With the growing popularity of StarCraft 2 and e-sports in general, we at the StarCrack Podcast were inspired to feature some of the most recongnizable women who participate in the community, work at the live events, and cover esports.
In this episode we speak with 4 interesting female members of the SC2 community (Anna Prosser, Leah Jackson, Briar Bates and Kelly Milkies). These girls all have a few traits in common, they're all gorgeous, passionate about StarCraft and are deeply embedded in the fabric of esports. In fact, I (Monarch) was a bit nervous speaking with all of them. These are the girls that have been, and will continue to be ambassadors for StarCraft 2 which is something I'm sure everyone can agree this community needs.
Anna "Uncontrollable" Prosser is best known in the StarCraft community as girlfriend of Geoff "iNcontroL" Robinson. She is the current Miss Oregon USA and will be participating in the Miss USA pageant later this yeah in Las Vegas. She’s been involved with e-sports through interactions with MLG and team EG and is now working with Kingston to bring us more content this year at MLG. + Show Spoiler +
Leah Jackson is a writer for G4tv.com and is heavily entrenched in StarCraft 2 coverage for the channel and the site. She will be attending MLG Dallas this weekend and has had major efforts to get SC2 more notice at G4. As StarCraft 2 continues to grow, Leah will have a substantial hand in web print coverage along with live video production. + Show Spoiler +
Briar Bates is the sister of Bryce “Machine” Bates of Team Evil Geniuses and girlfriend of StarCraft Broodwar legend G5. She has attended numerous StarCraft events in the past to support her brother and is playing a major supportive role in helping G5 return to professional gaming.
Kelly Milkies is best known as the controversial SC2 caster last season on GOMtv. She made a huge splash in the community when she began casting along side Nick “Tasteless” Plott and Dan “Artosis” Stemkoski. She has taken all the criticism and praise in stride and is continuing to improve her casting and communication skills. She is one of the nicest people you could ever meet and after some of the interesting revelations that we “uncover” in the lightning round, I can’t imagine anyone not being a Kelly Milkies fan. + Show Spoiler +
Don't miss the cameo appearances from G5 and mOOnGLaDe.
Most of the interviews are very light hearted however we do touch on some serious topics as can be heard in the interview with Kelly including the death threats she received along with the mutilated pictures of her that were emailed to GOMtv. Each interview features our signature lightning round of questions which answer some of the questions that are on everyone's mind. (OP - edited)
We hope you enjoy this and are already planning a "Girls of StarCraft 2, 2"

Machine's sister is dating G5! Is that not the cutest thing?

If you are going to do another podcast like that one, other female members of SC community off the top of my head are : Elaine_Sun (GLHF [she really knows her sc2 shit] and ofc Seltzer (Torches GF and great interviewer), ofc Tyler's wife (Wifetoss fighitng!) and I guess Grubby's wife Cassandra.
Awesome podcast btw, will listen to all of it when I catch the time!

Can't the SC2 community be interested in female gamers without having to know what underwear they're in? :/ I felt really uncomfortable reading that line.
Not to mention: it invited 5 cavemen to post about how these women look, which I think is way out of place in a topic about their involvement with ESPORTS. These sorts of comments are embarrassing for gamers because they substantiate the stereotype that we're all socially unaware sex-starved morons (as does marketing this podcast to us as if we were).
This is a cool project that can stand on the merits of these women; it shouldn't need sex appeal.
JWD, I completely agree and have edited my OP.

Day9's not bad looking himself, you know if there's any video component in the shoutcasting business, your appearance does factor in, and I think the nerdy-but-bear-like Day9 image really works for him. But yeah, it's pretty dumb how the moment people hear a girl's voice on stream PICS and HOW BIG become the dominant tone of the conversation.

Leah Jackson is officially a dumb b-tch.
She thinks the prize pools for the NASL and IGN are TOO BIG?!?
Apparently her brain started off small and never got any bigger.
I like how G4 started off small and is now nonexistent.

First, I'm sure the ban-hammer (or at least a warning) will be dropped on you however I think you're missing what she's saying here. She didn't say it's too big, she said that there should be slow and steady growth as opposed to a giant explosion which could lead to SC2 as an esport quickly fading away.

There have been many e-sports projects in the past that have gone all out when it comes to prize money, production etc, and they utterly failed in the end.
It is much better, and safer, to start out small instead and then grow from there. She is smart enough to understand that, especially considering she has no e-sports experience to draw from.
|
Of course guys! my bad! When the NASL and IGN fail miserably for starting out too big I will be all OMG we should have all listened to Leah Jackson because she knows all about running e-sports tournaments and how they should have started off smaller so as to attract less talented players especially ones from Korea or Europe.
/s I bet if she didn't have boobs you wouldn't even bother defending her.

Hmmmm State of the Game, State of the Lame, and now "Girls of Starcraft 2" (needs a rename desperately).
I gotta admit I was skeptical at first, and honestly though it was a trap, but it's not as bad as I though it would be (no offense intended by this statement). It might be a cool project, depending how often this will be done and the quality of topics and talk put in.

