Today I visited the Ontario Convention Center to observe the NASL crew set up for NASL Grand Finals. The venue is HUGE. This time, NASL spared no expenses and had spent weeks preparing the production for the finals. As I am typing, the sound engineer is blasting the surround sound with rock music for one last quality check. This experience is nothing like what I had expected...
Hundreds of CHAIRS lined the center of Exhibit Hall B, with the stage front and center. Hanging above the stage are three giant projection screens, dozens of spot-lights, and a ton in speakers swinging precariously midair. Even now the stage is incomplete, the crew has been awfully mysterious about what's left to fill the stage.
A panoramic from the press box (Yes, there's a press box!)

To the left, behind black curtains, is the production area. NASL essentially moved their whole studio to the venue from Rancho Cucamonga. That's scores of monitors, computer, cameras, and god-knows-what stacking all over this modest space. By the time I arrived, the crew is already busy testing out various highlights and player intros for the finals (and yes, the production has improved) and stress testing the venue ISP.

Player lounge sits to the right of the stage, apparently catering will be available. Player will warm up in an area visible to the audience, with plenty of room around to crowd over and to beg for autographs. Apparently, all the gaming pcs are courtesy of NASL's newest sponsor, IBUYPOWER Gaming PC.
Behind the audience located an elevated soundstage, and in its center an monstrous soundboard. There are so many buttons and levers on the giant board that my eyes crossed trying to figure it out. Adjacent to it will locate the merchandise and sponsor booths.

Yes, there's a press box/VIP lounge! Here, members of the "press" get to rid themselves of the unwash masses and rest in leather sofa to enjoy an elevated view of the whole show. I wonder if there'll be catering also?

The NASL Grand Final venue is shaping up beautifully and I have no doubt that it'll be a tremendous success this weekend. Tune in online at www.nasl.tv Friday to Sunday July 8-10, starting 11am Pacific Time (2pm Eastern, 1900 London, 2000 Central Europe, 26:00 Taiwan, 3:00 Korea) and 12pm (3pm Eastern, 2000 London, 2100 Central Europe, 3:00 Taiwan, 4:00 Korea) Sunday. Or visit the finals in person at the Ontario Convention Center, California, exit South off the I-10 on Vineyard, left on Holt Blvd.
Because I been PMed about this several times: Entry tickets are available at door or online, $25 for the whole weekend. NASL will have free LQ stream as always at www.NASL.tv and available in high definition for season 1 HD pass holders. On-site parking is $9/day, but ask the nice parking lady for a weekend pass!
How in the hell can they afford all of this? Is this serious just coming out of someones pocket? I don't see how they could be making money off of this...

Either way, keep it up.
Well, isn't NASL run by a man named "Russ"? I recall iNcontroL stating that he is also the man who created GosuCoaching. I think his "real job" is the backbone to NASL's finances.
If I remember correctly, once upon a time, Incontrol mentioned Daniel Negraneu(poker guy) being involved with this. But, I haven't followed NASL closely and I'm not sure how much a role he would take, but he certainly has the $ to invest if he chose to do so.

Sometimes, my friend, you have to spend money to make money. Taking big hits like this are obviously not good for the pocketbook initially but I think NASL will continue to grow if they can organize events like this. If we know further in advance for season two's grand finals, I would love to request time off work to go down south and check it out.
This to me is just further proof that you guys have what it takes to make NASL the greatest league out there; just keep listening to the community and learn from your mistakes and I don't think there's much that will hold you back.
While I got a bit bored of the regular NASL season, I always expected the finals to be an epic event and from the looks of it, it's sure to impress. Can't wait.
It could be casted from within the smallest room in the world. I would not mind. All I want is to see an amazing event featuring multiple of the best players in the world!!!
I'm guessing the booths are going to be brought in at a later time and set onto the stage. It's not like every booth is going to constructed into the stage; gotta be able to put it in the back of a truck for future use.
Look very clean and professional and the seats look comfy, but overall it seems very bland in a wash of gray. Hopefully some color can be brought to the area. Best wishes to the tournament.
When I see "walk" and "NASL" in a title I worry someone has pulled out. But instead it was how awesome the end of this epic leagues first season will be. GL HF, I will be cheering
Wait, are you fucking kidding me!?!? That looks amazing! Makes me even more psyched that we will be having the crowd participation for the finals! Great foresight by the NASL team, I can't wait..
Sorry if this is at stuipid question, but is NASL charging an entry fee (im assuming they would lol, but trying to find out if they actually do). if they do, does anyone know what the cost is?
To be honest, I didn't have any great expectations for NASL, but after seeing this, my expectations proved to be very false. Amazing setup guys, can't wait to see how it will finally look like this weekend.

