon!
Don't hesitate joining the channel Meltdown on Bnet to play games with people from the bar!
And if you have some music you want us to play in the bar, you can send an email to music@meltdown-paris.com or through Spotify! http://open.spotify.com/user/1130003960
First of all, if you're in Paris over the weekend, make sure to join us for the MLG Spring Championships Barcraft! Starting at 5PM every evening, we'll be warming up with the best VODs from the previous evening followed by the live coverage at 7PM!
Webcams and microphones have been installed in the bar to interact directly with official streams, and lots of prizes & drinks will be offered over the course of the weekend.
It will be a perfect occasion to taste our brand new cocktails!
And if you want to compare your drinking abilities, just order an army! Here is a ZvT:
And as SC2 is not only about watching and drinking, it's now time to play! For those of you who'd like to spend time with the pros and improve their gameplay, we are offering coaching every monday!
06/11: PROTOSS coaching with LDLC.Wolf 06/18: ZERG coaching with LDLC.MoMaN 06/25: TERRAN coaching with EC.SarenS
These pro players and more will then alternate every monday to offer you FREE coaching! People will be randomly chosen from the crowd to participate in the sessions while the rest can watch and learn! At the end of each session, you'll also be able to challenge the pros to win free drinks!
I hope you find these updates as exciting as we do, we're looking forward to welcoming you at Meltdown!
I am on a study abroad program in Nantes at the moment and was already planning on being in Paris this weekend (Great Timing), I may have to check this place out looks awesome!

Only downside is that we had to walk like 5km @ 2-3 am back to our hotel because we couldn't leave the bar until all public transportation got closed :D

Are there no cabs in France? O_O Just wondering
There is. Just no enough in Paris during rush hour. There is public transportation but it's somewhat tricky and only parisians know their way and it's not always practical.
Hi there, here is a fresh update: Stephano will be interviewed LIVE from the bar, tomorrow at 7PM CET. He will give us his opinons about HotS after testing it during MLG Anaheim!
I just wrote up an article on my website about the Gamer bar concept and Meltdown. My background is in retail development consulting and since I'm based in Seoul, I think there's a lot of potential for the future of the gamer bar (if not more evolved versions that mix LAN center + Sports bar with console gaming/comfortable seating/etc.
If you guys have time, feel free to check it out and fill out the survey! Thanks!

I live in Paris. I was talking about public transportation during the night which is rather difficult to understand if you are not used to it.
Surprised that nobody's mentioned WZZRD in this thread. It's been open much longer than Kyoto Lounge and CK-99! there were ESWC qualifiers held there as well (2008 I think). They're in Enschede, NL and you should definitely check them out! www.facebook.com/WZZRDgamecafe
