EPISODE 1 RELEASED!
Many of you may know about the legend of miniWHEAT. You might have heard him cast, or perhaps you saw him review LEGO Batman on Epileptic Gaming. Either way, this little gamer, and my son, has taken an extreme interest lately in StarCraft 2.
After we did the fun little cast for the Newegg Winter WanFest 2010, I thought it would be cute to interview him about his first cast. Well that quickly turned into something completely different as miniWHEAT began asking about playing StarCraft 2.
What resulted is an experiment/show about teaching a 5 year-old how to play StarCraft 2.
Comments, Suggestions, & Fanmail can be sent to miniwheat@djwheat.tv
We're currently looking for map makers to help build "challenges" for miniWHEAT. If you're interested, please also contact us at the email above or send me a PM!
We encourage you to watch the previous episodes to see his progress throughout the series!

Deep in the mountains of the united states, the US are developing an ultimate counter to the ultimate korean weapon. We are developing miniwheat to defeat flash.
|
Very impressed that he could intuitively learn stuff like uprooting a spine crawler on his own accord. You've got a highly intelligent 5 year old on your hands wheat!
Miniwheat fighting!

sweet dude Go and get him to Masters League

The art was custom done by Molly Maloney (http://www.MollyMaloney.com) - she's mad pro and I love her style and she whipped up the banner in about 48 hours. Much <3 to her!

Awww so cute <3, you should maybe lower your mouse speed because he's having some trouble with it
|
<3 Trash talking the AI! Show him who is boss!
Miniwheet FIGHTING!

HOLY SHIT!!!!MINIWHEAT HWAITING!!!!!
|
This is absolutely epic. My girlfriend has a little more love for SC2 Wheat. Way to go bro that kid is gonna be a champ!!!
|
This is awesome. He learns really fast But I think your mouse is too sensitive for him.
BTW to Arcanne - he is 5 years old as stated in OP
|
Amazingly adoreable future GSL champion for sure.
|
lolol i loved teh snot part the most... That made me laugh so much when u were trying to tell him where the other guy's base is LOLOL. Kid's going to grow up to be an army general man!
|
Maybe you should turn down the screen scroll speed. He seems to be struggling with keeping the screen in the right place when he tries to look around
|
Thats the new jaedong in the making, I can see it already
|
This must be really difficult to learn to play that young let alone teach. Cool stuff djs
|
Tiger Woods started training to be a golf legend when he was like 2 or 3 years old. Why are you starting so late?!
|
Hey! Seat is too high, that's unfair ><
|
Hahaha, i love how he pressed GG at the end :D
As for the teaching, you are doing a good job, but focusing on some stuff too much. If he asks you what something does, don't say it's not important, explain why.
Keyboard shortcuts and macro are too hard for him at this time. Instead of A-moving, make him attack by right clicking into his opponent.
He should be silver level in a month.
Great show!
|
"Do you think that was hard first challenge ? It wa hard for the computer! " epic
|
|
dude how old is miniwheat he looks like 5 or something I remember my first games lol he's doing pretty good for such a complicated game
|
He did a split!? not even i can do that
|
Hahaha that is too awesome, miniWHEAT fighting!
Also, cool banner

"And banelings go BOOOOMMMM"<3 MiniWheat!!!! Thx for the videos bigWheat, I have to tell you man, that each day I find your productions to be even better, very cool ideas, and this one definetly will give us a lot of fun. When i have a kid, it will be a gamer like yours for sure (L). I almost forgot, our foreign hope for the GSL is not jinro or IdrA, just wait for miniWheat, korean's time is over.
|
he`s already mentally connected to the swarm ! right after he let the queen inject her larvae *pffssschhhiiiii* he had to sneeze <3.
gogo miniwheat !!!
djwheat you`re a great guy man, and so is your son .
|
LMAO the AI transfused the Hydra Den xD wtf!?!?!?!?
amazing video, Miniwheat played better than i thought he would
wish Overlords were 50 minerals
|
This looks like a great way for you and miniWheat to spend time together and I had a big smile on my face the entire episode.
I noticed that the concept of clicking quickly to select units is something he struggled a little with and I remember when I was a kid I used to have trouble clicking icons on the desktop because I found double clicking a bit difficult. My dad actually changed the settings so that you could click it slowly and it would still open the program.
A little tip I could offer is to maybe turn down the "scroll" sensativity as when he tried to move the camera around it shot away from his base and it sometimes was difficult to recentre cause it kept shooting to far. Just somthing I think might make it easier for his next challange.
miniWheat hwaiting!
|
Totally awesome!
Just one thing that hit me, perhaps it would be easier for him if you lowered the sensitivity a bit, he seemed to be struggling a bit with the scroll speed at least in his first game. Just a thought.
Good luck!
edit: doh, just beaten to it
|
wow its amazing how much he remembers, especially considering he can't do math or read yet. I am inspired to teach my 6 year old, he watches me play alot and I always tell him he can play "when he's older". After seeing this I think he might be able to handle atleast learning the basics, though I will be teaching him Terran as I want him to win ;p
|
Adorable, this lil'dude is the future!
|
Awesome.. Can't wait to refer back to these for tips when my boy is old enough to play! Looking forward to watching Mini-Wheat turn gosu!
|
|
This is classic. Thank you for the view into your family!
I look forward to more of this!