Thank you for rewarding the subscribers who have been defending the NASL from all the haters this season with what seems to be ... competence! There's are even signs of potential excellence!
Seriously though, good luck and god speed, looking forward to watching the stream this weekend. Been waiting three months for it!
wow this looks incredible. NASL season 1 is going to end on a huge note and I'm very excited about that. To the people questioning how anyone can afford stuff like that....um..the same way GSL and MLG do? It's called getting sponsorships and getting investments from rich people in the hopes of earning a profit. Business 101.
Why the crap do I have to live so far away! I would SOOO go to this. Look how freakin epic this looks guys! Support esports, GO there if you can, buy an HD pass if you can't
Thanks to all the hard workers at NASL for pushing NA esports farther and farther ahead!
Wooo cool! I'm going to be showing up tomorrow evening at the doubletree hotel a few hundred feet from the convention center, and I'm bringing Settlers of Catan. If any nerds wanna nerd it up tomorrow night, send PM. Thanks for the venue preview ^_^
Wow, the production value going into this is very impressive. I really hope everything runs as smoothly as possible so that we can have so many more of these events.
THERE ARE ACTUALLY CHAIRS!!! Take that MLG, haha. I really wish I could go to this, and i envy all those who will attend. Looks great, and I hope it is a sweet success.
looks so awesome, so proud of NASL for turning around a season that was going to be a huge failure, and making it one of the best sc2 tournaments out there! Is incontrol going to cast the finals, or is he done with that even?
holy cow batman! the venue looks absolutely fantastic! I didnt expect the NASl finals to be this grand. This is definitely going up on my must-watch list.
OMG, this is going to be amazing, i wish i could be there. SO EXCITED, CANT WAIT. OMG this is so awesome, like MLG but dedicated to just SC2, this event will blow your mind
Wow, I have to admit, I had no idea this tournament was going to be on such a large scale. (This isn't meant to be a snub towards the NASL or anything, but this looks HUGE). I'm getting really pumped to watch this.
I'm gonna edit so I don't double post, but I was just looking at the bracket and there's some sick matchups. I'm gonna make a quick list of some awesome matchups I base purely on my own opinion
MC vs. Boxer (http://nasl.tv/Match/Details/mc-vs-boxer-season-1-finals-match-8)
You don't have to follow e-sports that closely to know that this matchup is going to be huge. We have one of the founders of standard SC:BW gameplay, Boxer, against one of the best protoss players in the world, MC. This is a game where a seasoned BW veteran faces a player who has recently emerged as an amazing SC2 player. I'm really excited for this one.
SelecT vs. White-Ra (http://nasl.tv/Match/Details/select-vs-whitera-season-1-finals-match-7)
Here we have another case of old school vs. new school with the relatively new player SelecT against another BW seasoned veteran, the one and only White-Ra. SelecT is a very solid Terran player, and White-Ra, famous for his "special tactics" is going to be sure to give us some good matches.
MorroW vs. July (http://nasl.tv/Match/Details/morrow-vs-july-season-1-finals-match-3)
While the past two matches have been PvT, this match is a ZvZ that I'm sure is going to deliver some good matches (ZvZ!? you must be crazy!). I know ZvZ isn't the most popular matchup in SC2, but in this game we have a case of East vs West. An excellent Western, "foreigner" player is going up against and excellent Korean player. I predict these games will be fast, brutal, and completely awesome.
All the match-up looks pretty tight, but these are the three I'm looking most forward to. I think it's real possible we'll see an MC vs. July final which would be the icing on the cake for me.
Did not follow the qualifiers and group stages because of the stupid and waaaaaay to long format to make it in these playoffs but this going to be great. Looks very professional!!
MorroW vs. July (http://nasl.tv/Match/Details/morrow-vs-july-season-1-finals-match-3)

IIRC MorroW prefers to play Terran against Zerg, though i'm not sure if the NASL rules allow it. Would be nice since TvZ is a lot more fun to watch than ZvZ, though July might not be as prepared against Terran if he doesn't know about it.
This is going to be great! Does anyone know if there will be other attractions to see like booths/raffles/promotional demos/etc. to pass time if there is downtime?

