@habermas: We ran out of money to do philanthropy. The other choice was to shutdown the service. We currently have a decent paying customer base who are happy to support the site with the $5 price tag. If you have better suggestions on monetization, we are happy to hear them. | ||

Subscription model has been the most profitable of all the monetization strategies we've tried during the two years we've operated drop.sc. If my presumption about your knowledge was wrong -- I apologize and would definitely like to hear more of your advice. edit: if you really want to restrict people from searching the site (silly idea), at least charge only for using the filters, and leave the basic search available to all. | ||

Your POV has been argued multiple times before. actually, I did, I pay even for stuff I don't need cause I like to support people trying to build this esport thing, but you're just trying to sell yet another demo site with no real added value, hence blocking even the search function. oh yeah, and sorry for not reading the rest of the thread, i saw the announcement, liked the first impression, didn't like the 2nd impression (obviously), put my opinion here. if you can't take the criticism why do you even ask for opinions? | ||

And now you are making up pretty random accusations. Ask anyone who was around when drop.sc was published -- it was a breadth of fresh air. The fact that thousands of players continue to use the site daily tell that it clearly provides something people need. Also, I've open-sourced my efforts long time ago https://github.com/alexhanh/drop.sc, helping sites such as ggtracker to born. I will say this again: running websites costs money and SC2 community is hard to monetize on ads due to low rate of misclicks and low ad penetration due to high adblock usage. We need to cover expenses. Subscription model has worked great. It's simple as that. If it doesn't have any real value added, what are you even using the site for? Please do us all a favor and get the f out of this thread. You have nothing to give.