Hell yeah Miniwheat!
You're the best!
|
Really fun to watch! The only things I would suggest is turning down mouse sensitivity and/or screen scroll speed and also disable the mouse zoom for him. Good luck to miniWheat in his next challenge!
|
omg this is one of the best things I have ever seen lol
|
You're amazing Mr Wheat, keep up the good work.
|
That was awesome, miniWheat fighting! Not only winning but learning how to trash talk too. JD in the making. Oh, I think you can slow down double clicking in the settings or something, since he seemed to have a bit of trouble with it at first.
|
That was super entertaining, cant wait for next episode!
And my lord was the trashtalking great
|
he's a baller already =D keep it going miniWheat

"It was hard for the computer"
Made me laugh so hard.
|
Really good job mini! Just amazing how he already knows how to inject larva's and get zergling speed. Keep up the good work, can't wait till the next lesson.
|
ahhh yes your son is entering the wonderful world of online gaming ^^
I remember for me it was when I was 10 years old and we got the original diablo. Two brothers+56k modem=good times haha.
This reminds me a lot of my niece who is 7 years old and she already knows how to go online and play those barbie games and stuff like that. It amazes me how kids can catch on to this stuff at such a young age, back when we were six all we did was play with action figures and play outside and that was about it.
Soon miniwheat will start dominating like white-ra is now : ) good luck to him.
|
i want one of theseeeeeeeeeeeeee!
your son is a very funny little guy and it always makes me happy to see father&son having a good time!
Pretty funny and entertaining! thanks djwheat
|
I just watched Episode 1 and totally loved it! Keep roflstomping those AI's, you're gonna be big
GG !
|
|
great vid, its allways awesome to do something with the kids that you love yourself ;-)
My oldest girl (5) allso loved the vid and made me promise i would teach her aswel. But she wants to play protoss.... they look nicer and for some reason that is very important for girls ;-)
|
Adorable. Excited to see future videos. Also need to get myself a GG Button LOL.
|
lolol what a baller kid very cool :D
|
I've got a feeling that players up to Gold are going to leave Starcraft II forever after getting steamrolled by miniWheat online.
|
haha he pressed GG, awesome
this is pure comedy!
|
Haha the muta scared me a little but it really was a great game, miniWheats macro is much better than mine as zerg
|
Another reason why the SC2 community is the best in the world. In all other games (as in console FPS) we have teens who trash talk their way to victory and don't know shit about manners. But in SC2 we have MiniWheat who says GG at the end of the game. :D
Seriously though, these kind of awesome videos time and again make me think about just how close-knit and awesome the Starcraft II community is and how there is no other game or community that can match it.
We are looking at the Bobby Fischer/Viswanathan Anand of SC2 right there. At 5 to grasp, realize and understand those advanced techniques (Speed, Larva Inject, Control Groups etc.) is quite simply stunning. Keep em coming Wheat!
Oh and BTW, when you were near the ramp, I was desperately hoping that the AI would not go Muta (were you afraid of that at all) and Thank God that it was able to get only one out.
|
haha, this show is fucking awesome!
I love the stickers on the mouse, I should start pimping my mouse so I can be as cool as miniWHEAT!

|
This is awesome.. I taught my 5 year old daugher to play too.. so awesome coming back to her making 3 PFs by the choke and seeing the computer run into it over and over and over again
|
|
possibly the cutest thing ever
|
"Im gonna select my hatchery..." miniWHEAT gives djWHEAT angry look and says: "You mean my hatchery?" :D Love you two guys, epic duo!
|
Haha, so fun to watch the younger generations be so intuitive. Building units and making buildings seems easy, while the attacking is much harder. Using uproot was great.
|
As someone said, you should probably lower the scroll speed a bit. But much love to this, can't wait to see more!
|
This is too good. I was dying before the playing even started with the intro xD
This has quickly become can't miss "TV" !
Edit: just finished and it was amazing. "It was hard for the computer." miniWHEAT's a badass.
|
Nice, you lowered the scrolling speed for him
Challenge suggestion?
Well, i think easy strategies with few units involved will be fine? Shouldn't be too hard against the easy computer. 6pool spine crawler rushing (he's fond of those guys, eh? vs zerg i guess, unless he's going to learn about creep vomiting)
With no regard of winning: Move around overlords/zerglings to form simple pictures. square, table, heart, numbers, letters.
|
|
hahaha that was epic.. I loved it haha... btw i need a GG button djwheat hook me up haha!!