GSL is the only big tournament you can't race pick in. In fact, most tournaments have rules in place to handle the situation of race picker vs race picker even though they are super rare in SC2. It was more common among foreign Brood War players.
Guys relax, read the article. He said there was still setup to go for the stage, and that the team was being very tight lipped about it. Its more than likely some sort of special both or sound proofing.

Despite all the hate, I thought NASL season one was amazing and a great $20 investment. 15k viewers everyday and some amazing games. I wish I could attend this event!
Ok guys I have a question, I haven't really followed NASL. So white-ra vs Select on friday will determine who will play on grand finals venue? Sorry for the ignorant question. Thanks
It will be a tragedy if that place is only half full. All the gear in the world cant replace the atmosphere of a huge crowd roaring, and the the amount of work put into this deserves that atmosphere
So sexy, I really like the little nook for players to warm up and talk to fans. I feel like most will opt to warm up in the back for serious warmup. Omg if i could stand that close to boxer while he was playing ^~^
Venue looks nice all though I would be so shocked if the event was actually any good... .(judging by the previous NASL casts) I cant see any player booths, so is everyone gonna be just sitting on a desk and playin infron of everyone? ah well.....i hope they have a good show
Looks like a pretty sweet venue! Seriously though, I read the entire thread and didn't see any response to the numerous questions about booths. Please for the love of God tell me there's booths. MLG got beaten over the head with it until they finally got their act together at Columbus (which was awesome btw). If NASL doesn't have booths, or at least some significant source of sound proofing, that could absolutely derail the positive momentum they've built up this season and I would hate to see that.
Holy Crap! I had no idea they had that kind of money to put into the NASL Grand finals. I knew they had some serious $$ for the winner, but that type of set up cost some serious $$ that's probably upwards of 40-50K right there.
Wow, this thing is *huuuugeeee* (gretorp voice). Wish they could invite Temp0 to perform "When I'm Grandmaster" in such venue with the audience singing along "we all say:..." etc; would be so epiccc.
Nice, pray to the starcraft gods there are no serverlag :D
Other than that, tickets being at 25$ is kinda harsh imo especially if you've already paid for the season like I did. But aslong as I get to watch it over the internets I don't mind that much.

Yeah, I didn't think that they could afford such an astounding venue like they're building. I'm really looking forward to tomorrows matches.
Looks awesome. I have a quick question though. I will be away on business for the weekend, so I most likely will not be watching it all. VODs are only available to those with season passes, correct?
We need to get as many people watching this event as we can. This is season 1 and i hope it doesn't end there. (i know there is more on the way but im talking more in terms of investment)
If this is the beginning, where will it be a year from now.... 3 years. I'm getting all wiggly.
I wish I could be there to watch, someone buy me a plain ticket :D Either way I'm so pumped for the online stream, I'm actually having some people at my place to watch all night long!

Event looks amazing I was stunned when I saw the first picture with the glass hallway, it's beautiful :O Showing my friends, get them all excited and watching ^_^. Hope it's gonna be a very successful event we can all enjoy <3
Hopefully this event can make up for a not so inspiring season.
And hopefully THEY DONT LET GRETORP ANYWHERE NEAR A MICROPHONE!
Give Geoff a reasonable other half or even let him go solo and the commentary will be great. I dont want to watch this thing without sound like ive had to for so many season-games.
There has been so many good standin commentarys, hopefully we get to have two good casters for the next season, and these finals!

I wish I would have stayed in CA for one more business day and flew home on sunday. Was in SD... just had to get outa there but i was all prepped with my Zerg shirt for support of Sheth / July / Sen! (And MorroW if he defeats July and goes on to continue playing zerg)
I pray that enough people show up so that NASL can solidify itself as one of the top western SC leagues. Thanks to the gentlemen that made that possible, good luck to you and GG.