Listened to the whole thing. Very cool podcast. I liked the lightning round idea a lot but some of your questions were just plain weird. Like "Have you ever dated a black guy." Who cares?!? It is cool that not all the questions are Starcraft related but you seem to cross the line sometimes and get a little inappropriate.
Other than that I liked it and look forward to more. Maybe even some showmatches between your guests. ^_^

Actually it can be a turn off to many new viewers. I know a bunch of people who just can't get past watching like 5 mins of Day[9] because of initial impression. A nerd persona is pretty much a love it or hate it thing.

If they don't fail, it doesn't prove her wrong. If you have a huge prize-pool and you invest a ton into your opening, and it flops, it would not only hurt you, but it would also discourage everyone else from joining in. Start relatively small, and grow large to prove success and growth to sponsors. It's how things work.
|
Ok I finished the podcast. My thoughts:+ Show Spoiler +- It was more a girl interview than anything else.
- CVs and biographies felt boring after 2h.
- Maybe I'm expecting too much, but the topics felt a bit superficial and boring.
- Lightning rounds needs to be a real lightning round. No thinking, just pure 1st correlation.
- 1-by-1 interviews felt monotone, try to throw all 4 of them together into 1 vent chatroom and give them a topic?
- Felt sorry for Kelly.
- Forgot, but I had more. Will edit when I remember them.

Why has this got anything to do with eSports in the West? There's nothing stopping females participating in the community and how the fuck do you get 'casual misogyny' from my post. When we are talking about a videogame why are we even making the distinction? This immediately creates a separation of us and them, when we are all the fucking same in a videogame. I think it's tasteless to even have this podcast which feels the need to even point this out. Especially when it's called 'Starcrack' (sigh).
You know teamliquid was already featured on a feminist site for some completely retarded threads full of hate and stupidity right. A feature like this actually makes MORE of these idiots come out of the woodwork and talk shit.
Would you actually support me making a podcast (being a white male) where i find random black Starcraft players and get their views on things, and call anyone who thinks it's unnecessary a 'casual racist'? Cause there is no difference to this. Gender or race, we don't need to make a distinction or marginalize groups. How the fuck you could take my view as misogyny for wanting women to be treated the same in the community i don't have any clue.

It made perfect sense you just obviously didn't understand it. Why would we segregate bronze players? I DON'T KNOW PREHAPS BECAUSE... THIS IS ACTUALLY BASED ON SOMETHING IN THE GAME??
I'm not calling the podcast sexist i was responding to someone actually calling me sexist somehow. I'm saying, why should it even exist it we are all equal in the game. Why do women need 'exposure in the scene'. They can get noticed just the same as anyone else can (obviously even easier infact), really don't think they need a podcast with a stereotypical pink font for 'Girls in Starcraft' to make their opinions shared.
Half of the comments are now about their appearance; So is it doing what you are saying is intended here?

... happy to see theres some girls out there who don't base their online person soley on that fact. incontrol's gf seems like shes pretty above that, hats off to her.
the others were kinda meh. I don't understand, why do this feature? With regards we are all the same gender or race, why highlight this at all To me this is just as tasteless as 'Black guys of Starcraft 2, yes there is really black people who play Starcraft as well folks!'. Are you kidding me? Quit shitting on this podcast already, want to know why e-sports wont succeed in the west? It's cause of this shit right here, awkward nerds shitting on girls that want to participate in the community being driven away due to casual misogyny and shutting them out from the discussion just because of their gender. No one will ever take us seriously if we can't treat women as normal human beings. How the fuck you could take my view as misogyny for wanting women to be treated the same in the community i don't have any clue. holy crap that actually made no sense. this podcast was not made with ANY malice in mind, just getting some exposure to some women in the scene, why does it need to be picked apart like this??! based on your logic, why are we segregating bronze-masters? we're all in the same game. hell why bother comparing anything? seriously, just because they talk only with women doesn't mean they have a feminist agenda. just because you interview black players doesn't mean you're racist, people just need to stop looking for things to fucking complain and get offended about. They can get noticed just the same as anyone else can (obviously even easier infact), really don't think they need a podcast with a stereotypical pink font for 'Girls in Starcraft' to make their opinions shared. all 4 of these women are involved in the game and the scene in some way. what's your point then?
everyone needs exposure in the game, this podcast just happens to have focused on these 4 ladies. they have also had incontrol, wheat, and i'm sure many others, are you saying those shows are in fact insulting to you in some way??!
wow. some people are hard to please.
btw, if you're getting trolled by the typical morons with those appearance comments, i don't know what to say. idiots are everywhere. just because they're getting baited to post those stupid comments by this podcast doesn't mean the podcast itself is garbage or sexist. so you know what? instead of posting on why this podcast isn't needed because you perceive some inequality, how about a bit of thanks for these people who are taking time to post quality content?

Leah Jackson is pretty damn cute. She reminds me of Emmanuelle Chriqui of Entourage fame.