I loved the way Miniwheat instantly hit that button when he won
|
I think you let him hang out with Idra too much.
"That was hard... FOR THE COMPUTER!"
|
I got a new favorite SC2 gamer
|
I think the easiest area for him to improve would be selecting units. I think intuitively he wants to start his box from the middle of the units rather than start from the upper left of the units. Should be easy to fix if he gets some pointers.
|
Future liquidminiwheat? miniliquidwheat? miniwheatliquid?
They should have GSL Jr for kids under ten.
|
Really great stuff.
Some suggestions. As he will naturally struggle with keeping his minerals low & and constant transfuses, how about adding a second / third and even 4th hatchery?
I found the blizzard-challenge missions "relatively" hard (for a kid). Are there any simple custom maps that do not require buildings but help you click, move units, fight, etc? I am sure some community people would be happy to create easy-mini-wheat learns SC2 custom maps.
GG MiniWheat!

Yes this is actually one of the challenges we're working on for a future episode with a special map being built for exactly that. It should also be noted that as we do these episodes we discover more and more things to help him out with.
For example, we're going to do something specific with gas and minerals so he can grasp that concept better.
|
The left mouse button shall from now on and forever be known as blueclick on TL!
|
Thats so cute how he takes so long to react to some actions, but as soon as the computer types gg he WENT FOR THAT BUTTON hahaha

Great show, i expect miniwheat in the next MLG

miniWHEAT is my new hero LOL :-D Looking forward to the next episode.

I wish I had a 5 yr old kid so I could train him and we could form a team of kids playing sc2.
Such a good idea with the red and blue sticker!
|
Haha, this is so awesome!!
Learn him 4 gate and get him into diamond Joking ...
Very cool how he can keep up his concentration btw!
|
take that! take thaaaat!!! kids are ridiculous lol
|
I think my favorite part of episode 1 is when he first starts off by himself. There is just some feeling of victory when he finally boxes his drones and sends them to work.
Oh and the red and blue buttons are a great idea.

lol. double clicking the overlords to move them away. the zerglings pile on it "oh they're following them..". so random but i lol'd hard

Having him play zerg should be considered child abuse. He should obviously play protoss and 4-gate.
Love this show, it got so much potential!

Such a brilliant comment, and so true. Lol.
Wouldn't it be funny if he was actually a child prodigy and becomes the Flash of sc2
|
mor oh-vor lurds!!!!!!
Seriously, cutest thing starcraft related I've ever seen. Is he half Asian? My GF is Taiwanese. Totally getting her pregnant tonight and teaching my son how to play.
I hope it's not a girl. :|
|
Get him a smaller mouse! Zerg must be hard to learn first.
|
Love this show lol
Thanks for the entertainment + really cool to teach him to play
Also next MLG, EG or someone should get him a keyboard with all the pros signatures on it like Hyungjoon becomes a progamer had
|
awesome, I thought the best part was when he played without your coaching, he did better than I would expect. If he remembered to build workers he would have won against the very easy ai immediatly.
small tip If you don't want him to learn about air units yet (which I can imagine) just make sure the opponent is terran. very easy ai will not build banshees, I believe, and the other air units can be ignored.
|

wrong, very easy AI will build 1 banshee 1 viking and 1 CATTLEBRUISER. Basicly they build every unit ingame.
edit: And yes, miniWheat fu*king ownz!

wow that's so awesome.

Wut's minwals?
I can't stop smiling.
|
7 pool on steppes? Catz would approve I'm sure...
|
Haha that was great. I think he and stargirl should play a match together
|
I really, really enjoyed it. I'm totally impressed how well he handles the mouse. I'm curious, he didn't learn all the numbers and stuff in school already, did he? He doesn't know how many minerals he has if it say 1325? I guess the easiest thing would be to just explain what he has to do if he hears the "We require more minerals." voice, same goes for supply and gas.
Anyway, really cool stuff. Keep it up, both of you.
|
Awesome. Picking it up fast. Blue click, Red click!
|
Dude, he is going to be so pro, look at that, sneeze all over and STILL GAMING. That is dedication. I think maybe a map where he can see where his opponent is would help him on his navigation skills when you're telling him to attack.
That GG button is so awesome.
|
Good idea with map hacks!

I love how he bitches about Overlords. Join the club little man, join the club.
Maybe you should turn down the sensitivity on the mouse for him since most children, at a young age, don't have a steady or stable control

We're working on getting him his own "setup" to play. A mouse easily gripped, a better chair, etc. but we don't have a ton of money so it's going to be awhile before we can actually do that! It's in our plans tho!!!
|
This is too awesome! Looking forward to more episodes.
I remember teaching my little brother Brood War, he couldn't read yet so he just memorized every button.
|
well yeah, turning down the sensitivity might be a great help. Overall it was pretty awesome even though i couldn't hear everything since my girlfriend was always doing the "oh , wie süüüüüüüüüüß" (English: oh, how cuuuuttee and other similar stuff) sound right next to me. I'm already cheering for his first 6 pool ladder victory!
|
Hehe, I really found this etertaining to watch, I actually have let my 7 and 5 years old sons try Sc2 (actually they have been playing broodwar for a while now), and maybe I will find som good tips from these videos how to teach them Sc2. =)
It seems like they understand some thing instantly while other thing you need to tell them every game =) I will watch future videos and if there will be any custom made maps for kids training I hope they will be made public some way so that maybe I can use them to. Good luck in your training!

