On August 12-13, eight of North America’s top StarCraft II players will gather to compete against one another. They’ll be battling not only for their share of a $20,000+ prize pool, but also for an invitation to represent their region in the 2011 StarCraft II Global Battle.net Invitational held at BlizzCon.
The action will be brought to you by Sean “Day[9]” Plott and JP “itmeJP” McDaniel across a two day bloodbath broadcasted live and free of charge. This event will follow the Latin American Battle.net Invitational being held on August 10-11.
Without any further ado, here are the competitors for the 2011 StarCraft II North American Battle.net Invitational:
Jonathan “KiWiKaKi” Garneau (protoss)
KyeongHyun “SeleCT” Ryoo (terran)
Greg “IdrA” Fields (zerg)
Dongyeon “DDE” Lee (terran)
Chris “HuK” Loranger (protoss)
Shawn “Sheth” Simon (zerg)
Payam “TT1” Alasvandi-Toghyan (protoss)
Chris “ostojiy” Ostojic (zerg)
Stay tuned for more information about the broadcast schedule and how you can watch.

Haven't seen a thread made about this yet, forgive me if there is. But a very interesting list of players including some big names: Kiwikaki, Select, Idra, Huk, Sheth, TT1, up and comer in DDE and a darkhorse on ostojiy.
|
Sweet! Can't wait to see IdrA huk some people up
|

|
cool, i wonder what the format will be
not that many players, so i want more games :p, i kinda hope its bo5 quarters, bo5 semis, bo7 finals but im sure that wont be it

Ostojiy is really good despite being unknown though.
Still put IdrA or Huk as the favourites though
|
Sweet finally a EZ win for Idra
|
who is ostojiy?
EDIT: idras probably gonna win if kiwikaki gets knocked out in the first round or someshit
|
I'm surprised that Huk was invited since I assumed that he doesn't ladder on NA. But such a great lineup!

I think Idra has to be considered the favourite, regardless of whether you think HuK or Idra is better, most simply because this will be played on NA server and I presume HuK may have a bit of lag.
HuK would be my second pick... I would be surprised if anyone else won.

Grats to Ostojiy on getting picked. Now we just need to see NamhciR get some <3.
I'm getting so tired of seeing people get opportunities for their ability to self promote their name, rather than actually winning stuff.
EDIT: That obviously doesn't apply to the other 7 players picked, but in a lot of other invitationals/tournaments it does.

Oh wow! We were all waiting on this kind of a tournament, and I'm glad it's all pro players, and not some ladder grinders (unless they just happened to be the top 8... but the point still stands).
|
Big time congrats to DDE and Ostojiy, looks like Blizzard made some excellent picks for this invitational!
|
DDE and Ostojic are odd choices. Otherwise let's see how it goes.

DDE often times plays much better than Select

Odd as in I haven't seen them around the big tournament podiums that much, as opposed to the others. Still think they have to be great players to reach this far.
|
Funny how its 5 Canadians, 2 Americans and 1 Korean. USA seriously lacks good players for their population size.

What? DDE has been tearing it up for some time now in the big online tournaments. (shoutcraft invitational and tactic 3d pro-am).

dde a odd choice? dde is a absolute beast, and could be win this tournament if he is playing his best.
|
really wish they had a qualifying system rather then invites but good invites non the less of course, They did a good job picking the best NA's anyway imo.
|
|
|
Gogogo huk!
Who is ostojic? never heard of him before this..were the invites based off ladder performance?
|
Why did they pick ostojoy over some of the other people who were higher on ladder (as far as I'm aware, ostojoy is usually high up on ladder but I never hear any tourny results).
And as much as people may not like Major, how could he not get an invite?

Wow that's pretty exciting, all except the lack of Americans invited. Can't wait to watch.

That's probably just about the strongest NA lineup you can get. Should be a good tournament.

Don't Mexicans play on NA? With Mexico being in North America and all.

Dde has had some incredible performances lately so he is a dark horse

hmm me as an european, i know dde very well. He was playing incredible good in the last time. Don´t know why somebody does say that he is an "easy win" or something like this.

They are both names that you see in the top 3 spots on ladder consistently, and these invites are supposed to be at least somewhat based on ladder right?

HuK should take this, if we judge conservatively, but you never know (and depends on motivation).
|
are you serious about tyler? I love the guy but TT1 has had better results and Tyler is not a force he was in sc1 thus far. hopefully that changes, but you cant invite him because you " like " him better.
|
I don't know how to feel about TT1. I've seen him do amazingly, and I've seen him just crumple and play like a gold leaguer without hands. Hope he can make a good showing and prove he was picked for a reason!
|
this is going to be an interesting watch for sure. I would find it very very Ironic if they have connection issues. Also Idra/Sheth don't let me down :D:D:D:D:D <3
|
I think this will be interesting, my thoughts would be a HuK win, since IdrA usually struggles with zvp more than his zvz or zvt, but IdrA said that he had really been practicing for Anaheim, I want IdrA to win but I'll have to see. Either way IdrA and HuK FIGHTING!!

Probably because in both nations competitive gaming is prized or viewed as a more viable outlet for a career then the U.S. If you are talented intellectually in the U.S. it's almost for sure you will become a doctor/lawyer/scientist with how many decent universities are around brain draining all the talent.

I think for a lot of people, eSports aren't really a sustainable occupation. Other than being in eSports, or even gaming, for your entire life (which itself isn't much of a plan), there aren't really professions that you can parlay gaming skill into. Think about all of the gamers who forgo university for gaming, in the US, there isn't really enough money in the game, and now that the koreans take it all, most people really can't live off of what they make playing. Then when they finally retire, or quit, they're 26-28 with no college degree, and in America that means McDonalds.
