Agreed! This is a terrible portrayal of girl gamers/fans.
And I really dislike the comments like "gotta love girl gamers".
This is degrading, no matter who is doing the signing.

Hahaha. Really, she wanted to get the autographs, who named you morals officer of the girl gamers? You seem like you would want to come out as a equal rights & shit dude but you only come out as an oppressor, defining what is right or wrong for a person to do.
Stop thinking in terms of PC, it's in most cases a loss of freedom and wrong.

If she really wanted the autographs, she would have gotten them on something that she could keep.
I don't want to start any type of argument. As a woman, I am offended by the picture and all the posts that follow, except for the posts that point out how ridiculous it is.
Obviously, since majority of you are male, most will disagree with me and I would lose any argument I try to make. I'm just saying, as a girl gamer, I don't want all girl gamers to be portrayed as sex symbols.

You wouldnt have to worry about that if there werent so many complete idiots in the community.

Honestly what you should worry about is not her, its that either people are stupid enough to think that just because 1 person behaves a certain way (which, btw, seems like a completely acceptable way to behave to me but I understand if its not something you are interested in), everyone willl... Or you might be wrong and this wont do much of anything for "girl gamers", in either direction.

...

Obviously, no one forced this woman to do this. She can and will do whatever she wants and I'm sure it was fun for her. More power to her. Hell, I'm jealous she even met Huk. I'm just more saddened by the posts that followed. Thought this was a more respectful community.
I've learned that this isn't an issue that can be discussed on TL. Too many opposing forces, but there are people here that agree with me.

To end, I just want quote a PM I received yesterday.
The sad thing is, the fact that you're not able to say anything in defense of women's rights without being subject to criticism and ridicule exemplifies the fact that this community is so patriarchal. I was actually genuinely saddened to see that picture because it would be awesome for sex equality to be promoted in Starcraft as it is a developing sport and reaches a lot of people - male and female alike. A lot of people don't seem to recognise how significant and disappointing that incident actually is.

That's quite the backtrack. Glad to see you agree that it doesn't matter. Unfortunately you followed it up with a complete contradiction.

If you read what I've said, you would see that I was mostly upset with the posts that followed. I said numerous times that I didn't care about what she did.

You wanna post your tits on reddit, you might get called a fat ugly whore.
That's why I've never posted my tits on reddit.

No need to discuss the fact, its intuitive.
[/QUOTE]

first, in that picture she is fully dressed and there was no implication either guy actually touched her body. if she was blowing these guys in the bathroom obviously no one would be coming to her defense. personally im not interested in her aspect of this situation at all, its the guys on tl i find sad.

second i couldent care less about whose talking shit on reddit and wont make any attempt to stop the shit talk on reddit because i know its way past impossible. people go to reddit to see outrageous stuff and laugh, some people go there specifically to talk shit and nothing else. however this was reposted on tl and the insults im talking about were posted on tl.

third if ONLY girls were calling that chick a whore i probably wouldent even care but from the way posts were worded, its from people attracted to women (prob guys) who have standards probably too high to be realistic (remember this is an INTERNET GAMING FORUM) who also think that other guys want to laugh at this girl being called a fat whore.

girls have been using their looks for attention since the human race existed. yeah she did that for attention but religion in the world will cease to exist before women stop trying to get attention for their looks.

theres bound to be plenty of attractive guys who read tl and can get hot girls, regardless it doesnt justify talking shit.

It's not a big deal and it's nice to see players having fun.

What sucks is that when girls do stuff like this it creates a stigma -- it's hard enough being a girl in the SC2 community. I don't want people to think I'm there for the attention. Then again I'm not gonna ask anyone to sign my chest. BM on the girls part, imo.

But also shame on all of you for making such crazy lewd comments. Let's be adults, eh? This is StarCraft II not a Harley bar.