That would help him a ton. His neck might hurt after a while, because your monitor is very high and he is forced to look up. Maybe that is why he is playing on his knees from some point (along with the monitor viewing angles).
Great job though, I think your son is really enjoying it and this is what matters the most. You must be a very proud father :-)
|
That was cute
I was so shocked that miniwheat was able to press backspace to go back to his base! I'd never expected that LOL
|
NO OVERLORDS AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!
I NEED MORE OVERLORDS!
This is awesome
|
I'm finding it almost impossible not to hit "Buy Now" for that GG button ($7? I'll probably cave by the end of the day). Seeing miniWHEAT instantly go for it was hilarious!
|
Surprised I actually sat and watched all 3 vids in their entirety. Will be interesting to see what concepts he'll actually grasp and what concepts will just have to be used to responding specifically without knowing how/why. I imagine the sound cue of "spawn more overlords" will actually be really important.
|
oh man, if i ever have a son i want him to be just like miniwheat :D
|
This was great, had me smiling throughout.
|
"He's going to hive dude." Hilarous. Can't wait to see the next episode

Haha! "The only problem with that, that I see, is that it took 3 minutes and 22 seconds before you moved your drones." Good tip!
Dude, miniwheat is such a n00b. I could totally pwn him.
|
this is awesome he'll pick up in no time just get him to watch how u play and then he'll get good.
I remember i started gaming when i was 5 my bro taught me how to play War3 i actually wasn't that bad for a kindergardener coming home and playing 4v4 War3 by himself

yeaaaaaaaaaaaaah riiiiighhttttt <3

Teach him to 6 pool
Good stuff, wish my brother cared about video games

That sneeze and humongous booger were priceless. Thanks djWHEAT and miniWHEAT! You guys are awesome, keep doing this. miniWHEAT = next baby of SC2.
Edit: Also, I was cracking up pretty good when you told him that he stopped making overlords just like daddy does. rofl

Everyone does that when they hear "You need more overlords" "I need more overlords!!! AHHHHHHHHH"
|
Lol that is so adorable. Mini wheat Fighting! "NOW I CAN MAKE ZERGLINGS!"
|
This is goddamn epic. Played the original command and conquer when I was 5. Wish my dad taught me like you are teaching him. Keep it up and remember to stay patient, and just add bit by bit, and quiz him occasionally too. Make sure he retains the info and you will be commentating your 5 year old sons games in no time!
|
Oh man, if that little guy keeps learning at the pace he's going then he's gonna be pwning me on the ladder in no time.