When I left today, Darkforce is testing the warmup stations. iNcontroL watched on with dreamy eyes while Anna practices on stage. And I think Xeris suffered a panic attack and disappeared (probably not).
NASL has just dragged on for way too long. I was excited in the beginning but after weeks and weeks of games it's like lol who cares anymore. And there are so many different NASL tournaments like the open tournament, the qualifiers, the GF, the regular season, and playoffs. Who can keep track of all these games and results?

While that is a valid point why does it matter now? A person who didn't watch 1 single nasl game can just consider this as an isolated 16 man weekend tourney with top players if they want. Having no prior knowledge of the nasl won't detract from the viewing experience of the finals.

This is totally an important point to make.
NASL main season is regular content for the hardcore fans
NASL finals is a flagship broadcast that stands out on the calendar just like a Dreamhack or MLG weekend

I completely agree. Its sad that we can never have a regular live event like GSL though stupid United States and its stupid Manifest Destiny. NASL, IPL, and MLG will never have the feel of a GSL cause its not live .
It's amazing how much work and equipment goes into these events and I think a lot of people forget that. Would love to see more previews and event set ups like this in the future I wish I could be there but good luck and have fun to all who are attending/running/participating.
I would like to see a backdrop for the player interview area. I'm thinking of the ones that are normally used at major press conferences for sports or at red carpet events in Hollywood. It could include the NASL logo and all associated sponsors.
Hoping for some epic games , prize money is so sick , that i think quality and preparation for players wont be disappointing . And of course Tastosis + Day9 casting, omg, i gonna enjoy this so much !
That looks absolutely sick! I almost wish more of the tournament was live, like this. I'm sure it's quite pricey to put on such a production, but the quality of the NASL so far has been, well, underwhelming. These finals, however, are shaping up to look GREAT. Amazing casters, and a set up like this? Incredible. I have high hopes for the next season, as well!

After the first day is over sleep until the next starts, after that sleep until Collingwood plays Sunday afternoon.
God this weekend is going to be sick Beer, Starcraft, Football overload. Think a sicky might be required for Monday.

Lol. They should put July on a chair and then build the booth around him
Yeah where are the soundproof booths? The last thing I would want to see is a poor live observer experience.
Also. I'm sure NASL will get flamed for beginning the matches at 11am pst/2pm est on Friday. I'm guessing they really don't care about attendance or views. What really sucks is VODs won't be free for finals. If they do decide to charge people at the door to attend the finals live, they may as well charge people for VODs.
Is there any kind of schedule for the whole weekend? I only found that friday matches start from 11 AM PST, can't find anything for other days. I need to plan my weekend so I don't miss anything

horrible production quality at the finals right now. none of the inhouse projectors are setup right they're blurry and oversized. so far it would have been better to stay home

I'm confused why they would even buy a soundboard that size. Do they really have that many channels?
Let's see:
--casters' mikes --ingame sound --a couple of ambient/audience mikes --sound from prerecorded intro/outro videos, overlays, etc. --a couple of mikes from interviewers/translators, the MC, etc. --a commercial feed
They don't use that many channels to record the New York Philharmonic...

Yeah, after watching today's cast... I think chAse_ made a valid point.
It's a shame they didn't hire someone that actually knew how to use that sound equipment, really felt like some random guy was reading the manual all night trying to figure out what buttons did what.

Sometimes, or even usually, it's not so much a single comment that people get banned for. They really do look at the history of a poster and can keep track and make notes about them I believe. Once they feel some action is desired you can only put that on a single post even though it could span multiple posts.
Looking it up in the automatic ban list is always a nice way of finding out the exact reasons. And there's also another thread where people can discuss bans and ask questions like these. Many times the responses of the mods are elaborate enough to provide a fitting picture surrounding any external reasons.
I'm merely pointing this out since that post has been quoted multiple times throughout this thread, not only can that cause some derail but at some point you'd rather not see it again.
I'm aware your post has an actual point and merely uses it as an anecdote, so I don't mean the explanation of the above in a derogatory manner. I really enjoy reading the ban list so I thought I would "share" since many times you see people are curious why bans occur.
Edit: misspelt Quote so the tags didn't work properly

Nice equipment, seems like you guys really know what you are doing!!! I bet you can produce some awesome sound off that thing!