Thanks for interviews fill the down time of MLG stream. BTW is anyone think KellyKelly look like Kelly Wells? are they related? Yes, i do watch it and it's what it is.

the podcast was quite enjoyable.
Anna's interview was the most hilarious. ill never look at incontrol and napkins the same way anymore. pretty messed up to hear that kelly went through all the harassment people throw at her. its good to see that she is taking it very well and not letting assholes get to her.
when is the ETA of the next episode? itll be pretty interesting to hear some masters league female interviews. or diamond if u cant find any masters league :o
the lighting round does need to be faster though =P the last song made me wince >.o but overall, it was a good show

It's really interesting how most of the threads with content about women and starcraft end up in flamewars lol. Haters gonna hate

theres not really that many "known" female players out there. which is why they are requesting masters league females to PM them for the next show.
this first show was a good start to introduce the podcast and their plans.

They should get Navi and/or Eleine from GLHF (by and far the best female caster and imo would one of the top casters if she did it more often).

Anna "Uncontrollable" Prosser is serioulsy cool.

Wasn't there a Master Zerg Female player? I forget her name, but she was mentioned as missing and it turns out she was moving on with her life due to financial issues.

so now there are no master league female players???

They're women, not "girls".
We're not all in middle school here.

Incontrol is a lucky guy

If females were actually treated the same as males by the SC2 community then you might have a point but they're not.

Maybe women are NOT the same as men after all and dont like violent / competitive games as much as men do? After all the world is going to be pretty boring if we all like the same things ... it is actually good to have different opinions on certain things and it is pretty bad to train our women to "nurture their aggressive sides" to turn them into "men type #2".
If a woman is interested in eSport that is fine, but please stop whining about the lacking numbers of females in Starcraft 2. I dont think there are many boys playing pony farm games either ... just embrace the difference and accept it.

I would officially like to ask that any female SC2 player, Platinum league and above please PM me if you would like to be on our next "Girls of" episode. I want it to be more of a round-table discussion show rather than pure interviews like this one.
I've also reached out to Soe, Seltzer, and a few others about coming on. You'd be surprised how difficult it is to work around various schedules, especially when people are in other parts of the world.

get rid of kelly and it would be great

wow that chick Leah Jackson is beautiful!
A boon for Sc2 community :D
|
Nice, out of the 600,000+ that ladder in America, it brings me joy that there are at least 4 women out there that know what Starcraft 2 is.
|
Just out of curiosity, who are are the top chicks in terms of skill (or ladder rating)?
|
They should include Soertz if for no other reason than she seems to know more about Starcraft than the rest of them...
|
No CheekyDuck? Watched her in the morning a few times, she's adorable.

Nobody says they're exactly the same but why would video games be any different from sports like water polo or handball or any number of other things, outside of cultural barriers to participation? It's particularly ridiculous to suggest that women don't enjoy competition as much as men to an extent that would explain their limited participation in professional gaming.
That's not the main issue in any case - the biggest problem is that when they do participate, a large portion of the fan base is quite happy to be sexist as hell about it. Even in this thread about a podcast specifically designed to showcase what several women are bringing to the competitive SC2 scene it's full of posts from people who blatantly care about nothing but how attractive they are. You won't change this by ignoring the problem.

G5 returning to Starcraft?
WHY IS THIS NOT A BIG DEAL O___O ?
|
oh shit G5 returning to pro gaming......G5 will easily be best foreign toss with practice.
|
I enjoyed it. But it would be more fun if it could be with all the people chatting together ( like in SoTG ) instead of a couple of separate interviews. By the way: what is up with all the girls in SC2 being so pretty?
|
After being linked here from JWD's XVIII thread I have some thoughts. Apart from agreeing that it would be interesting to get some sort of discussion going on between the interviewees (granted there may be logistical issues) I'd like to say that the interviews were quite well done. The women all had fantastic insight, I particularly liked Leah's apprehension about the speed in which tournaments are growing. While I don't totally agree it was a great bit of insight from someone inside the gaming media scene. If I could have one issue it would have to be the questioning of Kelly, the rest of the cast were not subject to such invasive/inappropriate questions. Perhaps the Interviewer is on a more casual basis with Kelly and that was the basis for the questioning. However this was not in any way communicated through their interaction. One positive from the hounding was Moonglade's input into the conversation which was nice as he is a total baller ^^

Hey, i just heard the first 2 and a half interview and then my class started but i enjoyed it alot. Thanks. We really need to vote the shit out of Anna so she can win miss usa and give shoutout TL during her 'thank you speech'

Mmmm.... As non-threatening, non-hostile, and as respectful as I can say this, kind of upsetting seeing our name used without permission giving certain circumstances.
I guess nothing can be done about it now though.

So who's the best female SC2 player? Or the top 3...

my nerd heart is smashed to pieces by anna smile

Yeah, this was a total mess up on their end. How could they forget the world renowned Girls of Starcraft 2 Facebook group?
Get on the ball, OP.