This reminds me of another similar thread for another game: "What My Six Year Old Has Learned From CoX"
CoX meaning City of Heroes/Villain a superhero MMORPG.
Might be interesting for you to read a similar experience a dad had with his daughter and gaming, she is nine years old now and he has posted updates every few months on her progress and thoughts since she was six (she started playing at 4 1/2). Will quote first post and link the rest if anyone is interested in reading. Pretty long read but he is a great writer and an awesome read.
As I sit here to wait for the servers to come back up, it struck me that I could write a little post about Sister Flame.
Sister Flame is the online handle of my middle daughter, currently six years old. She's been playing City of Heroes since she was 4 and 1/2. It was only over the last year we began to team together with my two accounts and have a lot of fun. I thought I let you know what Sister Flame has learned from CoX.
(1) Flame Learned To Read
At the tender age of five, I let Flame play on my second account on my laptop beside me. For a while, I had to tell her what the train destiantions were, what the NPCs were saying and what the villains name were.
It was only mere months before Flame didn't need my help anymore. We were playing one summer evening and I noticed that she wasn't asking me to read things. I looked over at her screen and watched her for a bit. I was intrigued she knew where to go.
"Need any help reading, honey?" I asked.
"Nope. I can read nope. That says Atlas Park and that says Steel Canyon. Those are Clockworks, but I like calling them Clickey Clacks." she replied quite happilly.
Her teacher was quite surprised at the headstart she had on her reading skills. When I informed the teacher that Flame's headstart was the result of playing a superhero online game, I got the weirdest look. Oh well.
Now, at six, I can hear Flame reading slowly over the mission text and the NPC dialogue. She cannot type yet, but if we get on a team together, I usually do the talking for both of us.
(2) Attitude Matters; Not Age.
From time to time, I get a little impatient with my daughters. I do recall the one evening I was unwell, but Flame wanted to play CoH and wanted to get on a big team.
"I'm too sick to play, so you'll have to do it by yourself." I told her, thinking that she'd never figure it out or get booted quickly if she did get invited to a team.
I laid down on the bed and closed my eyes to rest. Twenty minutes later, I stretched and asked Flame how she was doing.
"Good. I am in a big team." she told me.
"Oh yeah?" I asked.
"Yep. People keep joinging, but I think they're playing soccer." she says.
"Why is that?"
"I keep seeing the word 'kick'."
I rolled off the bed and scrolled back through the chat. Apart from several comments about Flame's excellent control and attack with her Fire Blaster, I see several conversations/arguments with some idiots who joined the team and did something really stupid. Most of them wound up being kicked by the leader. I also notice that every so often, Flame has written 'ty'.
"What's the 'ty' for?" I asked.
"Thank you. You type it sometimes. Everytime I see 'Flame', I type it. They like it."
I watched Flame play for another twenty minutes. No one in the group had a clue to her age and she played her role as any good team member should: waiting for 'Go' or 'Ready' before attacking, saving her Rain of Fire for large groups and giving inspirations to thoes that needed it.
Finally, I had to type a message for Flame.
"Thank you all for the team. This is Flame's dad. She has to get up for Grade 1 tomorrow and needs to go to bed. She says you were all great."
I still love typing that message and watching the responses. Most are 'lol' or 'what?!'. One time, a player typed 'Wow. I wonder if my poodle could play.'. All in good fun.
(3) Playing Coh Is Just Like Playing House a.k.a Imagination Is Power.
Flame has always had a decent imagination, but it has improved a lot since she has been playing Coh. She likes to spin stories about her toons and give them a backstory. This has translated well to her schoolwork when she has been asked to do creative writing assignments. She has also developed a healthy curiousity into some of the groups in CoH. Some of the things she has asked me are:
"Why do Skulls hang out in Perez Park?"
"How come the Clockworks don't attack cars or make nasty cars to attack people?"
"Why are Trolls green?"
"Where do the Outcasts get their power?"
Now, she makes up toons with funny names (to us anyways), but good backgrounds. Among some of her mains are Takes Care Of Pets (A MM with two mercenaries: Cat, Dog), Takes Care Of Bats (A PB with Bat Wings) and of course, Sister Flame (a Fire Blaster with her partner, Brother Frost [me]).
So, if you ever run across a Fire Blaster named Sister Flame on Freedom, chances are its my daughter havign fun, but learning many things at the same time. Feel free to team with her, but don't be a "poopyhead" (her words, not mind).
Ciao!
P.S. She is working on her typing skills, so if you see her say "Go", "Go", "Go" about twenty times, don't worry. It's only 1 of about 100 words she can spell.

DND_enkil very cool story!

This is awesome! He's a fast learner, and once again, I'm really impressed by his ability to stay conecentrated on the game for such a long time. Loved it when he raged about the overlords and bmed the comp LOL.

So I have been thinking a little bit about custom maps. Maybe it would be nice with a couple a of maps that focuses on a small part of what u usually do under a normal game. Maybe like one map that focuses on the opening with sending first drones to minerals, making the first additional workers and maybe up to getting an overlord or up to spawningpool or something like that, and when the goal i met, either that the maps autostart o could be restarted with a click so that you dont need th recreate a new game every time. Maybe it could be a timer included with a couple of goaltimes like you have goals in the challenge missions. I guess there gould be serveral diffrent maps that focuses on diffrent things with a little bit more advanced goals for every map.
I have also been thinking about some kind of map/maps to train unitcounters, also a little bit like in the challngemissions but simpler. One way to do i might be to show the unit that they should defeat and then they have to pick the unit/untis to counter it with. An a little bit more advanced way might be maps where they are shown a group of units that will attack their base in xxx:min-sec and they have to tech to a counter for it, for example map one they will be fine if they go zerglings, later maps they will need to build some kind of anti air.
I hope some of it made sense, I feel that my ability to explan things in english insnt that good at the moment

Maybe you should turn down the sensitivity on the mouse for him since most children, at a young age, don't have a steady or stable control We're working on getting him his own "setup" to play. A mouse easily gripped, a better chair, etc. but we don't have a ton of money so it's going to be awhile before we can actually do that! It's in our plans tho!!!

Seriously though, this show is so entertaining. When he tries to send the workers to mine it's the most intense thing ever. Of the many memorable parts the ones that stand out are when he put the gg button on the keyboard ROFL before the game started, and when he sneezed on his shirt. He is going to be gosu.

this is a great idea. may be the missions will start with training him to get up good economy (getting xx amount of mineral in xx:xx time, so he needs to get a good drones count or early expo, etc) and then come the micro aspect (i remembered playing some micro training map where you are given a group of units then micro them to win a battle), after that is unit counter, etc. Come the map-makers :D
anw, miniwheat is so cute. ^_^