If you want to promote sex equality in Starcraft, you encourage female gamers to go out and compete at high levels. Most fans and watchers aren't anywhere near pro level anyways, so judging the actions of one girl at a massive gaming event is pretty hypocritical, if you aren't going to look at all the stuff male fans are doing, too. (Trust me, it gets pretty wierd)

Here's the thing about this. I gave Stephis a hard time yesterday for acting like a victim a fight she started, but I don't really think she's wrong about whether this is good for esports.

In my earlier post I also said that I do believe this is a sign that esports is growing, as there exist women who think that being good at starcraft is worthy of their admiration, putting aside how this woman decided to express that. This is cool, because many of us male gamers (and I'm sure female gamers as well) have experienced disdain from "mainstream" women, more than from men, for spending so much time and energy on games.

However, just because this is a sign that esports is growing does not mean that it is going to make it grow more. You say we should encourage female gamers to play and compete, and I agree. The sort of reactions that can be seen in this thread, such as insulting the appearance of the woman picture (whether or not the judgment is reasonable) or the desire expressed for her to perform additional services for the players, will make many women feel uncomfortable. Even worse is that these voices do not seem to be a minority.

TL;DR: Women won't want to play starcraft if the community is seen as being full of sex-crazy adolescents who will ask them for "pix" and make lewd comments. If we want women to play starcraft someone needs to shut these people the hell up.

To preface, I am female too.

It's not offensive to me that she got her boobs signed and posted the picture. Whatever.

It IS offensive the number of comments saying she's fat, ugly, a whore, etc. WTF? In my opinion she looks pretty normal sized, but even if she were fat that's no excuse. When you see a person (male or female) on the street who isn't very attractive, do you shout about that to their face? I bet not, it's just plain rude and mean. It's equally unacceptable here.

Posting an opinion (anonymously) on the internet about somebody you don't and will never know has utterly nothing in common with "shouting about it to their face". Either you made a sincere mistake or you are a bonafide troll. Your argument and conclusion that it's unacceptable is contingent upon your false analogy to "shouting in someone's face". You're right - that wouldn't be acceptable. However, it isn't at all the same as posting an online opinion.

No, it's not exactly the same as shouting on the street. People are a lot ruder on the internet, so I'm sure insults received online are generally taken with more grains of salt than insults received from a stranger on the street. But that doesn't make it right. It's still mean and rude. I'm not trolling, just stating my opinion.

Not really surprising when most people followed BW were hardcore fans. SC2 is more casual friendly so of course we have a lot more new people here. New generation so to speak (not really a new generation).
If you check the BW section, it has a lot less these kinda idiotic posts. It has few of them but less.

It's easy to tell which posters are teens and which are older. As for the teenage responses, well, they are not surprising. Combine that with anonymity and really, people are gonna act with their impulses.

When older, more respectable men see an attractive female wear cleavage-baring outfits, they have long perfected the method of quickly flashing their eyes away. They "looked", but they know to keep it discreet(which is cool with the ladies, they know full well you looked - they caught your eyes flick direction - but you didn't make it obvious). There is no way to do that, on the Internet, other than change the topic entirely.

Respect and pro-gaming. As with anything, respect is earned, and in this case, earned through simply being a winner, earning sponsorship, and once again, WINNING. You don't earn respect by repeatedly losing tourneys.

So steph, you said you want this differentiation between men and women gamers to stop, and just all of us being regarded one and the same. You also said "Put yourself in a woman's shoes" You understand what I'm getting at? We can't ask for either side to give special treatment to the other. We're not trying to be cold blooded.

You're right. Her version is rude. Your version is rude and cowardly... much better. How does hiding behind a veil of anonymity make it any more acceptable?

Some girl got her boobs signed and posted a picture. Whether she's drop-dead gorgeous or ugly as heck has absolutely nothing to do with the story so it's kind of sad that the community focuses on that. Harping on it (in either direction) only serves to push women further away from the community.

My last girlfriend was somewhat of a gamer and she pretty much quit her game-of-choice's community because of immature comments about her weight/looks and people always hitting on her (and she didn't even post a picture!). Comments like those only serve to batter the girl's ego and make the commenter look pathetic. No one wins.