One per week might be pushing it a bit... this show takes about as much production as all of my other shows combined. Might seem crazy, but that's just how post-produced content works. That's also a big reason as to why I love LIVE so much Do it once... done.
The other thing too is that I have to coordinate my schedule and miniWHEAT's schedule. You'd think that would be easy, but many nights have already have casts going on and it cuts into our "filming" time. Needless to say, he's doing some practicing on the side
So honestly, I don't think there even is a set schedule for this quite yet. As I do more and more episodes it becomes easier to do (in fact, this episode took a very long time simply because of the new graphics, picture in picture, etc - but now I have a "template" of sorts to work from).
The other thing which may delay releases of episodes is the fact that we're having some custom maps made for future challenges and those don't necessarily complete overnight AND require some testing (as you'll see in a future episode!)
I will however update you with progress in this thread (or via twitter @djWHEAT). And can tell you we've already begun filming Episode 2. And depending on how things go this weekend... it might actually hit next week.

I seriously love this show. This is the best show in the world period.
djWheat you really are a freaking genius. I watched episode 0, and i was just amazed at how miniWheat picked up things really fast or yelling at my tv to help him do the right thing. It's like a starcraft thriller where you don't know if the guy playing will be able to play or not. Emotion, laugh, nerd chills everything is in it.
And trying to borrow some of baller graph skill, I made a previsional graph of miniWheat awesomeness for the next episodes.

Good luck to you and to your miniyou.
PS: maybe it's my second of third posts, and i lurked this site for like 2 or 3 years, that's how awesome you are. Yeah, that's a lot of awesome.

Thank you for the kind words. To be honest, this show would have never came to light if I hadn't been a fan of the following two StarCraft related shows:
Hyung Joon Becomes a Pro-Gamer http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=110964
&
Nal-Ra's Old Boy http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=116942
These two shows (which I loved to death for the reasons you list) were my inspiration for putting together the series. If you enjoyed the miniWHEAT series, you may REALLY enjoy those as well.
PS Love the graph :D

Also I'm not so sure that the other races are that much easier to learn. Zerg has the advantage that there is only really 1 building you need to go to to create units. Hit select larvae and you get your entire list of units to make, no need to click around to all the various buildings to try and find the particular unit you want to build.
Zerg might be more difficult to grasp for someone that already has some RTS experience because they are different, but I think for someone with no experience at all they are a decent choice. The other hard thing about Zerg is larvae management which I don't think will be a concern for a long time to come. It will be awhile before mini starts learning specific strategies where a thing like larvae management matters.

It's so nice to see someone else "get it". Everyone keeps saying Terran Terran Terran. But I had the exact same thoughts as GogoKodo, in that... WTF happens when he has 5 Rax?! At least with a single hatchery you can do exactly as you mention and build everything you need from one building.
Additionally, you never want to "force" anything on a child. Like you mentioned, miniWHEAT picked Zerg, and I asked him to play something else and he refused. I didn't want him to instantly lose interest because we weren't letting him do what he wanted to do.
Besides, learning T and P can be future episodes ^_^

Just have to make sure my fiancee does not see this, or she'll be all up in my face about how we should have a kid (which actually potentially could be fun).
@djWHEAT - your patience is awesome, I hope I can be that composed of a father some day.

I was thinking of not playing zerg anymore but miniWheat inspires me to keep at it!!!

The speed at which he learned was definitely impressive, but I can't say I'm surprised, children of that age learn basically anything in record time, it just takes a patient and knowledgeable instructor who most importantly knows the way to teach a child. Keep up the good work both DJ and Mini wheat.

The most awesomely adorable thing I've ever seen. Its amazing that a 5 year old could have that kind of game comprehension or patience. When you were watching his replay and directing him, instead of getting frustrated or upset he listened and immediately wanted to apply it.

But that's mainly due to the fact that adults can read, and words like "overlord" aren't completely ambiguous to us (we know why they're called what they're called, so it's easy for us to remember which one is which), and we have the confidence to make actions with speed.
What I find impressive is his motivation and drive to stick to the goal and complete the tasks at hand. He doesn't get discouraged by failure, basically, and that'll be huge in learning this.

That was the part I liked the best actually. At the start of episode 1 while enjoying his mac n' cheese, he says, "I will keep trying, trying, trying and I wont give up." That is like the 100% perfect attitude to try to learn anything and it blew me away that that was his response.

I'm in love with this series!
It was the cutest thing ever when djwheat said "he GG'd James!" and miniwheat instantly hits the GG button. It put the biggest smile on my face !
miniwheat to masters league let's do it !

Awesome watch, reminds me when I was in first grade and used to watch my dad play warcraft 1&2, and then going to school and writing about it in my daily journals :D
|
I love seeing the results of the first massive generation of hardcore gamers reaching their 20's and 30's.
Idea: pick up smaller peripherals for him to use, like inexpensive spacesaver keyboard and travel mouse. In the video, the steelseries gear looked so unwieldy to his little hands
|
He hit that gg button so fast lol.
|
He is quickly learning.. though he sometimes has trouble recognizing different things (minerals, overlords). Maybe printing out small pictures of the icons and creating a memory game could increase his learning speed.
Too bad that when I was his age a C64 was the top of the line.
|
LOL I just watched the first video. That's so cute. I'm sure he'll be ready for GSL once he completes the campaign. =)

He put everything on hold for now to deal with RL, I am assuming this is as well.
|
I believe he tweeted a few day's ago that he's working on it.
|
i love the fact that he is learning fundamentals in such a way that he is gonna show up at age 11 with 400 apm and roll everyone in sight
|
This is cool stuff. Reminds me of when I first saw SC at age 10.
Go miniwheat!

WHEAT tweeted a little while ago about TheMiniOne (I just thought of that and think it is the coolest name ever) having sat through 6 or 7 games in a row. I can't imagine the level of sheer gosu that kid is going to develop.
|
I've figured it out.
+ Show Spoiler +IdrA is moving back to the US to coach miniWheat srry to spoil the surprise guys, but I worked it out.
btw; I think every gamer can symphatise with this:
"More Overlords?! AHHHHHH!"
question: How well does he read? or does he know say 'Zergling' through images?

Sometime soon, nerds will be getting roflstomped stomped by a 5 year old. Pity them.

Can't wait for the next episode (I hope there is one), I am just imagining him moving to korea at the age of 9 to improve skills in the ogs house xD

hahaha better turn on the language filter... prepare to feel some nerd rage

oh my goodness this is cute. I like how he got the perfect 3:3 split, and it only took him 3:20 game time :D
|
DjWheat, when will we see episode 2? =)
|
|
You know that in Korea alot of kids start playing this game at the age of 3-5 not as special as everybody is saying Its not like you get a bonjwa title for free by starting the game earlier than other people

gtfo dude.
|
I didnt know you were teaching him straight up how to play the game, that is so gosu.
I am looking forward to more episodes, tis just made my day so far
Oh and get him onto a TSL cast
PS: I would call that appropriate use of strong language by Blitchiz. Some people just need to spread bad mood all around.

This kid is already better than me. And better mannered in game imo.
|
Hes a pretty mediocre player, i'd probably beat him in 7 out of 10 games.
Nvm, wheat, pls more episodes !! Did u ever think about lowering mouse sensitivity and more importantly the scroll speed ? Seems like hes having problems with that.
|
That was awesome, I'll defibitly watch all the episodes as they come
in 20 years, when MiniWheat will be the uncontested bonjwa of starcraft 3, we'll have a good laugh watching this episode
The kid should have a smaller mouse and a screen not to high in front of him for some perfect parctice conditions
|
haahah the GG Button!! I watched Ep 1 and it was really cool ;]
|
We want more episodes please <3
|
Great job miniWHEAT! I'm really looking forward for this guy. I bet he's gonna stomp some Easy AI in no time. I cant wait his ladder debut ^_^'
Keep it up, buddy!
|
"Minerals?" "More overlords!? Auuuugh!" :D
Also, you might want to turn down the sensitivity for him. He seems to have trouble stopping the camera over where he wants it. Just a thought.
|
|
hahahah that was aweeesoommmeee!!!! He is such a cute kid!!
Best of luck MiniWHEAT! :D
|
God I laughed so hard at: Just like daddy you always need overlords :b God this kid is so cute, I am so jealous of you Wheat. But this is awesome! Can't wait for more videos =)
|
"did you think it was a hard challenge?" "yeah. it was hard for the computer."
what a true baller. i grinned so hard.
|
Awesome project, need moar :D
|
I though tit would be hilarious if you managed to get him features on the teamliquid team. LiquidMiniWheat. He can be the poster guy who's on the team but just doesn't get sent to lan
|
his even doing a worker split!!
|
miniWHEAT needs a mouse he can handle... a little laptop usb mouse would be fine for his hands!^^
that gg gutton is crazy!! :D
|
that was pretty sick.
I wonder if there's a djGun teaching minigun how to play, I think miniwheat's apm is slowly caching up to minigun's already. Someone sign this kid!
|
What has happened to the project? I've been checking this quite regularly but unfortunately still no episode 2!
I hope the project didn't get abandoned! Definitely looking forward to MOAR =D
|
|
This is absolutely adorable. Especially the GG button.
|
I can imagine him with the GG button at GSL in 5 or so years time. :')
Can't wait for future episodes as he's already showing huge promise. I'm 18 and I didn't win my first 2 or 3 VERY EASY games and he did at 5. O_O

On a serious note, I can see this kid becoming an esports king if he sticks to it.
|
My girlfriend made miniWheat some cookies but they melted in her bag so I don't imagine they made it home from PAXeast... :-/ I did give Marcus a pin from some booth that I hope he gets!
When I talked to DJWheat at PAX he said there were many hours of footage to edit together!
Gogogo!

Awesome! Great work look forward to seeing more episodes in the future.

That's amazing, it's truly awesome watching your son learn and think on his own.
His own little private session was awesome; a perfect showcase of problem solving!

He put me to shame when i started playing Think it would be hilarious if Miniwheat only wanted to play Terran would you disown him Wheat?

djWHEAT, miniWHEAT is adorable, man. I don't even like kids and I think he's a baller. But why would you make him play Z on Steppes?

Are you planning to start putting out these when all the rest of of your shows start up?

Oh man he had a killer 3-3 split!
On a further note, i think Wheat should do the same exact thing but use his mom. See how that goes.

That made me laugh for like 5 minutes. Keep up the epic, WHEAT.

This is adorable. Kid by DJwheat and Jade519! The enthusiasm and charisma are off the charts! Thanks for making this.

I thought djWHEAT was teaching mini to click first! Why didn't he tell him to right-click the control groups boxes! all the horrible missclicks on those boxes... the horror of right clicking those boxes when sending lings somewhere and then realizing i hotkeyed my lings to where i normally have my hatches. Good thing you can turn that off now.

This is so awesome, it reminds me so much of what it was like when I started playing RTS games. Each move is such a slow and deliberate process.

I can't believe I hadn't seen this yet, miniWheat is so cute! Loved the sneeze part Kids are awesome, I definately want one or two of my own in a couple of years.

Fairly sure we're watching the next Jaedong.

Hadn't seen any of these before but they brought a smile to my face. So funny and very impressive. I can hardly believe the amount of information he retained from such a short lesson!
I was a little surprised you didn't start him off on the Blizzard tutorials. They're not that bad are they?

Wheat: As the parent of a two and a half year old, I just wanted to let you know how much this warmed my heart, and I can't wait until my son is a bit older to start bonding over gaming. Keep up the great work!

i really hope to see another episode sooo adorable! i think it is fascinating to see such a little guy interact with an interface and such really good teaching job by wheat

Comming from a family where they forced me to do things (play piano, choir singing), I have to say good on ya, but don't force it. Encourage his interest. I always hated piano for like forever and was forced to practice... just hated it and never looked into it. If only my parents just encouraged it instead...
|
I just love this thing! This is so awesome. ^^

I hate to bump this at all, but since it already was today, I figure I'd give you guys an update.
miniWHEAT has been keeping up with his gaming on StarCraft 2. We actually have quite a bit of footage shot, I've just not had a whole lot of time to hit the editing room. With the launch of OneMoreGame.tv my time is pretty much sucked up by that and the nighly programming. However, I do have every intention of keeping this going, even if it's just to update everyone on his progress.
miniWHEAT plays alot of games, and one thing I've been very careful about is to not (as ilmman said) force him into playing. I like it when he comes up behind me while I'm casting and takes interest, rather than forcing him to get on and play. He's surrounded by StarCraft in many ways and it's been interesting to see his growth.
The biggest thing I've taken away from this series, is definitely bonding with the mini. This kid has gone from playing LEGO, Nick, and random Mario games to now approaching me with a controller and Portal 2 asking to play co-op. And he's 5. I can't even imagine what this kid is going to be like when he's 12-13 and he can REALLY start applying some skill. Gonna be fun on release days when we get to fight over games to play.
Thanks for supporting the little dude and I really hope to bring more episodes soon. Either that or one of these MLG's I'll just do a raw footage screening ^_^
miniWHEAT isn't coming to MLG Columbus. But he will be at MLG Anaheim!
|
djWheat.
I'm really enjoying this series, it's both entertaining and interesting (I'm studying to become a teacher, so it's cool for me on two levels: Starcraft 2 and the process of learning).
There's just one problem. The bonding between you and your son is so beautiful and your son is so cute that my partner has threatened to stop taking the pill in order to procure her own mini.
Please cancel the series - for my sake. Help your fellow man out.
|
Keep up the great work Big and Mini Wheat!

From what I heard DJWheat has tons of footage laying around, but he doesn't have the time to edit it all together. If I remember correctly he won't have the time anytime soon either. I hope I'm wrong though :D
|
I see it all now. DJ Wheat is trying to secure his retirement by creating the next Flash. If Flash was seven when BW came out and MiniWheat starts playing SC2 at age 5 then we will be able to create some kind of SC2 super-apm-god-hybrid-bonjwa-thing which dominates GSL every season.

Stop bumping this.. You keep getting me excited

he is on the DL, dealing with a foot injury

Its been so long since the last episode, who knows how much progress has been made. - can he send his drones to work on the first try? - can he find the enemy base? - is he taking expansions? - has he mastered the 7 roach rush? - how's his creep spread?
so many questions left unanswered...

djWHEAT said that he wanted to give miniWHEAT a bit more time, but that the series didn't end yet at all. He just thinks that mini is a bit too young for SC2. djWHEAT said also that they wanted to do this with the start of HOTS again. (For reference: I think djWHEAT said that on Real Talk, or on one of his recent livestreams, don't know for sure tough)
